Subaru unveiled the all-new 2027 Getaway at the 2026 New York International Auto Show, a three-row battery-electric SUV that brings 420 horsepower and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to every trim level. The Getaway is the most powerful production Subaru ever built and the brand's fourth BEV, with seating for up to seven, 8.3 inches of ground clearance, and a 95.8-kWh battery rated for more than 300 miles of range.

Buyers shopping the three-row electric family SUV segment may notice some familiar numbers in the Getaway's spec sheet: the 95.8-kWh battery, 45.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row folded, and 15.9 cubic feet with it upright are the same figures found in the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, which shares platform underpinnings with the Getaway through the longstanding Toyota-Subaru development partnership. Where the Getaway distinguishes itself is powertrain output (420 horsepower versus the Highlander's 338) and its across-the-board Symmetrical AWD with a mechanical connection between axles.

Powertrain and Range

The 2027 Getaway uses dual electric motors producing 420 combined horsepower, enough to reach 60 mph in under 5 seconds. The 95.8-kWh battery is rated for more than 300 miles of range, and a standard NACS charging port supports up to 150-kW DC fast charging, bringing the battery from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. Battery preconditioning is standard and maintains charging performance in temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit, a practical feature that many competitors make optional.

A standard-range model with a 77.0-kWh battery will also be available in 2027; Subaru has not yet released range or pricing details for that configuration.

Capability

Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard on all Getaway trim levels, with a mechanical connection between the front and rear axles. X-MODE Dual-Mode with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud settings, Grip Control, and Downhill Assist Control are also standard, along with 8.3 inches of ground clearance. Towing capacity is rated at 3,500 pounds.

Interior and Cargo

Three-row seating for up to seven is available with a second-row bench seat; second-row captain's chairs (seating six) are standard or optional depending on trim level. Subaru claims six-footers can sit comfortably in all three rows. One-touch second-row folding and power-folding third-row seats are standard across the lineup. With the third row folded, cargo space measures 45.6 cubic feet, slightly more than the Kia EV9. Third-row-upright capacity is 15.9 cubic feet.

Three-zone climate control, dedicated third-row vents, USB-C charging ports in every row, cup holders at every seat, and customizable ambient lighting are standard. An available panoramic moonroof is offered on certain trim levels, and heated front seats come standard. Heated second- and third-row seats, ventilated front and second-row seats, and a 360-degree heated steering wheel are available on higher trims.

Technology

A 14-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard, paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Two 15W wireless smartphone chargers are available up front, in addition to four USB-C ports for rear passengers. Five drive modes are available, including a customizable individual setting.

EyeSight driver assistance is standard across all trims, covering pre-collision braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist, lane change assist, and emergency stop assist. Higher trim levels add front cross-traffic alert, intelligent park assist, and a digital rearview mirror. The daytime running lights also serve as a charging status indicator when the vehicle is plugged in.

The 2027 Subaru Getaway arrives at dealers in late 2026. Pricing has not been announced. Subaru also debuted the updated Forester Wilderness with a new hybrid option at the 2026 New York International Auto Show.

Subaru of America has announced the first-ever Forester Wilderness Hybrid for 2027, bringing the efficiency of Subaru's hybrid system to its most capable Forester variant. The Forester Wilderness Hybrid uses the same Atkinson/Miller-cycle 2.5-liter SUBARU BOXER engine and series-parallel hybrid configuration as the standard Forester Hybrid, but output climbs to 194 horsepower total system power, up from 180 horsepower in the non-hybrid Forester Wilderness. Subaru claims up to 25% better fuel economy over the standard Wilderness, with official figures to be released closer to the vehicle's late 2026 on-sale date.

Capability

The Forester Wilderness Hybrid retains what made the non-hybrid model worth considering: 9.3 inches of ground clearance (achieved through longer coil springs and shock absorbers, compared to 8.7 inches in the standard Forester Hybrid), X-MODE Dual-Mode with settings for Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud, Hill Descent Control, and Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive with a mechanical front-to-rear connection. The last point is worth noting in a segment where many competitors increasingly rely on rear-biased electric AWD systems without a mechanical link between axles.

The Wilderness Hybrid's approach angle improves to 23.5 degrees versus 19 degrees in the Forester Hybrid, breakover to 20.6 degrees from 19.3, and departure to 25.5 degrees from 24.6. Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires on Wilderness-exclusive 17-inch matte black wheels complete the off-road package. Power reaches the wheels through a Lineartronic CVT.

Cargo and Utility

No hybrid tax on cargo space: the Forester Wilderness Hybrid offers 27.5 cubic feet behind the rear seats and more than 69 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, with Subaru stating no cargo volume is lost to hybrid powertrain components. A power rear gate is standard, and raised roof rails with an 800-pound static load capacity come on every trim level.

Technology

The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid gets an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with Apple Maps integration, and a Harman Kardon 11-speaker audio system rated at 576 watts equivalent. EyeSight driver assistance is standard, covering automatic emergency steering, blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert, lane change assist, and advanced adaptive cruise with lane centering, among others.

Interior surfaces use Subaru's StarTex animal-free upholstery in a Wilderness-exclusive gray textured finish, and all-weather mats with a cargo area protector are standard. Pricing will be announced closer to the late 2026 launch. Subaru also debuted the all-new 2027 Getaway EV at the 2026 New York International Auto Show.

For the first time since... forever, Subaru is now without a wagon.  The Outback has been one of Subaru's legendary vehicles since it became a trim line on the Subaru Legacy Wagon in 1994 and a model in its own right in 1999. Sales of wagons have dwindled in recent years, and with the demise of the Subaru Legacy sedan last year, there was no longer a platform for Subaru to base a wagon on. However, the Outback name has tremendous brand cache, and Subaru is looking to build on that with a new Subaru Outback SUV.  Wagon lovers, all three of them, will lament, but the march of progress never stops.

For 2026,  the Outback Wilderness trim focuses on performance both on and off road. Powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer producing 260 horsepower and a stout 277 lb-ft of torque, the Outback Wilderness promises to maintain that boxer grunt that Subaru enthusiasts crave. Power is routed through a CVT with 8-speed manual mode to Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel drive system with X-Mode. The X-MODE Dual Mode System with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes adds confidence for Outback Wilderness drivers.  Compared with the standard Outback, the all-wheel drive system is revised to allow the center differential to lock faster, thereby reducing wheelspin in low-traction situations.

The 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness also offers enhanced approach, departure, and breakover angles, compared to the rest of the 2026 Outback lineup. The approach angle has been extended to 20 degrees compared to 18 degrees; ramp breakover moves up to 21.2 degrees compared to 19.4 degrees; and the departure angle increases to 22.5 degrees compared to 21.4 degrees.

Out of the Wilderness

Those opting for a more city-appropriate Outback will find a welcome home in the non-Wilderness model. Available in Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness trim levels when it goes on sale in late 2025, non-Wilderness trims come standard with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine producing 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque and feeding the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel drive through Subaru's standard CVT.  Steering on all Outback models uses components from Subaru's WRX, providing a more direct feel and feedback. 

The 2026 Subaru Outback also comes standard with a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster with selectable views, including a new Calm Mode to minimize driver distraction for a more relaxing journey. A traditional, Normal Mode view displays gauges and information, while a map-focused mode offers destination assistance via the available onboard, cloud-based navigation system. When paired with a smartphone, a separate view projects turn-by-turn navigation from apps such as Apple Maps, and an EyeSight-focused Mode displays a large, easy-to-read view of the road ahead, including surrounding vehicles.

The all-new 2026 Subaru Outback brings along more space for passengers and cargo than any previous Outback, ensuring driver and passengers arrive prepared for their next adventure. In addition to innovative cargo solutions, the new Outback offers more space, more comfort, and smarter designs for its passengers.

Thanks to a 2-inch taller roofline and an all-new design, the Outback offers 34.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, larger by 2 cubic feet than its predecessor. The cargo area is also 2 inches taller, while the load floor width spans 43.3 inches, wider than its competitors. Flexible and durable interior utility hooks offer tie down points for gear and can be used in the liftgate to hold items such as lanterns or wet gear, up to 6 pounds.

Front and rear passengers get more headroom in the new Outback, and new low-fatigue seats mounted directly onto the chassis improve long-distance comfort and reduce head movement on longer drives. Lateral sway in the new Outback has been reduced by 42% compared to its predecessor, and an adjustable driver’s seat cushion helps to support legs for longer journeys.

Inside the cabin, the new Subaru Outback is quieter and more refined thanks to sound-absorbing materials used in the roof and headliner. Wind noise has been reduced by 10% thanks to aerodynamic elements in the body sides and roof rails.

New York - Subaru released the updated 2026 Subaru Solterra this morning with significant upgrades to better serve EV buyers.

The 2026 Solterra brings Subaru's first pure EV model up to popular specs. A 25-percent increase in range bring the expected range up to 285 miles in optimal conditions. Starting with this model year, the Solterra will adopt the NACS port, enabling charging at an additional 15,000 locations, including select Tesla Superchargers across North America. Charge speed has also increased, and when using pre-conditioning, the 2026 Solterra can accept power at a rate of up to 150kw, allowing for charging from 10-percent to 80-percent in roughly 35 minutes.

The front and rear motors are managed with a new controller, enabling more flexible power power transfer. In base form, the front and rear motors combine to make 233 horsepower. For the first time, the Solterra will be offered in a higher-performance XT version with 338 horsepower, enough to propel the Solterra XT form 0-60 in less than 5 seconds. 

All Solterras are equipped with Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with X-Mode for more off-road situations. Subaru made refinements to the suspension and drive system to predict movement and adjust power accordingly for a smoother and more predicable ride.

Inside, an all-new infotainment system features a 14-inch screen with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. Dual wirelss phone chargers are standard up front with high-powered USB-C chargers for rear passengers. 

The front of the new 2026 Solterra debuts an all-new Subaru EV lighting signature with a six-star illuminated logo, redesigned headlamps, a new front bumper design, and newly designed 20- and 18-inch wheels. Around the back, a new rear badge, rear gate garnish, and spoiler bring a distinctive nighttime lighting presence and improve aerodynamic performance.

Pricing and detailed specifications for the 2026 Subaru Solterra will be available when it goes on sale later this year.

New York - Subaru unveiled the 2026 Subaru Trailseeker to a packed crowd as the New York International Auto Show this morning.  The Trailseeker is Subaru's first fully in-house electric vehicle and Subaru promises another electric SUV, likely based on this same platform, later this year.

The Trailseeker come standard with Subaru's legendary Symetrical All-Wheel Drive system with dual motors placed at the front and rear of axles. With around 375 horsepower available, the Trailseeker is rated to tow 3,500 lbs. An X-Mode system allows for further off-road chops offering Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes, Grip control, and downhill assist.

Power comes from a 74.7 kWh lithium ion pack capable of delivering at least 260 miles to a charge in optimum conditions. Subaru is moving to the NACS charge port standard, enabling a wide range of charging options, including up to 15,000 additional Tesla charging stations. The Trailseeker accepts up to 150kw charging and can charge from 10-percent to 80-percent in as little as 35 minutes when using the battery preconditioning system.

Compared to Subaru's other offering, the Solterra, the Trailseeker is 6-inches longer and an inch taller than the Solterra. Inside, the open cabin is punctuated by a 14-inch touchscreen, the largest ever in a Subaru. Metallic finishes along the dash emphasize the horizontal theme, and a wide center console provides a centralized hub for devices and personal items for easy storage.

The standard 14-inch Subaru Multimedia touchscreen offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility for entertainment on the go. Two wireless, 15W smartphone chargers keep devices charged, while two fast USB-C chargers keep rear-seat passengers connected.

Today in Tokyo, Subaru put forth an ambitious plan. By the mid-2030s, the Japanese automaker will only sell electric vehicles worldwide. This announcement comes as no surprise as both China and Europe have announced stricter emissions regulations that will be coming in the near future.

But to reach that goal, Subaru will be working with Toyota (which owns a 8.7 percent stake in Subaru) on developing both hybrid and electric vehicles. In a statement, Subaru executives said work has started on a “strong hybrid” vehicle using Toyota technology. No other details were provided. The two are also working on full-electric vehicles that will launch sometime this decade. These vehicles will play a key role in Subaru's goal of having 40 percent of vehicles sold be all-electric and electrified cars by 2030.

Despite this change in direction for powertrains, Subaru executive's stress their vehicles will retain the key traits that have their vehicles unique.

“Although we’re using Toyota technology, we want to make hybrids that are distinctly Subaru,” said Subaru's Chief Technology Officer Tetsuo Onuki.

“It’s not only about reducing CO2 emissions. We need to further improve vehicle safety and the performance of our all-wheel drive.”

Due to some stock dealings recently, Toyota now holds just over 20% of Subaru's stock. As the two companies grow closer together, we can expect more platform and engineering sharing to happen.  Case in point, the next WRX.

The next WRX is still a few years away, however, Toyota and Subaru are already collaborating together on a shared platform the WRX would use. There is also a rumor that the pair are working on something new called "Super AWD", but it doesn't go into detail as to what the technology would be.  

There is also the possibility of an AWD compact sports coupe that would have the same performance level as the WRX STI.   The current STI is fading out in Japan where production ends in December with the EJ20 Final Edition.  The WRX STI runs with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that makes 304 horsepower and 311 lb.-ft of torque. 

Toyota is in plans to purchase additional shares of Subaru to raise its stake to over 20% from around 17% today. Subaru in kind will also invest back in Toyota via a similar stock purchase of Toyota. If the deal is approved by Toyota's board, it is a step towards making Subaru a whole owned subsidiary that would create a 'Mega Toyota'.  Toyota recently announced a similar purchase of Suzuki shares to form a new alliance for the Indian market. 

Toyota and Subaru have worked together before on projects such as the Subaru BRZ / Toyota 86 and Subaru for a time built Toyota Camrys at its plant in Indiana.

Toyota sees Subaru as being strong in sport utility vehicles and in all-wheel drive technology. Toyota and Subaru have also announced plans to jointly build a platform for an electric SUV.

Subaru has announced pricing for the 2020 Subaru Legacy and 2020 Subaru Outback. Both get modest price increases, but also increases in base equipment.  The Legacy starting price is $200 more than last year at $24,995, and the Outback is $300 more at $26,645. 

Some of the biggest equipment upgrades is that Subaru's Eyesight now features Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering, a heads up monitoring system, LED headlights for low and high beam, and high beam assist. 

Both cars are built on Subaru's new global platform that offers increased safety, and reductions in noise, vibration, and harshness. The base engine is a revised 2.5 liter boxer-four that produces 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. An upgraded 2.4T boxer engine is standard in Limited XT models and produces 260 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 277 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm.  Both engines come with start-stop to improve fuel efficiency.  

Fuel economy figures are as follows:

Legacy 2.5 - 35 MPG highway
Legacy XT - 32 MPG highway
Outback 2.5 - 33 MPG highway
Outback XT - 30 MPG highway

The only transmission available is Subaru's Lineartronic CVT that now has an 8-speed manual shift mode via paddles on the steering wheel. 

Six different trims are available on the Legacy and seven different trims available on the Outback. Inside, the infotainment system features dual 7.0 inch touch screens.  The upper screen controls the audio with Apple Car Play and Android Auto, while the lower screen controls climate control, controls for Eyesight, and other vehicle systems. 

Both the Legacy and Outback are built in Lafayette, IN, and will go on sale this fall.

Subaru's first plug-in hybrid is just around the corner. The 2019 Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid is expected to debut later this month at the LA Auto Show. As we reported back in February, Subaru would be using the electric powertrain from Toyota's Prius Prime, teamed with one of their boxer engines. We now have some new details on the Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid via a California Air Resources Board (CARB) filing.

Autoblog obtained the document which reveals that the Crosstrek PHEV will utilize a 2.0L boxer-four engine (most likely the same engine found in standard Crosstrek). The document also lists an electric range at 25.650 miles based on the Urban Dynamometer Driving Schedule - replicates city driving conditions. That's very similar to the Toyota Prius Prime when it is put into EV mode.

But this also prompts some questions. Is the Crosstrek PHEV using a larger battery than the Prius Prime? We would think the added weight of the all-wheel-drive system would bring the range down. Also, is the electric motor providing power to all four wheels or just to one of the axles?

Hopefully, we'll some get answers in the near future.

While the Trump administration is still deciding whether or not to put tariffs on imported vehicles, certain automakers are bracing for the worst.

During a briefing in Tokyo, Subaru is predicting a "big impact" if the U.S. does put tariffs into place.

“It’s a fact that there would be a big impact from a U.S. tariff increase. We’re studying what the impact might be but there are too many unknowns at this point, so we want to refrain from giving a specific figure,” said Toshiaki Okada, Subaru's Chief Financial Officer.

Of the 670,900 vehicles it sold in the U.S. through the year that ended in March, about half were imported, including the Forester. The rest of the vehicles - Legacy,  Outback, and Ascent - are built in Indiana.

According to data gathered by Bloomberg, Subaru would be the hardest hit by tariffs as over 67 percent of their revenues from North America. This is more than Honda (52.5 percent), Nissan (48.9 percent), and Toyota (35.2 percent).

Subaru has been on a roll in the U.S. with 79 months of steady month-over-month growth. But Subaru wants to spread that success to other markets and has a new five-year to try an achieve this.

Today in Tokyo, Newly appointed Subaru President Tomomi Nakamura unveiled the plan known as STEP - speed, trust, engagement, and peace of mind.

"The automotive industry is now in a tumultuous time. Subaru’s fast growth in recent years has come to highlight our challenges. The question is how we, as a small-scale company, will be able to survive in this big-changing area," said Nakamura.

Subaru wants to increase global sales from the 1.1 million vehicles it expects to sell in the current fiscal year to 1.3 million vehicles in the fiscal year on March 31, 2026. To do this, Subaru is planning to launch a number of new products including a hybrid and a "global strategic SUV" in the early 2020s. Furthermore, Subaru will evolving their "Dynamic X Solid design language into a "bolder" expression" and "enhancing sporty models."

On the technology front, Subaru is planning to offer Level 2 autonomous capability (i.e. Cadillac Super Cruise and Tesla's Autopilot) around 2020 and higher levels by 2024. It is also planning to offer some sort of connectivity in "80 percent of new vehicles in major markets" by 2022.

STEP will also be focusing on regaining trust in Subaru's home market. Last year, Subaru admitted that it had uncertified workers carrying out tests on new cars for Japan for decades. Early this year, the scandal got worse as Subaru revealed that inspectors falsified fuel economy and emission data. It led Japan's transportation ministry to reprimand Subaru and 417,288 vehicles to be recalled in the country.

Ford's announcement of dropping most of their lineup of traditional cars likely caused a number of automakers to consider doing something similar. One automaker that will not be doing this is Subaru.

Dominick Infante, Subaru’s national manager of product communications told Motor Trend one of the key reasons they keeping traditional cars is increasing gas prices.

“Gas prices are starting to come up now. So a good hedge for better economy is having a sedan,” said Infante.

“So we still make the Impreza and the Impreza hatchback. They do get better gas mileage than say a comparable CUV like the Crosstrek so we do sell those so if the market does change that’ll help sales of sedans.”

Subaru's entry-level Impreza helps bring first-buyers in and performance models like the WRX/STI and BRZ draw in customers in their late 20s and early 30s.

Still, Subaru's car lineup is taking it on the chin. Here are the sales numbers through April,

Impreza: 22,287 (Down 16.3% YTD)
Legacy: 14,730 (Down 13.9% YTD)
WRX/STI: 9,854 (Down 8.2% YTD)
BRZ: 1,286 (Down 10.1% YTD)

Their crossover lineup is doing slightly better. Again, here are the sales numbers through April,

Crosstrek: 45,728 (Up 66.6% YTD)
Outback: 58,205 (Up 2% YTD)
Forester: 50,783 (Down 9.7% YTD)

Some recent comments made by Subaru UK's managing director, Chris Graham has some wondering if manual transmissions will become an endangered species for the company.

According to Auto Express, Subaru has been putting more focus on their EyeSight driver-assist technology - comprised of stereo cameras on the windshield to provide adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, and lane keep assist. Subaru doesn't offer this on any model equipped with manual transmission and there doesn't appear to be any plans to engineer EyeSight for manuals.

”I’m not sure if it’s compatible at all with a manual gearbox. There are certainly no rumours we’ve heard that manual will continue, or Eyesight will be [offered] with manual," said Graham.

“My gut tells me it will be Eyesight with Lineartronic ongoing and long term. They want to steal the mantle of the safest car in the world. I think if they do that, then they say ‘here’s a manual without Eyesight’, they’ll just ruin that [message]."

This decision could affect the next-generation STI. Graham said he would like to see the manual stay, but Subaru has the final say.

"For me an STI has to be a manual in the guise it is today, however if you look at [auto-only] M-series BMWs, I don’t think this is the end and I’d be very excited if they had a hybrid petrol STI. That would be phenomenal in terms of its acceleration,” said Graham.

Before you start getting out the pitchforks and torches, let us take a few steps back. The comments made by Graham could only be for European market vehicles. As an example, the Crosstrek in the UK is only offered with a CVT. In the U.S., Subaru offers both a CVT and manual transmission.

Subaru will be launching their first plug-in hybrid for the U.S. later this year and plans on offering a full electric vehicle in 2021. But to pull both of these off, Subaru is enlisting various automakers to help.

Takeshi Tachimori, Subaru's chief technical officer said they are drawing heavily on partnerships with Daihatsu, Hino, Mazda, Suzuki, and Toyota to help with the upcoming plug-in hybrid and EV. The reason for using the expertise of other automakers is Subaru's r&d budget doesn't stretch to include in-house development of these models.

"We can't engage in a large-scale development," he told Automotive News.

As more stringent emission regulations come into effect around the world, Subaru is counting on this plan to meet them.

Tachimori also talked about the upcoming plug-in hybrid. While he wouldn't reveal what model it will be based on, he did say the model would use the powertrain from the Toyota Prius Prime with a twist: the gas engine will be one of Subaru's boxer engines.

"For our plug-in hybrid to be introduced this year, we have used Toyota's technologies as much as possible," said Tachimori.

The plug-in hybrid will be sold initially in states that have adopted California's zero-emission vehicle regulations.

Japan's manufacturing industry has been rocked by a number of scandals through the past year. It has ranged from inflating fuel economy figures, fabrication of product data, and recently, improper inspections of Japanese market vehicles by Nissan and Subaru. Now a new scandal has come to light.

Subaru has revealed that it is investigating whether or not mileage readings on their vehicles were falsified during final inspection. According to Reuters, the mileage readings are used as an indicator for fuel efficiency. The company is checking to see if this data affected its official mileage readings and whether exported models are involved.

"At the moment we are trying to confirm whether data was indeed fabricated, and if so, how this happened and which models are affected," said Subaru spokeswoman Miyuki Yasuda.

This revelation stems from a current investigation being done by external investigators into final inspections being done by uncertified workers for JDM vehicles. Some inspectors told the investigators "that mileage data had been altered on some sample vehicle models tested during final checks."

“Coming on the heels of the certified inspection issue, this could be a sign of a bigger problem of how Subaru manages its manufacturing operations,” said Janet Lewis, head of Asia transportation research at Macquarie Securities.

Subaru's stock price fell as much as 8.5 percent during trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange when this news came to light.

When Subaru launched their new modular global platform in the Impreza, they said the platform was designed to accept different powertrains such as hybrid and electric. According to a report from Autocar, Subaru's first electric model is just around the corner.

Subaru's chief designer, Mamoru Ishii told the outlet that the electric vehicle would be a variant of one of their current models and will launch in 2020.

“Subaru cars are designed to support people’s lifestyles, so it should not be a case of designing the car for the powertrain. If customers want change we’ll respond - our cars are about customers loving using them how they are designed - but we are not going to change our design focus just to highlight a new way of powering the car,” said Ishii.

Ishii declined to say how far Subaru is in development of the EV, but sources tell Autocar that crash tests have started to determine if the battery location is safe.

If we were to guess what model Subaru is using for their electric vehicle, the Impreza seems like a safe bet.

When the next-generation Subaru WRX STI arrives sometime in 2020 or so, it will not have the turbocharged 2.5L boxer-four engine. Speaking with Dutch automotive site AutoRAI, Subaru Europe's General Manager of sales and marketing manager David Dello Stritto said the current engine would not be able to meet upcoming emission standards.

"CO2 emissions are becoming increasingly important and the current 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbo boxer engine simply can not continue to be used in the future. We do not say goodbye to the WRX STI, the car belongs to Subaru, but there will be a period where we will temporarily not run WRX STI," explained Dello Stritto.

We've previously heard that Subaru is considering using a hybrid power for the next WRX and WRX STI. When asked by AutoRAI about this, Dello Stritto said it was "something we have to investigate."

Subaru is one the few automakers that hasn't jumped on the electric vehicle bandwagon. But that could be changing as the company is considering building electric versions of their current models.

Subaru CEO Yasuyuki Yoshinaga told Bloomberg in an interview said the automaker is looking into installing electric powertrains in current models instead of building an all-new model. Yoshinaga said this would allow Subaru not to partner with another automaker and allow the electric versions to capitalize on the recognition of a model's name.

“If there’s already an attractive Subaru model, for example the XV crossover, and if a customer in Beijing wants one but is only allowed to buy an electric vehicle, if there’s no electric version then he can’t buy it. Providing the choice of an EV means the customer can still desire the same Subaru,” said Yoshinaga. 

Subaru has set aside $1.2 billion for R&D for the coming fiscal year, with the priority focusing on electric vehicles. The company is hoping to launch a plug-in hybrid next year with an electric vehicle to follow in 2021. It doesn't hurt that Subaru's new modular platform was engineered to handle various powertrains, including all-electric.

If you have read any review of the all-new Subaru Impreza, then you'll know there is one issue that many have pointed out - the anemic 2.0L four-cylinder. Masahiko Inoue, Subaru project general manager product and portfolio division told CarAdvice that he has been getting a lot of complaints with this engine.

“Everybody is requesting from me a more powerful engine. Everybody thinks it needs more power. They are satisfied, they understand the Subaru Global Platform and the new 2.0-litre engine – but needing more power is a common complaint from everybody,” said Inoue.

Inoue said the brand is looking at various options to solve this issue such as using a larger displacement engine (possibly the 2.5L from the Forester), turbocharging, or even a hybrid. But the final decision ultimately rests on how well the Impreza and sister model, the XV (Crosstrek for North America) sells. 

“Of course, we are studying, and we are now studying one of the options: a 2.4- or 2.5-litre engine, downsized and turbocharged, and power supported by motor, a hybrid. Every way we are studying for the next model, or the future model," said Inoue.

“But we cannot spend money on this vehicle, because this is an entry vehicle for Subaru. We have to keep competitive with the cost for the entry vehicles, so if the turbocharged model is requested, maybe it will go to the Forester, or the Levorg, or another vehicle.”

It is no secret that Subaru is wanting to get back in the three-row crossover fight after the failure of the Tribeca. We got our first preview last year at the LA Auto Show with the Viziv-7 Concept and now we're getting some idea of what the production version will look like thanks to some spy shots.

From all angles, the production version (possibly named Ascent) is heavily toned down from the Viziv-7 concept. The front end is reminiscent to the Outback with the large grille and smaller headlights. Around back, the Ascent loses the aggressive bumper design found on the concept but it looks like the design of the tailgate remains.

It is expected that Subaru's upcoming crossover will use the new modular platform that underpins the Impreza. We still don't have any idea on what will power it, but it would be safe to assume a CVT and all-wheel drive will come standard.

Subaru will reveal the Ascent sometime next year.

The Subaru Impreza is beginning to hit dealers and that is causing everyone to wonder when the next WRX and STI are coming.

Motoring spoke with a senior Subaru engineer who revealed that the next-generation WRX/STI will not arrive till 2020. 

“The WRX will have a facelift soon, not a full model cycle, because the new model just launched in 2015,” said the engineer.

“The full model cycle will be about four or five years, and that’s when you’ll see a full model. We would love to have the WRX on the new platform, because the car would be a lot better … but the 2018 will be a facelift only.”

Rumor has it that the next WRX will adopt some sort of hybrid powertrain that will increase power and reduce emissions.

Subaru's green credentials aren't the best as it only sells one hybrid in the U.S. (XV Crosstrek Hybrid) and one in Japan (Impreza Sport Hybrid). But that could be changing in 2021.

Japanese newspaper Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun reports that Subaru plans on launching an electric crossover in the U.S. by 2021. This crossover is expected to use Subaru's new modular platform that was revealed earlier this year. The report doesn't say anything about power or possible range, nor does it say how it got this information.

When asked by Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun, Fuji Heavy spokesman Masato Saito said the company hasn't made any decision on introducing an electric vehicle. Saito went on to say that if Subaru did go forward with an EV, it would likely target the North American marketplace.

Subaru and mid-engine sports car? It seems like a fantasy that someone has dreamed up, but a report says such a thing does exist.

Car and Driver has learned that Subaru is playing around with an experimental mid-engine coupe prototype. It is said to be a modified BRZ with a different all-wheel system - electric motors powering the front wheels and a turbocharged Boxer engine powering the rear wheels. The prototype is also said to use Subaru's new modular platform.

“Whether the end result will be a two-door sports coupe or some kind of sports crossover/CUV is still in the evaluation stage,” the source said.

“A coupe seems more likely, though.”

Why is Subaru working on this? Word has it that Subaru dealers in the U.S. - the company's biggest market - want something special. The home office listened and is working on this.

The report goes on to say that a concept of this mid-engine vehicle will debut in about two years to gauge reaction from the press and public.

Now for something completely out of left field. A report from Motoring.com.au says the next-generation Subaru WRX STI could go hybrid.

A source tells the Australian website that the Japanese automaker has two hybrid systems under development as a way to increase performance while improving fuel economy and emission levels.

The first system pairs a turbocharged 2.0L boxer-four with an electric motor and six-speed dual-clutch automatic. Total output of this stands at 321 horsepower, about 20 horsepower more than the current STI. The other system is a plug-in hybrid that would have the turbocharged engine powering the front wheels, while the back wheels will be solely powered by an electric motor on the rear axle.

The report says we could be seeing the hybrid STI next year, followed by the plug-in a year later.

AutoGuide recently found patent filing in Japan for a possible hardcore version of the Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GT86. The filing features renderings of a coupe with a new front end, large rear wing, and a new set of wheels. This looks similar to the Subaru STI Performance Concept shown at the New York Auto Show earlier this year.

Now the filing has Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries - Subaru's parent company - listed as the creators. Not surprising since both have been working together on this coupe.

One of the big questions lingering over this filing aside from when we could actual see this, is how much performance could this coupe have. The STI Performance Concept boasted around 300 horsepower from a turbocharged 2.0L boxer-four.

Subaru tried to get into the crossover game in 2006 with the B9 Tribeca, but odd styling, poor fuel economy for a crossover, and an ill-fated partnership with Saab via GM to build a 9-6x version for them doomed the Tribeca to obscurity. By 2013, Subaru was selling just 120 Tribecas per month on average, and in 2014 Subaru finally pulled the plug.

Now, Subaru is announcing it is getting back into the larger crossover game with a new 3-row crossover, larger than the Tribeca, due out in 2018. The as yet unnamed vehicle will be built at Subaru's plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

As for what it may look like, we can get some hints on the styling direction Subaru might take via the Subaru Viziv Concept shown at the Tokyo Auto Show last month. While the Viziv is smaller than the coming production Crossover, expect some of the styling elements to carry forward.

Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries has a plan to increase to increase overall value by 2020. To help them out, Subaru has plans on expanding their performance arm, STI in the U.S.

"The United States is the highest priority for STI. We'd like to create a car that drivers can control like their own legs so they can push the car to the limit," said STI President Yoshio Hirakawa to Automotive News.

STI has three parts to its business: Complete vehicles, performance parts, and motorsports. At the moment, the U.S. is STI's biggest market for vehicles. 2014 saw 6,500 WRX STIs be sold in the U.S.

How does Subaru plan on expanding STI in the U.S.? We got a sneak peek at New York earlier this month when the automaker showed off STI Performance Concept which takes the BRZ coupe ands and number of parts from STI including a new body kit and suspension pieces. Subaru spokesman Michael McHale said a BRZ STI will be coming in a couple years.

Subaru will also wind down their SPT (Subaru Performance Tuning) line of performance parts and replace it with STI parts.

Subaru is planning a new seven-seat crossover for the U.S. marketplace that will be out in the next couple of years. But there is one problem the company is dealing with at the moment: should we go with a Forester-inspired or Outback-inspired look?

"How can we differentiate the position of our product? That is the fundamental strategy," said " said Nobuhiko Murakami, senior vice president of global marketing for Subaru's parent company Fuji Heavy Industries.

Both options have advantages: the Forester is easily-recognizable as a crossover, while the Outback has the rugged, off-road look. The one option Subaru will be avoiding is the Tribeca - the automaker's first attempt at a seven-seat crossover. The odd looks made the Tribeca a poor seller.

But one thing is for certain - the seven seat crossover is a U.S. only affair.

"Our resources are limited, and we have to develop our product by putting our major focus on the United States. This is the only way we will survive," said Murakami.

Subaru might be the next automaker to follow the downsizing trend. Speaking with Australian outlet CarAdvice.com.au, Yoichi Hori, Subaru's deputy general manager engineering department mentioned the possibility of dropping their six-cylinder engine - used in the Legacy and Outback models - and replacing it with a turbocharged four-cylinder.

“Our research said the six-cylinder model is decreasing in the world. So that’s why probably the future, many companies take the smaller displacement with a turbocharger, or diesel, or hybrid," said Hori.

As for a possible engine size, Hori mentioned that a 2.0L would be just right.

“In terms of the body size, a 2.0-litre with a turbocharger is enough, I think.”

Toyota and Subaru's partnership on the GT 86/Scion FR-S/BRZ is well known, but it could be a one time thing. Toyota has turned to BMW for help on a new flagship sports car, rumored to be a spiritual successor to the Supra. Because of this, the speculation has been flowing of whether this partnership could expand to other sports cars.

Drive.com.au had the chance to speak with Tetsuya Tada, the chief engineer for the GT 86 family. Tada said the next-generation GT 86 could be part of the BMW partnership. However when asked if Subaru will be a part of this, Tada said "Maybe, but this is not decided at the moment."

When asked if BMW could take the place of Subaru in the partnership, Tada said "That is one possibility."

Earlier this month, we reported in the rumorpile that Subaru was possibly reconsidering bringing back the WRX hatchback.

“We have received strong interest from the US, where the hatchback was 50 per cent (of previous-generation WRX sales), so we're now considering,” said Masuo Takatsu, Subaru's general manager for the WRX. “The main target for WRX is the US, Japan is number two, Australia number three. Basically, we target these three markets."

However, the dream of the WRX hatchback has been brought to an end. Motor Trend learned from a source at Subaru that the American office was surprised by the comments made by Takatsu and decided to contact the home office to find out what's going on. Long story short, Subaru isn't doing a WRX hatchback because it would be expensive to develop both.

Sigh... Back to the wishing well then.

The biggest complaint laid before the 2015 Subaru WRX aside from the styling is the lack of a hatchback. This is a bit odd since the last-generation WRX hatchback made up 50 percent of sales in the U.S. But a new report says Subaru is reconsidering this.

Motoring.com.au talked with Masuo Takatsu, Subaru's general manager for the WRX. He said the company is thinking about bring back the hatchback.

Takatsu explained that a lack of resources led to there being no hatchback and more interestingly, a automatic version of the STi.

Despite just showing off the new 2015 Legacy at the Chicago Auto Show, Subaru has some changes incoming. Car & Driver reports that the automaker is working on a replacement on 3.6L flat-six that will appear the mid-cycle refresh, most likely happening in three years. The new flat-six engine will be 3.0 liters and pack more power than the current 256 horsepower from the 3.6L. Its unknown if the engine will have direct-injection or a turbocharger.

Also, Subaru is considering dropping in the direct-injected and turbocharged 2.0L FA boxer-four engine that is found in the Forester XT and WRX. No timeframe has been set if given the greenlight.

If you ever wanted to see a case of mixed messages in the automotive world, let us introduce you to the mess with Toyota and Subaru over the GT86 Convertible. Automotive News spoke with Subaru brand chief Yasuyuki Yoshinaga and asked about GT86/BRZ Convertible. Yoshinaga dismissed the notion of convertible, citing the vehicles would need a redesign of the structure for that to happen.

"We make the car, so if we don't make it, it can't happen. Our engineering department told me that losing the entire roof requires a complete redesign of the structure. It would need a big change."

This kind of plays into a rumorpile story from last month where the GT86 Convertible project was canned for the time-being, possibly due to the model needing a lot reinforcing, thus adding weight and ruining the perfect weight balance.

Yet, Toyota is still showing off GT86 Convertible concept and creating a number of variations to show off at auto shows. Also consider the comment made by Toyota Europe President Didier Leroy made back in March when the GT86 Open concept was introduced,

"I know you are all wondering about facts and figures, and body rigidity. Well, we have the same worries and Tada [chief engineer of the GT 86] and his team are deep into analysis. But GT86 was designed from the start as a cabriolet… That probably tells you all you needed to know."

Someone apparently didn't tell Subaru or the two automakers disagree on the convertible idea.

"I understand well that Toyota is receiving strong requests from the American market for the car. But the biggest challenge is meeting our internal safety standards. There are big technical difficulties," said Yoshinaga.

Earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, Subaru premiered the WRX Concept. It was one of the stars of the show thanks to its very dramatic styling. Now a new report from Automotive News says Subaru is readying the production version to be shown at the LA Auto Show in November.

The new WRX is expected to be a four-door only and leave it dirt roots of previous models. Subaru has said the new model will be more focused for road duty. Power will come from a turbocharged 2.5L boxer-four producing somewhere in the range of 265 to 290 horsepower.

Coming off a very successful year which saw its stock rise fivefold, Subaru is at a crossroad. Do they stay as a niche player or go mainstream? That's a question that executives at Subaru and Fuji Heavy will decide as a new report from Bloomberg says discussions will begin next month.

"We're standing at a major turning point for Subaru. It shouldn't just be about volumes. We should be making cars only Subaru can make that are a little more expensive and more profitable than the competition," said Fuji Heavy President Yasuyuki Yoshinaga.

"Some people in the company may want to make mass-market products or cheaper cars, but is this really the right direction for Subaru? We're not a carmaker that can grow as big as Toyota. And even if we could, reaching that sort of scale would mean we'd stop being Subaru."

The discussions will focus on whether Subaru should stick to its core group of products, expand its current lineup, or develop cheaper vehicles for emerging markets.

The 2014 Subaru Forester has been a great success so far. Last month, Subaru moved 9,366 Foresters, representing a 65.3% increase when compared to last year. However, Subaru is worried they might not have enough stock of Foresters to keep up with the demand.

Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru's parent company) tells the Wall Street Journal the company originally targeted 8,000 monthly sales, but the SUV could eclipse 10,000 this month.

"If this situation persists, we'll face a supply shortage," said Yoshinaga.

At the moment, Subaru dealers currently have a 16 day supply of Foresters. A low number when you consider that industry average is hovering around 63 days.

Yoshinaga said the company has all of its plants in Japan at full capacity to keep up with demand. An increase in Forester production at the moment is a dream.

A few weeks after Subaru showed off the WRX Concept at the New York Auto Show, spy photographers caught the first images of a heavily camouflaged WRX making its way onto the Nürburgring.

While the concept was very radical and dare I say sexy, the one in the spy shots looks to be toned down from the concept and appears to be derivative of the current model. Now it could be Subaru is still trying to figure out what the final design will look like. We'll be keeping a close eye on this.

Subaru was one of the automakers who actually saw increase in sales during the recent recession. But with auto sales coming back to pre-recession levels, Subaru is pondering whether to add models to help fill in product gaps in the lineup. Wards Auto recently talked with Ken Lin, director-product management for the brand.

Currently, the biggest void in Subaru’s lineup is the lack of a competitive three-row crossover, something the Tribeca isn’t. Lin admits this, but doesn’t say that Subaru will end production of the model. Instead, Subaru is looking at creating a larger, three-row crossover.

Lin also talked about that Subaru is looking at more upscale versions of the current lineup.

“Luxury is certainly one of the opportunities with profit potential. We could do touring-editions of products but would not be competing with BMW or Mercedes. There is no move to create another brand.”

Finally, Lin says Subaru will be introducing a hybrid model sometime later this year. This confirms a report back in January. Lin says the model will utilize a nickel-metal-hydride battery, not lithium-ion.

Subaru looks to be joining the hybrid fray by readying a vehicle with a new hybrid powertrain for this year's New York Auto Show.

Kenichi Yamamoto, director of product management and coordination at Subaru of America told The Detroit Bureau that Subaru's parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries is getting a hybrid model ready. Yamamoto explained the Japanese market's interest in hybrid vehicles has been on the rise, with most coming from Toyota, Nissan, and Honda.

Details are scarce on Subaru's hybrid model. Officials say the model could debut in the spring.

Subaru has previewed a hybrid powertrain with the 2011 Advanced Tourer Concept, which use a turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder boxer engine mated to an in-house hybrid drivetrain.

Subaru is doing its best to keep up with the demand of the new BRZ coupe. Since its arrival at dealers in May, Subaru has sold 3,467 BRZs; well over half of the 6,000 BRZs that Subaru of America has asked for annually.

"We are selling all the BRZs we can get.We have been sold out since the car was introduced," said Subaru of America's COO Tom Doll.

Doll told Automotive News that they will be getting an extra 2,000 BRZs over the next four months to help keep up with demand. At this point, its unclear if Subaru of America will continue with the boost in volume.

According to a new report from Automotive News, Subaru is working on a turbocharged version of the 2.0L boxer-four used in the BRZ.

A source tells AN that this 2.0L will utilize a new a twin-scroll turbocharger and a new direct-injection system that will produce an estimated 280 HP and a excess of 250 lb-ft of torque.

The turbocharged BRZ will arrive sometime in the 2014 model year.

This is a 180-degree turn from earlier this year when Subaru global marketing manager Atoshi Atake said there would be no turbo BRZ due to space constraints of the BRZ's engine bay and wanting to keep turbocharging separate from the BRZ to the rest of the Subaru lineup.

A few images of what appears to be the new Subaru Forester have made their way onto the web. The images are reportedly from the Forester's Japanese market brochure.

The Forester's exterior is now in line with the rest of the Subaru lineup thanks to a new front end , sleeker taillights, and a new sculpted hatch. The interior is lifted form the new Impreza.

Under the new skin lies a new platform from the new Impreza. Dimension wise, the Forester has grown in most areas, while retaining a 103 in. wheelbase.

Power for the Japanese market Forester will come in the form of 2.0L boxer-four producing 146 HP and a 2.0L turbo boxer-four producing 276 HP. As for the North American market, the engine could be the 2.5L boxer-four producing 173 HP.

The new Forester is expected to be revealed sometime later this year, with sales beginning sometime in 2013.

On the face of it, these spy pictures of a Subaru Impreza undergoing some hot weather testing might not deserve the attention of a news story. Its only when you notice the large vent on the hood that you realize why we're talking about. Say hello the next WRX.

The vehicle in the spy photos looks to be mule for the next generation WRX and underneath the hood is likely the new turbocharged 2.0L Subaru FA engine. We're expecting a modest increase in horsepower and torque from the previous generation WRX.

Subaru has announced pricing for the new XV Crosstrek, aka the rugged Impreza. Starting at $21,995 (doesn't include a $795 destination charge), the XV Crosstrek gets rugged, SUV-like styling, a stiffened suspension, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance (about 3 inches higher than the normal Impreza).

Standard equipment for the XV Crosstrek include a 2.0L boxer four-cylinder that produces 148 HP and 145 lb-ft of torque, five-speed manual, a six-speaker AM/FM/CD sound system with iPod integration, USB and AUX inputs, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, and 17-inch alloy wheels. The options list includes a CVT, leather, sunroof, and a navigation system.

Fuel economy for XV Crosstrek is,

Manual: 23 City/30 Highway

CVT: 25 City/33 Highway

The XV Crosstrek arrives at Subaru dealers later in the fall.

Remember the Subaru Advance Tourer concept from the 2011 Tokyo Auto Show? If not, it was a polarizing wagon concept that many believed was a preview for the next Legacy. However, a new report from Motor Trend says the concept is actually a preview of the next generation WRX.

The next generation WRX and STI will split from the Impreza and utilize a separate platform. Powertrain is expected to be either a turbocharged 1.6L or 2.0L four-cylinder. Also being thrown around is a hybrid version of the 1.6L.

Sources say the front end design of the Advanced Tourer will make its way to the new WRX, along with other aspects.

“Turbocharging” isn’t quite the dirty word it used to be these days. With strict fuel economy standards looming in the near horizon and the price of a gallon of gas unstable, automakers have turned to building and selling smaller turbo-powered engines to increase fuel economy without losing power. Buyers also seem to be responding favorably to turbo engines — for example, Ford's EcoBoost F-150 is enjoying better sales than comparable V8 models.

While it seems like a win-win situation on spec sheets and in sales, in the real word modern turbocharged engines still sometimes suffer from turbo lag and require additional, sometimes complicated piping. And although something like Chrysler’s 1.4 liter turbo four will undoubtedly be more reliable than its primitive ancestors from the 1980s, automakers are still constantly looking at ways to improve and reduce the drawbacks associated with turbocharged engines.

Enter Subaru then, who is considering replacing the exhaust-gas driven turbocharger on its WRX performance model for an electric-powered design. According to Australia’s Drive magazine, Subaru’s electric turbo would operate on heat generated from the exhaust which would be converted into electricity that would power the turbine. Such a design could eliminate most, if not all of the associated piping and drastically reduce turbo lag.

The electric turbo is just one of the many rumors circulating about the next WRX. Expected to bow sometime around 2014, there are whispers that the new WRX will be available as a two-door coupe and have distinct styling that will borrow nothing from the related Impreza. Subaru Australia representative David Rowley spoke to Drive and agreed with the latter rumor, saying that it would “look considerably different.”

The engine for the next WRX is expected to be a 1.6 liter boxer four, just in case you were wondering what that neat electric turbo could show up attached to. Only one question remains, though. How much power will this whiz-bang turbo setup be good for?

At last years L.A. Auto Show, Subaru showed the BRZ STI concept. The car was outfitted with a aero package, larger 18-inch wheels, high-performance tires, a massive rear spoiler, and a carbon fiber roof. It was their way of previewing a faster BRZ. Now, Subaru is planning one.

Auto Express spoke with Subaru global marketing manager Atoshi Atake during the BRZ global launch. Atake said there has been many requests for a more powerful model.

"We have already had many requests from interested customers regarding a faster version. Let me say this - we will certainly satisfy our customers. We are already working on a faster version."

You might think Subaru would use a turbocharger to increase the power in the BRZ. Atake says no because there is no space for an intercooler in the engine bay.

Also out of the cards is supercharging due to how much more fuel it would use.

Instead, Subaru will improve the intake manifold, exhaust, and the engine's variable valve control system.

It’s hard to believe that the oldest car in Subaru’s lineup is the Forester. Introduced back 2008, the Forester now holds the title of oldest Subaru vehicle in production. Subaru though will be rectifying that within the next year or so.

Spy shots of a heavily camouflaged Subaru Forester were released this week showing Subaru is hard at work on the next generation.

We can’t tell much about design, but we can tell what the car is riding on. The new Forester will use the new Impreza’s platform, albeit with a bit more ground clearance. Engines will likely be the new 2.5L FB-series flat-four, possibly with direct-injection and a turbocharged four.

Inside, the Forester lifts the new Impreza’s interior; from the three-dial HVAC setup and the radio or optional Infotainment system sitiing above.

We’ll likely see the new Forester sometime next year as a 2014 model.

If you were thinking about buying a Subaru BRZ, you might want to do it soon. A Subaru dealership tells Car & Driver that the company is planning on bringing only 6,000 BRZs to the states for the 2013 model year.

When asked for comment, Subaru wouldn’t confirm the figure. Previously, Subaru said the business case of the BRZ would be around 5,000 to 7,000 at a $25,000 base price.

Now, if you want to get your hands on a BRZ, Subaru dealerships are taking pre-orders. Deliveries are expected to begin sometime in May.

The next Subaru WRX will be using a smaller engine but have more power. Motor Trend has found out from a Subaru spokesperson the next WRX will use a 2.0L turbo variant of the FA20 engine found in the new BRZ.

Although the new engine is half a liter smaller in displacement than the current WRX’s 2.5-liter 265-horsepower engine, Subaru is targeting a 270 HP rating.

So why a smaller displacement? Part of it is due to fuel economy. The current WRX gets EPA rating of 19 city and 25 highway. Subaru recently announced the new FA20 engine to get 30 mpg highway.

The move also signals a change Subaru announced awhile ago with the Impreza and WRX/STi going their separate ways. The new Impreza 2.0L flat four from the FB family of engines found in the Forester SUV and other models. The engine does not feature the same compact dimensions, 86 mm x 86 mm bore and stroke, or complex D4S port/direct injection technology as the FA20 engine.

Subaru has done a good job of dodging the “how much is the BRZ going to cost” question only saying the price would be “comparable” to a Subaru WRX.

But if Motor Trend is to believed, you can step into the base BRZ Premium for $24,000 which gets you a Torsen limited-slip differential, 17-inch alloy wheels, tilt-telescope leather-wrapped steering wheel, leather shift knob and handbrake, a six-speed manual transmission, aluminum pedal pads, an eight-speaker sound system, and standard Navigation.

If you have extra $3,000 lying around, you can step into a BRZ Limited that adds leather-alcantara upholstery, a rear lip spoiler and foglights, among other things.

We’ll see if these estimates pan out when BRZ arrives in the US next year.

What you're seeing in the image below the header is the 2013 Subaru BRZ and everything shown is pretty much what you should have been expecting all along. Although it has been slightly toned down, there are very few deviations from the BRZ STi concept shown at the LA Auto Show.

In fact, upon close examination nothing much is really all that different from the recently revealed Toyota GT 86, the BRZ's mainstream-badged benefactor. The taillights and headlights have slightly different detailing, the fender vents are enlarged, and the BRZ trades in the GT 86's scowling maw for a faintly Peugeot-esque smile. Like the GT 86, the BRZ's curb weight is 2,662 pounds and the 2.0-liter, 197-hp boxer-four is exactly the same as well, although there are rumors that the BR-Z may eventually get an exclusive, uprated 300-horse version.

It doesn't look like any past Subaru, that's for sure. And considering the fact that this Subaru is rear-wheel drive only, it probably won't drive like any past Subaru either.

When the Subaru XV crossover arrives onto our shores sometime next year, it will come with a different name.

During a presentation at the LA Auto Show this week, Subaru of America's Executive Vice President, Thomas J. Doll confirmed the Impreza-based crossover will be named the Subaru XV Crosstrek, not the Impreza Outback Sport.

Why the name change? Well there could be two reasons. The first is the Impreza is known as the inexpensive compact car in Subaru's lineup. By separating all the different variants of the Impreza (XV Crosstrek, WRX, and STi), they can charge more for them. Secondly, Subaru has seen good sales results from separating the Legacy and Outback lines.

The Subaru XV Crosstrek will make it's way to the US in 2012 as a 2013 model.
