  1. Unfortunately, Pontiac has drifted from any natural mission...the G8 and Solstice are the only models they have of significance, the rest of the line fullfills the current (and future, apparently) mission of providing cheap, sporty FWD rental cars.

It is funny that you say that because lets be serious the Solstice and G8 have no significance in sales and really that is what matters. The G6 is taking off and being as it has been unchanged since it went on the market what 4 years ago. That right there is as good of a reason to stick w/ Epsilon for the next G6 and not switch to Alpha, which surely everyone can admit will have lower sales than an equivalent FWD Epsilon model.

  2. Cadillac sedan/hardtop convertible/wagon

    Pontiac coupe/sedan/cloth top convertible/wagon

    Chevrolet coupe

That's what GMNA's Alpha lineup needs to be... it's a natural, instinctive lineup... nothing forced, everything FITS.[/b]

Some people can be so blinded by loyalty that they can't see what is plainly to many models.

    Try this on for size:

    Caddy: Sedan, Wagon

    Buick: Sedan

    Pontiac: Coupe

    Opel/Saturn: Wagon

  3. Them claiming to be working on the Diesel Technology made me laugh outloud. Here is the truth.

GM Powertrain Europe has global responsibility for small diesel engines

Who said Holden is working on small diesels? They could be considered 'medium' or 'large'.

As big a fan as you are of GME, perhaps you should remember that it is a fiefdom w/in the kingdom of GM. This kind of attitude is what got Ford into the mess it was in before Mullaly came to them.

  4. I doubt Alpha is cost-effective just with Cadillac's volume. They are a long way from matching the 3-series' sales levels. I agree that the Alpha should be a Pontiac rather than a Buick, but the Chinese market demands a Buick to match off against the rwd Toyota Reiz (Mark X/Cressida).

I am surprised nobody else mentioned this.

Who in their right mind would think that a 30K G8 wagon will compete with a 40-50K CTS wagon

I would. Look if I am going out to buy a sports wagon I want RWD, nice interior, good looks w/ good practicality. I don't shop based upon a dollar amount up. I shop a dollar amount down. If I can afford $50k but can get 80% of the looks, features, and practicality for $30k why should I spend the difference?

  5. By show car, I mean there was a car that GM brought around to all the assembly plants and showed the employees what the proposed Beretta (L car), was going to look like. This was either 1884 or 1985. I did not work at GM at that time, but saw pictures of it when I got to Wilmington, which built the Beretta. I was shown these pictures by the current plant manager then. The car I saw from the rear, looked like a baby version of the Camaro, with similar taillights and design cues. It was a much nicer car than what was actually produced after the manufacturing engineers got done with it. Remember, they make most changes to make it easier to build. That's why what you see at a show, is most likely changed when it hits the lot. If I can find the Beretta pic in the GM historical files I will post it.

That wasn't the Feretta was it.

  6. About time too. As much as I hate to say it, the VE is just too damn porky and really needs to lose some weight. Losing the spare will tick off rural customers, but if the run-flats work, then it shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Going to lighter construction materials should be done and the sooner the better. I don't agree with a 4 cylinder Commodore (the 4 cyl VB with the Starfire 4 was a dismal failure and tainted the car's image for years) unless its coupled with a hybrid powertrain.

Direct Injection needs to happen, and Holden needs to hasten its access to fuel efficiencies available to it from the GM empire. However fuel-saving tyres are a no-no, as they usually spoil driving dynamics!

Lets say the Commodore drops 200-300 lbs and uses only the 2.0 DI turbo (260/260) from the Kappa cars. Would that not work well?

  7. If there is a Buick Delta II, it should not share anything with the Cruze if it wants to be considered "premium."

I disagree I think it should share the 1.4 GDI Turbo engine as its base w/ the 2.0 GDI Turbo as the top end engine.

In fact I said the Cruze should have gone to Buick and let the Cobalt continue on for Chevry a while ago. It is just the small premium car that Buick needs in the world of high gas prices and small premium luxury cars.

  8. Lets back up a little here guys: Kappa isn't an under utilized platform. Kappa is an inflexible platform. It can make 2 door, 2 seat coupes and convertibles. With GM hurting for money this is a no brainer. Kappa doesn't make money, doesn't offer good ergonomics, and doesn't offer storage capacity. It was made to streamline the production channel and to show off what Pontiac is. That job is done.

While the current Y-body Corvette is a little larger and more powerful, who is to say that the next one will be. Maybe the Solstice will move to the Y-body. Maybe the Solstice will die, either way I am sure something will replace it.

  9. Honda is already readying a second-generation Fit while the Aveo--the type of car GM should be paying attention to right now--is slapped with a ridiculous face and left to rot on the vine.

Seriously, what are they thinking? Subcompacts are selling like wildfire, and the only option from GM is a warmed-over penalty box that nobody in their right mind would choose over a comparable Fit, Yaris, Versa...anything. It's a rental-queen, just like the Grand Prix, G6, Impala, Lacrosse...the list goes on and on. At least the Beat is coming...oh, wait.

Keep making fun of the Fit guys...it's eating GM's lunch.

The Aveo base price is 2/3 of the base price of the Fit, not really a strong comparison. The Aveo is so incredibly cheap it makes the other subcompacts look downright expensive by comparison. The Fit's pricing is more in line with the old cavalier than the Aveo. While it doesn't quite reach Cobalt/Civc cost it isn't that far of a stretch that I wouldn't make the jump up to the true compact.

  10. Well, according to http://www.gtasourcepage.com/TransAmTimeLine.html, the T/A Convertible was only available with the 5.0L TPI V8 (205 HP with the auto trans) and 663 T/A Convertibles were produced during the '92 model year.

FWIW some individuals would purchase a 5.7 car and send it to ASC to perform the convertible conversion. The 8th digit is an 8 for the 5.7 and a F for the 5.0 TPI motors

A TBI 5.0 could also have been sent off for the conversion but is less likely. Be sure to find out the RPO code of the factory convertibles from some place like thirdgen.org . You don't want to take on someone else's project afterall.

  11. The primary reason is because they were never engineered to make it easy to produce a LHD model. Ford has also decided that their wonderful Australia only 4 litre DOHC inline 6 will be abandoned in favour of a global Ford V6 engine.

Well since it has worse NVH (on the turbo model) and won't meet the upcoming tighter emissions I would say there is a reason it is going away.

  12. I believe I would rather make the short few hour in-state trip and experience it in person. :AH-HA_wink:

But it's a cool video nonetheless.

If you haven't you need to. All KY residents should do this.
