Alpha-Numeric Bullcrap

Featured Replies

I once knew this girl from Oakland, her name was Bonnie Ville-Catalina and her gag reflex was pretty bad... I was always tempest to go for a happy ending but she never allowed for it. Other than that she was hot like a Firebird. :P

"G6" really doesn't bother me at all. "GTO" is legend and most of the other Pontiacs have 'word' names... which IMO makes G6 something leaning towards.... special. A great or even very good car can 'make' it's name, even an alpha-numeric one. What would make me hate "G6" is if it was the opening shot in a lineup of 'G3', 'G4', 'G6', 'G8' madness (like M3, M5, M6, etc). Horrible.

Keep in mind that Olds often wrote out the name, too, as in Eighty-Eight vs 88.

In Mexico, the Pursuit is the G4, and the Matiz is also known as the G2. Why did Pontiac do the sensible thing in Canada and call the Cobalt rebadge the Pursuit there?
I do not know why "old" names (Tempest, etc.) are abandoned, and I think that it is too bad, but I can tell you that a big reason why there are so many alphanumeric names for new entries is that most "good" names have already been trademarked...there simply are NOT that many good car names left. Think of Porsche Cayanne...most likely any decent off road "image" sounding name was already trademarked by another manufacturer, even if not in use yet...so Porsche had to take a different slant on the name.
