  4. Yesterday we reported that Nissan may be cutting up to 10,000 jobs.... we were short by about 2,500. Nissan Motor Company's CEO Hiroto Saikawa said "The results were really more negative than we expected" in a financial briefing at Nissan Headquarters. Operating profit was nearly wiped out, falling to just $14.8 million in the first fiscal quarter ending June 30th. Operating margin shrank from 4.0 percent last year to barely 0.1 percent this year. Global retail volume fell 6.0% to 1.23 million vehicles. On the back of these poor results. Nissan has annouced job cuts of up to 12,500 worldwide as part of a plan to revive the company. Of that, 6,400 job cuts are already underway with 1,420 jobs lost in the U.S. An additional 6,100 job cuts are planned over the next 4 years. Most of the job cuts will be at plants that are working below capacity. In the U.S., Nissan is trying to move away from fleet sales and focus on increasing retail sales, with the goal of boosting retail sales by 100,000 units. View full article

  10. Infiniti had moved to Hong Kong in 2012 in order to better break into the Chinese market, however, Chinese market growth has been slow for the brand over the last seven years. Sales are less than 1/10th what Cadillac sells in China. While the headquarters for the brand resided in Hong Kong, most of the development work on the vehicles themselves remained in Japan. Now, Infiniti is consolidating back to Japan in order to regain efficiencies of working closer to home. Infiniti is working on becoming an EV focused brand by 2021 with every future model featuring some level of electrification or being a pure EV. One other area that will also see consolidation is platforms. Infiniti will use more Nissan platforms in future in order to spread the development costs over more vehicles. The current Hong Kong headquarters employes about 180 people. Most of those will be relocating Yokohama or receive some sort of severance. View full article

  13. The QX50 was billed as the most important product in Infiniti's lineup this decade, however sales have not met expectations. Year to date sales through March for the QX50 were just 3,583 units. This contrasts starkly with the 12,830 units the larger and more expensive QX60 moved in the same time frame. President of Infiniti Christian Meunier blamed the weak sales on a poor launch of the car due to production issues and a mix of product positioned too high in the market. Infiniti is in the process of correcting the error with a new trim level and more options on the lower trim levels. The Infiniti QX50 is assembled at a new plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico run as a join venture between Nissan Motor Company and Daimler. The plant has suffered from quality control issues and other production problems. Infiniti expect sales of the QX50 to turn around during the summer once the supply chain issues are sorted. The EV that comes from the Qs Inspiration's ..er.. inspiration will be manufactured and sold in China in about 3 years. There are no plans yet to export that car to other markets. Infiniti has said that by 2021 all newly launched models will be EVs or "e-Power" hybrids. For the Qs Inspiration, designer Karim Habib had a freer hand in the design as EVs do not have the bulk of the mechanicals the accompany internal combustion engines. Floors can be flat and interior room can be greatly increased. Infiniti will be competing with Tesla, Audi, Polestar, and others in the EV race in China. 20. Infiniti announced today that they will exit the Western European market to concentrate on their growth areas in North America and China. The company stated that regulatory challenges and competition from other premium priced cars were the main factors in its decision. There are 55 Infiniti dealerships in Western Europe. As part of the move, Infiniti is canceling the Q30 sedan and QX30 crossover which is sold in the US. Both vehicles are built in the UK at Nissan's Sunderland plant. Nissan recently announced they will not be building their X-Trail SUV in the UK. Nissan is also rumored to be cutting Leaf and Qashqai production at the Sunderland plant. This follows recent moves by Honda and potentially BMW to end automobile production in the UK in fear of a no-deal Brexit. In January, Infiniti's President Christian Meunier admitted the QX30 was a flop, but said that the model would continue on an all-Infiniti platform. The exit from Europe now puts those plans into question. Infiniti will remain in Eastern Europe, North America, and China and will electrify most of its products by 2021. 23. Christian Meunier, who became the president of Infiniti last week, was very blunt about the QX30 crossover. "(The QX30 is) not a very successful product. We’ll keep selling it for now...but this is not a product that has a future beyond its current life," he said to Motor Authority this week at the Detroit Auto Show. The QX30/Q30 is a result of a partnership between Nissan and Daimler that began back in 2010, with the promise of sharing powertrains and working on various projects. The QX30 and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class was the first product to come out of this alliance back in 2017. But as we have reported, the partnership seems to be faltering. Last July, a report came out that the joint development of a luxury compact car project was halted between the two. That doesn't mean Infiniti is pulling the completely on the QX30. Meunier revealed that a next-generation model is in the cards that will use an "all-Infiniti platform". He also hinted that the next-generation may have variable-compression engine technology - first used in the QX50 crossover. Source: Motor Authority View full article

  25. Making its debut at the 2019 North American International Auto Show today, the INFINITI QX Inspiration mid-sized SUV concept serves as a precursor to the brand's first fully-electric vehicle. As a company with technological and powertrain innovation at its core, electrification is a natural next step for INFINITI, and the QX Inspiration design study previews the brand's plan to launch a range of high-performance electrified vehicles which promise an engaging drive and deliver range confidence. The all-wheel drive QX Inspiration concept signals a new era for INFINITI design enabled by technology, with a form language hinting at the potency and character of electrified powertrains. The new concept sets a direct precedent for the company's first fully electric production car, illustrating how new architectures and technologies are influencing modern INFINITI design. It also draws on the Japanese spatial concept of 'Ma', demonstrating how open spaces between lines create tension and builds anticipation. This Japanese DNA continues into the cabin. The interior of the QX Inspiration concept is hand-crafted using traditional techniques and a choice of materials inspired by a subtle Japanese sensuality. The development of new electrified vehicle platforms enables the creation of spacious, lounge-like interiors influenced by 'omotenashi', the Japanese approach to hospitality. Providing a seamlessly enabling and instinctive experience, the cabin incorporates technologies to create a welcoming environment, while assisting drivers and connecting occupants to the world around them.
