  2. TCC Test: 2007 Chrysler Sebring Touring Chrysler hopes the Sebring will build on the momentum of the Chrysler 300 and the Caliber, though the former is beginning to slump in its golden years. The mid-size segment home to the Sebring is a huge one-it's good for 2 million units a year, representing 28 per cent of the passenger car market-and Chrysler has a small to nonexistent image in the segment. All this explains the Sebring's grabber styling and long list of options, but does it mean that Chrysler's now reached the same lofty plateau of its Japanese competitors? 4. Quality From the freezing temperatures of Northern Michigan in winter to the hottest summer temperatures in Mexico and the most volatile driving conditions that could be created in the Chrysler Group’s AeroAcoustic Wind Tunnel, Chrysler Group engineers tested the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring in the most extreme conditions to develop an all-new mid-size sedan that achieves exceptional levels of quality, durability and reliability and can solidly compete with the leaders in the mid-size sedan segment. “The Chrysler Sebring is designed to go toe-to-toe with the perceived best of the segment,” said Stephen Walukas, Vice President – Corporate Quality. “From a design standpoint, one cannot deny that the vehicle draws and entices you. The value and key to true satisfaction come through in those things you may not see — and, fortunately what you won’t see is a mechanic based on the efforts we made to make this one of the most sound vehicles in its class.” Front-wheel-drive Product Team engineers put the all-new Sebring through extreme quality testing during the vehicle’s development process. In fact, before it was even introduced, the all-new Sebring had lapped the entire state of Michigan four times in the extreme weather conditions of all four seasons. Additional customer equivalent trips and miles were accumulated on prototype vehicles over the course of the vehicle development program. Testing included: *Trips to the Western United States at altitudes of -280 feet to 14,100 feet and temperatures as hot as 120 degrees Fahrenheit *Trips to the Eastern United States, through Detroit, State College, Penn., and Hartford, Conn., the Sebring was tested in altitudes of 600 feet to 3,000 feet and in temperatures hotter than 100 degrees Fahrenheit *In Northern Michigan, the Sebring was subjected to extreme cold “real world” testing of temperatures as low as minus 30 degrees Fahrenheit *Additional extreme heat testing was conducting in Mexico in temperatures that surpassed 125 degrees Fahrenheit *Nearly 650 aerodynamic evaluations, as well as many other related tests, were conducted in the Chrysler Group’s $37.5-million state-of–the-art aerodynamic and acoustic test facility CDS The Chrysler Sebring was designed and engineered under the Chrysler Development System (CDS), the comprehensive, coordinated and disciplined product creation process that improves quality and speed-to-market while reducing costs and encouraging practical innovation in new products. Emphasized on CDS are the systems engineering, design and up-front planning to avoid time-consuming and costly trial and error or changes during the latter phases of the product development cycle. With CDS, all product and process planning is completed and fully integrated before production tooling begins. Overall, the entire company has benefited from the intensified focus on quality as Chrysler Group has seen nearly a 45-percent improvement in expense per vehicle (EPUS) from the period just prior to the company’s turnaround (approx. 1998-2001 model year) to the 2006 model year. In external metrics, the Chrysler Group brands continue to make dramatic year-over-year improvements. The 2007 Chrysler Sebring program and its dedicated engineers have made the vehicle another strong statement in the company’s goal of being among the best in quality. Quality Gates is a process that was adopted as part of the best-practice synergies produced by the DaimlerChrysler merger. Prior to the merger, Chrysler utilized the Chrysler Development System to ensure quality from the vehicle’s sketch stage in Design, through concept and prototypes to testing and ultimately to production at the plant. However, the merger allowed the inclusion of the Quality Gates process, a system that requires a 12-step checks-and-balance review of the project at critical stages of development by senior management. “The Quality Gates validates best practices shared as part of the merger — almost like a blending of the best of both worlds,” Walukas said. “The outstanding styling, interior flexibility, and the dedication to the highest quality are additional ways that all the right planets aligned to give us the best of a variety of worlds.”
  5. Safety & Security A safe vehicle is a top priority among mid-size car buyers, and the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring offers class-leading safety, with a combination of standard active and passive safety features not typically found in the mid-size-car segment. The all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring features standard advanced multi-stage front air bags, side-curtain air bags and front-seat-mounted side air bags. For the first time in the mid-size car segment, anti-lock brakes (ABS) are standard on all Chrysler Sebring models. Also a first for Chrysler Group in the mid-size car segment, Electronic Stability Program is available on the 2007 Chrysler Sebring. “Chrysler Sebring owners can feel confident knowing their vehicle is equipped with more than 30 technologies that are designed to keep both the driver and their passengers safe and secure,” said Dennis Krozek, Chief Engineer – Chrysler Sebring. 6. Structural Engineering The all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring features many advanced steel technologies that reduce weight and unwanted noise, while also creating a safe, solid, stiff structure that provides excellent impact performance, a smooth ride and solid handling. Top that with world-class levels of sealants and sound-deadening materials, and the Chrysler Sebring offers an exceptionally quiet ride, void of road, wind and powertrain noise. “Sebring’s exceptional driving experience is improved by the one thing that’s missing — noise,” said Larry Lyons, Vice President – Front-wheel-drive Product Team. “Sebring’s interior is whisper quiet--road, wind and powertrain noise are almost nonexistent.” High-strength Steel Forms a Protective Shell Around Vehicle Occupants By mass, Sebring’s body structure is a combined 30 percent mix of hot-stamped and high-strength steel. Hot-stamped steel A-pillars, B-pillars and roof rail reinforcements reduce upper body weight by 30 lbs., compared with traditional steel. “Sebring has among the highest combined percentages of high-strength and ultra-high-strength, hot-stamped steel among production-volume vehicles on the road today,” said Dennis Krozek, Chief Engineer – Chrysler Sebring. “That higher weight-to-strength ratio of high-strength steel gave us the ability to reduce Sebring’s overall weight, while also developing a safety cage that keeps occupants protected.” In addition to high-strength and hot-stamped steel, Sebring also features dual-phase steel in the rear rails, tunnel reinforcement and sills. Dual-phase steel allows these components to handle greater loads than conventional steels, which helps them manage impact energy more effectively, while still being relatively easy to stamp and control dimensionally. In addition, in the event of a high-speed front impact, the design of the structure and the properties of the steel combine to protect the occupants by absorbing the impact energy in a controlled manner. Dual-phase and high-strength steels are strategically located in the sill construction providing an efficient cross-section-to-weight balance. As many as four layers of metal (including dual-phase and high-strength steel of various shapes and sizes) provide optimum impact energy management. Chrysler Sebring also features very large sills, which make the body structure substantially stiffer than its predecessor in bend and torsion. Sealants, Sound Deadening Materials and Fine-tuning Reduce Noise, Vibration and Harshness The all-new Chrysler Sebring’s use of structural adhesives is world-class. Components joined with new structural adhesives improve stiffness and impact energy management compared with other joining methods such as spot welding and laser welding. Tougher, more elastic adhesives add strength to Sebring’s joints during an impact. Sebring’s stronger joints create a more rigid structure and minimize noise, vibration and harshness in the passenger compartment, giving the Sebring more body stiffness, which contributes to its excellent ride quality, comfort and interior quietness. The Sebring’s overall torsion and bending stiffness give it excellent on-road performance and a solid feel and ride comfort, while allowing the body to remain tight and quiet. Sebring’s new front-wheel-drive architecture and the three-box vehicle design contribute to a torsional (twist) stiffness of 17,925 ft.-lb./degree (32.2 Hz) and a bending stiffness of 66,703 lb./in. (26.3 Hz), which is 1.7 times stiffer in torsion and 1.6 times stiffer in bending than the vehicle it replaces. The Sebring also benefits from extensive application of pumpable and moldable sealers in the upper body to reduce NVH characteristics. Seam sealing is applied both inside and outside the body, instead of just inside of the body. Sebring’s doors are triple sealed to reduce wind noise. A continuous, one-piece channel-type weather strip mounted in a three-piece roll-formed channel in the upper door frames seals both sides of the windows to prevent wind noise and water leaks. Chrysler Group engineers also extensively tuned the new Sebring and added many special treatments to alleviate road, wind and powertrain noise and vehicle shake, including: *All engines include acoustic engine covers to absorb and dampen noise *Powertrain and body mounts are tuned to minimize shake, as well as improve instrument panel stiffness, steering column-to-instrument panel stiffness and instrument-panel-to-body stiffness *The air induction system, accessory drive mounting and exhaust system are tuned to reduce powertrain noise and improve sound quality *The A-pillar and exterior mirrors were aerodynamically developed in the wind tunnel to reduce wind noise *A noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) package isolates the passenger compartment from powertrain inputs and other sources of NVH *Multiple rib-like indentations in the floor pan and applied mastic sound-deadening material reduce boom and add to Sebring’s extremely quiet ride *Expandable Polyurethane Foam (PUR®) injected into cavities in the body structure prevents noise from being transmitted to the passenger compartment. *Every hole and cavity is covered with a plug or patch *Bituminous mastic pads are bonded to the floor pan to dampen vibration and act as a noise barrier *Dampers on the dash and the rear wheel houses consisting of a layer of mastic between two layers of metal are adhesive bonded to flat surfaces that might otherwise resonate
  7. Engineering Chrysler Group’s Front-wheel-drive Product Team engineers started work on the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring with a clear target — to create a vehicle that’s as good as or better than any mid-size competitor in the world. With the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring, they’ve hit their mark, creating an all-new vehicle that delivers expected levels of reliability and durability, world-class powertrain options and a unique combination of safety and innovative technological features, while never compromising on ride and handling. These elements combined create the Chrysler Sebring’s first-class driving experience. “We benchmarked the leaders in the mid-size segment on all things that matter to the customer,” said Larry Lyons, Vice President – Front-wheel-drive Product Team. “The 2007 Chrysler Sebring delivers quality, reliability, a quiet, comfortable ride, 32 miles per gallon, a combination of class-leading safety features and innovative technologies. Our new Sebring is as good as, if not better than, any other mid-size car on the road today.” The front-wheel-drive based 2007 Sebring is built on the Chrysler Group’s new D-segment mid-size-car platform. It features a four-wheel independent front suspension with MacPherson struts and a multi-link rear suspension. Front and rear suspension crossmembers are isolated to the body to create a quiet ride, with less road noise vibration and harshness (NVH) than previous models. 2007 Chrysler Sebring vehicles sold in the United States are available with three engine options designed to meet the needs of the diverse mid-size sedan buyer: a new fuel-efficient 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, a 2.7-liter V-6 with flexible fuel (FFV) engine that can run on E-85 and an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick that provides 0-60 mph performance to rival the best in the mid-size-car class. Exhilarating Performance With Excellent Fuel Efficiency Fuel economy is a high-priority for many buyers in today’s car market, and with best-in-class fuel ecomony in the city of 24 miles per gallon (mpg), as well as 32 miles per gallon on the highway and its solid, quiet performance, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring’s standard four-cylinder 2.4-liter World Engine rivals the best in the mid-size car segment. Sebring’s 2.4-liter World Engine features dual variable valve timing (VVT), intake manifold flow control valves, acoustic cylinder head covers, dual counter-rotating balance shafts and an acoustic oil pan. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, it produces 173 horsepower (129 kW) and 166 lb.-ft. (225 N•m) of torque, providing a 15 percent increase in horsepower (173 hp vs. 150 hp) and an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with the 2.4-liter engine that was available in the previous model. The Sebring’s 2.4-liter World Engine also produces best-in-class horsepower. Sebring’s available 2.7-liter V-6 engine, which produces 189 horsepower (141 kW) and 191 lb.-ft. of torque (259 N•m) and delivers 30 mpg on the highway, provides value- and performance-conscious consumers the power of a V-6 engine with a price that compares with the competitions’ four-cylinder engines. It also provides more low-end torque (at an rpm 850 lower) compared with the 2.7-liter engine it replaces. The Sebring’s 2.7-liter engine with flexible fuel capability has the ability to operate effectively on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E-85. Chrysler Sebring Limited vehicles sold in the United States also are available with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 235 horsepower (175 kW) and 232 lb.-ft. (315 N•m) of torque coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. The combination of the upgraded 3.5L V6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as quiet operation. “The all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring's performance is extremely competitive with the best in its class,” said Lyons. “Based on 0-60 mph acceleration tests, the Sebring Limited's performance, with its new 3.5-liter V-6 engine and six-speed automatic transaxle, rivals the leaders in the mid-size class.” New Six-speed Transaxle Provides Quick Acceleration, Quiet Ride The 2007 Chrysler Sebring is one of the first Chrysler Group vehicles to offer its new six-speed automatic transaxle, which provides quicker standing-start acceleration than a four- or five-speed transaxle because of a numerically higher first gear ratio. A more robust differential with increased torque capacity enhances launch performance by requiring less torque management, electronically limiting the torque that is available during the initial stages of standing-start acceleration. Smaller steps between ratios also make for a smoother, quieter ride, as the engine speed doesn’t change as often with each shift. In addition, more ratio choices, more appropriate ratios for quicker acceleration and a lower overall top gear ratio provide a quiet ride and improved fuel economy at highway speeds. ABS and ESP Keep Sebring’s Wheels on the Road For the first time in the mid-size segment, Chrysler Group is offering standard anti-lock brakes (ABS) on all 2007 Chrysler Sebring models. Sebring’s ABS system helps the driver keep the vehicle under control by preventing wheel lock-up when the driver brakes on slippery surfaces. The 2007 Chrysler Sebring also is the Chrysler Group’s first mid-size sedan to offer Electronic Stability Program (ESP) bundled with Brake Assist and Traction Control. ESP is an option on all Sebring models. ESP helps the Sebring driver maintain stability and does everything within the limits of vehicle traction to keep Sebring on course. ESP also helps maintain forward traction by constantly monitoring wheel speed sensor signals. If there is any indication of slippage, ESP engages, applying the brakes and, if necessary, closing the throttle to maintain traction. Sebring’s ESP system works best in slick driving conditions, including wet, snowy, icy, sandy or gravel roads, as well as on hot, dry pavement where a thin layer of oil can form, causing the surface to be slick. Hydraulic Brake Assist and Traction Control are bundled with ESP and help Sebring drivers keep control of their vehicle. “Studies have shown that in an emergency, the average driver will not apply the brakes hard enough or quick enough to achieve the minimum stopping distance,” said Dennis Krozek, Chief Engineer – Chrysler Sebring. “Sebring’s Brake Assist overcomes this tendency by using the ESP system to instantly apply the maximum available pressure to the brakes.” A pressure sensor in the ESP hydraulic module determines when the driver is making an emergency stop by measuring the rate at which the driver applies the brake. A high rate of pedal pressure application causes the ESP system to apply maximum hydraulic pressure to the brakes and the vehicle stops as quickly as the available traction will allow. Traction Control helps the Sebring maintain traction by applying the brakes and in some cases closing the throttle to minimize wheel spin during acceleration.

Sebring’s interior provides comfortable seating for the driver and as many as four passengers. Drivers sit 2.5 inches higher than they did in the previous Sebring, giving them a command-of-the-road seating position. The interior cabin also is roomier than the previous model. 10. Marketing The 2007 Chrysler Sebring arrives in the market at a perfect time, as gasoline prices continue to fluctuate and U.S. consumer tastes shift to more fuel-efficient vehicles that have interior spaciousness, functionality, flexibility and unique features. With the all-new Sebring, the Chrysler brand is introducing to market another innovative vehicle that solidifies the brand’s standing as a leader in great design, purposeful technology and outstanding value. In addition to exceptional fuel economy of 32 miles per gallon with the 2.4-liter World Engine, the all-new Chrysler Sebring offers many new, high-tech features, such as the MyGIG™ multimedia navigation audio, entertainment and communication system, a heated/cooled cupholder, YES Essentials® stain-resistant seat fabric and a combination of class-leading safety features, all of which are designed to make the lives of Sebring buyers safer and easier. 11. In Depth: 2007 Chrysler Sebring Auburn Hills, Mich., Sep 22, 2006 - Chrysler is creating inspiration in the common car, introducing the 2007 Chrysler Sebring — an all-new mid-size sedan that combines stunning design with interior craftsmanship, high-levels of safety and reliability, exhilarating performance, excellent fuel efficiency of 32 miles per gallon and many class-leading technologies not available in the mid-size segment. And with a starting U.S. MSRP of $18,995 (including a $675 destination charge), the all-new Sebring also comes at a surprisingly affordable price. “The all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring sustains the momentum started by the blockbuster hit Chrysler 300 and continued with the Dodge Caliber,” said George Murphy, Senior Vice President – Global Marketing. “Just as the 300 redefined the large-car segment and signaled the return of the great American car, Chrysler Sebring combines the levels of reliability and durability that mid-size buyers demand with unexpected levels of style, craftsmanship, technology and affordable performance.” The 2007 Chrysler Sebring will be available in U.S. dealerships in the fourth quarter of 2006 and in global volume markets in the first half of 2007. Strikingly Beautiful Design Inspired by the 2003 Chrysler Airflite concept vehicle that was revealed at the Geneva motor show, the all-new Chrysler Sebring’s elegant lines evoke the exterior styling features of the Chrysler vehicle, bringing the Chrysler brand’s expressive design attributes to the mid-size segment. “Sleek and sophisticated, the Chrysler Sebring’s overall surfacing and details reflect the Chrysler brand’s four design attributes: expressive, refined, agile and passionate,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design. “Sebring’s elegant styling provides a clear alternative to European and Japanese competition.” Chrysler Sebring features the distinctive face of the Chrysler brand, with the Chrysler signature grille, a uniquely sculptured hood, large, distinctive quad headlamps and available fog lamps. Sebring has an elegant profile, with a long hood profile, chrome beltline molding and long roofline. High-gloss black appliques on the B-pillars enhance the length of the Sebring’s greenhouse. Sculptured character lines running along the body accentuate Sebring’s athletic stance. The expressive character of the vehicle continues at the rear where Sebring’s wide tail lamps are integrated into both the rear quarters and extend into the deck lid for visual impact. Rear fog lamps mounted in the backup lamps maintain a uniform appearance between domestic and export vehicles. World-class Craftsmanship The elegance found in Sebring’s exterior styling also runs through the vehicle’s interior, which features a modern, clean appearance with intense focus on quality, detail and execution. “Chrysler Sebring’s interior takes a different direction from many of the current mid-size sedans on the road. Its form is inspired by the Chrysler uplifted winged badge motif and incorporates new and fresh decorative elements,” Creed added. Sebring’s finely crafted interior features soft surfaces, mechanical grains and selective gloss levels on the interior surfaces. From the driver’s seat, Sebring’s H-point is 2.54 inches (64.6 mm) higher than the vehicle it replaces, giving drivers a command-of-the-road seating position. Standard 60/40 fold-flat rear seats make room for more gear, and an available fold-flat passenger seat creates a table-like surface that enhances the versatility of Sebring’s interior. All Chrysler Sebring models feature a two-tone interior color theme of dark and lighter shades of Pastel Slate Gray or Pastel Pebble Beige, which provides a spacious and well-appointed look. The Chrysler Sebring Limited model also features an exclusive two-tone Cream and Pebble Beige interior with leather seats. The Chrysler Sebring Limited’s available upscale accent materials and finishes include Tortoise Shell, Satin Silver, Alloy Silver and Chrome. Purposeful Technology That Makes Life Easier and Safer In addition to Chrysler Sebring’s upscale design and elegant use of materials, this all-new sedan brings new levels of function and technology to the U.S. mid-size car segment. “Chrysler Sebring features a slew of new technological features not typically found or expected in a mid-size car,” said David Rooney, Director – Chrysler Marketing and Global Communications. “These features make life easier and safer for the driver and passengers, while making the overall driving experience much more enjoyable for all.” The 2007 Chrysler Sebring features MyGIG™, a cutting-edge information, entertainment and safety navigation audio system that raises the bar on in-vehicle communications (late availability). This best-in-class, next-generation navigation radio features a 6.5-inch Thin Film Transistor (TFT) Display with a touch-screen panel that can support 65,000 colors, providing a three-dimensional appearance to graphics and animation, as well as multiple font sizes and styles. This includes 100 percent commercial-free music, as well as sports, news, talk, entertainment, traffic and weather *UConnect® Hands-free Communication System that uses Bluetooth® technology to provide voice-activated wireless communication between the occupants’ compatible cell phones and the vehicle’s onboard receiver. The hands-free option promotes safety, freedom, value and flexibility. In addition to MyGIG, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring also offers a unique combination of features not available on other mid-size competitors, including: *Heated/cooled front cupholder for keeping cool beverages cool and hot beverages hot. Sebring’s safety cage is constructed with dual-phase, high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel components designed to protect occupants in all driving situations. Sebring’s extremely strong safety cage is complemented with a combination of standard safety items demanded by buyers in the mid-size segment, including: *Advanced multi-stage front air bags *Side-curtain air bags *Front-seat-mounted side air bags *Anti-lock brakes *Electronic Stability Program also is available on the 2007 Chrysler Sebring. Exhilarating Performance With Excellent Fuel Efficiency Three engine options power the 2007 Chrysler Sebring sold in the United States: the new standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder World Engine, an available 2.7-liter V-6 engine and an available 3.5-liter V-6 engine coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle with Auto Stick. Fuel economy is a high-priority for many of today’s car buyers, and the 2007 Chrysler Sebring, with its standard four-cylinder engine rivals the best in the mid-size car segment. Sebring's 2.4-liter World Engine with dual variable valve timing delivers best-in-class fuel efficiency in the city of 24 miles per gallon (mpg), an excellent 32 mpg on the highway, as well as smooth, quiet operation. Mated to a four-speed automatic transaxle, this new engine provides a 15 percent increase in horsepower (173 horsepower vs. 150 horsepower) and an 8 percent improvement in fuel economy compared with the 2.4-liter engine it replaces. An available, Flexible Fuel (FFV) 2.7-liter V-6 engine provides value- and performance-conscious consumers the power of a V-6 engine with a price that compares with the competitions’ four-cylinder engines. Chrysler Sebring's available 2.7-liter V-6 engine produces 189 horsepower and 191 lb.-ft. of torque, providing more low-end torque (at an rpm 850 lower) compared with the 2.7-liter engine it replaces. This 2.7-liter V-6 engine achieves 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. It also can operate effectively on any blend of gasoline and fuel-grade ethanol up to E-85. Chrysler Sebring Limited sedans sold in the United States also are available with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that produces 235 horsepower and 232 lb.-ft. of torque coupled with a new six-speed automatic transaxle that comes standard with Auto Stick. The combination of the upgraded 3.5L V6 engine and six-speed automatic transaxle delivers excellent performance and fuel efficiency, as well as smooth quiet operation. The 2007 Chrysler Sebring is one of the first Chrysler Group vehicles to offer this new six-speed automatic transaxle, which provides quicker standing-start acceleration than a four- or five-speed transaxle because of its numerically higher first gear ratio. For the first time in the mid-size car segment, the Chrysler Group also will offer a state-of-the-art 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine on the Chrysler Sebring for key diesel markets outside North America. The diesel engine will deliver excellent performance and fuel economy, with an estimated 140 horsepower DIN (103 kW) and 229 lb.-ft. (310 Nom) of torque. “The all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring’s performance, fuel economy and overall driving experience is extremely competitive with the best in its class,” said Larry Lyons, Vice President – Front-wheel-drive Product Team. Elevating Expectations In the United States, Chrysler Sebring is designed to appeal to 35-55-year-old buyers who are married and have a median income of approximately $65,000. Fifty-five percent are female, and 60 percent are college educated. Many have small families with one or two children. These mid-size car buyers are down-to-earth and conservative, yet open-minded, self-confident and have a passion for life. Middle and upper-middle class, they lead active lives, and they have a true sense of style. Their self image is grounded in their accomplishments and future prospects. Chrysler Sebring’s elegant and sophisticated design, packaged with interior craftsmanship and essential levels of reliability, meets the needs of these customers who want more than just practicality. Chrysler Sebring Model Lineup The 2007 Chrysler Sebring is available in the United States in three models: Chrysler Sebring, Chrysler Sebring Touring and Chrysler Sebring Limited. 2007 Chrysler Sebring Production Production of the 2007 Chrysler Sebring begins in the third quarter of 2006 at the newly refurbished Sterling Heights (Mich.) The 2.7-liter V-6 engine and the 3.5-liter V-6 engine are built at the Kenosha (Wis.) Engine Plant. Chrysler Brand Driven by award-winning new models, the Chrysler brand has seen a dramatic increase in sales, market share and brand image, culminating in 2005 calendar year sales of 649,293 units – an all-time sales record. Since 1990, Chrysler brand sales have jumped 251 percent. No other American automotive brand has grown as much during the same time frame. “The Chrysler brand's succession of innovative product introductions continues to solidify the brand's standing as the leader in great design, purposeful technology and value,” said David Rooney, Director – Chrysler Marketing and Global Communications. “With the launch of the all-new 2007 Chrysler Sebring and the 2007 Chrysler Aspen — the first-ever full-size SUV for the brand — the momentum is sure to continue,” he added. Global Engine Manufacturing Alliance (GEMA) The World Engine is a family of world-class four-cylinder engines produced by GEMA in Dundee, Mich., delivering an exceptional combination of quality, fuel efficiency, refinement and performance. GEMA is owned equally by DaimlerChrysler Corp., Mitsubishi Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co. 14. Manufacturing The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen will be built at DaimlerChrysler’s Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Del. As a result of a $180 million retooling and body-shop renovation, the plant will now produce two models on one assembly line. In addition to the Chrysler Aspen, the Newark Assembly Plant builds the Dodge Durango. “The Newark Assembly Plant is joining our growing list of flexible manufacturing plants and, by the end of this year, five of our six U.S. truck and activity vehicle assembly plants will produce more than one model,” said Byron Green, Vice President – Truck and Activity Vehicle Manufacturing, Chrysler Group. “With flexible manufacturing, we are better able to meet the demands of Chrysler, Jeep® and Dodge customers.” With the launch of the Chrysler Aspen, Newark joins Chrysler Group’s growing list of flexible assembly plants. Manufacturing flexibility gives the company the ability to better respond to consumer demand for its growing product portfolio. The plant has the ability to vary the production mix between the two vehicles as needed. The rolling launch of the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen was completed in 24 months. In anticipation of the launch, 2,100 employees were trained to operate new high-tech robotic equipment and perform advanced manufacturing processes, resulting in new methods of error-proofing and a new level of manufacturing efficiency. Provides the greatest benefit in critical driving situations such as turns, and is especially valuable when driving on mixed surface conditions such as snow, ice or gravel. If there’s a discernible difference between what the driver asks through the steering wheel and the vehicle’s path, ESP applies selective braking and throttle input and puts the vehicle back onto the driver’s intended path *Energy-absorbing Steering Column — The manual-adjust steering column utilizes two hydroformed coaxial tubes that can move relative to each other to allow the column to move forward for enhanced energy-absorption during an impact *Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS) — Makes it easier for emergency personnel to see and reach occupants in the event of an accident by turning on the interior lighting and unlocking doors after air-bag deployment. Also shuts off the flow of fuel to the engine *Express Up/Down Front Windows — One-touch buttons enable full-travel opening and closing of driver and front passenger windows *Height-adjustable Seat Belts — Allows occupants to raise and lower the shoulder belt. Encourages seat-belt usage by offering a more comfortable fit *HomeLink Universal Home Security System Transceiver — Stores three separate transmitter radio-frequency codes to operate garage-door openers, security gates, security lighting or other radio-controlled devices *Interior Head-impact Protection — Interior pillars above the beltline and instrument panel including areas around windshield and rear window headers, roof and side-rail structures, and shoulder-belt turning loops specifically designed to limit head-impact force *Knee Bolsters — The lower instrument panel and the glove-box door are designed to properly position the occupant, enabling air bags to work effectively *Low-risk Deployment Air Bags — Front-passenger air bags that use unique shape, venting, folding patterns, advanced inflators or a combination of these four technologies to position and inflate the restraint properly for a belted passenger while also meeting federal safety requirements for out-of-position, small occupants and rear-facing infant seats. Occupants are advised to always sit properly in their seat with the seat belt fastened. Children 12 years old and younger should always be seated in the back seat correctly using an infant or child restraint system, or have the seat belt positioned correctly for age and weight *Octagonal Frame-rail Tips — Designed to collapse in a controlled manner during a frontal or offset-front impact, decreasing transfer of energy to occupants *ParkSense® Rear Backup System — Assists at low speeds in Reverse to detect stationary objects. 17. Brand The Chrysler brand continues its succession of innovative new product introductions that solidify its standing as the leader in design, engineering and value. On the heels of the award-winning Chrysler 300, the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen effectively expands the Chrysler brand’s head-turning lineup. “We continue to grow Chrysler’s market share and brand image with stunning designs and inspired engineering — a strategy reflected in the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen,” said George Murphy, Vice President – Global Brand Marketing and Sales, Chrysler Group. “With elegant Chrysler styling, premium technology, numerous standard safety features, unmatched performance and capability, and fuel-saving technology, Chrysler Aspen will be a tremendous value, especially compared to luxury-priced SUVs.” Offering customers a premium full-size SUV, Chrysler Aspen is a value alternative to luxury-priced SUVs including the Lincoln Navigator, GMC Yukon Denali, Cadillac Escalade and Lexus GX470. Inside the Chrysler showroom, the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen will complement the Pacifica and Town & Country, and further establish Chrysler as the best source for a family vehicle. Chrysler Aspen is uniquely positioned as a full-size SUV that will compete in size and price with vehicles in both the full-size and large SUV segments. The full-size SUV segment is currently 2.1 million units, which accounts for approximately 50 percent of all SUV volume. Target demographics for the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen include older families — baby boomers, 40–55 years old — with a median household income of approximately $100,000 per year. Driven by award-winning new models, the Chrysler brand has seen a dramatic increase in sales, market share and brand image, culminating in 2005 calendar year sales of 649,293 units — an all-time Chrysler brand yearly sales record. Since 1990, Chrysler brand sales have jumped 251 percent. No other American automotive brand has grown as much during the same time frame.
  18. Engineering The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen is engineered to deliver a confident, powerful, refined and highly capable driving experience, providing a new level of ride quality in the full-size SUV market. Power is delivered with efficiency, the ride is plush yet controlled, steering is crisp and direct, braking is strong and assured, and the cabin features best-in-class refinement. “We combined a superior suspension configuration with best-in-class power and capability to make the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen a unique offering in the luxury SUV market,” said Mike Donoughe, Vice President – Body-on-frame Product Team, Chrysler Group. “Adding to the formula, Chrysler Group’s fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS) and flexible fuel technology provide Chrysler Aspen owners V-8 power with the fuel efficiency of smaller full-size SUVs.” Best-in-class Power With Fuel-saving Technology The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen provides best-in-class horsepower and torque with the towing and hauling capability of a large SUV and the fuel efficiency of smaller full-size SUVs. “With the most powerful engine in its class — the 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 — the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen delivers unrivaled capability and performance with fuel-saving MDS technology,” said Donoughe. “Impressive off-the-line acceleration combined with enough torque to tow 8,950 lbs., Chrysler Aspen is a premium SUV where beauty is backed with brawn.” The optional 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine — featuring Chrysler Group’s fuel-saving Multi-displacement System (MDS) — delivers best-in-class 335 horsepower and 370 lb.-ft. of torque. Without compromising performance, the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen’s HEMI V-8 engine seamlessly alternates between four-cylinder mode when less power is needed and V-8 mode when more power is in demand. Chrysler Aspen’s standard powertrain is the 235-horsepower 4.7-liter Magnum V-8 engine with 300 lb.-ft. of torque, providing a smooth and responsive performance. Featuring standard E85-compatibility, the 4.7-liter V-8 engine earns the Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) designation that provides customers the option of operating Aspen on ethanol, gasoline or a mixture of the two. Both the 4.7-liter and 5.7-liter V-8 engines are mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. When towing, Chrysler Aspen’s “Tow/Haul” transmission provides crisp shifts and reduces gear searching by holding the lower gear longer. The system will also select a lower gear under downhill conditions in order to utilize the engine’s braking capability. Best-in-class Refinement Providing customers best-in-class refinement — a significant contributor to overall ride comfort — is a result of extensive body-mount tuning and sound-deadening techniques. New air induction systems incorporated with Chrysler Aspen’s two V-8 engines, as well as uniquely tuned resonators, reduce engine sound in the cabin by an average of four decibels across the entire engine speed range. In addition, Pre-loaded Elastomeric Bushings (PLEBs) located on front powertrain mounts isolate engine vibration from the frame. PUR® (expandable polyurethane) foam is injected into 12 different locations on the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen in order to reduce road and wind noise in the cabin. Sealing of body seams, door handles, outside mirrors, windows and doors also significantly reduces wind noise, creating a refined and relaxing interior environment. Chrysler Aspen’s thick laminated windshield, combined with Polymer Constrained Layer (PCL) on the dash panel, provides a high level of sound dampening. In addition, tunnel and hood silencers, and liners in rear cargo bins reduce low-frequency noise from entering the cabin. Solid Foundation The foundation of the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen is a fully-boxed, hydroformed frame that provides robust stiffness and strength. The frame provides a stable platform to base suspension tuning and drivetrain refinement, and provides optimum performance during frontal, offset and rear-impact events. Hydroformed front and rear sections and a roll-formed center rail provide significant stiffness and dimensional control. Chrysler Aspen’s frame is constructed from fully enclosed section rails, where front and rear rails are hydroformed, providing increased strength. Center-rail sections are roll-formed from high-strength steel. A significant safety feature of the Chrysler Aspen frame is the octagonal front rail tips. These octagonal crush tubes feature indentations that initiate the tubes to collapse rearward in a controlled manner during a frontal or offset front impact. Chrysler Aspen offers a Skid Plate Group — consisting of fuel tank and transfer case skid plates and two front tow hooks — with four-wheel-drive models. Optimized Suspension Chrysler Aspen features a smooth, quiet and precise driving experience — benefits of an independent front suspension and Watt linkage rear suspension that is finely tuned to deliver superior ride, handling and towing performance. “The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen provides exceptional handling that sets a new standard for SUVs,” said Donoughe. “From twisting, winding roads to narrow city streets to dirt or snow-covered trails, Chrysler Aspen provides sure-footed grip and responsiveness.” Chrysler Aspen two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive models share a common torsion bar, double wishbone independent front suspension that offers a plush ride, yet provides drivers with handling performance that is well-connected to the road. Aluminum upper control arms reduce unsprung mass for improved suspension response to road inputs, while Chrysler Aspen’s lower control arms are made of cast iron for durability. A link-type stabilizer bar reduces and effectively controls body lean to provide a comfortable and stable ride. In addition, the torsion bar cross member is connected to the frame by elastomeric spool bushings to help isolate Chrysler Aspen’s cabin from road noise. The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen’s link-coil, solid-axle rear suspension utilizes four trailing arms that feature tubular steel construction for strength and durability and a Watt linkage system for precise lateral control. The rear suspension supports a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 6,700 lbs. and towing capacity of 8,950 lbs. Monotube shock absorbers are featured with Chrysler Aspen’s front and rear suspension, providing quick response to road inputs for better ride control and improved handling. Precise Rack-and-pinion Steering System All Chrysler Aspen models feature rack-and-pinion steering, achieving precise on-center feel, steering response and durability. “Chrysler Aspen’s steering system immediately communicates precision, performance and ease of maneuverability to the driver,” said Donoughe. Unique for a full-size SUV, Chrysler Aspen’s steering system provides a precise linear feel, making the vehicle feel smaller than its size. Calibration of steering gear valves, steering geometry and isolator bushing sizes contribute to superior on-center feel. Low-friction bearings in the steering column and small angular offsets along the steering column contribute to accurate steering response and better driver feedback. In addition to dynamic performance, Chrysler Aspen is able to manage a tight 39.9-ft. turning circle, ideal for tight-turning situations. To keep road noise and harshness from reaching the steering wheel, the steering angle and response is fine-tuned, and rubber isolators are incorporated to improve steering feel and precision. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen features standard Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which aids the driver in maintaining vehicle directional stability in severe driving maneuvers on any type of surface. ESP helps the driver maintain stability by applying selective braking and engine control, within the limits of available traction, to maintain the vehicle’s intended course. Chrysler Aspen’s ESP system includes Hydraulic Brake Assist, Traction Control, Brake Lock Differentials and Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM). First-in-class Trailer Sway Control A first-in-class Trailer Sway Control system is standard on the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen. The system monitors the vehicle’s movement relative to the driver’s intended path and senses trailer sway. By applying selective brake pressure and engine control, Trailer Sway Control counteracts the yaw induced by a trailer. The system will continue to apply alternating brake pressure and reduce engine torque until the trailer is under control. Chrysler Aspen’s available Trailer Tow Group features a trailer hitch receiver integrated with the rear bumper beam, heavy-duty engine cooling, auxiliary transmission cooler, power steering cooler, 160-amp alternator, and 750 CCA battery. In addition, a wiring harness includes 7-circuit and 4-circuit connectors. Powerful Brakes The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen’s standard four-wheel-disc brakes with anti-lock braking system (ABS) provide outstanding stopping ability and responsiveness. The brakes’ boosters provide two force multiplication rates, with an initial application that multiplies the actuation force by a factor of seven, and if more deceleration is needed, the multiplication factor increases to 10.5. This gives the driver confidence stopping in traffic situations or when pulling a trailer. Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), a standard feature of the ABS system, effectively balances front-to-rear braking. In addition, EBD minimizes instances of rear-wheel anti-lock action by applying hydraulic pressure to the brakes. Two Four-wheel-drive Systems The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen offers two all-wheel-drive electric-shift transfer cases. A single-speed transfer case is standard with 4x4 models that feature the 4.7-liter V-8 engine. The single-speed transfer case provides all-wheel drive (AWD) and four-wheel-drive “Lock” operating modes. A two-speed transfer case is standard with 4x4 models that feature the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine. Chrysler Aspen’s two-speed transfer case features an all-wheel-drive (AWD) mode and four-wheel-drive “high” and “low” modes. Both transfer cases feature a 48/52 torque split between front and rear axles when AWD mode is selected. Chrysler Aspen’s front and rear axles are both available with 3.55 and 3.92 axle ratios.
  19. Design The all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen design encompasses eye-catching flash, with the refined elegance of a luxury SUV, all at a great value. Modern and premium amenities, combined with superior performance and functionality, merge with expressive Chrysler styling to create the brand’s first SUV. “With a unique and distinctive design, the all-new 2007 Chrysler Aspen brings a new look to the SUV segment,” said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President – Design, Chrysler Group. “Encompassing design cues from Chrysler 300 and Crossfire — including the signature chromed grille and sculpted hood — Chrysler Aspen is an elegant, yet striking premium SUV that is unmistakably Chrysler.” Chrysler Aspen’s chromed grille — the “face” of Chrysler — is signature Chrysler 300, inspired by the memorable V-10 powered Chrysler Chronos concept car that debuted at the North American International Auto Show in 1998.
