  1. When gas hits $6 a gallon it will sell like hotcakes. Esp. with the devaluation of the $...imports will become more expensive on a relative basis...

    Chris

Well except for the fact that this too will be an import if its made in Korea.

  2. But sales taxes are also regressive, and impact the poor the most.

Well if stuff like food was taxed then i would agree with you. But most "necessities" of life aren't taxed.

besides food is heavily subsidized, so any tax that the poor would pay on food would come no-where near the amount that it is subsidized.

A flat tax with the basic necessities of life excluded is the fairest tax system... BUT... it would deliver very erratic tax revenues which would force governments into conservative spending which would theoretically create large surpluses most years. However that would never happen as California shows quite clearly, and you will just end up with tons of debt.

  3. How do you plan on fairly charging the road tax to Volt drivers who have a 20 mile round trip commute and almost never use gas?

Then the government is effectively promoting fuel efficient vehicles AS IS.

But still, its best to eliminate fuel taxes entirely and get those revenues from sales taxes.

No reason to punish poor people who often cannot afford to live close to work.

  4. I can write in cursive if i go real slow, but meh.

I have a hard time reading the fancy old-person cursive that used to be the norm.

Like i can read James's cursive no problem, but like people who are 80+, that cursive is far to fancy.

  5. Well we are a consumer nation that manufacturing-wise is uncompetitive on a national scale with other nations. What do you expect?

The US of A is destined to be a 3rd world country in the long run the way things are going.

That being said, im not about to go around proclaiming that we banish Wal*Mart from the face of the earth.

Wal*Mart has been responsible for the productivity gains of America for the past decade. They have also been a large reason that consumer goods have not spiraled out of control inflationary wise. I'm not saying these are good or bad in and of themselves, but it is a symptom of an economy that is not stable.

  6. For the record this program WILL hurt auto sales in the upcoming months and years since the people who were considering buying all pretty much did it now, if they do extend it then it will literally make everyone who was considering buying a car buy one in the next few months, leaving years of dismal auto sales.

It may also make things worse if the people who were buying these cars credit was less than stellar.

  7. Anywho regarding the corn stuff, the feds actually require that a lot of daily food products contain corn in some sort of way. Its a load of BS all in the name of "health" and helping the poor farmers (apparently we live in 1900 again).

    It's more than just HFCS.
