Corvette Stingray Design To Influence Future Models

Chevrolet Turns To The Corvette Stingray To Influence Newer Models

The current Chevrolet Corvette Stingray's design cues will used on upcoming Chevrolet models. Automotive News had the chance to speak with GM's vice president of global design, Ed Welburn who said designers are hard at work trying to infuse the Corvette Stingray's DNA into newer Chevrolet models.

"As Malibu and Cruze and Volt come to market, you'll be able to see a subtle link between some of the form vocabulary for all of them and Corvette," said Welburn. "I always look at the hood of the Corvette and the sectioning, the way it's taut, very lean, very sporty. That will be a part of really everything we do for Chevrolet."

The hope with adding some of the Corvette's design cues is that will help make Chevrolet's designs more competitive.

    As much as I love Chevrolet and the Corvette, this development begs the question;

    Why buy a Corvette?

This will make the Corvette look like a Malibu and not make a Malibu look like a Corvette.

A Corvette buyer will not want to spend $50k+ for something that will resemble an econobox.

GM and Chevrolet has done this for years. The Impala, Chevelle, Camaro have all shared styling hallmarks with the Corvette over the years to good effect.

Chevy has never tried to convince them their Impala is a Corvette but they do a good job of letting them know they are part of the same family.

There is no downside here if you know your GM history.

Hell my HHR SS has the same steering wheel as the ZR1 and it never stopped anyone from buying it so if  you want to chase that argument then it is groundless.

Is it me or is VW using the same styling cues as the Chevy Corvette?

Not really, the Vette's light up in a sort of shape. Besides, VW has used that style of LED taillights for quite some time now... 2010, I believe. It would be the other way around.

Subtle is definitely the keyword here.  Hopefully they don't make things to obvious otherwise people who are paying all the extra money for the corvettes won't be happy.  I don't think this is going to be a big issue by any means and I honestly don't think we will see any drastic changes on the econobox cars.

I think camaro practically already have those lights. However the change is kind of drastic, but we'll just have to see. I don't think they'll look horrible, or that the value of the car will decrease, cause I'll though some people are just die hard for their cars, others just get them for the name. If we are all being honest here, many sales have been made just cause the person knew the brand name of their car would bring them a lot of spotlight.

I love and have been following the Corvette models every since. And I definately think that using the Stingray as a model for future projects is an excellent choice. (This isn't coming from a fanboy at all).

This week, Hagerty obtained a document from General Motors' executive director in charge of program management, Michelle Braun that says development on future car and truck programs has been paused due to the COVID-19 outbreak. But the document also mentions some intriguing information on upcoming powertrains for the C8 Corvette. Here are the details,
Corvette Z06: 5.5L DOHC V8 known as the LT6 that will produce 650 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. No mention of any type of forced-induction. Corvette Gran Sport: 6.2L OHC V8 with a hybrid system that's expected to produce 600 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque. Corvette ZR1: Twin-Turbo 5.5L DOHC V8, dubbed LT7. Output is expected to be 850 horsepower and 800 pound-feet. Corvette Zora: The powerhouse of the C8, it will take the Twin-Turbo LT7 and augment with a hybrid system. This is expected to produce 1,000 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. Hagerty's report says the rollout of the new engines will begin in 2022 with the LT6, but the COVID-19 outbreak may push the plans back.

According to MotorTrend, fords Mach e while pissing off the mustang faithful has already sold out all production for America and Europe for the first year. As such with GM having a flexible EV platform and considerable new EVs coming over the next 3 years, this begs the question of Could GM produce a Camaro EV CUV and call it the Z28? With the first nine auto's off the EV platform to be a Cadillac, one has to wonder how GM might fit the sporty performance into their product line and having a performance CUV Camaro could be the magic ticket.
To quote the MotorTrend story: we'd expect a Chevy Camaro electric SUV to at least match the 255 horsepower Ford is targeting for the base Mustang Mach-E. For higher-trim variants, Chevy would likely have to adopt a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup to stay competitive with the 332-hp, 417-lb-ft Mach-E 4 and 459-hp, 612-lb-ft Mach-E GT.

At an event in Detroit this evening, Chevrolet took the wraps off the Tahoe and Suburban SUVs. We don't have specs yet to publish, but wanted to get the pictures out for you to see.  I will be updating the article as more details come out.
Six different trims will be offered including the new High Country trim, an RST trim, and Z71 becomes its own trim line instead of being offered as a separate package. LS, LT, and Premier trims carry on. Engines are the 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s, but the 3.0L Duramax will also be joining the lineup. The 5.3 and 6.2 now sport dynamic fuel management. All engines send power to the wheels through a 10-speed automatic. The Duramax is available on every trim except Z71.
      The power ratings are:
5.3-Liter - 355 Horsepower at 5600 RPM / 383 lb-Ft of torque at 4100 RPM 6.2-Liter - 420 Horsepower at 5600 RPM / 460 lb-ft of torque at 4100 RPM 3.0-Liter Duramax - 277 Horsepower at 3750 RPM / 460 lb-ft of torque at 1500 RPM The column shifter is gone, replaced with a new pushbutton design placed on the dash.  Thanks to a fully independent rear suspension, they both gain room inside. Magnetic Ride Control and an Air Ride Adaptive Suspension (available on Z71 and High Country) are available. The Air Ride suspension offers adjustable height of up to 4-inches at all four corners .
The dash sports a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment center standard. Buyers can opt for a rear seat entertainment system with twin 12.6-inch displays. Interior room is up; Tahoe sports 40 percent more third-row leg room and 66 percent more cargo volume behind the third row. While maximum cargo room is up 30 percent, the overall length increased only 4 percent. This is done on a wheelbase that is 4.9 inches longer than the 2020 model.  Suburban gets a 4.1 inch increase in wheelbase so that interior cargo volume increases 19 percent while overall length increases 1.3 inches.

    • I see what you're saying WRT wheelbase, but width is significantly down vs. 79". I've never been in either a Colorado or a tacoma... But my old F-150 was 133" WB & about 80" wide (regular cab).
    • People stick to themselves here, for some reason. I've made efforts, and I get along well with people, but I don't see any neighbor socializing. It's a shame, I'd enjoy such.

    • QUESTION for EVERYONE: With Covid-19 and Shelter in Place, have you come to better know your neighbors? I have read this morning in multiple stories in the news that one affect of our current pandemic and the return of knowing who your neighbors are. Something that was very common in the 50's and 60's of knowing who lives around you. One example was a cul-d-sac where the families has social distance, but gathered with their BBQ's and had a group dinner and talked at a distance. I honestly have seen my neighbors more, but do not really know them any more than I did the last 21yrs of living here in my house.
    • In the before time, I used to occasionally enjoy buffets and Monogolian BBQs..
