  1. It would be foolish not sell another car based on this driveline. With the needed investment along with the investment already made they need to continue to improve and refine this system. Spreading the cost will only help. This car is not expected to make a profit for a while but at some point it will need to pay off. Cheaper parts and performace will be what help pay this off and only more development will get GM there. As for the Diesel and Hybrids they are coming anyways. It is going to take all of these to keep Luxury cars alive in the future.

Selling the Electric Cadillac now will seed a segment that will be needed in the future. If you don't build up the segment the cars will never get the development and funding needed to improve them.

There is no silver bullet here to solve the issues facing future regulations. GM will have to work all options to meet the regs and still sell cars people can live with. If you note the one goal of the Volt is to act and feel like a normal car. This is what they want to do with all types of new drivetrain technology and we will see them make attempts to meet this goal with all models.

    I actually agree with this.

Might not be a bad idea to offer a conventional version of the Converj to spread the costs even farther. The bodywork is dead-sexy, so why not?

  2. Seafoam and fresh gas made no difference (except the plugs got nice and clean).

Threw in some new AC plugs - no change

    Re-did a ground wire - no change

A friend is going to bring a scan tool by on Sunday, we'll see if that sheds any light.

  3. I'm not going to argue with you too much because I know you're love of Holden, but that is a bit of revisionist history right there. GMNA did the Sigma platform, the platform that the flagship of all GM rides on, the CTS-V. A platform that is only out handled by a BMW M3 when you put a 78 year old behind the wheel of the Cadillac and a 22 year old behind the wheel of the BMW. I'd say that GMNA got that platform "right".

The revisionist history is this: Every Holden Commodore from 1978 to 2002 was borrowed from an Opel platform and modified for AU use. I am not discounting at all the great job that Holden did with these modification, but at their hearts, they are still Opel chassis that Holden built on. Think of Holden as Opel's performance division if you wish, but they are Opel platforms tuned by Holden. Contrast that to GMNA which did Sigma from the ground up and made it the best performing sedan, coupe, and wagon in the company.

Again, Sigma is Caddy-only. And as good as it is, it is only a tiny bright spot in the overall gloom that is RWD from GMNA in the last few decades.

As for Holden, what they did is remarkable. They aren't a "performance division" of Opel, they took the Opel and completely re-engineered it, expanded it's range, re-powered it, re-bodied it, and exported it around the globe.

Then they created Zeta, which is as good as, if not better than, Sigma. All the while, pre andf post Zeta they trounced Sigma's main target: BMW.

    GMNA dithers, Holden produces.

That said, the real issue is that the idea of yanking the Commodore (and RWD in general), is simply indefensible.

  4. Here are some pics that actually look like an engine: ... post-394-0-49247500-1320899102.jpg post-394-0-34611700-1320899130.jpg ...
An observation... Did the rear-most ports on the heads stay sealed/covered by the intake plenum gaskets? Would that matter? In case the pictures in the quoted text don't show up, I'm referring to the 5th and 6th photos in this post.

Those are coolant ports, and are designed to be that way. I did a double-take when I first saw them too, but they are correct.

  5. Some really cool details...like the ram emblem w/ wings on each side above the bumper...interesting..so Dodge had the ram brand imagery that far back..

    Yup.

Technically, it is Dodge Brothers, not simply Dodge. This is the last year of the Dodge Brothers name (pre-Chrysler).
