  1. Rumors of BMW bringing back the 8-Series have been floating around since February when sources revealed there were two proposals on the table; a larger version of the 6-Series Gran Coupe and a new two-door coupe/convertible. This would only intensify over the summer when a report revealed that BMW had trademarked a number of 8-Series names. Now a new report says BMW is going forward with the 8-Series as a coupe. Automobilwoche has learned from sources that BMW will be bringing back the 8-Series in late 2018. The model will fill the gap between the 7-Series and the Rolls-Royce Ghost/Wraith/Dawn, and give the Mercedes S-Class coupe a run for its money. The coupe will come first, followed by a convertible and the option of a V12 engine. A M8 version is under discussion. Automobilwoche also reports that the 6-Series coupe and convertible will not be replaced, although the fate of the 6-Series Gran Coupe is up in the air. 2. Rumorpile: BMW 8-Series is Reportedly Go for 2018

  3. There are some big changes possibly afoot with BMW's coupe lineup. Auto Express reports that BMW will be changing the focus of the next-generation 6-Series from grand tourer to a Porsche 911 fighter. This means the 6-Series will become slightly smaller than the current model. Auto Express speculates the new 6-Series will utilize the joint BMW-Toyota platform that will underpin the next-gen Z4 and long-rumored Toyota Supra. Sources at both companies say this new platform is able to be scaled for larger models. At the moment, the proposal for the new 6-Series is for a coupe and convertible, no Gran Coupe. Which leads us to the second part of this rumor. In a separate story, Auto Express reports that BMW has trademarked a number of 8-Series names (825, 830, 835, 850, 845, 860 and M850). Of course, trademarks don't mean a product will come out. But a source at BMW says the trademarks isn't just for BMW to keep them in their custody. We first reported on the possible return of the 8-Series back in February as a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe. It is expected that the 8-Series to come in a coupe, convertible, and Gran Coupe (sedan). Source: Auto Express, 2
  4. Rumorpile: Return of the BMW 8-Series?

BMW doesn't have a vehicle that directly competes with the Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe, but Autocar says that could be changing. According to sources at BMW's R&D center in Munich, there are two proposals on the table for a new 8-Series. The first is a four-door coupe - think 6-Series Gran Coupe in a larger size - and the second is a for a two-door coupe and cabriolet. Why is BMW considering a competitor to the S-Class Coupe? Because they want to experience the same profits that Mercedes is currently enjoying. According to internal studies, Mercedes is earning up to 30,000 Euros on every S-Class they sell. That turns into a tidy profit of up to billion Euros in a year. Now if BMW decides to go forward with either option, Autocar says a concept is likely to appear in 2018. A production model would follow two years later, using the 7-Series platform. Source: Autocar
