Honda Opens State-of-the-Art Wind Tunnel Facility in East Liberty, Ohio
G. David Felt posted an article in Honda
Honda Press Release: The new $124 million Honda Automotive Laboratories of Ohio (HALO) facility, located at the independent Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC) in Central Ohio, is the world's most advanced wind tunnel, with three separate state-of-the art testing functions — aerodynamics, aeroacoustics, and racing — in one location. Honda created the multifunctional HALO facility to reinforce its commitment to developing fuel-efficient and fun-to-drive vehicles. One of the most advanced of its kind anywhere, the wind tunnel uses a unique interchangeable modular ground plane system capable of aerodynamic vehicle testing of production vehicles and race machines. With a five-belt rolling road system designed for production vehicle development and a second single wide-belt system for testing both high-performance sports cars and purpose-built race vehicles, the tunnel can generate wind speeds of more than 190 miles per hour. Even more, the wind tunnel can quickly enable a sophisticated acoustic test system for an aeroacoustic testing mode that utilizes a powerful system of acoustic arrays, made up of microphones and cameras, able to collect real-time data and precision measurement. This becomes even more important as an element of vehicle design as Honda moves toward its electrified future. As Honda continues to move toward its electrified future, noise reduction becomes an even more important element in vehicle design. Absent engine and exhaust sounds, wind noise will be more noticeable inside the cabin of an electric vehicle. Using the acoustic test system, Honda engineers will be able to identify the precise locations of both interior and exterior noise issues more quickly than ever before. "Honda's product development capabilities will advance to new heights thanks to this investment in our Ohio research operations," said Jim Keller, executive vice president of Honda Development & Manufacturing of America, LLC (HDMA), and leader of the company's North American Auto Development Center. "With this new facility, Honda is not simply investing in an advanced technology facility but in the future of the Honda engineers and other researchers who will work here." The new wind tunnel, coupled with the company's advanced safety research center, provides Honda's R&D engineers with two world-class facilities in Ohio; both supporting the design and development of products built in America using domestic and globally sourced parts. This also is an opportunity for Honda engineers to build relationships with other companies interested in aerodynamic and aeroacoustic research, support STEM activities, and sustain the general aerodynamic community's testing needs. Additionally, the wind tunnel's aerodynamic test capabilities will help increase the range and performance of the company's future full-electric vehicles, supporting Honda's efforts to continually advance its current position as America's most fuel efficient and lowest CO2 full-line automaker. The HALO wind tunnel is Honda's latest major investment in Ohio, where the company has been advancing its ability to develop and build products for over 40 years – now totaling $14 billion. Many talk about how quiet BEVs are, many do not realize the noise current auto's make and how much noise is drowned out by the ICE and Exhaust. As the auto industry moves forward, it will be interesting to see how each auto company addresses noises that are currently not noticeable or do not gain owner/passenger attention due to sounds that are currently produced by the engine and exhaust. Dialing in an EV in the wind tunnel will become critical to the success of how these autos are accepted. Honda Opens New World-Class Wind Tunnel in Ohio (hondanews.com) -
Good Read, very interesting and worth it IMHO. Opinion: The 2022 GMC Hummer EV does not tread lightly, but it's an agent of change (greencarreports.com)

Up at Stevens today, always cool to see them hang old gear from way back in the day. Always awesome to be up there early and watch the clouds roll by. Last week I took off the 3 inches or so of Hay that was covering my 400 plus cloves of Garlic. They have started to come up, this is when you do the mid growth fertilizing to get maximum size Garlic. Used Organic Blood Meal Fertilizer which is high in Nitrogen that they crave to grow big. All looking good, starting to get the garden going again too.

Been working some long days to get things done for our upcoming tradeshow, so decided to take the day and go skiing. Amazing seeing this as it was only sold in Japan but is like double the size of a Smart Car, but so tiny still and right hand drive.

Totally agree, was not wanting to take it political either, as I do have admiration for what has been accomplished by all types of airplanes including military. Today's news does take a toll on one and I was only thinking what you stated so well in your post above that by now, in this 21st century we would have thought humans would have learned by now that war is not the answer, but sadly even here in the U.S. we have narcissistic individuals that can only think of control and their own ego over humanity. Thanks for the well worded posting!

I get that war has helped develop commercial level items, but we have also had things that were developed out of Nasa that were not War Time related and those technologies have helped humanity. I still believe we could move humanity forward without having to go to war, but I do understand that some humans are crazy power hungry and war and death mean nothing to them as long as they get the attention and what they aim to achieve.

Tesla is a shell game that I feel is backed by shady money and the public that has been paying crazy prices for their stock will take the brunt of it if they cannot truly get to being profitable as the manipulation of the books while he expands across the world does not support his "We are profitable" social media statements and they have failed to deliver on low cost solutions focusing on high priced only. Totally agree, What Tesla has said in the past and what they are doing does not match. A shell game that could very much implode.

@oldshurst442 @ccap41 I hope you both have a good year, but I cannot stress enough to still be careful. WHY? Easy, this Virus pandemic is far from over. Putin War is causing Covid infections to jump big time in Europe. Spain, Netherlands, Belgium Germany Italy and Sweden have all had large increases in infections and hospitalization over the last month. North America tends to trend behind Europe and as we open up and people stop wearing masks, I expect increases with a fourth wave in late spring/early summer here. Animated Maps - Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center (jhu.edu) COVID-19 Map - Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center (jhu.edu) We sadly are seeing an increase in infections and right now I would not recommend attending any indoor large gather without a face mask. Yes we are slowly getting the world vaccinated, but even then this virus hurts the body in ways that we are not totally understanding yet. Long term Covid symptoms needs to be studied better as we are seeing with the long term covid that some have, comes long term memory loss. Live your life, but please be careful as especially for the unvaccinated, this virus tends to really mess up the body.

Yes a little pug doggie that needs some refresh work. Yes I know you like this rusted look, but I would love to have it like new in a repaint.

Great that it has such good gas mileage, but one still has to wonder about the offset due to the particulate matter and Nitrogen Oxide emission that is produced by diesel at the tailpipe that has been contributed to lung issues. ?

Agree, Stellantis needs to ditch some of the dead weight models that clearly will never be profitable Global Models.

? Maybe a new addition to your Posse?
