  1. Time flies, doesn't it?

Hard to believe, but my NEPHEW'S FIRST BIRTHDAY is less than a month away, mid NOVEMBER! Watching him grow is awesome; I try to spend as much time with him as possible.

It's also hard to believe I haven't been online for nearly 2 months, since before I left for my Route 66 road trip. A few days after I got home, I developed a virus infection (stomach flu) which requires fluids and rest, so unlike me, I've been in bed early every night since arriving home.

A lot is going on right now, too, and wanting to be "on the road" and the fall/winter seasons don't help much. Among other things, driving my older 4 Monte Carlos (1972, 1976, 1979, 1981) before the snow flies as much as possible when the weekend weather cooperates ... moving stuff out of my rooms ... deciding on a car for the winter (current choices = 2-tone maroon 1989 Caprice, white/tan 1994 Cadillac Eldorado, gold 1996 Ford Thunderbird, maroon/tan 2006 Lumina LTZ coupe) to keep my 1987 MC LS out of the winter weather this year.

But, I will visit and post when I can. I know I have a few Emails and notes on Facebook to answer ... as well as sharing about my Route 66 road trip, posting a newer version of the "Home State Sights To See" list, etc.

    * ROUTE 66 *

As I finalized plans for this trip, I became a bit more apprehensive ... what if I missed the big things? What if I missed people along the way? I needn't have worried. The Route 66 trip I took September 5-16, 2009, was sssooo much more than I ever imagined ... and better than I anticipated. The places ... and more importantly, the people ... along the way are awesome! Route 66 is definitively alive and well (as is the Lincoln Highway).

I took HUNDREDS of pictures, which I WILL share once I take/have time to go through them and find a place to post them....

I started Route 66 in Pontiac IL and ended in Rialto CA (last night on Route 66 I stayed at the WigWam motel) ... and stopped at MANY places along the way in Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. I started and ended the trip with Lincoln Highway places (Franklin Grove IL and Kearney NE).

  3. How long did it take to type that list out?

    LOL!

A few days, at least an hour or so a day ... he he. But, I LOVED doing it. It was really cool to go through all of the replies and see what others had mentioned.

AND ... it seems like I have a few more to add, eh? :) VERY COOL.... Since I'm trying to get ready for the Route 66 trip, I doubt I'll have time to put the revised list together before then ... but later this year, I will put out a new list ;).

  4. **** BACKGROUND / ROAD TRIPS ****

Since 2003, I've done at least one road trip per year to see/meet family/friends....

    October 2004, west:

    http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/0410/0410.html

    August 2005, east:

    August 2008, east:

    http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/200808/2008rt.html

    SEPTEMBER 2009, SOUTHWEST:

This year's trip follows the "Mother Road"...Route 66! Consider this YOUR INVITATION to join this "convoy" from Illinois to California. ALL ARE WELCOME ... REGARDLESS of transportation mode [i will rent a car, so I can enjoy the road, the people and the places more] OR how long you can join us. If you can only meet up for a morning breakfast, a daily stop, or an evening dinner, that is ENCOURAGED!

This developed from a suggestion by ChevyTalk's Bobs53PU...and, because of my own interest in Route 66, I ran with the idea. My interest in Route 66 (and other famous roads) is partly because of my interest in nostalgia and old vehicles ... partly because of the song "Route 66" ... partly because of a PBS special about a mother/daughter duo who drove Route 66 in a rented Mustang convertible ... and partly because of the movie "CARS", which featured a lot of scenes from Route 66, was based on actual people/places along Route 66, and featured history of the road, illustrating the effect of interstates, such as I-40, on life along Route 66. I will bring my DVD of the movie "Cars" and a DVD player. Perhaps we can plan to watch the movie some evening or during a meal....

    Future travel plans:

LINCOLN HIGHWAY, which runs along IL RT 38 through Geneva IL towards Elburn IL, etc.

    http://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/

US ROUTE 20, which runs through my hometown, Elgin IL, and out to Rockford/Freeport/Galena IL.

    http://www.usroute20.com/

    US ROUTE 2

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_2

    THE DIXIE HIGHWAY

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dixie_Highway

US northeast ... Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New York, etc.

US northwest ... Montana, the Dakotas, Oregon, Washington, etc.

  5. Thank ya, sir.

    You are welcome!

I can't wait to see what kind of reactions people will make. :P

... Well, those who might know but not know enough, anyway, if I'm making sense.

    Yep, understood!

I'm located in Berea, about thirty minutes south of Lexington. It would be great if you could make a stop somewhere nearby. :)

Hmmm...looks like the closest I'll get is Louisville ... that trip in October/November will be a short weekender to Nashville/Jackson TN and Birmingham AL.... But, we'll see....

I'm also in the middle of an agonizing parts hunt right now, so any connections would be that much more beneficial. I think I shot you a PM a few nights ago to see if you knew someone that could get me in touch with some parts (instrument cluster, interior trim), but I can't remember if I hit send or save or if my internet connection was crapping out on me when I was trying to send/save it.

Never got it, but I did see that post and replied. Shoot me an Email, to that address I gave in that thread. I will do my best, but be forewarned, right now, I'm gearing up for my Route 66 trip....

    http://www.cheersandgears.com/index.php?showtopic=38736

...so my time is a bit scarce.

I'll have more time to contact people and get you in touch with them when I get back, but I'll see what I can do soon....OK?

I can be in Richmond in 10 minutes. If you would want me to check it out for you, just let me know.

Please. But, it isn't for me. When you look at it, check to see if it looks "put together".... I'll explain over EMail..... Thank you!

  6. Browsing YouTube, I stumbled across a walkaround video of an '84 Monte SS with a 'Vette 355/6-speed manual setup. I noticed that this Monte's instrument cluster was not the stock Monte SS cluster.

Here is a link to the video:

    Well, shoot.

That particular Monte Carlo, whiteknight, has quite the history with many of us on MCSS and on the MC Mailing List.

As I recall, that car started out in the hands of Crazy Bill in New Mexico. I met him during my 2004 road trip out west. He has since died.

Crazy Bill sold the car to Henry on the east coast, who drove it to one of the Monte Carlo Nationals. He then sold it to another MCMLer in the Atlanta area ... the same guy who owned the '82 Chevette diesel....

    http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/200711/RT1..._JohnC_JPG.html

I believe John has either sold it ... or has it up for sale. I'm not sure what the status is....

Anyone ever seen one or know anything about this car?

    Chris,

For the life of me, I can't remember if this one was automatic or not. Giving this friend's tendency towards manual transmission cars, I'm guessing this one is NOT an automatic, but I can certainly ask him. I'm just about sure it is/was a manual (he has since sold it).....

  10. But as far as the F5 Camaro's size and weight goes, it's dimensions are much more suited to a "personal luxury (and performance, in the case of an SS model) coupe."

You are not alone in you're thinking.

As far as the size and weight, a friend of mine snapped a pic of his 4th gen MC next to the Camaro ... quite interesting indeed. Almost appears as if the Camaro should've been a Monte Carlo or Chevelle instead.......

Monte Carlo/Grand Prix/Cutlass Supreme/Regal... what a powerhouse quartet that hit the market just right, and held it for years, despite glancing blows from Chrysler with the Cordoba/Charger and Ford with the Thunderbird/Cougar.

AMEN! The styling of those four was unique enough to capture different tastes, much more so than the competition from Dodge and Ford, imho. Especially where the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar are concerned, those 2 really looked the same, from what I remember anyway. However, GM's MC/GP/CS/Regal group had enough differences between them that you KNEW which one was which just about right away, unless you were only seeing part of the car, such as the windshield, etc.....

  12. I have used the same agent since I moved to PA in 2003... I have my homeowner's insurance and car insurance through the same agent, different companies. I am so pissed at my agent right now for costing me money over the last 6+ years for my vehicle insurance because they told them I was renting my house back then!

Ouch. I hope they were able to explain it somehow....

    *sighs*

I feel your pain, though. About 10 years ago or so now, I had called to my agent to get rates on a car I was thinking of buying. After I bought the car (believe it was my '76 MC Landau, iirc), the rates I got were much higher than what I had been quoted. So, I called ... and the assistant calmly explained that they had discovered they had me as "married". When I asked for an explanation, all she could tell me was that it was a "clerical error".

So, I talked to my agent the next day when he was available. I asked how long had they had me as "married". He couldn't tell me that; all he could tell me was that ALL of my rates were going up because of that error. I was livid. If I had just started driving ... or just switched to that company ... it would've been better. BUT ... this was the same company, same agency that I had SINCE THE DAY I STARTED DRIVING ... a good 5-7 years prior to that. And, at NO time had I told them I was married. Hmph.

LOL! I know a couple people who do JUST THAT ... and LOVE tricking people ;).

I have to say, it makes the front of car appear more smooth and modern.

Yes, indeed ... especially when you compare it to the LS model of the later years. Many of us don't quite understand why GM didn't do that from the factory.....

    Thanks again Cort. :)

  17. I have to ask...why stop at Victorville?

...sadly, because I need the 3 days or so to get back home afterward. I only have so many vacation days... :(. Plus, we're not starting in Chicago, either....

    Extremely cool idea ,Cort!

    *nods*

Thank you, Camino! I sure hope people join and/or meet up along the way....

If you do the Lincoln Highway cruise, you can count me in for at least part of it.

Awesome! Maybe I'll do some next year ... we'll see ;).

    **** CONTACTS ****

Along with my __CELL PH#__ (in my signature in previous posts), you can reach me via Email to let me know if you plan to meet up anywhere along the way:

    **** SPONSORS ****

    KUDOS to...

    ...FIRST GENERATION MONTE CARLO CLUB:

Dues-paying FGMCC members participating in this event for more than 100 miles will each receive a $25 gas card. In addition, the FGMCC will sponsor food for everyone at one stop in IL, up to $100.

    ...NATIONAL MONTE CARLO OWNERS ASSOCIATION:

Dues-paying NMCOA members will receive a gift certificate or gift card. The NMOCA pledges up to $150!

**** TBDs (PLACES TO STAY / EAT) ****

If you have overnight accommodations or restaurant suggestions for the "TBD" (to be determined) places in the most-recent itinerary posted, please advise me!

I am researching possibilities; however, not everything will be finalized. In some cases, I may list possibilities so we can decide as we go; in other cases, TBDs may remain until we arrive....

    **** MONTE CARLO AZ ****

A friend sent me this link ... which I will include in the next update of the itinerary in a few weeks....:

**** WHICH CAR TO DRIVE? ****

For those of you that are planning to join us anywhere along the route, what will you be driving?

I'm not sure yet what I will drive. I may drive my 1976 Monte Carlo Landau:

    http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/mc1976/76monte.html

Of my MCs, that one is probably the most appropriate for Route 66; however, to be "road trip worthy", it needs new tires, probably a good wax, and a different radio (currently has the original AM radio)...or at least a different way to listen to tunes along the way....

Course, I may decide just to rent a car ... we'll see.....

  18. It is also amazing to me sometimes how people comment that a person(myself) is 33 years old, single, with no kids. There must therefore be something wrong with me according to said people to be in this stage of my life and not be married and have children.

Heh ... I didn't even THINK about that. My goodness mercy me ... that's another one that gets to me. Society is based on couples/families; if you're single, you are worthless...period. Ughola.

I look at it this way: If I never offend anyone, I'm not being honest.

    *nods*

I like that one, Camino! I'm going to have to use it ;).

It IS so frustrating that the negative seems to outweigh the positive. Case in point, I was sharply reminded Saturday, July 25 that...

    ...silence roars volumes.

    (and)

    ...actions speak louder than words.

Yet, I remember those more than 2 things posted in that timeframe about me....

"I love what you add to this forum, it always lightens the mood!"

[HA! I wish I felt that way all the time....]

    (and)

"You possess a drive, a spirit, a willingness, and an unflappable ability to remain cheery in the face of some dire circumstances."

[ironically, much of the time, I don't feel that way at all ... just the opposite in fact..... And, yet, I try ... and maybe that's what counts!?]

It's always so cool to see the people look as you go by, too ;). he he.

I just wish I could drive them MORE than I do .... *sighs*

Hopefully there should be lots of drving weather...

I certainly hope so, Dave. At least one weekend day the last few weekends has not been "driving friendly" ... dangblastit! ;)

It would be pretty cool if you did know the original owner. I'd really love to know the car's actual mileage. I've got pics of the Monte on here and on MonteCarloSS.com if you want to check 'er out.

    *nods*

You're welcome! Saw the pics here ... haven't been to MCSS since you bought it, so when I get there later this week, I'll "hunt" for it ;). From the pics, can't say it looks particularly familiar ... but, then again, ya never know ... lol.

  21. There was a small glimmer of hope for the Cutlass, but alas, it was not to be. When I got to work this morning, all of the clunkers had been moved to a different area in the lot but the Cutlass was still in the same spot. The keys were in the door so I got in, started her up, and took it for a ride around the lot; it ran and drove great. So I grabbed a salesman and asked him what the deal was and offered him a couple hundred bucks for it, giving him the old line about just selling it to me as-is instead of going through the hassle of prepping it for the auction, blah blah blah. So he writes the stock number down and tells me he'll find out. About a half hour goes by and he comes back and tells me no deal, it's a clunker. It's headed for the pile and I took its hood ornament for a souvenir. I would have bought it on the spot. Tried to save it but was shut down. And another one is gone forever.....

It's this and other similar stories that really just ... piss me off. But, I know ... not everyone is a "car enthusiast" ... so I have to believe that the cars were dead anyway. lol

    *sighs*

What bothers me about this, along with the trashing of perfectly good cars (sounds like that Cutlass would've been a great winter beater for me at the very least) of course, is the "lure" of a "new" car that most people are seeing.

    What they don't see?

The waste in the trashing of their "old" car.

The HIGHER insurance premiums for a brand new car.

The COST of newly-acquired loans that will drain their budget.

    Etc. etc. etc.

    *shrugs*

    Whatever.......I guess :(.
