  1. If GM buys Proton, will that keep them ahead of Toyota in production numbers worldwide? I'm not sure how many cars Proton produces.
  2. I don't know what GM plans to price these Astras out at, but they sure in hell make the Aveo and the Cobalt (less so) look like crap. As a matter of fact, this car looks better than the Versa, Fit, and Yaris. GM is only planning on selling 30K-40K of them, so that must mean they're going to price it pretty high?
  3. I guess what makes it so bad is that GM forgot the little stuff that doesn't cost money really. I know about Honda and the stereos, but that would've been expensive to makeover. But how much are hooks are handles? There's no redesigning involved. No engineers need to figure out how to make it fit. It's just a plastic piece. It seems to me GM should fix that ASAP.
  4. Why is everyone convinced this wouldn't past anti-trust? 30 years ago, that would be the case, but the car market is so fragmented that even Ford and GM together wouldn't control half of the market. The Japanese, Koreans and Europeans still would control more of the American market. Also you have to remember that the Bush admin. is allowing all mergers to go forth pretty much. If AT&T can swallow up BellSouth and re-create another monopoly just about, then Ford and GM is nothing. Ford and GM may not happen for many reasons, but anti-trust won't be one of the reasons stopping them.
  5. In central Kentucky, every other car is a Camry. It's really right sickening. Even if I loved Japanese cars, I couldn't buy one that everyone else has. The Camrys are made about 20 min. from Lexington. I will say though that the domestic trucks are still everywhere, but Camrys are a dime a dozen. I'm love the ads and wouldn't mind GM doing some commercials like this. It's very creative and reminds people that GM is tons more beneficial to the American economy than Toyota.
  6. I'm in Lexington too. There's a neat billboard at the corner of Russell Cave and New Circle. It's something like: "WE GOT 10 PLANTS TOO.....IN OHIO!" I love the billboard!! I thought it was very creative. The Toyota plant in Georgetown is nearby, so the ad is a direct assault in the middle of Toyota land.
  7. The WSJ reported that GM will entertain a pact with other companies, should the N-R deal fall through. It sounds almost like Rick has planned out the outcome of the 90 review. Well anyway, I got to thinking about VW. What do you guys think of those companies coming together in some capacity? VW wouldn't threaten GM in North America at all and the 2 companies would be a juggernaut in Europe, Asia, and South America. Unlike Nissan-Renault, VW does have some good technology and masterful interior making that could actually help GM in America. On the downside, VW is plagued with their own problems too, but not to the extent of Ford.
  8. I've been saying that Ford + GM might be good. They would be a global force to be reckoned with. Even in Europe, they'd be a huge force. Globally, the merger makes sense and would be worthwhile. However, the big problems would lie in N.A. where they'd have to shutter dealers and brands.
  9. I actually wouldn't be surprised to see G-N-R hook up some future projects that may save the companies money. I have no problem with that at all so long as shares don't swap.
  10. Well that's why Rick is meeting with Ghosn. I think Ghosn will not pursue a hostile takeover, no matter how much Kerkorian wants too. Rick is going to talk with Ghosn and let him know he's not interested, and then hopefully Ghosn will let it die. I really can't fathom Ghosn spearheading a hostile takeover. It would cause way too much conflict and upheaval.
  11. It's from an WSJ article, but it's a pay site, so unable to read it. But that was the headline. THANK GOD! The best decision Wagoner, Lutz, and Co., have made in a while! I think they need to go through the motions and consider the deal, but in the end, they will reject it. And I think the board will go ahead and reject it as well. It's the wrong time to consider an alliance like this. Besides, if GM starts making money sometime soon, they may be able to buy Nissan-Renault in a few years.
  12. Well more importantly than the watercraft, GM would get some silky, smooth engines to use in small and midsize sedans. I'm not saying GM doesn't have good engines, but I've driven the new Accord and and its powertrain is flawless. But even bigger than that, Honda has been recognized as having the best diesel engines in Europe. The European Accord's diesel engine has been raved about as being superior to any German competitor. But of course, GM has already paid a ton to buy FIAT's diesel engines.
  13. Cadillac and BMW could exist together. I don't think Cadillac is hurting BMW sales much at all. But BMW technology could benefit GM is so many ways and make their cars even more better. BMW suspension and steering in Buicks would really make them true rivals to Lexus.
  14. Yeah, I forgot about BMW. They'd probably be the best partner above all. I don't hope GM gets in any mergers, but alliance partners can be very valuable when done right. GM has had lousy partners in the past. But if GM is going to get with alliances, then get with the right ones. A BMW V12 could power a new Cadillac ULS. This is where alliances can help you.
  15. I don't think R-N tie up is good for GM at all, just for the fact that GM doesn't gain much. I wouldn't mind a tie up if GM gained quite a bit out of it. With that being said, I think Honda and VW would be the best partners for GM if GM had to be in an alliance. Both companies have technologies that GM could use. GM could help VW in America, and vice versa in Europe. Outside of those 2 companies, I'm not excited about any others. But what about Ford? Hmm...GM buying Ford and dumping Lincoln, Mercury, and Pontiac? Could that work? It would be a juggernaut in North America and Europe for sure.
