New Opel Car Design Competition Uses Social Media

Recommended Posts

German automaker Opel announced today it has launched a new design competition and encouraged all entrants to use social media as a tool to develop the designs for future cars. The competition, aimed at both interior and exterior design, will culminate with the announcement of the two winners at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011.

The first stage of the competition challenges European design students to develop a car interior that is “a lounge in motion”.

“What I’m excited about is for students to understand our brand,” stated Liz Wetzel, Director of Interior Design, Opel/Vauxhall, “because it is moving – it’s becoming much more dynamic, much more passionate and our clear vision can be seen in our recent products on both the interior and the exterior execution. What we’re looking for is not just for students to design, but to come up with an experience,” added Wetzel.

The interiors stage of the competition concludes on December 10, when the entries are frozen. The three best entries, as selected by the judges, will then be used as the brief for the second (exteriors) part of the competition, to be launched at the start of 2011.

The prize for the winning student of the interiors stage will be a paid internship at the Opel Design Center in Rüsselsheim, Germany.

"At Opel we are very excited and are looking forward to seeing what the young creative minds from all over Europe will come up with. We teamed up with Car Design News on this project because we truly believe in supporting young talent. In addition we are looking forward to seeing how engagement with the European design community via social media, for this one of a kind competition, will be accepted," stated Mark Adams, Vice President Design, Opel/Vauxhall.
