600 Mile, Single Charge, Proterra EV Buses!

All-electric zero-emission that can finally replace all petro powered buses in North America was unveiled at the Annual APTA (American Public Transit Association) meeting in Los Angeles. Proterra which is known to have launched the first fleet of alternative fuel buses has pushed American engineering with over $130 million in private equity funding to produce a true replacement for all diesel / alternative fuel buses. The Catalyst E2 bus series hit the new milestone at the Michelin's Laurens proving grounds. A 600+ mile passenger free track run translates into 350 miles of continuous real world driving according to Proterra's CEO Ryan Popple.

Proterra states that bus fleets said they could fully replace fossil fuel buses if they had buses that could cover routes for a single day up to 350 miles fully loaded with people. Proterra achieved this challenge by using carbon fiber and increasing energy density in the buses battery pack. Proterra battery packs come in choices of 440 KWh to 660 KWh size. The base model bus with a 440 KWh battery pack is what was used to set their new world record for electric distance in a bus. These battery packs are 6x more than the recently announced Tesla S/X P100D. These batteries can handle sustained quick charging plus they can also use the industry standard J1772 CCS plug-in chargers. Check out the video to see Proterra's Quick Charger system. Very cool in terms of being able to quickly charge and be on your way for a bus.

The first 34 buses are scheduled to be delivered to Foothill Transit Authority in Los Angeles County this fall. Reno, Nevada and 11 other cities including Seattle, Washington will follow in 2017 with taking delivery of these pure long distance electric buses. In All the west coast is expected to take delivery in 2017 of 300+ of these buses and even more as Proterra ramps up manufacturing of the buses. 

Safety first was more than just a slogan at Proterra, with this guiding principle, the Catalyst bus was engineered from the beginning as the battery packs are located outside the passenger compartment. The are liquid temperature controlled and incorporated with both active and passive safety features. They are also ruggedized with reinforced enclosures and a safety barrier between the batteries and the passenger compartment. The buses are also build with Mobileye crash avoidance technology and using plenty of impact absorbing carbon fiber materials.

Proterra's main competitor is a Chinese company with production facilities in California like Proterra who has stated they also will deliver 300+ buses by the end of 2017 to various cities in California. BYD buses will only have a range of 160 to 200 miles compared to Proterra's buses with a 350+ real world mile range. California has help fund both Proterra and BYD development, with the requirement that the engineering and production of the buses be done in California. Both companies have complied to make this happen.

Having pointed to the Volkswagen emissions scandal as a reason that cities are no longer wanting diesel buses and are ready to dump their diesel addiction now that VW engineers are being indicted for the software cheating scandal. They also point out that the public is asking for much cleaner transit solutions.

Proterra states that customers want a environmentally friendly bus, that does not smell, has much reduced noise pollution and makes for a more comfortable trip. Their $740,000 buses depending on configuration was a hit at APTA with many transit authorities asking for more information especially on the east coast which has lagged behind moving to cleaner alternative energy buses and runs some of the oldest bus fleets in the country. An example of how quiet these buses are, the Proterra Catalyst is only 57 dB in comparison to normal conversation at 60 dB, Diesel Bus 72 dB, Formula 1 Racecar 115 dB, and a Jet plane taking off at 140 dB.

Per Proterra own web site, efficiency is the goal and with that you have proof in the cost to run an EV bus as follows:

  • Proterra Catalyst - 21.4 MPGe @ average of 19 cents per mile
  • CNG - 3.27 MPG at 74 cents per mile
  • Diesel - 3.86 MPG at 84 cents per mile
  • Hybrid - 4.58 MPG at 63 cents per mile.

Quoting Mass Transit Mag who was at the APTA meeting:

Compelled by a total cost of ownership significantly lower than fossil fuel-based alternatives, transit agencies across the U.S. agree that diesel’s dominance is waning, giving way to the economic and environmental benefits of battery-electric mass transportation:

  • J. Barry Barker, executive director, Transit Authority of River City: “TARC now has largest deployment of Proterra battery-electric buses east of the Mississippi. Providing both environmental benefits and cost savings, these buses are a symbol of Louisville’s sustainability efforts.   • Doran Barnes, executive director at Foothill Transit: “We just surpassed one million miles of revenue service with our battery-electric Proterra fleet, and we’re looking forward to many more miles to come. Since our first EV bus procurement with Proterra in 2010, we knew that zero-emission buses were the future of mass transit. Now, with the new Catalyst E2, this vision is a reality.  We’re excited by the possibilities of an all-electric future.”
  • Jonathan Church, administrator at Worcester Regional Transit Authority (WRTA): “More and more, we’re witnessing our neighbor agencies consider all-electric buses, as they see how well our Proterra buses have weathered some of the ugliest Northeast snow storms. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Proterra as their technology continues to expand within North America.”

These early buses that only got 23 miles per charge and have become popular with inner city routes are now clearly being outclassed by the generation two of the EV Bus. Proterra states their EV buses to date have logged over 2.5 million miles of trouble free use on city streets displacing 540,000 gallons of diesel and 10 million pounds of carbon emissions not released into the planet atmosphere.

Ryan Popple, CEO of Proterra says, "The question is no longer who will be an early adopter of this technology, but rather who will be the last to commit to a future of clean efficient and sustainable mobility." Proterra believes they have broken down the final barrier to widespread market adoption of EV buses. Proterra, leaving Diesel in the past!

      Earlier this year, Smart announced that it would be ending sales of the gas models and switch over to selling electric only models. This announcement has many Smart dealers running for the exit.
      According to Automotive News, dealers had until the end June to make a decision whether to keep selling Smarts or move to a service-only operation. Out of the 85 dealers in the U.S., 58 (about two-thirds) would move to the service-only operation. Smart spokeswoman Donna Boland said these numbers are preliminary.
      Dealers that opt out of selling Smart will transition to service once they sell out of inventory. The 'vast majority' are expected to transition by the end of this year.
      The remaining 27 dealers are in areas with zero-emission vehicle mandates that will give the brand "the highest market penetration potential," Boland said. Such areas include San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles.
      As Automotive News points out, Smart's 27 dealers will make it one of the smallest dealership networks in the U.S. The likes of Lamborghini and Lotus have larger dealer networks at 31 and 41 respectively.

      Leaf 2.0 Spec's Leak Online

      Spy's seem to be getting the upper hand at Nissan or Nissan is deciding to take an aggressive attack on controlling the release of data about the Nissan Leaf 2.0. While the rumors of multiple size of batteries is unconfirmed and no comment from Nissan since earlier this year word of a 340 mile battery pack option would be available, we do have confirmed base starting points for the price at each of the three trim levels.
      Leaf 2.0 will have the following specifications:
      147 HP with 236 pound feet of torque
      Base Battery is 40 kWh
      Base Trim starting price:
      S - $29,990
      SV - $32,490
      SL - $36,200
      Curb Weight 3,433

      You can click review the full details of the Leaf 2.0 here at the Autoblog story. It gives full details about the car and some are rather interesting. Example is that the Chevrolet Bolt has a 10" screen and the Leaf 2.0 is showing a 5" screen. Interior cargo capacity is 30 cubic feet. HP is a bump up from Leaf 1.0 as they go from 107 and 187 to 147 and 236. Yet this is a far cry from the Bolts 200 and 266. Also we now know that the Leaf 2.0 will have a 40kWh base battery compared to 60kWh for the Bolt and the Tesla 3's 50 kWh base battery or 75 kWh battery option. The leaf will have a standard 36 month or 36,000 mile warranty and 60 month or 60,000 mile power train warranty. 
      Leaf 2.0 kicks the Bolt's and Tesla 3's butt is in pricing with a base starting price of $29,990 compared to Bolts $37,495 base price and Tesla 3 $35,000 base price even though you have to wait till end of 2018 to get a base Tesla 3 and these prices are before any federal and or state rebates / credits.

      States Leading Charge to Ban ICE Auto's.

      The last 48 HRS has been very interesting as we have a story that is developing. Washington state in it's battle to reduce climate change is considering following other countries by setting goals to phase out ICE auto's.
      Washington state has stated the following for this:
      We used a record 2.78 billion gallons of gasoline in Washington State in 2015. Every gallon of gasoline releases 20 pounds of carbon dioxide. Cars and trucks account for nearly 45 percent of our region’s carbon footprint. Washington spends more than $6 billion annually on gasoline, most of which goes to out-of-state fossil fuel companies to finance drilling, fracking, pipelines and destructive environmental practices. Driving electric vehicles will save the average Washington family about $1,200 a year in fuel costs. Washington has clean and low-cost hydroelectric power, making electric vehicles a sensible and cost-effective solution. Car and truck exhaust is responsible for 53,000 deaths annually in the United States. Washington State and Olympia should implement the following policies: Adopt a phase-out date of 2030 for the sale of new gasoline and diesel vehicles, consistent with the global trend. Plan for and build the charging infrastructure necessary for mass electric vehicle adoption. Create incentives to spur the sale of electric vehicles including preferential HOV lane access, lower tolls, vehicle registration discounts, and preferred parking. Increase funding for infrastructure for public transportation, bicycling and walking. The governor who has signed off on all climate change legislation is wanting to lead the USA in being the first state to start the process of phasing out ICE auto's as he joined New York and California to abide by the Paris Climate Accord.
      This will create an interesting business climate of how auto dealerships will survive if the auto companies are not building enough EV's for the public to buy. So many questions and not enough answers are brought on by this. 
      While I am all for EV's, I do question this aggressive approach for the state that I live in.

      BP in talks to Electrify Service Stations Globally!

      BP has opened talks with all global automakers to about offering EV charging stations at it's global network of service stations, Chief Executive Bob Dudley told Reuters on Tuesday. The BP CEO says the change by governments in banning ICE auto's and the move to EV's will threaten the traditional ICE service station and they will die if they do not change to support the future needs of customers. BP is looking to take a slice of this growing market early in comparison to their competition. The only other Oil Company to do this is their Rival Royal Dutch Shell who has started their own pilot program in select locations where EV's are already making up a noticeable share of the auto's being driven.
      BP is estimating that a minimum of a 100 million EV's will be on the roads by 2035 up from the 1.2 million globally in 2015. 
      Noticeable is that both Shell and BP have lagged behind in adding solar and wind as renewable energy suppliers to their portfolio as the shift begins away from oil. Both BP and Shell are using venture capital funds to invest in new start ups that can cover the Wind / Solar energy markets as well as EV charging infrastructure.
      BP will be reining in spending to control and make sure they are profitable at a sustained $30-$50 a barrel oil price over the foreseeable future. BP's CEO says he does not see any profitable play in the U.S. Shale industry for them compared to Exxonmobil, Chevron and Shell who are the 3 largest players in that market. BP is one of the largest players in Shale Natural Gas in Argentina as they look to grow their world wide shipping and sales for both CNG and LNG. The CEO also denied reports that they were considering putting up for sale their North Sea Business as that is their heartland.
