Yah! Spare parts! Didn't do too much interesting on my birthday. Volunteered for the Habitat for Humanity store, got a new flashlight, some gas money and an ice cream cake. Economy is still bad so money is tight. When the economy picks up next year and I make my first million I'll take you all out for a beer.

How do you make so little horsepower with so many cubic inches? I'm sure the there are breathing issues with the flathead arrangement and metallurgy issues with iron that old, but that can't account for all of it.

Unique water-based ‘three-wet’ process cuts emissions on Chevrolet Sonic Link: http://www.egmcartech.com/2011/09/30/water-based-three-wet-paint-chevrolet-sonic/ General Motors has begun using a new eco-friendly paint technology on the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic. A “three-wet” paint is a water based process that takes out the drying step in between paint layers, so the vehicle only needs to go through the bake oven process once, at the end. Cutting its carbon footprint by 10 percent the Orion Assembly Center saves space and lowers energy requirements for heating and cooling. Mauricio Pincheira, Orion’s paint manger says “Cutting our greenhouse gas emissions and reducing our energy consumption were key to implementing our water-based ‘three-wet’ paint process. We want to provide a durable paint that impresses our first-time Chevrolet Sonic customers and maintain the tough environmental standards we have across the company.” The paint technique is being used with increased frequency across the globe, although this is its first usage in the U.S. Color and shine are expected to be extremely durable and long lasting. Once the process is fully implemented, manufacturing costs will be cut by about $40 per unit and trims greenhouse gas emissions by 80,000 metric tons per year.

At 11:33 p.m. Sunday, a uniformed officer got a call to his squad cellphone from an unknown caller. The caller asked the officer if he could buy a pound of marijuana, Sgt. Marty Sayre said. The officer received multiple phone calls from the suspect in an attempt to meet for the sale. The officer arranged to meet with the suspect in the 1100 block of 15th Avenue South. Officers went on foot to the location. When the suspects saw the officer, they ran but were quickly arrested, Sayre said. Kewon Donte Johnson, 21, of St. Cloud and Steven Ray Hendricks Jr., 27, of Shoreview were arrested. During the investigation one of the suspects tried to get rid of items he had, Sayre said. Police said they recovered $3,060 in counterfeit $20 bills and a small amount of marijuana. Johnson and Hendricks were taken to Stearns County Jail. They face possible charges of felony possession of counterfeit currency. ****************************************************************** It could have been worse. They could have tried using the counterfeit bills with a real dealer and gotten shot.

Link: http://content.usatoday.com/communities/driveon/post/2011/09/gm-general-motors-chevrolet-colorado-small-pickup-trucks/1?csp=obinsiteGM is making big bet on small pickup truck market Is the upcoming Chevrolet Colorado pickup the solution to a problem that has vexed automakers for years, or the answer to a question nobody asked? Chevrolet is betting hundreds of millions of dollars and several hundred jobs the new midsize pickup will breathe life into what some automakers consider a dying market segment -- small and midsize pickups. The UAW says the pickup is scheduled for production at GM's assembly plant in Wentzville, Mo., as part of the automaker's new contract with the union. Smaller pickups were once a vital part of the U.S. auto industry. They helped automakers meet fuel economy requirements. They were the affordable new vehicle of choice for many young buyers. They've dwindled to virtual irrelevance. Their price and size grew close to that of full-size pickups such as the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150, and good small cars replaced them among first-time buyers. Midsize pickups account for about 2.2% of vehicle sales so far this year, according to figures from Autodata. The Ford F-150 alone outsold all seven small pickups on the market nearly 2-to-1 through August. "Manufacturers killed their own vehicles by hyper-discounting full-size pickups" to the point where a bigger, roomier and more powerful truck cost about as much as a midsize, said Jim Hall, managing director of 2953 Analytics in Birmingham, Mich. Automakers are fleeing the segment like a burning building. They feel there's no money to be made there. Chrysler stopped building the Dodge Dakota earlier this year. Ford Ranger production ends soon. The Honda Ridgeline is expected to disappear when the current model goes. Nevertheless, GM's product-development brain trust has had its eye on the segment for years. They're convinced there's a market for small trucks, if you get the formula right. For the new Colorado to succeed, Chevy must charge less or give buyers more. Preferably both. The pickup was engineered to be rugged, capable and inexpensive. GM's Brazilian tech center developed it with an emphasis on creating a tough, versatile vehicle. It will be a mainstay of Chevy's lineup in Asia, South America, Africa and the Middle East. The current Colorado, and its sibling the GMC Canyon, were developed by former GM partner Isuzu. Toyota has proven you can make money and win loyal customers if you build a great small or midsize truck and price it appropriately. The Tacoma is a mainstay of Toyota's lineup. Though many automakers desert the segment, Toyota plans to introduce an all-new version next year. The Tacoma is the definitive vehicle in its class. To succeed, the new Colorado will have to convince buyers its price, fuel economy, size and features match or beat the new Toyota. That won't be easy. Early indications are the new Chevy will be slightly smaller than the current Colorado and Tacoma. It may get a diesel engine to boost fuel economy significantly. It's likely to offer several variations of cab and bed size. "It's going to be interesting," Hall said. "The market will ultimately decide" if the wiser strategy is to build a better small pickup or ditch the segment and concentrate on larger trucks. ******************************************************************************************** This is the part that's really irritating: GM should focus on what makes people buy smaller trucks in the first place (easy to maneuver, good on gas, affordable, etc). Make sure Chevrolet gets the 4cyl/manual/rubber floor mat version to sop up any left over Ranger business, give GMC a Denali version and GM should have their bases covered. Thoughts?

Boeing to deliver first 787 after years of delays Link: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Boeing-to-deliver-first-787-apf-4218156513.html Boeing delivers its first 787 jet on Sunday. It's been a long time coming. The new jet, which was supposed to be flying passengers three years ago, has been delayed by production and design problems. But now it's here, and airlines expect it to offer travelers much more comfort, open up new routes and provide significant fuel savings. The first one goes to Japan's All Nippon Airways, which has been printing the 787 logo and "We Fly 1st" on its business cards for years. Airlines love the jet, which Boeing calls the Dreamliner. They've ordered more than 800, well above levels for previous new jets. "A lot of carriers are betting that this is going to be a winner," says George Hamlin, president of Hamlin Transportation Consulting in Fairfax, Va. Instead of the usual aluminum skin, most of the 787 is covered in carbon fiber, basically a high-tech plastic that is strong but lightweight. Military planes and portions of other jetliners have used that material for years, but this is the first time so much has been used on an airliner. The new material brings improvements that passengers should notice. Its strength allows windows to be bigger and higher, so passengers don't have to hunch over to see the horizon. Electronic dimming replaces pull-down shades. That should mean you'll no longer be blinded when the guy next to you falls asleep with the shade up. Finally, the cabin is pressurized to the equivalent of 6,000 feet, instead of the usual 8,000 feet. That means air pressure will be closer to what passengers are used to on the ground. And without corrosion-prone aluminum skin, the humidity can be kept higher. Those two changes should reduce dry noses and throats. All Nippon plans to begin flying the 787 from Tokyo to Okayama-Hiroshima on Nov. 11. The first international route will be Tokyo to Frankfurt starting in January. The first U.S. customer is United Continental Holdings Inc., which will get its first 787s next year and plans to fly them between Houston and Auckland, New Zealand, and Houston and Lagos, Nigeria. Those are good examples of "thin routes" that airlines say the 787 will be good for -- routes for which there is regular demand that won't fill a larger plane. The 787's size, fuel efficiency and long range should allow airlines to turn a profit on those routes. The jet will be as much as 20 percent more fuel-efficient than planes it replaces. Its efficiency was a nice perk when Boeing first proposed the 787 in its current form in 2003. Now it's essential for airlines dealing with high fuel costs. Building an all-new plane like the 787 is a massive undertaking. Delays stacked up. Boeing was hit with an eight-week strike in 2008. It had to reinforce the spot where the 787's wings meet the fuselage. In November, the company had to delay the plane further after an electrical fire forced a landing during a test flight. Boeing expects to deliver a combined 25 to 30 of the 787s and new 747-8 this year. To meet the high demand. Boeing has set an ambitious goal of building 10 per month by the end of 2013. No one has ever made a large plane that fast. Richard Aboulafia, an aerospace analyst at the Teal Group, thinks Boeing will miss that goal because the company hasn't smoothed out its production process fully. It's also not clear when the 787 will make money. Boeing already took a $2.5 billion charge in 2009 on the program, and it owes additional money to customers for the late deliveries. Boeing executives have said they will announce when the jet will be profitable after the first one is delivered. The 787 list price runs between $185 million and $218 million. Discounts on new jets are common, though. Aboulafia says it's not clear how steep the discounts offered by Boeing were to lock in all the orders. Boeing rival Airbus hopes to soon launch its new A350, also made with a significant amount of carbon composites. A successful 787 will put pressure on Airbus to meet its fuel-efficiency goals, and to deliver the plane on time.

Link: http://media.gm.ca/content/media/ca/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/ca/en/2011/Sep/0909_EquinoxScience of Sound in Chevy Equinox Saves Cash at the Pump Oshawa, Ontario (September 9, 2011) – General Motors engineers borrowed from stereo headphone technology to help give the Chevrolet Equinox segment-leading fuel efficiency. Noise and Vibration Development Engineer Jim Vallance and his colleagues at GM’s Milford Proving Ground were tasked with pushing the 2011 Equinox to get a segment-best, 6.1 L/100km highway fuel consumption, better than segment competitors Honda CR-V (7.1 L/100km), Toyota RAV4 (6.9 L/100km) and even the Ford Escape Hybrid (6.5 L/100km). They knew they could accomplish this if they could run the Equinox engine at a lower RPM and find a way to offset the higher cabin noise levels that resulted. “There’s a boom, or very low frequency rumble that comes from the engine when it runs in that RPM range,” said Vallance. “We knew if we could deaden those booms, we could run the engine at the lower RPM, which would provide a significant boost to fuel efficiency. So we started kicking around ideas and came up with noise cancellation like you see in some high-end stereo headphones.” Vallance and his colleagues created an Active Noise Cancellation module that detects when the engine is running in the 1,000 – 1,500 RPM range. This engine speed triggers the module to create a sound-killing countermeasure through the vehicle speakers, essentially eliminating the unwanted sound. Adapting noise cancellation technology to work in a vehicle interior was difficult. High levels of ambient noise from the road, stereo system and occupant conversations posed challenges that required a surgical approach to noise cancellation. “We take a proactive approach and target only the unwanted sound in the vehicle, which in this case is linked with the engine firing frequency. Then we eliminate it,” said Vallance. Vallance is a second-generation GM engineer with a patent and other innovations under his belt. He characterizes Active Noise Cancellation as a “bold step taken late in development” that helped improved fuel efficiency. Active Noise Cancellation is standard on the Equinox with a 4-cylinder engine.
