  1. Exactly... Sounds like they're just jealous because they don't have a hobby.

No, they are genuinely worried about the effects on their home equity as a result of this.

    Opinion.

That may be true, but the fact is that something like this has a negative effect on real estate prices for the surrounding lots, and maybe even the majority of the neighborhood. "Classy," or at the very least, "not tacky" yard features would not do this.

  2. Ground beef should be cooked well-done, i.e. no pink otherwise you are courting food-borne illness. Not worth it over a burger.

For non-ground meat, I go rare. It's warm, all the surface bacteria have been killed, and with a little au jus, it's the perfect taste.

  3. You know what? I really need to get back into writing stuff like this again. If I can yank 4 pages worth of responses -- both positive and negative -- out of people, then I think I'm doing my job here.

And I'm going to bash the L-Bodies, like I intended to.

DO ITTTTT!! Just seeing *ahem* certain members get their fangirl panties all in a knot makes it worth it.

  4. It also reminds me of a house I drove by on Latigo Canyon Road in Malibu, CA:

It was a pretty surprising sight to see after 15 miles of twisty road. The surrounding scenery was incredible, too... something about those hills seemed magical and Lord of the Rings-ish.

Drive around Palos Verdes--even more so. Early morning when the sun is rising, or later evening, as the sun is setting and the marine layer is coming in are the most magical times.

  5. Not really from media, mostly from friends, and sometimes coming up with something that sounds interesting myself. Some of the slang that started out here has definitely spread a ways...kinda cool.

  6. And the best part for me: how do you carry a change of clothes in those? Gym shoes? There are many advantages to having a big, amorphous zippered pouch.

This thing is just a laaaaaaaaame double messenger bag.

  7. I went to Indianapolis once. Ate at a steak place (Sizzler I believe) and spent the next two days vomiting. Still better than a weekend in Cincinnati.

I don't know if Sizzler is even still around. Indy does have a good steak place, called Peterson's, up in the Castleton area off 82nd St. and I-69.

  8. STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - The Swedish government has received information on a possible pullout of investors backing a deal by luxury car maker Koenigsegg to buy Saab Automobile, and is making further checks, a government official said on Friday.

"We have received some information, yes, saying that," said Joran Hagglund, state secretary for Sweden's industry ministry. "We haven't managed to confirm it ourselves with Koenigsegg. We are keen to get this confirmed and are chasing them."

The question arose after a report on Friday in a regional Swedish daily, Goteborgs-Posten, that said the Saab deal was at risk due to investors possibly pulling out.

Hagglund declined to say where the government's information came from or whether it concerned one or more investors. "But there is nothing, as far as we have understood, that would prevent or complicate a deal between Koenigsegg and GM."

Swedish niche sportscar maker Koenigsegg struck an accord in June to buy Saab from General Motors GM.UL, backed by U.S. and Norwegian investors. [iD:nLG827751] The deal is set to close by the end of the third quarter.

Koenigsegg spokeswoman Halldora von Koenigsegg declined to comment on questions regarding investors possibly pulling out.

"Ownership questions are detailed information that I don't have the possibility to comment on today," she said. "What I can say is that our negotiations with GM are proceeding according to plan."

Norwegian entrepreneur Bard Eker, who owns part of Koenigsegg through his holding company Eker Group AS, was not immediately available for comment.

Saab is currently under creditor protection.

The Swedish state is negotiating with Koenigsegg about whether to guarantee a possible European Investment Bank loan that would form part of the financing for the acquisition.

Hagglund said the government remained in the dark on how much Koenigsegg and its financial backers would invest in Saab, and he expected an update "shortly" on Koenigsegg's business plan.

He said the EIB was likely to decide on a possible loan to Saab by end-September.

  9. CALIFORNIA

6 Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia -- 6 Flags is 6 Flags...this one isn't anything special IMO

    Alcatraz

    Barstow

Bishop ... Lone Pine ... Mono Lake (Owens Valley)

    Coastline

    Death Valley

    Disneyland -- DisneyWorld is better.

Palos Verdes should make the cut--simply some of the most beautiful landscape in the region, even though it's mostly just suburban, residential homes. Portuguese Bend, part of the PV peninsula, is the fastest moving land in the world, a continuous slumping landslide since 1956. That portion of PV Dr. S. is undergoing near-constant roadwork.

Hollywood Riviera is another good area--subdistrict of Redondo Beach, the signs call it "Riviera Village," but it's where the Hollywood elite used to have a lot of beach houses, like back in the 1920s through the 1940s.

Can't forget LA's Chinatown--so famous, and the first master-planned "Chinatown" in the world. The district was originally designed by a Hollywood set designer in the late 1930s, and it shows. Too cool at night.

The Valley...San Fernando Valley. Yes, it's suburbia, but you have to see Roscoe and Ventura Blvds. for yourself. Mulholland Drive snakes through the Santa Monica Mountains bordering The Valley.

Griffith Observatory needs to be on the list.

Huntington Beach, CA--aka Surf City USA.

And Beverly Hills is the ultimate tourist destination, though I personally don't think it's all that special.

    INDIANA

    Dunes

    Indianapolis

    Indianapolis Indians

    Indianapolis Motor Speedway

    Lucas Oil Stadium

    Manchester College

    O'Reilly Raceway Park

I have to ask...what about Indianapolis is really worth seeing? There's maybe enough to do to occupy a weekend, but that's about it.

  10. The pettiness of the herd strikes again.

Can't agree. When people put a lot of money and time into their homes, they have a strong financial investment in them. If someone else starts interfering with that equity in a negative way, and there is a law on the books, they have every right to protect their long-term investment.

Frankly, that's pretty tacky for a front yard/side yard display, because of the signs.

  11. This could potentially be a liability dissaster. Especially if they allow more than one person on the track at a time.

There are places for stuff like this. bondurant, skip barber, etc.

Liability waivers? As you said, there are places that do this...GM should get in on that business.
