Honda Unveils the Production Civic Type R The new Type R continues to be powered by the naturally-aspirated, high-revving 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine but the unit has been significantly reworked to improve responsiveness using a new balancer shaft and drive-by-wire throttle control. VTEC variable valve timing and VTC variable inlet camshaft technology continue to underpin the engine structure. Further development of the Type R unit means more useable torque, as the switch to high-lift, long duration valve timing (the cam change) now takes place at a lower 5,200rpm, and continues all the way to 8,000rpm. So that screaming, high rpm VTEC range is broader and more accessible. Read "Honda Civic Type-R unveiled in Europe" @ Autoblog

In Depth: 2007 Lexus GS September 12, 2006 - Torrance, CA - For 2007, the new Lexus GS 350 enters the market as a more powerful version of 2006's newly introduced third-generation GS 300. It joins the GS 430 in Lexus' mid-luxury sedan offerings. The 2007 GS 350 builds upon its predecessor model's already significant levels of performance, advanced luxury and intuitive technology, and it becomes the most powerful six-cylinder model in its segment. The handling performance of the 2007 GS 430's potent 4.3-liter V8 is further optimized by a newly available active stabilizer system that automatically and seamlessly counteracts body sway to improve cornering performance. "The 2007 GS models epitomize the direction of the Lexus brand, offering more emotional design and remarkably higher performance without compromising the luxurious comfort, attention to detail and quality that continue to rank Lexus as the leader in the luxury category," said Bob Carter, Lexus group vice president and general manager. The 2007 GS 350 replaces the previous 245-horsepower 3.0-liter engine with a new 303-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, which delivers blistering performance with zero-to-60 mph in just 5.7 seconds, as well as exemplary fuel efficiency for the class. The GS 350 is available in rear- and all-wheel-drive models with respective preliminary EPA-estimated fuel mileage ratings of 21/29 and 20/27 city/highway; the V8 GS 430 continues as a rear-wheel drive model, carrying an EPA-estimated rating of 18/25 mpg. Aluminum alloy 18-inch wheels are standard on the GS 430 and newly available for the rear-wheel-drive GS 350. All GS models offer the new Generation 5 Lexus DVD Navigation System for 2007, which features Bluetooth® compatibility, voice activation and a rear back-up camera. In addition, the Lexus Link® telematics system is now available for 2007 GS models. 303-Horsepower V6 Is a Power Leader Optimized for low internal friction, the GS 350’s 3.5-liter V6 engine produces 303 horsepower at 6,400 RPM and 274 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,800 rpm. A new direct fuel-injection system provides much finer fuel-mixture control to improve both power and fuel efficiency. Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) acts on both intake and exhaust valves to further enhance performance through a wide rpm range. The GS 430’s 4.3-liter double overhead-cam V8 engine produces 290 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 319 lb.-ft. of torque at 3,400 rpm. Continuously Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) ensures excellent low- and mid-range power for easy highway merging. Both GS models achieve the EPA’s Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification. All 2007 GS models maximize performance with a six-speed automatic transmission that features a sequential manual-shift mode. All-Wheel Drive for All-Weather Performance The 2007 GS 350’s available all-wheel-drive system helps to enhance handling in diverse driving conditions. A planetary-gear center differential and a wet-type multi-disc clutch control front-to-rear power distribution. The system normally sends 70 percent of available power to the rear wheels to provide the traditional performance advantages of a rear-drive car, but will vary the torque-split ratio from 30:70 to 50:50 in response to driving conditions and driver input. The AWD system’s electronic-control strategy takes inputs such as steering and throttle angle from driver activity combined with vehicle signals from wheel speed and yaw rate sensors. Ultra-Advanced Dynamic Handling Control The Lexus GS combines the best-proven design chassis systems with new dynamic handling technology. The double-wishbone front suspension and multilink rear suspension systems feature with geometry optimized to virtually eliminate unwanted wheel-angle changes during suspension movement. The result is a natural, confident feel that’s also spirited. An Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system, standard on and exclusive to the GS 430, provides four settings, including "sport," for tighter, more precise control. AVS can automatically select appropriate suspension damping for driving conditions. New for 2007, the GS 430 offers the advanced Active Stabilizer system that reduces body sway and enhances vehicle control during cornering. This new system uses electric actuators, rather than slower hydraulic units commonly found in similar systems. An Electronic Control Unit (ECU) calculates the force needed to counter excess body sway, which is then applied to the stabilizer bars by the front and rear actuators. The Active Stabilizer system responds within 20 milliseconds, compared to 100 milliseconds for a competitor. The Lexus system consumes no power under normal operating conditions, whereas the competitor’s system consumes over 240 watts. The GS 430 provides the performance enhancements and advanced vehicle control of the Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system. VDIM integrates and manages a host of handling technologies more quickly than previous dynamic handling technologies could. Combining input from a variety of sensors, VDIM is designed to anticipate the onset of a vehicle skid or slide and then help correct the situation with a combination of braking, throttle, and steering control in a way that is essentially transparent to the driver. VDIM integration helps to provide precise management for the Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB), Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), Electric Power Steering (EPS), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), and engine torque (via the electronically controlled throttle). New for 2007, the GS also allows the driver to disengage the stability and traction control via the Trac Off switch. Electric Power Steering Electric Power Steering (EPS) in the GS 430 provides precise electric power assist using a DC motor built into the steering gear housing, rather than hydraulic assist. Eliminating the hydraulic steering pump reduces engine drag, and the simplified steering system is lighter and more compact, as well. Also in the GS 430, Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) can vary the steering from 2.7 turns lock-to-lock for low-speed maneuverability to a slower 3.2 turns lock-to-lock for highway-speed stability. VGRS also provides differential steering control, which helps correct for a delay in steering response, something that occurs in all vehicles, to help enhance driving feel in lane changes and other transitional maneuvers. Intelligent and Powerful Brakes Enhanced braking performance in both GS sedans begins with mechanical components that significantly increase brake friction and improve stopping power, while effectively eliminating brake fade. Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) help form a powerful safety front. EBD optimizes brake pressure at each wheel to help minimize body dive or sway during hard braking and cornering. Brake Assist is designed to determine if the driver is attempting emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped firmly enough on the brake pedal to activate the ABS, it will apply maximum braking force until pedal pressure is released. The GS 430’s Electronically Controlled Brakes (ECB) is a brake-by-wire system. ECB translates brake pedal pressure into electric signals that, via computer control, help provide precise and optimized braking in virtually any traction condition. Electronic control provides quick brake response when needed, helping the GS 430’s VDIM system to anticipate and help correct skids before they occur. The ECB system is backed by conventional hydraulic brake control in the unlikely event of electronic failure. Lexus designers strive to keep controls simple and intuitive, avoiding needless complexity. A secure and distraction-free setting enables the driver to best appreciate the GS’ enhanced performance. The SmartAccess keyless entry and push-to-start ignition allow the driver to keep the access fob in a pocket or purse. Audio and climate-control systems are easy to understand and operate, and the GS locates controls that are used less frequently behind a dash panel on the left side of the steering wheel. The gauge cluster features machined aluminum facings for a classic look. Highlighting the sporty nature of the GS and emphasizing a closer driver-and-machine connection, the quick-response tachometer moves more directly in concert with changes in engine rpm. The unique instrument panel lighting system relies on variable-transparency glass to minimize reflections from the gauge faces and to help optimize visibility in all lighting conditions. A comprehensive interior lighting system provides just the right amount of light where the driver and passengers need it. All four windows offer one-touch up-and-down operation with jam protection. Both electrochromic auto-dimming side mirrors are power-retractable and feature automatic tilt-down when reverse gear is selected to aid in parking. A power trunk closer provides a finishing touch on this extremely well-equipped car. Advanced Safety Systems Both GS models implement a variety of advanced safety systems. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) includes variable-force front airbags for both driver and front passenger. Sensors determine the severity of an impact and in turn the airbag deployment force, helping to provide an appropriate level of occupant restraint. The GS features standard seat-mounted side airbags for the front seats, knee airbags for the driver and front passenger, and front and rear side-curtain airbags. The optional Pre-Collision System (PCS) in the Lexus GS models can help reduce collision damage. A millimeter-wave radar sensor helps detect obstacles in front of the car, while vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw-rate inputs help to determine whether a collision is unavoidable. In such a situation, PCS switches the Adaptive Variable Suspension to sport mode for optimal chassis response, preemptively retracts front seat belts, and preinitializes Brake Assist so that increased braking will be applied the instant the driver depresses the pedal. The active braking feature will automatically apply the brakes up to a deceleration rate of 0.3 G’s if the driver fails to react to system warnings. Technology for Safer and Easier Driving Both ’07 GS models provide multiple systems to help improve driver safety and improve the overall behind-the-wheel experience. The Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), standard on the GS 430 and optional for the GS 350, helps illuminate a curve as the driver steers into it. A Tire Pressure Monitoring system can detect a critical loss in pressure in one or more tires and alert the driver. The available Intuitive Park Assist (IPA) system uses ultrasonic sensors to detect objects close to the car’s front and rear bumpers and alert the driver accordingly. This updated version of the system first used in the LX 470 SUV and the previous-generation Lexus LS flagship sedan offers additional function by adding a steering-input sensor to better judge changes in distance to objects. The rear back-up camera, available in conjunction with the optional navigation system, automatically projects an image of what its lens can detect behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen when the vehicle is in reverse gear. Indulgent Luxury, Passionate Design The next-generation GS performance sedans ushered in a new more passionate design direction for the brand. From an architectural standpoint, the new Lexus design language, dubbed L-finesse, is more sculptural and dynamic and eschews gimmickry for intriguing simplicity. A 112.2-inch wheelbase, long hood, pulled-back cabin and short rear deck create a confident, powerful stance for the GS while a sloped, vertical grille surrounded by four independent headlamps visually connects the newer models with the previous generation while at the same time lending a distinct look that signals the brand’s design progression. The boldly styled lower valance features integrated foglamps, and a low 0.27 coefficient of drag (Cd) helps to minimize wind noise. L-finesse extends to the interior as well with a passenger compartment designed to impart a unique spatial feeling that creates an intuitive and naturally comfortable environment. The end result is a cabin that is intimate without feeling confining. Ultra-premium wood, polished-metal accents and leather trim endow the GS interior with a lavish yet high-precision feel, with touchpoints that convey quality and controls that respond fluidly. The GS customer can choose from among three interior leather color combinations: Ash with Black Bird’s-eye maple wood trim; Cashmere with Brown Bird’s-eye maple wood trim, or Black with walnut wood trim. Each combination includes a matching wood and leather-trim steering wheel and shift knob. The next-generation GS sedans continue the Lexus tradition of providing luxury that envelopes the occupants without introducing unnecessary distractions. The standard Regency leather-trimmed, heated, 10-way power front seats (perforated leather on GS 430) are supportive and comfortably contoured for long-trip support. Fan ventilation for the seats is optional. A power-tilt and telescopic steering wheel helps ensure a comfortable driving position. The standard dual-zone climate-control system filters and deodorizes the air, and a standard rear power sunshade adds to passenger comfort on warm days. Premium Audio Choices Lexus long ago established an elevated standard for mobile audio systems, and the next-generation GS models uphold this tenet with a standard system that features an AM/FM/cassette stereo and a 6-disc in-dash CD changer. The system plays through 10 premium speakers while an Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL) maintains consistent sound levels at varying vehicle speeds. Within the ultra-quite Lexus GS interior, all styles of music come to life with the 7.1-channel optional Mark Levinson® audio system. Featuring 11 channels of amplification with a total of 330 watts playing through 14 speakers, the system allows users to play both CDs and DVDs. DVD movies can be viewed on the color seven-inch touch screen when the vehicle is in park. Fifth-Generation Navigation System All 2007 GS models offer the optional generation five Lexus DVD Navigation System. This revamped system includes voice-recognition that allows the driver to enter a destination by voice command. Visual support is greatly enhanced with a central screen featuring a high-resolution 800 x 480 pixel display in 32,000 colors. On-screen details are crisp and clean, and maps and roads include 3-D shadow effects. Spanish is added to the already available English and French text display options with the user able to select the language preference at system start-up. The DVD map database contains more than five million Points of Interest (POI). GM Prepares North Florida to Go Yellow TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – General Motors today announced that it has facilitated plans for the launch of E85 ethanol fueling sites in the greater Tallahassee area thanks to a collaborative partnership with Inland Food Stores and the State of Florida. GM has been the catalyst behind several similar partnerships across the country as part of a broader, national campaign to boost the use and awareness of ethanol-based E85 fuel in the United States. The announcement was made today at the Inland Food Store at 3500 North Monroe, the first location to publicly offer E85 ethanol in Florida, at an event presided over by Florida Governor Jeb Bush. “Securing a diverse and reliable supply of energy will reduce Florida's dependence on imported oil and ensure that a balanced mix of fuel sources and technologies are available for years to come," said Governor Bush. "The tremendous potential of ethanol to become a major source of transportation fuel for Florida 's energy future will be spurred with greater public access to ethanol fueling stations." Commenting on today’s announcement, Florida Agriculture and Consumer Services Commissioner Charles Bronson added, “We congratulate General Motors and Inland Food Stores in the formation of this partnership to bring renewable biofuel to consumers at more retail locations. We’re pleased that the efforts of today’s partnership will help provide more Florida consumers with domestically grown and produced fuel choices like E85.” Under the partnership, Southwest Georgia Oil Co., Inc. will identify 16 additional fueling stations—under the names Inland Fuel and SunStop convenience stores—in Tallahassee and the surrounding area where E85 ethanol will begin to roll out between now and the beginning of 2007. “Inland is proud to offer the first retail E85 dispensers in the State of Florida,” said Mike Harrell, President and CEO, Inland Food Stores. “We are committed to making alternative fuel choices like E85 easily available to the public and we are excited to be teaming up with Gov. Bush, General Motors, and our supply partners to promote E85’s availability and to increase consumer awareness. We also wish to acknowledge the help of the National Ethanol Vehicle Coalition in our endeavor.” General Motors will continue to spend significant advertising and promotion dollars to help generate awareness of E85 flexible fuel vehicles—and where consumers can purchase E85 ethanol—with consumer marketing initiatives and dealer outreach. “GM already has more than two million vehicles on the road today that are capable of using E85 ethanol fuel,” said Elizabeth Lowery, GM vice president of environment and energy. “We appreciate that Inland Food Stores is joining our efforts to make this great fuel alternative available to people in Florida. We also appreciate the support of Gov. Bush and the State of Florida as we continue to promote the use of E85 ethanol and its many benefits for the environment, the economy and consumers.” The effort is similar to announcements GM has already made with other state government, oil industry, ethanol producers, and retail partners in California, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Dakota and Texas. Since May 2005, GM has announced partnerships with states and fuel providers around the country to locate, to date, up to 170 new E85 ethanol fueling locations by the end of 2006. “I applaud GM's efforts to provide consumers with greater access to E85,” added Bill Wehrum, Acting Assistant Administrator, Office of Air and Radiation U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. “E85 improves our environment, strengthens U.S. energy security and helps to support American farmers. I am pleased that more and more drivers will be able to choose this important alternative fuel.” Also commenting on today’s announcement, Ed Wall, manager for the Freedom CAR program, Department of Energy said, "The Department of Energy congratulates General Motors, Inland Food Stores and Governor Bush in the formation of this partnership to bring renewable biofuel to consumers at more retail locations. The expansion of the Florida E85 network is particularly significant, as Florida is one of the top three states in registrations of flexible fuel vehicles. DOE is dedicated to developing energy efficient and environmentally friendly vehicles and fuels to meet the needs of all Americans. The efforts of today's partnership will help our nation to wean itself from its addiction to oil by providing consumers with domestically grown and produced fuel choices like E85." E85 flexible fuel vehicles can run on any combination of gasoline and/or E85 ethanol, a fuel blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. E85 ethanol can contribute to energy independence because it diversifies the source of transportation fuels beyond petroleum, and it provides positive environmental benefits in the form of reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Today, ethanol is primarily made from corn, but can also be produced by a variety of other materials. At the beginning of 2006, GM launched a major national advertising campaign, “Live Green, Go Yellow” to build consumer awareness around the benefits of E85 ethanol and GM’s E85 flex fuel vehicles. In addition to the general public, GM will help make it easier for consumers to locate E85 fueling stations by using its OnStar technology to provide directions to the nearest station when needed. GM is a leader in flexible-fuel vehicle production and sales. For the 2006 model year, GM offers nine E85 flexible fuel vehicles, including the Chevrolet Tahoe, GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Suburban, GMC Yukon XL, Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Impala, and the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. For the 2007 model year, GM will offer additional vehicles for a total of 17 E85 FlexFuel models. In addition to the ’06 models, GM will offer the Chevrolet Uplander, Chevrolet Express, Chevrolet Silverado, Saturn Relay, GMC Savana, GMC Sierra, Buick Terrazza, Pontiac Montana SV6 (in Canada). At the same time, worldwide production of ethanol is increasing every year, and is expected to triple by 2020. About GM: General Motors Corp. Tradition: seven generations of the Mercedes-Benz Coupé The new CL-Class ushers in the seventh generation of the large Mercedes Coupés. The two-door model replaces the world-beating outgoing model, which joins the ranks of the best-selling luxury coupés with around 46,800 units sold. The history of the large Mercedes Coupés stretches back to 1952 when Mercedes Benz launched the legendary 300 S Coupé - a “car for the world's elite” was the verdict of the motoring press in its day. In 1956 it was followed by the 220 S Coupé as part of the W 180 model series, which fired the public’s imagination with its unitised “Pontoon” body in particular. And in 1961 the220 SEb Coupé (W 111 model series) took up the baton with its stylish elongated body. In 1981 the SEC Coupés from the C 126 model series were based on the then S Class and remained in the Mercedes-Benz line-up for 10 years with over 74,000 units produced. In 1992 the Geneva Motor Show was host to the launch of the successor model (C 140 model series), powered for the first time by a 290 kW/394 hp twelve-cylinder engine. The predecessor to the new CL-Class Coupé celebrated its world premiere in March 1999, setting new standards with leading edge Mercedes innovations such as the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system and bi-xenon headlamps. Active Body Control: superb combination of dynamism and comfort The standard specification in the new Mercedes Coupé features technological innovations that no other manufacturer can match anywhere in the world. First and foremost is the Active Body Control (ABC) suspension system, which in its latest, even more sophisticated guise delivers unprecedented handling dynamics while offering an equally appreciable improvement in ride comfort. Based on sensor signals and using specially designed hydraulic cylinders at the axles, ABC all but entirely eliminates the customary pitch and roll of the body that occur when moving off, cornering and braking. ABC responds with split-second speed to ensure the body damping is adjusted instantly to any situation. At speeds above 60 km/h, ABC lowers the body by up to ten millimetres in the "Sport" programme to reduce drag and improve handling stability. Another special feature of Active Body Control is its variable distribution of body roll between the front and rear axles according to vehicle speed, which combines agile handling with outstanding stability. Intelligent Light System: five lighting functions to match driving and weather conditions The Intelligent Light System, which makes driving even safer in the dark, is equally unique. Together with bi-xenon headlamps it forms part of the standard specification for the new CL-Class and provides five different lighting functions that are activated to match driving and weather conditions: the new country road mode illuminates the driver’s-side edge of the road more widely and brightly than the existing low-beam headlamps. Motorway mode, which comes on automatically when driving above 90 km/h, delivers a uniform cone of light that illuminates the entire road width. In the centre of this cone the driver is able to see around 50 metres further. The enhanced fog lamps are also new, which Mercedes-Benz uses to provide better orientation in adverse weather conditions. The active light function and cornering light function are also part of the standard-fit Intelligent Light System on the CL-Class. PRE-SAFE®: automatic partial braking before an impending accident Mercedes-Benz is the world's first car brand to develop an anticipatory occupant protection system that recognises a potential accident situation in its early stages and initiates appropriate occupant protection measures: PRE-SAFE® is standard in the new CL-Class. During emergency braking or when skidding is imminent, the system moves the passenger seat into a more favourable position so that seat belts and airbags have maximum effect on impact. It also inflates air cushions in the dynamic multicontour seats (standard in the CL 600), which envelop and support the driver and front passenger. PRE-SAFE® also closes the side windows and the sunroof in critical situations where high lateral dynamics are generated. Mercedes-Benz has just made this multi-award-winning anticipatory protection system even better in the CL-Class with the newly developed PRE-SAFE® Brake system. This operates in tandem with Brake Assist PLUS (BAS PLUS), which warns the driver of an imminent rear-end collision via visual and audible signals and automatically calculates the required braking pressure to prevent an accident. This braking-power support is available as soon as the brake pedal is operated. If the driver does not react to the BAS PLUS warnings, the PRE-SAFE® Brake system triggers automatic partial braking where an accident is imminent and slows the CL Class down using around 40 percent of the total braking power. The automatic partial braking provides the driver with another clear warning to act. If the driver then immediately applies the brakes, the maximum braking force is available and the accident can - depending on the situation - be averted at the last moment. If an accident is unavoidable, the PRE-SAFE® Brake system reduces the impact severity and, in turn, the risk of injury to the vehicle occupants. As with Brake Assist PLUS, the new PRE-SAFE® Brake system also utilises state-of-the-art radar technology to scan the situation in front of the car and detect a potential accident. Two short-range radar sensors with a range of 30 metres and a scanning angle of 80° are located behind the front bumper fascia on the CL-Class. The additional long-range radar in the radiator grille has a range of 150 metres. Mercedes-Benz also offers BAS PLUS and the PRE-SAFE® Brake system in conjunction with the optional DISTRONIC PLUS proximity cruise control. Driver-support systems: radar sensors make parking child’s play The newly developed parking guidance system (optional extra, available from December 2006) also works on the basis of radar technology: the sensors measure the length of a parking space when driving past and show on the cockpit display whether there is sufficient space to park. Once reverse gear is engaged, the display includes a symbolic representation of the parking manoeuvre; guide lines show the required steering angle and indicate the path into the parking space. Night view assist with infrared headlamps, a reversing camera, voice control for car radio, a DVD changer and navigation as well as a tyre pressure monitoring system are other optional Mercedes assistance systems for increased handling safety and comfort. Engines: eight and twelve-cylinder powerplants with noticeably more power The new luxury Coupé is ready for any challenge on motorways and rural roads thanks to the most powerful Mercedes engines to date. The eight-cylinder powerplant in the CL 500 delivers 285 kW/388 hp and generates a maximum torque of 530 Newton metres from 2800 rpm. As such the newly developed engine outperforms the existing V8 unit by 26 percent in terms of output and 15 percent when it comes to torque. Equipped with four-valve technology, variably adjustable shifting camshafts, a two-stage intake module and tumble flaps in the intake ducts, the new V8 is among the most advanced and powerful engines in its displacement class. The CL 500 accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds (previous model: 6.3 seconds). An ultra-modern biturbo twelve-cylinder engine under the bonnet of the new CL 600 generates its impressive power. Mercedes engineers have enhanced numerous details of the power unit and, compared to the predecessor model, have increased output by 12 kW/17 hp to 380 kW/517 hp. The maximum torque, already on tap from 1900 rpm, has been improved further by 30 Newton metres to 830 Newton metres and remains constant up to 3500 rpm. The new CL 600 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds (previous model: 4.8 seconds). And despite the significant performance boost the V12 engine consumes 0.4 litres less fuel than the previous CL 600 per 100 kilometres. Mercedes-Benz has combined the standard-fit automatic transmission with the new DIRECT SELECT gearshift: the driver can select the transmission settings “P”, “N”, “R” and “D” by nudging a lever on the steering column. Operating commands are transmitted electronically by wire.

They set standards in design and equipment, combining outstanding safety with the greatest comfort and a superior driving experience. In short, Mercedes Coupés are dream cars of a very special kind – automotive classics. The new CL-Class is yet another masterpiece by Mercedes-Benz. Just as this luxury coupé points the way into the future with its innovative technology, its design is a protagonist for a new aesthetic appearance – a new Mercedes style. This is characterised by an interplay between taut, striking lines and large, tranquil surfaces. This design idiom lends the Coupé a very special presence, underlining the unruffled calm and strength of its unique character. Familiar Mercedes characteristics are reinterpreted and incorporated into the design concept to form a harmonious composition of tradition and modernity. Examples are the typical Mercedes radiator grille with its wide chrome louvres and the design of the C-pillar. This unique, slightly downwards-tapering pillar configuration is a typical feature of the large coupés whose roots go right back to the 1950s: in 1956 the Model 220 S/SE Coupé (model series W 180/W 128) first captured attention with such a C-pillar design, and a few years later it was further perfected in the succeeding model, the 220 SE Coupé (W 111/112). Other design features which were already acclaimed at that time have also been reinterpreted in the new CL-Class, keeping alive the great coupé tradition of the Mercedes-Benz brand: for example the fully retractable side windows, whose continuous aperture is not interrupted by a B-pillar, and the large, curving panoramic rear windscreen. In the early years this was a typical styling feature of Mercedes Coupés, and in its stylistically evolved form it is just as appealing as in the 220 SE Coupé of 1961. Interior: appointments for even the most discerning The same elegance is found in the interior: the large window aperture draws the eye to the stylish dashboard, exquisite wood trim and soft leather upholstery. It is immediately apparent that everything in the interior is designed for comfort and relaxation. The atmosphere is reminiscent of an exclusive club: take a seat and enjoy. There is a choice of five stylish colour combinations, while automatic climate control, COMAND with a car radio and CD/DVD player and a glass sliding sunroof are other standard equipment items which contribute to the uniquely comfortable driving experience. In the top-of-the-line model CL 600, an interior in PASSION leather, specially selected poplar wood trim and an Alcantara roof liner with quilted seams contribute to a luxurious, first-class atmosphere which is also echoed by designo seats, chromed door sill panels and deep-pile floor mats with leather edging. The standard specification also includes dynamic multicontour seats with massage function and seat ventilation, the hard-disc navigation system COMAND APS, the LOGIC7® surround sound system with DVD changer and the KEYLESS-GO access and drive authorisation system. Compared with the outgoing model, the new Mercedes-Benz top-of-the-range coupé has grown slightly in every dimension. 5065 millimetres long, 1871 millimetres wide and 1418 millimetres high, the body is 75 millimetres longer, 14 millimetres wider and 20 millimetres higher than before, providing even more comfort and space on all four seats. The boot capacity has been increased by 40 litres to 490 litres (VDA measuring method). Control system: fewer switches for more functions A newly developed control system, which has already been successfully imple-mented in the S Class worldwide, refines driver-vehicle interaction even further. Its main advantage is that it provides convenient, rapid access to frequently used functions such as the radio, DVD player, car phone or navigation system. Depending on the driver's own preference, these systems can be controlled using switches in the centre console, pressing a button on the multifunction steering wheel or using the COMAND controller on the centre console. This central con-trol element is linked to the large, pivoting COMAND colour display next to the instrument cluster, providing access to the user-friendly main and sub-menus that activate the various functions. The standard automatic climate control with four independently adjustable temperature zones is also integrated into the new control system. The driver and front passenger can select temperature, air distribution and other settings either using the COMAND controller and menu-based control, or by means of an attractively styled switch array beneath the air vents. The COMAND system allows other individual climate settings to be adjusted, such as air distribution and the footwell temperature. The newly developed integral seats in the CL-Class provide maximum individual seating comfort. “Integral” means that all components of the seat belt system are incorporated directly into the seat; hence the seats form an important component in the occupant protection system. The standard specification already provides electric adjustment of the longitudinal setting, inclination of the seat and backrest, seat height, head restraint and length of the front seat cushions. Pneumatic lumbar supports allow the driver and front passenger to adjust the backrest contour to suit their build and consequently reduce the strain on the back muscles. Optional extras include luxury seats with active ventilation (standard in the CL 600) that provide even more individual comfort, along with the further enhanced multicontour seats with nine air cushions, and dynamic multicontour seats with massage function (standard in the CL 600). The driver and front passenger seats with multicontour function have been awarded the AGR (“healthy back campaign”) seal of approval.

Spied: 2008 Opel Astra The most important part about the mid-life facelift of the Opel Astra is not the re-designed chrome bar flanking the logo. It’s also not the slightly modified air-intakes below the headlights. And it’s not the wanna-be single-frame grille or the shining stripes, and neither the re-shaped black spoiler underneath the front bumper. The most important part is actually not at all to be found at the front of the car! Read "SPY PHOTOS: Opel Astra Facelift" @ World Car Fans

Spied: 2007/2008 BMW 335i The 2008 335i: Faster...but uglier. BMW has given the 3-Series sedan the coupe's 3.0-liter I-6 twin turbo engine but I kind of wish they would have decided to let the coupe keep the nose. Read "Spied: 2007/2008 BMW 3-Series sedan facelift (335i Sedan)" @ Leftlane News

Paris Preview: Audi Q7 V12 TDI Friday, we brought you the initial report that Audi would be dropping a 6.0-liter V12 TDI based on it's Le Mans-winning engine into the Q7 SUV. That report has been confirmed today with the release of additional details and photos from Audi, which will publicly unveil the beast later this month at the Paris show. Our initial report rated the car at 500 hp, but it's actually just shy, at 493 (the 500 rating is in PS). It also generates 1000 Nm / 738 lb-ft of torque, so if you ever feel inclined to pull your house off its foundation, you'll be well-prepped to give it the 'ol college try (if the car makes it to this side of the Atlantic). TCC Test: 2007 Suzuki SX4 Though it's called a crossover, the SX4 has all the desirable attributes of a "station wagon"-you know, that ancient phrase for, um, essentially the same thing. It's a five-door hatchback with second-row seats that tumble forward for maximum cargo-carrying. Five passengers fit in its chairs, and as long as you're not the poor guy sitting in the middle of the second row, life is pretty good. And its bottom line includes one very coveted attribute: standard all-wheel drive. Suzuki says the $14,999 SX4 is the lowest-priced all-wheel-drive vehicle sold in the United States. TCC Test: 2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Mitsubishi is celebrating its 25th anniversary of selling cars in the U. S. by unveiling the second-generation Outlander compact SUV, and the competition should take notice. Compact in name only, the 2007 Outlander is longer, taller and wider than the model it replaces. A wider track helps increase hip room. And despite a minimum ground clearance of 8.5 inches, step-in is easy and car-like. In other words, this new Outlander's a much stiffer competitor for the RAV4, the CR-V, and the Escape. And with its newly acquired third-row seat, the Outlander puts a foot in the world of true mid-sized utes like the Honda Pilot.
