Rumorpile: Mazda Planning A 6-Based Crossover With Coupe Styling?

    William Maley

    October 8, 2012

A new report from Australia's Drive.com.au says Mazda is considering a crossover based on the new 6's platform.

“I want to create a crossover model … I can do it quite easily,” said Hiroshi Kajiyama, the 6′s program manager. “It is one of the things I am looking at. If you try to fill the empty space in the portfolio then you will be followed by other manufacturers immediately.

Kajiyama says the crossover will not fall into the traditional mold. Instead, it will follow the 'zoom-zoom' mantra of being a fine driver's car.

“I don’t think an SUV is going to offer a ton of driving pleasure,. The good thing about [a mid-sized] car is the low centre of gravity allows you to make you really feel the driving pleasure,” said Kajiyama.

Speculation has this new crossover design going down the four-door crossover coupe like the Acura ZDX and BMW X6.

Kajiyama says the crossover would take precedence over a two-door 6 coupe, something we reported back in August.

BLAW, I do not think Mazda will have a Zoom Zoom driving machine in the CUV class. At their price point, you can only do so much. Not a fan of their current cuv's.

Subaru is taking a page out of Honda's playbook with previewing new models via thinly disguised concepts. This morning at the New York Auto Show, the Japanese automaker unveiled the Ascent Concept.
To our eyes, the Ascent looks like a bigger Forester. Yes, it does have a more muscular look with a large grille and sculpting along the doors. The back end reminds us of the Levorg sold elsewhere in the world as it features similar styling. Move inside and the Ascent offers seating for up to seven people. The dashboard is concept-esq with touch-sensitive controls for the infotainment system, locks, and windows.
One interesting tidbit Subaru dropped was the Ascent would be powered by new turbocharged boxer-four engine. Specifics on horsepower and torque were not revealed.
The Ascent will go on sale in 2018. Expect to see the production version sometime later this or early next year.

      Rotary Powered Hybrid from Mazda?

According to Autoblog web site, Mazda has filed new patents that would use a single piston rotary generator to power an electric fwd hybrid auto. Mazda first brought this idea up in 2015 when they showed off their Mazda2 RE Range-Extender auto. This was powered by a 330CC rotary generator. This auto was patented but seemed to just go quiet. Two years later, Mazda has updated their patents and now seems to want to push this out globally on their product line.
The design of this auto's hybrid system seems to mirror the BMW i3 range extended auto. Thanks to the small size of the Rotary motor, this allows expanded space for a battery pack. Per the story, the rotary's strength is how small, quiet and smooth this engine runs which is a big benefit over small piston engines. They also state how they will close the intake port so there is no fuel or exhaust leaks leading to better fuel economy and emissions which is two known weaknesses of rotary engines.

Over all, the patent filings and updates would imply the roomy benefits of an EV but with the range benefits of the Volt. Instant torque for quick Zoom Zoom driving in a quiet package that will challange them all.

We know Cadillac is planning a major product offensive beginning with the XT3 crossover next year, along with a few other products such as a seven-seat crossover and a competitor to the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA. Automobile Magazine reports that Cadillac is planning eight all-new or redesigned models by 2022. They include,
XT3: (Compact crossover) in 2018 CT3: (ATS Replacement) in 2018 XT7: (Seven-seat crossover that is reported to be on Omega. Other reports put say it will use the platform underpinning the redesign Buick Enclave/Chevrolet Traverse) in 2019 CT5: (Replacement for the CTS) in 2019 XT1 or XT2 (Subcompact crossover) in 2020 XT5 Redesign (Possibly going on Omega) in 2021 CT1 or CT2 (A3 and CLA fighter) in 2021 CT8: (Flagship using Omega) in 2021 All of these models are expected to use an evolutionary design theme from the Escala concept. It is still unknown whether or not the CT1/CT2 will use the Delta front-wheel drive platform or use Alpha.
The brand is also planning investments totaling $800 million into their retail operations in the U.S.
