Rolls-Royce: No Electric or SUV, More Ghost Variations

Car & Driver had the chance to sit down with Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös to talk about what the next few years hold for the luxury brand.

First, Müller-Ötvös said the 102EX concept shown at last year’s Geneva Motor Show will not go into production. The 102EX concept was a Phantom with an electric powertain taking the place of the V12 engine. The 102EX was built to see if customers were interested in a electric Rolls. The results?

“The results were ambivalent,” said Müller-Ötvös.

In one respect, customers loved the acceleration and utter silence. But, “on the other hand, the charging times are not acceptable, and the range is not acceptable.”

When asked about other alternative powertrains, Müller-Ötvös responded,

“In the long run, I could imagine an alternative powertrain, but that technology would be different.”

Müller-Ötvös also talked about not doing an SUV, as Bentley intends to do.

“Rolls-Royce stands for the best sedans in the world, magnificent coupes and convertibles, and we really would like to retain this identity. I have a difficult time imagining an SUV for our brand.”

For the short term, Müller-Ötvös wants to make the Ghost more dynamic.

“A Rolls-Royce can certainly not be sporty in the sense of an overly firm suspension, but it can certainly be more dynamic than it was in the past. The Ghost is definitely a driver’s car, with an 80 percent conquest rate. Those customers use their car every day.”

When asked about what that could bring, Müller-Ötvös said there could be a Ghost coupe and convertible.

Totally agree with the CEO, no need for SUV or Green ride as this product line is about being the most luxury car line around. Keep it exclusive as a dream line for the masses and the 1% only being able to buy it.

    • I read that and it's really too bad.  Some of them have great goofy personalities that shine through.  The only cat we had when I was a kid was a black female and she had a great personality.
    • The Ranger Raptor has a timing belt that is problematic, that is a no go for me. The motor in my Ranger has a timing chain.  I really want 400 plus miles of Range, would like more in my Ranger to be honest.
    • Saw this at around noontime.  It's not the very last-gen MC, hence 2005 and before.  It's not my color, but it's in incredible condition ... This would have the 3400 V6 instead of the final 3500 VVT.  I was always sort of "meh" on the Chevy high-value 60 degree V6, but they have been long lasting workhorses for so many.  And, on the highway, they'd return 33 or 34 mpg on rented MCs and Impalas.  Now put that in your pipe and smoke it!
    • F150 owners don't as much either. Maverick owners very likely are buying because of efficiency. I'm sure they didn't exactly want a teens city number for fuel economy. Raptors also probably have 28-36 gallon tanks. My MKC with it's little 15.1 gallon tank couldn't get 300 miles out of a tank unless you were driving all highway and also drove it to E. Sub-300 mile tanks is pretty annoying, to be honest. I know these Mavericks have 16.5 gallon tanks, so that is a pretty good improvement, and a 2.3 would still yield over 300 miles now...most likely.
