I am not drinking any merlot! By Donna DeRosa Date posted: 04-10-2006 Kia introduced its all-new 2006.5 Optima in scenic Napa Valley, California, where wine is king and Sideways the movie of choice. The sandy, hilly ground is ideal for growing grapes, and the curvy roads are perfect for test-driving cars. Even intermittent rain did not hamper our car-tasting pleasure. A fine blend of value and comfort, with subtle hints of sport Built in Kia's Hwasung manufacturing facility in South Korea, this second-generation Optima sits on a unique platform, no longer shared with Hyundai's Sonata. Kia says it took cues from European styling and lengthened the Optima's wheelbase, although the increase is less than an inch. A sleeker design lends a more upscale line to this midsize sedan and allows for more interior space. Two varietals are available, the economy-minded LX and the premium EX, each with either an inline four-cylinder or V6 engine. The absolute base model is the 2.4-liter four-cylinder LX with a five-speed manual transmission. This is the only trim level that offers a manual transmission and allows Kia to say the Optima starts at well under $17K. At $16,355, this base trim is $45 cheaper than the car it replaces. Standard equipment includes 16-inch wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, air conditioning, power windows and locks, an AM/FM/CD player with six speakers and 60/40-split folding rear seats. Opt for the five-speed automatic with Sportmatic manual shifting and you'll get cruise control, keyless entry and a tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio controls for $17,650. Kia predicts 80 percent of Optima buyers will drive home in a four-cylinder with an automatic transmission, which sounds right when you realize the 2.7-liter V6 LX adds a mere 24 horsepower and bumps the price to $19,345. Four-cylinder models are rated at 161 horsepower at 5,800 rpm and 163 pound-feet of torque at 4,250 rpm. That's more horses than the current four-cylinder versions of the Chevrolet Malibu, Mazda 6 and Toyota Camry and 23 more than the previous Optima. The small V6 only offers 185 hp at 6,000 rpm and 182 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, a pittance compared to the larger V6s in the Optima's competition. Combines depth, softness and much character Although we like the look of the dual exhaust pipes exclusive to V6 models, the EX four-cylinder is the one to get. It starts at $19,395 and includes alloy wheels, power-adjustable driver's seat, automatic temperature controls, a trip computer, chrome-accented exterior door handles and an Infinity premium audio system. The EX with a V6 starts at $20,400. Actually, our favorite configuration is the EX four-cylinder with the Appearance and Leather packages. It provided enough zest for romping up and down the valley and looked cool too, especially in Ruby Red. And we all know red goes with everything. The Appearance package gives a more aggressive look by adding a blacked-out front grille and headlights, foglights, aluminum interior trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob. It also adds 17-inch Michelin tires that gave the car "legs" and felt more secure than the standard 16s as we curled around the damp vine-lined roads of wine country. Available only on the EX, the leather package offers perforated leather seat trim, five-level heated front seats, power-adjustable pedals and a manual rear-window sunshade. Balanced, with a firm structure and medium acidity Independent MacPherson strut front suspension and multilink rear suspension featuring coil springs and stabilizer bars replace the double wishbones found underneath the previous vintage. The ride is pleasant, even with the 17-inch wheels and tires, and body roll is kept in check in the corners. Power-assisted rack and pinion steering is crisp and lively, but driving the rolling curves of the Napa Valley was a little more work than flat-out excitement. Response is good, but nobody should buy an Optima to tear around in. Four-wheel disc brakes are standard, but ordering the $600 Electronic Stability Control package is the only way to get ABS and a traction control system. It's worth the cash; however, the option is not available on the four-cylinder LX model. A tire-pressure monitoring system is standard. Smooth and mellow, with generous amounts of sweetness and strength Where this car shines is inside the cabin. A lot of work has gone into providing space for people and cargo and improving the look and feel of the interior materials. Nothing feels cheap. Knobs and dials feel substantial and the gauge cluster looks more upscale with blue and white lighting, instead of the previous yellow/green scheme. The leather is supple and even the standard seat cloth is soft and appealing. The seats are comfortable, yet lack lateral support and don't hold you in place as securely as we would like. Standard safety features include adjustable headrests and six airbags, including full side curtains. Front headroom has increased by almost an inch and front legroom by about half an inch. The overall length of the car has only increased by half an inch, but Kia has managed to add an inch and a half of legroom for rear passengers, enough to match the Camry and out-knee the Accord, Malibu and Mazda 6. Luggage capacity has increased slightly to 14.8 cubic feet and there's a wide, low entry to ease loading. There's also a pass-through to the rear seat for carrying long items, but it's only accessible from the trunk. Ripe, full-bodied with big flavor We enjoyed our tasting of the Kia Optima. In the crowded midsize sedan segment, it stands out as an inexpensive alternative. The option packages allow you to configure your Optima multiple ways, and even the base versions pack a long list of thoughtful features. And because the Optima weighs only 3,179 pounds, the four-cylinder packs enough spice that you need not splurge on the V6. Kia continues to improve with age. I don't know if this caught anyone else's eye: Horsepower (hp / kw): XE: 265 / 198 @ 6600 rpm w/ single exhaust (est.) XR: 267 / 199 @ 6600 rpm w/ dual exhaust (est.) Torque (lb-ft / Nm): XE: 244 / 331 @ 3200 rpm w/ single exhaust (est.) XR: 247 / 335 @ 3200 rpm w/ dual exhaust (est.) --- Why is there such a miniscule difference in power between the XE and XR trims? Why bother making the power output different at all if it's going to be that insignificant?

Sorry, supposed to be "wouldn't". I got to keep working on these damn typos.

The Revolution Revisited -Variance April 14, 2006 You may recall six months ago I wrote my article Saturn’s Revolution. In it, I waxed lyrical about Saturn’s latest products and thought they were they key to a complete Saturn turnaround. The three products as you know are the Sky, Aura, and Outlook. The thing of it is that back then, we didn’t know the Sky would have much more to offer, the Aura was still a concept and the Outlook hadn’t even been revealed to public eyes yet. Fast-forward six months later to the New York International Auto Show... The Sky with No Limit If you needed any more reason to lust after a Sky, I’d first smack you upside the head and kindly ask what the hell is wrong with you and if you were blind and/or stupid. Then I would direct your attention to the Saturn Sky Red Line. The Sky RL improves upon the gorgeous standard Sky in power and (surprisingly) looks. It powered by the new direct-injected, turbocharged 2.0L Ecotec engine that’s used in the Sky’s platform-mate, the Solstice GXP. This gives it about 47% more horsepower and 56.5% more torque than the base car. The Red Line also has detail changes done to the body to make the Sky look meaner and better (something I didn’t think was humanly possible). • The headlights are tinted. • The front fascia side intakes have been revised. • Dual exhaust outlets are added. • Red Line badging appears on the rear and on the seats. • Finally, there’s what really lets people know you own a turbo Sky: a “Turbo” badge on the rear. What’s an S2000? Saturn’s True Aura The Aura Concept looked very promising indeed. It had a sharp and aggressive design becoming of an Opel and a modern interior that looked to be one of the better ones in its class. As we all know, concepts are often different from production cars but the production Aura was to retain much of the concept’s looks. The actual result...? Well, obviously some toning down has occurred: the fender flares and lower front fascia are a bit less bold, the wheels are different and the interior looks less sci-fi. However, the overall design inside and out is pretty much unchanged which is a good thing since the Aura looks pretty good. The Aura is to come in two trims, XE and the higher-level XR. Not surprisingly the XR is the more impressive of the two. It comes with a 252-hp 3.6L HF V6 engine and it paired with a new 6-speed automatic transmission which features paddle shifters on the wheel. The Aura will be facing some very stiff competition. The new Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion are available now and are selling very well. Not to mention the new Nissan Altima (also shown in New York) and DCX family sedans the Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring are just around the corner. The Aura will be in for a tough fight but I believe it will be able to hold its own. The Brand’s Outlook Has Been Revealed Until recently, the look of the Saturn Outlook was (outside of a few spy shots and teaser photos) a big mystery. The mystery was solved April 12 when GM unveiled the entire Outlook to the world for the first time. The Outlook is the first production vehicle based on GM’s Lambda platform. The Outlook is a seven-passenger crossover available with FWD or AWD and is powered by the same 3.6L V6 and 6-speed transmission used in the Aura. In the Outlook, it provides more grunt: 267 horsepower and 247 lb-ft of torque in the XR (less 2hp and 3 lb-ft in the XE). Admittedly, when I first saw the Outlook, I wasn’t blown away by its styling. It’s not that I don’t like it; I just was expecting something a little different. As I type this, the styling is growing on me but I’m still not as in awe as I was with the Buick Enclave concept. The interior, though, is very impressive in my opinion. It has a rich look to it that is pretty inviting. It should compete well against the likes of the Chrysler Pacifica and upcoming Mazda CX-9. Now GM, will you please finally kill the Relay? We have something much better now. My Prognosis I can proudly say in can stand by my belief that I stated back in October: these new Saturns are going to lead to great things for the brand and General Motors. Saturn has never been in a better position to create some headaches for its competitors and there’s still more to come. There’s still the current Vue and Ion to take care of. If the PreVue concept is anything to go by, the future of the Vue looks very bright. As for the Ion, it’s future isn’t as clear but personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see a Saturn Astra in our future. Saturn is quickly more and more becoming the GM brand to watch.

New York: 2007 Suzuki SX4
Variance replied to Variance's topic in New York International Auto Show (NYIAS)
I believe so. Actually with further searching, I can't seem to find a definitive answer on that. Some places say this is replacing it; others are unclear. -
Sorry, Sixty. I'm not even going to be around this weekend. I'm going to be out and about aiding relatives elsewhere.

Huh, can we say "awkward and ponderous"? Anyway, the highlight of my day was a dark blue mint Audi RS6. Also, another 2007 Camry. This one was a silver SE with tinted windows. The body kit looks better in person. Still tacked on but better.

2007 Mitsubishi Outlander Makes North American Debut At New York International Auto Show; 220 Hp V-6 And 6-Speed Transmission Standard April 12, 2006 -- NEW YORK -- Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) unveils the U.S. version of its next-generation Outlander compact sport-utility vehicle at the 2006 New York International Auto Show. The all-new, larger Outlander, which will reach Mitsubishi dealerships in November, offers a compelling blend of driven-to-thrill dynamics, bold styling, five- or seven-passenger versatility, plus numerous user-technology firsts for the compact SUV segment. The 2007 Outlander is based on a new performance-engineered global platform that will also form the foundation of the next-generation Mitsubishi Lancer and Lancer Evolution models. All Outlander models for 2007 will be powered exclusively by a new 220 hp aluminum MIVEC V-6 engine teamed to a six-speed Sportronic® automatic transmission with available magnesium Sportronic steering wheel paddle shifters - a segment first. In another segment first, the California-emissions V-6 will be the first in the compact SUV segment to be P-ZEV certified. Two trim lines available for 2007, the well equipped Outlander LS and sport/luxury XLS, each will be available with standard front-wheel drive or an optional electronically controlled 4WD system -- All-Wheel Control (AWC). Mitsubishi's All-Wheel Control philosophy for Outlander combines electronically controlled 4-wheel drive with Active Skid and Traction Control and a tuned suspension, plus an aluminum roof that lowers the center of gravity for better handling response. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard on XLS models. The result is an SUV that delivers handling dynamics, stability and a level of driver engagement uncommon in the class. The 2007 Outlander's safety package is one of the most comprehensive in the segment and includes an advanced dual front air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors, standard front seat-mounted side-impact air bags and side curtain air bags (front and second row), plus energy-absorbing head protection interior pillars. All models include as standard an anti-lock braking system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), as well as a tire pressure monitor system. "The 2007 Outlander brings Mitsubishi's 'Driven to Thrill' performance and design to the compact SUV segment, where we believe its combination of style, performance, versatility and value will make it a standout choice," said Hiroshi Harunari, president and CEO, Mitsubishi Motors North America. "The Outlander also previews new design language for Mitsubishi and strongly hints at the performance potential of this new platform." A Driver's SUV The 2007 Outlander debuts an all-new aluminum 3.0-liter SOHC V-6 engine that produces 220 hp at 6,250 rpm and 204 lb-ft. of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. The Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control system (MIVEC) helps optimize power and engine efficiency across a broad engine speed range. The new V-6 is teamed exclusively with a 6-speed Sportronic automatic transmission that allows manual shifting. Outlander XLS models present a sporty element seen in high-performance cars - magnesium Sportronic steering wheel paddle shifters. Outlander's highly rigid unibody body structure, which makes extensive use of high-strength steel, allows for sport-oriented suspension tuning while also providing a smooth, compliant ride. Its front suspension employs strut tower bars to enhance lateral rigidity for precise steering response. The rear multilink suspension system provides an excellent balance of handling performance and ride comfort. Outlander LS models feature standard 16-in. steel wheels with 215/70 R16 tires, with alloy wheels available as an option. On Outlander XLS models, standard 18-in. aluminum-alloy wheels with 225/55 R18 all-season tires enhance handling and style. The Bold New Look of Mitsubishi The 2007 Outlander debuts a new Mitsubishi design language that captures the performance-oriented essence of the brand. Clean, sharp lines, featuring a "diamond cut" front end and boldly sculpted fender flares, evoke the athleticism of a sport sedan and the sophistication of a premium SUV. The LED tail lamp clusters give the rear of the vehicle a distinctive appearance. On XLS models, privacy tinted rear glass, roof rails, dual tailpipe outlets and silver-painted door handles and bumper extensions emphasize the upscale appearance. Available xenon HID head lamps enhance road illumination and accentuate the high-tech styling. Mitsubishi likewise designed the 2007 Outlander interior to look and feel more like a sport sedan's than a typical compact SUV's. Smooth forms and sculpted door panels are set off by silver-accent trim, and the deeply contoured front bucket seats and motorcycle-style instrument panel gauges suggest sports car more than sport-utility. Underscoring the 2007 Outlander's attention to utility and usability, all models feature as standard a unique odor-defeating head liner. Interior Flexibility Outlander offers ample room for five -- or seven with an underfloor-stowable compact third row seat that folds flat into the floor when not needed (XLS models). The second-row seat features 60/40 split fold-and-tumble seats. The second-row seat backs fold forward and then the seats can be tumbled forward to expand cargo capacity. Five-seat models feature an under-floor compartment that's out-of-sight. The load floor is eight inches lower than on the original Outlander, and loading bikes (with wheels on) or large packages is made easier by the segment's first flap-fold tailgate. When lowered, the tailgate can also serve as a seat for outdoor activities, with a capacity of 440 lbs. Ample storage spaces include useful bins and compartments, a movable front center console and door-panel bottle carriers. The 2007 Outlander can tow a trailer up to 2,000 lbs. as standard or up to 3,500 lbs. with the optional towing package. In-Car Electronics The 2007 Outlander offers many user technologies typically available on premium SUVs, some of which are firsts for the segment: an available satellite navigation system that features hard drive map data storage and music file capability; an available hands-free Bluetooth® cellular phone interface system with voice recognition; an available rear-seat DVD entertainment system that includes wireless headphones and remote control, and the available FAST-Key entry system allows vehicle unlocking and starting simply by carrying the key. The available Rockford-Fosgate® audio system with PUNCH® control plays through nine speakers with up to total 650 watts (max.) output, and the package also includes SIRIUS Satellite Radio with six months' free subscription, plus a power glass sunroof. Standout Value Standard equipment in Outlander LS includes air conditioning; ambient lighting; cruise control; engine immobilizer and anti-theft alarm system; keyless entry; power windows, locks and mirrors, and a powerful audio system with AM/FM/CD/MP3 playback capability and six speakers. Outlander XLS models add the underfloor-stowable compact third row seat; automatic climate control system; steering wheel audio remote control switches, and hands-free Bluetooth cellular phone interface system with voice recognition. The available XLS Luxury Package augments interior comfort with leather seating surfaces (front and second rows), heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver's seat. Premium Warranty Mitsubishi cars and light trucks are backed by a comprehensive new-vehicle limited warranty that covers the vehicle from bumper to bumper for five years/60,000 miles. In addition, the powertrain is covered by a 10-year/100,000 mile limited warranty, while body panels have a seven-year/100,000 mile anti-corrosion/perforation limited warranty. The program also includes 24-hour emergency roadside assistance with free towing to the nearest authorized Mitsubishi retailer for warranty-related repairs for five years/unlimited miles. ALL-NEW SUZUKI XL7 MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT 2006 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW Larger, more powerful Suzuki flagship SUV blends perfect mix of performance, comfort and safety NEW YORK (April 13, 2006) – American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) today debuted the all-new 2007 Suzuki XL7 midsize crossover SUV at the 2006 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). With the introduction of the new front-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive crossover SUV, Suzuki is moving forward to the next chapter in its ongoing SUV success story. The 2007 XL7 is bigger, bolder and more powerful than the previous generation XL-7 and retains Suzuki’s strong styling cues, while offering available all-wheel drive and available seven-passenger seating. In creating the all-new XL7, Suzuki leveraged its SUV heritage and expertise to design an all-new vehicle for the midsize SUV crossover segment that provides style, room and adaptability for active, mobile lifestyles. “The all-new XL7 was designed to blend SUV versatility and safety with increased driver and passenger comfort,” said Koji Yamada, chief engineer, XL7. “The XL7 not only offers the cargo and seating flexibility for all aspects of a consumer’s active lifestyle, but performance capabilities and safety features that give them the confidence of being in control.” Performance and Powertrain The all-new 2007 Suzuki XL7 evolves from a rear-wheel-drive, truck chassis SUV into a crossover SUV based on the sophisticated GM Theta platform with full-length underbody rails for added strength. The XL7 is now a front-wheel-drive vehicle that features four-wheel independent suspension and available all-wheel drive. The standard powertrain for the Suzuki XL7 is a GM-designed, Suzuki-built 3.6-liter, V6 DOHC engine rated at an estimated 250 hp with 243 lb-ft of torque. The XL7’s 3.6-liter, High Feature (HF) engine with variable valve timing will be built under license by Suzuki in Japan using Suzuki engine-building technology at the Sagara engine plant. The XL7 engine was developed as a joint effort between Suzuki and GM engineering and features unique Engine Control Unit (ECU) calibration. The use of the existing platform architecture accelerated the completion of the vehicle, which has been in development for three years. The 3.6-liter, six-cylinder, DOHC engine is matched to a five-speed automatic transmission that features a manual-shifting (manumatic) mode. Although the new engine is nearly one liter larger than the 2.7-liter engine used in the previous XL-7, the new, larger XL7 was designed to deliver fuel economy equal to or better than its predecessor. EPA fuel economy estimates are 18 mpg/city and 24 mpg/highway for front-wheel-drive variants and 17 mpg/city and 23 mpg/highway for all-wheel drive. Towing capacity is rated at 3,500 pounds. Advanced Chassis Design The sophisticated chassis delivers nimble, car-like ride and comfort whether driving on the highway, city streets or rural roads. The XL7’s responsive road manners communicate a sense of confidence and control in virtually every driving scenario, while still providing refined Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) performance at or near the top of the midsize SUV category. The XL7 features four-wheel independent suspension with MacPherson struts in the front and a multilink design in the rear. The independent rear suspension is fitted with hydraulic shock absorbers in the five-passenger configuration and Nivomat self-leveling rear shock absorbers when configured for the available seven-passenger design. The small details add up to provide a car-like ride. The MacPherson strut-type front suspension is designed with long wheel travel, and the design of the struts compensates for coil spring side loads. The bottom of the coil spring is anchored more outboard in the spring perch to relieve the bending load on the strut caused when it was located further outboard to improve stability. The multilink rear suspension design features a trailing arm plus three additional locating links to allow a low, wide load floor and maximum rear passenger space. The rear-trailing arm is a vertical design that provides flexibility in the twisting direction so the wheel can maintain camber as it moves vertically. The three locating links are designed to manage lateral loads and control the dynamic toe-in of the rear wheel. The 3.6-liter, V6 DOHC engine is mounted in a double-isolated engine cradle system; the engine mounts to the cradle at four points and the cradle mounts to the rails at four points, providing double isolation from the body. The cradle system features two side load-bearing mounts and front and rear torque reaction mounts. There also is a friction snubber mounted on the passenger side of the engine to help control engine movement sometimes experienced during shifting. All-Wheel Drive The available all-wheel-drive system uses an active, electronically controlled rear differential module. The system responds immediately to all-wheel-drive requests and effectively eliminates lag times. A four-mount cradle secures the rear drive module, which is regulated by its own dedicated electronic controller. A new-design propeller shaft fitted with upgraded universal joints handles the added torque. Hydraulic-Assist Rack-and-Pinion Steering The fixed-rate rack-and-pinion steering is tuned for responsiveness and good on-center feel. Turning diameter is relatively tight, needing only 41.8 feet for a curb-to-curb turn and the steering wheel requires 2.7 turns for lock-to-lock operation. In addition, the steering column can be adjusted up and down (four degrees) to provide added driver comfort. Stainless Steel Dual Exhaust System The all-new XL7 is fitted with a true dual exhaust system, constructed of durable, long-lasting stainless steel. The system was designed for quiet, refined exhaust tones to achieve “best in class” NVH in terms of quietness and tonal quality. The exhaust system features two downpipes, two catalytic converters, a center muffler, two side mufflers and two 3.5-inch diameter exhaust tips. Sleek Sophistication and Functionality Evolved from the Suzuki Concept-X, which debuted at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the all-new XL7 features a modern, sleek and expressive design with Suzuki styling cues, such as triangle-shaped turn lamps, bold three-bar grille with large Suzuki “S,” muscular wheel arches, dual exhaust with chrome tips and integrated roof racks. Plush Interior The 2007 Suzuki XL7 offers the driver and passengers a spacious, functional interior that provides upscale sophistication and refinement. The unique third-row seat delivers seven-passenger capability and real comfort. With its six-inch deep footwell, the stretched platform delivers comfortable third-row seating, offering nearly 40 inches of legroom and 38.8 inches of headroom. In addition, the 50/50 split folding third-row seat can be folded flat into the floor for additional cargo carrying room, and the fold-flat front-passenger seat allows room for longer items such as skis, surfboards or even a small kayak. In addition to the practicality of ample storage consoles and areas and the convenience of four 12-volt power outlets, the interior of the 2007 Suzuki XL7 features upscale wood or satin nickel appliqués on the instrument panel and doors, chrome accents throughout and matte black, low-gloss surfaces. Leather seating surfaces and leather-wrapped steering wheel are also part of certain trim packages. Safety Features The XL7’s safety features start with the body structure itself – a combination of computer-designed high-strength, dual-phase and galvanized steels. The body structure is computer-designed to manage loads – to effectively transfer energy absorbed during impacts around the interior compartment and occupants – in both front and rear crashes. In addition, rollover sensing is standard on both five- and seven-passenger XL7 vehicles. The technology uses sensors to proactively predict vehicle “tip up” on a flat road surface and applies brake force to the outside front and rear wheels in order to reduce lateral force in the vehicle. The unibody construction is a high-strength steel structure, incorporating full-length frame rails and a safety cage in the middle into a single, welded unit. It also is designed with front and rear crush zones engineered to collapse in a controlled manner to help absorb crash energy while protecting the integrity of the occupant safety cage. The safety cage is reinforced with welded, tubular-section members that frame door openings and support the roof and steel members in the doors. The combination of single-piece door aperture and door beam reinforcements help resist side-impact intrusion. The all-new 2007 Suzuki XL7 is fitted with driver and passenger front airbags and side-curtain airbags. The XL7 also features a four-wheel anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Program® (ESP) (including traction control). In addition, the standard tire-pressure monitoring system continuously monitors critical tire pressures. ESP, which is standard equipment on all XL7 models, provides a technically sophisticated safety net for the driver. The system uses a yaw sensor, lateral accelerometer and steering angle sensor to monitor vehicle stability and driver inputs. Working with the standard ABS with EBD and traction control system (TCS), the system can apply individual brakes selectively to control oversteer and understeer as needed to help the driver maintain control on slippery surfaces or during emergency maneuvers. Being able to control any or all of the brakes allows the ESP system to provide maximum responsiveness, control and enhanced accident avoidance capabilities, although ESP is not a substitute for safe driving practices. The TCS uses brake and engine torque intervention to enhance traction during launch and acceleration on all road surfaces. If the ABS system detects impending wheel slip, it signals the powertrain Engine Control Unit (ECU) to adjust engine torque output accordingly. TCS also senses when one or more wheels spin faster than the vehicle speed and applies the brakes at that wheel or wheels. Working together, the two systems limit wheel spin and help maintain control and forward progress quickly and efficiently. Additional safety features include three-point seatbelts in all five- or seven-passenger seating positions, seatbelt pretensioners, seatbelt load limiters in front-seat retractors, child latching system that meets Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 225 requirements, five-mph bumpers and low front bumpers for optimum safety in the event of a collision with an automobile. Packages and Pricing Currently, Premium and Luxury trim levels are planned. Both will be offered with front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. Two Premium models will be available in five-passenger seating configuration and a third Premium model will be in seven-passenger configuration. Premium models can be outfitted with leather seating surfaces and sunroof. Two Luxury trim level models will be offered. Both will offer seven-passenger seating and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. One will offer standard front-wheel drive while the other will come with all-wheel drive. Additionally, a navigation system and sunroof will be offered. The navigation system and the DVD system cannot be packaged together, so Luxury models equipped with the navigation system will omit the DVD System. The Premium models feature 16-inch alloy wheels with P235/65R16 tires, while Luxury models are fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels and P235/60R17 tires. The 16-inch spare tire is carried in an outside-the-cabin underfloor area equipped with a hoist system. Current projections call for 50 percent sales of front-wheel-drive and 50 percent sales of all-wheel-drive models. While prices will not be set until the vehicle goes on sale in the fourth quarter of 2006, the manufacturer’s suggested retail price is expected to range from $23,000 to $29,000. Source: Suzuki Media

SUZUKI SX4 MAKES NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT AT 2006 NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTO SHOW New value-priced Suzuki sport X-over features standard all-wheel drive and excellent utility in a stylish package NEW YORK (April 13, 2006) – American Suzuki Motor Corporation (ASMC) today debuted the all-new 2007 Suzuki SX4 compact sport X-over (cross-over) hatchback in North America at the 2006 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS). Globally introduced at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, the name SX4 stands for (S)port (X)-over for (4) seasons of weather. The all-new SX4 features a handsome five-door hatchback design, a standard all-wheel-drive system with good stability and crisp handling characteristics. Consistent with Suzuki’s “Way of Life” brand philosophy, the new Suzuki SX4 was designed to deliver a bold attitude and performance for those who live an adventurous life. The vehicle combines numerous amenities with capable handling to offer an unexpected level of functionality at an affordable price. It also is the only vehicle in its class with standard all-wheel drive. “Suzuki designed the SX4 to be a year-round standout on the road under any driving condition,” said Osamu Honda, chief engineer, SX4. “The team approached the SX4 with the intention of creating an eye-catching vehicle that would grab the attention of customers who appreciate price, performance, features, styling and safety.” Powertrain Built in Japan, the SX4 features a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, DOHC engine matched to a five-speed manual transmission or a specially tuned available four-speed automatic transmission. Top track speed is 120 mph for the manual transmission model. Preliminary engine specifications and tuning figures indicate the 1995 cc engine will deliver 143 hp and 136 lb-ft of torque, while early fuel consumption estimates show the SX4 will deliver outstanding EPA fuel economy of 24 mpg/city and 30 mpg/highway. Dynamic Handling The body and chassis of the SX4 evolved from the award-winning Suzuki Swift design that helped Suzuki earn numerous awards worldwide, including many “Car of the Year” awards in Europe and Asia. The SX4 features a rigid steel unibody and well-managed chassis that was fine-tuned in Europe to provide good stability on the highway along with crisp and responsive handling and braking and minimal body roll. High body rigidity along with reinforced suspension mounts allow the front MacPherson struts and rear torsion beam suspension to work to their full potential. The combination of wide track and a large 16-inch wheel and tire package help make the ride even more solid. The SX4 features large four-wheel disc brakes that match the braking power with the engine potential. Standard All-Wheel Drive The well-equipped SX4 is configured as a five-door compact hatchback fitted with intelligent all-wheel drive (i-AWD). The i-AWD system operates in three modes via a console-mounted switch – 2WD mode for maximum fuel economy on dry pavement; AWD Auto mode, which controls the drive power distribution ratio to the rear wheels in the range of 0-50 percent depending on available traction; and AWD Lock mode designed to facilitate escape in case of snow or mud with the drive power distribution ratio to the rear wheels in the range of 30-50 percent. When the vehicle reaches 36 mph in AWD Lock mode the system automatically switches to AWD Auto mode. Bold Styling In concert with Italian designers to fuse the vitality of sport utility vehicles with the elegance of passenger cars, Suzuki created a versatile car that delivers a poise and presence far beyond the SX4’s compact size. Using a simple, elegant and flowing form that sits atop a purposeful, dynamic and substantial underlying structure, the SX4 looks as if it is moving even when standing still. The body features a low, rising waistline and large, triangular-shaped windows forward of the front doors, giving the SX4 a sporty wedge shape indicative of its outstanding dynamic performance. The wide track and overfender design also adds to the appearance of traction and dynamic performance. The design is pure Suzuki in form – exciting, multi-dimensional and playful. Amenity-filled Interior The practical, X-over design continues inside the SX4. Curves and smooth forms gently wrap around the driver and passengers, while circular motifs and a flowing center panel provide indications of the car’s dynamic performance and suitability to active lifestyles. There is a quality look and feel to the materials and fabrics. The dark, two-tone interior design features black cloth highlighted with metallic- colored accents and wedge-shaped motifs – the look is both refined and aggressive. The ergonomic design of the instrument panel and dashboard provides intuitive use of the meters and controls. The large three-ring instrument cluster is easy to read and provides the driver with key information at a glance. The handsome center stack contains a sophisticated audio system – standard AM/FM/MP3/CD with four speakers or AM/FM/MP3 in-dash six-disc CD changer with six speaker plus subwoofer system (Premium package) – along with climate knobs and other controls. It is a striking example of function and form. The large dials of the manual and available fully automatic climate control system make them easy to use. With seating for five, the SX4 offers both utility and style. The efficient interior dimensions provide the driver and passengers with comfort, and the exterior dimensions provide outstanding maneuverability for crowded city streets and parking areas. The roomy interior offers plenty of legroom and shoulder room, even for the rear-seat passengers. SX4 also features wide door openings and theater-style seating for the rear passengers. Practical rear split-folding seats offer 60/40 seating to allow for stowage of longer items. The second- row seats also can be tumbled forward for maximum cargo carrying ability. Luggage room is 9.5 cubic feet (270 liters VDA) and increases to 22.0 cubic feet (625 liters VDA) with the rear seats folded forward. In addition, there are many discreet storage compartments located throughout the cabin, and all the doors feature large pockets and bottle holders for added convenience. Safety Features The SX4 offers customers an extensive array of standard safety features. Active safety features include four-wheel disc brakes with an anti-lock brake system, which are standard with electronic brake-force distribution. In addition, Electronic Stability Program® (ESP) (including traction control)*, standard on the Premium package, generates compensating yaw moment in the event of rear-wheel or front-wheel slip to help the driver return the car to its intended path of travel. Passive safety equipment includes a safety-reinforced body with front and rear crush zones designed to help absorb impact energy. The unibody frame design directs much of the impact energy away from the reinforced cabin area. Six airbags are standard on the SX4: driver and front passenger front airbags; driver and front passenger side impact airbags; and side curtain airbags designed to provide additional protection for outboard front- and rear-seat passengers. In addition, the SX4 is fitted with front three-point seatbelts with pretensioners and force limiters, three-point emergency locking retractor rear seat belts, ISO FIX-compliant child seat anchors and a high-mounted stop lamp. The all-new 2007 Suzuki SX4 is scheduled to go on sale in the United States during the third quarter of 2006. Manufacturer suggested retail prices are expected to range from $15,000 to $18,000. 2007 Honda Element SC Prototype Emphasizes Style and Performance Production version to go on-sale this fall New York 04/13/2006 -- An all-new urban-oriented counterpart to the Honda Element will debut this fall with an exclusive sport suspension, larger wheels and tires, unique styling and special features like a carpeted interior and a center console, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today at the 2006 New York International Auto Show. With performance more than skin deep, the Element SC prototype rides 3-inches lower than stock with a sport suspension that delivers sports car-like handling. A front-to-rear aerodynamic body kit further lowers the vehicle's stance, supplementing the new vehicle's performance direction with a ground-hugging presence. High on sophistication, the Element SC smoothly stands out with exclusive features such as fully-painted exterior panels and trim pieces, projector-beam headlights and an aero-enhanced black grille. The interior further complements the city performance demeanor with a driver-oriented center console, copper hue instrument panel lighting backlit with LEDs, piano black trim and a carpeted floor. "The Element SC prototype is the city-dwelling, style-conscious brother of the original Element," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda. "Instead of features that accommodate outdoor sports and similar activities, the Element SC injects a new dimension of sophistication into the lineup that can best be characterized as 'night performer.'" The exterior styling expresses a sophisticated, performance-oriented attitude with SC-exclusive features that include projector beam headlights, custom front bumper, lowered suspension, large alloy wheels, custom grille and a slightly lowered roofline (trim effect). To match the outside, the exclusive interior takes on an entirely new personality with a center console that has enclosed storage areas ideal for mobile phones and MP3 players. Additional exclusive features include trim accents that correspond to the copper-colored illumination. The 2007 Element SC prototype has a 2.4-liter, DOHC, i-VTEC engine that benefits from a 10 horsepower increase over the 2006 Element, bringing the total to 166 horsepower (SAE net revised 8/04). The increase is achieved primarily through the addition of high-flow intake and exhaust systems and high-lift camshafts. Additional enhancements include drive-by-wire throttle control. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard, and the available automatic transmission has five forward gears instead of four. Fulfilling the goals of Honda's "Safety for Everyone" initiative introduced in 2003, all 2007 Elements will provide a core suite of standard safety equipment that goes beyond existing regulations and includes side curtain airbags, driver's side impact airbag, front passenger's side impact airbag, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and ABS. The 2007 Honda Element also introduces an Integrated Seat Belt System on the front seats that allows rear seat occupants to exit the vehicle without the need for a front occupant to disconnect his or her seatbelt. In place of the existing B-pillar, door-mounted shoulder strap, the new Integrated Seat Belt System shoulder strap originates from the top of the seat and helps to enhance vehicle ingress/egress convenience for rear passengers. The Element SC prototype features custom 21-inch cast aluminum alloy wheels, 245/35R21 high-performance custom tires, and 4-wheel disc brakes with large brake rotors and custom copper-appearance brake calipers. The combination of the sport-tuned suspension and aggressive wheel and tire package results in an urban utility vehicle that handles like a sports car. A production vehicle based on the Element SC prototype will go on sale this fall. Source: Honda Media Newsroom

Honda may cut production of Accord hybrid Slow sales due to consumers being uncertain about fuel savings, exec says Julie Jacobson / AP file Updated: 2:20 p.m. ET April 13, 2006 NEW YORK - Honda Motor Co. may cut production of the Honda Accord hybrid because sales have been so slow, Honda Executive Vice President Dick Colliver said Thursday at the New York Auto Show. Colliver was the second executive in as many days to question the direction of hybrid sales during media previews for the show, which opens to the public Friday. Nissan Motor Co. Chief Executive Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday that hybrid sales appear to be slowing down, something he has warned could happen as consumers decide whether hybrids are worth their additional cost. Colliver wouldn't give exact sales for the Accord hybrid, which went on sale in December 2004, but said they make up a tiny percentage of Honda's overall sales. Overall Accord sales were down 4 percent last year, according to Autodata Corp. "We've had to reevaluate our position," Colliver said. "It's having a hard time in the market." Colliver said a decision on the Accord will be made sometime this year. Not all hybrids are suffering. The Honda Insight hybrid saw sales jump 15 percent last year, and Colliver said sales of the Honda Civic hybrid remain strong. The company expects to sell 25,000 hybrid Civics this year, or 8 percent of its total Civic volume. Colliver said the problem with the Accord is that the hybrid system is paired with a V6 engine, compared to the smaller 4-cylinder engine in the Civic, and consumers aren't convinced it will offer them any fuel savings. Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus luxury division is betting that consumers eventually will adopt so-called performance hybrids like the Accord, which give vehicles a bigger engine with better fuel economy and lower emissions. The 2008 Lexus LS 600h, introduced at the New York show, is the first luxury vehicle to pair a powerful V-8 engine with a hybrid system. The combination gives the 600h the power of a 12-cylinder engine with the fuel efficiency of a smaller vehicle. Lexus said the sedan will have fuel economy ratings equal to or better than some mid-sized luxury sedans. But Colliver said he's not convinced consumers will embrace performance hybrids. "We're still looking at where's the best package for hybrids," Colliver said. "We're going to have to watch the market." Jack Nerad, editorial director of Kelley Blue Book, an auto information service, said he also expects consumers will be slow to adopt performance hybrids because they think of hybrids only as fuel savers. "The general public doesn't grasp there is such a thing as a performance hybrid," Nerad said. Hybrids made up 1.5 percent of new-car sales last year, up slightly from the year before, even though there were new models on the market, according to J.D. Power and Associates. Ford, GM, Mazda recall cars for safety problems Wed Apr 12, 7:16 PM ET Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F - news), General Motors Corp. (NYSE:GM - news) and Mazda Motor Corp. (7261.T) are recalling almost 35,000 cars for a range of defects, U.S. safety regulators said on Wednesday. Ford is recalling over 19,000 Mustang Cobras from the 2003 and 2004 model years because the accelerator pedal can stick on the floor carpeting in the car, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. The NHTSA said the accelerator problem could cause crashes when the pedal catches on a cutout area of the floor carpeting during sharp acceleration. Ford will install carpet "shields" to address the safety issue, the agency said. In addition, GM is recalling almost 13,000 Buick Lucerne and Cadillac DTS sedans because of faulty power steering hoses. The hoses on some of the 2006 models of those GM cars equipped with V8 engines are prone to separate and leak steering fluid, regulators said. That could cause drivers to loose steering power at low speeds or trigger engine fires. GM will replace the defective parts, the NHTSA said. Mazda is also recalling about 2,600 MX-5 Miatas from the 2006 model year because the driver-side front air bags are prone to dislodge a horn assembly from the steering wheel. The regulatory agency said that problem, which is prone to happen at very cold temperatures, could injure drivers. Mazda will replace the front air bags on the cars at risk for the problem, the NTSA said. Link: http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060412/bs_nm/...wN5bnN1YmNhdA--

I've never even heard of UTStarcom before. Here's a review of it: http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=2746 ...and the Treo: http://reviews.cnet.com/Palm_Treo_650_Spri...7-31201684.html I'd probably go for the Treo. It seems like the popular choice. They're both better than my phone, though.

I don't think that's true... The new SM5 is based on the the Altima's old FF-L platform.

THE NEW 2007 AUDI A4 AND S4 CABRIOLET NEW YORK - An enjoyable and sporty driving experience, superior and complex technology, classic and exciting styling, and luxury that even satisfies the demands made in the luxury class: Audi is presenting the new generation of a car that has become a classic – the A4 and S4 Cabriolet. The advent of a new model generation is evident at first glance: the open-top four-seater now has the single-frame grille that typifies the brand. The newly styled rear lights add a further visual touch. The car’s taut styling, clear surfaces and tension-packed shoulder line extending along the entire body are characteristic features of the A4/S4 Cabriolet. The car’s technology lives up to the promise made by its new styling: the A4 Cabriolet is being launched with two engines which are being offered for the Audi A4 Cabriolet for the very first time. FSI and turbo FSI technology represent the most advanced state of the art for gasoline engines. The sporty yet comfortable dynamic suspension converts the power delivered by these units into sheer driving pleasure – on every bend, on every mile of the journey. Innovative and highly sophisticated technologies are an integral part of practically all vehicle areas and components: the adaptive Bi-Xenon headlights are proof of this, as indeed is quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The quality of materials and workmanship in the interior are of a standard that need not fear comparison with the luxury class. The architecture of the driver’s area, especially the cockpit – a perfect synthesis of ergonomics, function and design – is pioneering. The design Self-assured in appearance: the striking single-frame grille and newly styled clear-glass headlights with their curving, emotional line give the new Audi A4 Cabriolet a completely new face. The trapezoidal shape of the single-frame grille is continued in the more prominent contours of the engine hood. The front end shows visible evidence of the new generation of the S4 Cabriolet. Like the S4 sedan, the Cabriolet features the S-specific grid pattern in the singleframe grille. The bumpers with large air inlets, the aluminium-look casings for the exterior mirrors, the redesigned rear lights and the four oval tailpipes are the distinguishing visual features of the S4 Cabriolet. Taut lines and clear surfaces that hold no secrets, coupled with a tension-packed shoulder line extending along the entire length of the body, produce a look that is simultaneously powerful and elegant. The rear end is distinguished by newly designed lights of clear-glass appearance which also emphasize the Cabriolet’s premium quality from behind. The new rear diffuser underscores the car’s sports character. The modern and innovatively designed interior fits in with the progressive look of the car’s exterior styling. The new-generation steering wheels provide an entirely new visual touch inside the A4/S4 Cabriolet. Their characteristic element is the airbag cover with its single-frame design. Door sill trims with aluminum inserts and numerous aluminum inlays are a standard feature of all new A4 and S4 Cabriolet versions. Inside, the S4 Cabriolet differs in appearance from its A4 brothers. The instrument cluster has the grey dials that are characteristic of S models and special needles. Power adjustable sports seats with leather upholstery further differentiate the S4 Cabriolet. Inlays in Walnut or Fine grain birch wood grey can be ordered. These are attributes that also emphasize the special exclusiveness and elegance of the interior of current A4 models. Almost all convertibles look good with the top down, but only a few are equally as attractive with the top up. The Audi A4 Cabriolet cuts an extremely fine figure both open and closed. The fully automatic, electro-hydraulic roof can be operated when driving at a speed of up to 19 mph – an advantageous feature that is not to be underestimated in the city, for example, where it is not always possible to stop suddenly. Thanks to its good thermal insulation and glass rear window, the Audi A4/S4 Cabriolet can also be used without restriction in the winter. As an option Audi also offers an acoustic roof, which goes even further in the direction of insulation. By using new fabrics with a greater material density, the noise level inside the cabin is reduced further, virtually matching that of the A4 sedan, even at highway speeds. Engines and transmissions Audi is now also offering two highly modern engines with FSI gasoline direct injection for the new A4 Cabriolet: the 3.2 FSI V6 and the turbocharged two-liter four-cylinder 2.0 TFSI. These combine high performance with a spontaneous response to every movement of the accelerator pedal and a peak-torque range at a high level. The 3.2 FSI V6 produces 255 hp at 6500 rpm, and 243 ft.-lbs. of torque at 3250 rpm. About 90 percent of the engines peak torque is available from 1900-5900 rpm, allowing for strong acceleration in any gear, at any speed. The 2.0 TFSI four-cylinder was the first engine to combine turbocharging and direct gasoline injection when it was initially launched. Producing 200 hp from 5100-6000 rpm, and 207 ft.-lbs. of torque between 1800-5000 rpm, the 2.0 TFSI is a marvel of power and efficiency. The Audi S4 Cabriolet is propelled by a 340 hp eight-cylinder engine. Its maximum power output is reached at 7,000 rpm. The 4.2-litre engine delivers a hefty 302 ft. lbs. of torque at 3,500 rpm. Thanks to such a superior power flow from the substantial displacement, this naturally aspirated engine acquires an air of supreme confidence. All three engines have been named to the Ward’s 10 Best Engines list in the last two years, a further testament to their advanced design and abilities. These three engines deliver their power to the road either via the front wheels or by means of quattro permanent four-wheel drive. Customers can choose from a continuously variable Multitronic transmission (2.0 TFSI FrontTrak), a six-speed manual with a 40:60 front to rear torque split (S4), and a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission (standard 2.0TFSI quattro and 3.2, option on S4). The chassis The set-up of the dynamic suspension system, with four-link front and self-tracking trapezoidal-link rear suspension, has been completely modified and numerous new components added. Audi’s chassis engineers have made extensive changes in the area of elastokinematics, and to the spring and shock absorber settings. The steering has been completely modified to give the driver greater precision, but also better feedback from the road when cruising. In connection with this, the engineers adopted several mountings and the dimensions of the front and rear shock absorbers from the Audi A6; the rear trapezoidal links and the front track rods originate from the S4 sedan. These modifications add up to a significantly higher level of agility and precise handling, combined with first-class ride comfort – all qualities which benefit drivers of the Audi A4 Cabriolet. This also applies to the brakes, the dimension and consequently performance of which have been adapted to suit the potential of the new engines. Equipment and trim The Audi A4/S4 Cabriolets offers a standard equipment list that sets a benchmark in the midsize class. Every new A4 Cabriolet, for example, comes with an electric roof and dual-zone automatic climate control, nine-speaker audio system, power one-touch windows, driver information display, cruise control, large ski sack, and numerous other features you’d expect to find in a luxury convertible. Safety is standard, not optional The Audi A4/S4 Cabriolet’s A-posts are reinforced very effectively by means of high-strength tubes and their optimised structure – an indispensable source of extra safety if the car should roll over. Sills with an optimised thickness and cross-section boost the occupant cell's strength and optimise occupant protection. High-strength tubes are also used in the seat structure, as a means of protecting the occupants in the event of a lateral collision. The doors in particular have to be designed with safety in mind. In conjunction with structural reinforcements in the sills and a strengthening cross-member below the rear seat, special impact absorbing beams in the doors help ensure a high standard of safety. At the car's rear end, the double rear panel improves the rigidity of the body. The comprehensive safety package contains seat belts with belt-force limiter and belt tensioner for all passengers, together with full-size front and side airbags. The side airbags integrated into the front seats are designed to protect the head and thorax. If the car should roll over, a roll-over protection system in the double rear bulkhead adds to the occupants' safety. In this case, two protective bars, controlled by sensors, are triggered behind the rear passengers within milliseconds. Together with the extremely rigid windscreen frame, they help to preserve survival space for all occupants if the car turns over. The standard electronic stabilization program ESP 8.0 with hydraulic brake assist provides for maximum active safety. All seats are equipped with three-point inertia-reel belts (the front belts have belt-force limiters and belt tensioners, plus a seat belt reminder for the driver) and head restraints. The safety equipment specification also includes a driver’s airbag activated in two stages and side airbags. Warranty The 2007 Audi A4 and S4 Cabriolets come with an outstanding combination of warranties and protection. This top-rated package includes: • Four-year/50,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty • 12-year limited warranty against corrosion perforation • 24-hour Roadside Assistance for four years provided by Road America (S4 pictured.) Turbocharged Acura RDX Debuts At 2006 New York Auto Show All-New Entry Premium SUV features Super Handling All-Wheel Drive New York 04/12/2006 The all-new 2007 Acura RDX Entry Premium SUV, made its production debut at the New York Auto Show today. RDX combines Acura's first-ever turbocharged engine with the breakthrough Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), for sports sedan-like handling in a SUV package. "The all-new RDX is an exciting entry to the Acura light truck lineup for 2007," said John Mendel, senior vice president, auto operations, "The RDX's innovative powertrain coupled with SH-AWD provides this SUV with excellent fuel economy and outstanding performance." The RDX is aimed at high-energy urbanites that spend the work week in the confines of the city, and then decompress on the weekends by getting away from it all. Regardless of where they go, these drivers expect the ultimate in responsiveness, control and adaptability. Built on a new global light truck platform, the RDX concept was first designed in California and then developed in Japan. Besides featuring precedent-setting engineering features including Acura's first turbocharged and intercooled engine and the first adaptation of a SH-AWD system to an SUV, the RDX also offers Acura's first standard 18-inch wheels and tires. True to form for Acura, the RDX incorporates a class-leading array of sophisticated electronic technologies that are seamlessly integrated to keep its passengers informed, entertained and in touch. The RDX also introduces new safety technologies based on the fundamentals of Acura's "Safety Through Innovation" initiative. As Acura's first Entry Premium SUV, the RDX was the focal point of the development of a special powertrain that would blend 4-cylinder efficiency and 6-cylinder power. The ideal solution came in the form of an innovative new variable flow turbo (VFT) that delivers an unusually broad powerband with little or no lag in throttle response. The RDX is equipped with an all-new 2.3-liter DOHC 16-valve in-line four-cylinder engine with i-VTEC valve control that combines Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) with Variable Timing Control (VTC). With the variable flow turbo working in concert with i-VTEC, the RDX delivers strong power and torque, excellent fuel economy and very low emissions. Rated output for the RDX engine is 240 horsepower SAE net* at 6000 rpm. In terms of torque, the RDX has the highest output of any engine in the Acura lineup, with 260 lbs.-ft. of torque SAE net* at 4500 rpm. The RDX is expected to return an EPA-estimated 19/24** City/Highway mileage, while meeting strict CARB LEV-2 ULEV and EPA Tier-2 Bin-5 emissions standards. A 5-speed automatic transmission with Sequential SportShift is standard. The electronically controlled drive-by-wire throttle and transmission work together to execute shifts, resulting in exceptionally quick and smooth gear changes. The transmission can function as a conventional automatic transmission or, at the driver's option, can be shifted manually via steering-wheel-mounted paddles. SH-AWD is standard in the RDX to maximize available traction while improving handling balance and responsiveness. SH-AWD is Acura's patented all-wheel drive system that distributes the optimum amount of torque not only between the front and rear axles but also between the left and right rear wheels. The system's direct yaw control helps reduce understeer to enhance steering accuracy and add to total cornering power. Responsive handling is further aided by fully independent front and rear suspensions. The MacPherson strut front and trailing arm-type multilink rear systems are tuned for compliant control, and assisted with front and rear anti-roll bars for flatter cornering. Standard Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA®) with traction control further enhances controllability and grip. The RDX exterior styling further emphasizes the SUV's sporty athleticism. It has a taut, muscular presence with standard 18-inch wheels and tires that work together with large wheel arches, aggressively raked body sides, a steeply raked windscreen and a short rear overhang. A unique rear hatch, finished with a replaceable panel to reduce the cost of accident repair, allows the rear of the body to smoothly transition to the rear bumper. This permits a more custom look and also eases the act of loading and unloading cargo. Inside the RDX, the front-seats feature a high "eye point" that provides a confident field of view. The 3-passenger rear seat has a 60/40 split-folding capability and, when folded flat, significantly expands the load area and increases the cargo volume to 60.6 cubic feet of storage. There are multiple interior storage compartments positioned throughout the interior, including a large (and lockable) dual-level center console located conveniently between the front seats that can securely accommodate a briefcase. The RDX features an array of electronic features that set it apart from the competition. These include a dual-zone automatic climate control system, a Multi-Information Display (MID), and LED backlit gauges with progressive illumination. Also standard is an impressive 360-watt 7-speaker Acura Premium Sound System with a multi-format 6-disc changer, AM/FM tuner, XM® Satellite Radio, and the convenience of an MP3/auxiliary input jack for easily connecting audio devices such as an iPod. Just one optional package is offered on the RDX. The Technology Package heightens the RDX's appeal to technology-savvy customers with a range of advanced features. The centerpiece is a 10-speaker Acura/ELS Surround Premium Sound System designed by legendary recording engineer Elliott Scheiner. When playing DVD-Audio discs (DVD-A), this advanced 410-watt system delivers eight discreet audio channels (instead of the usual two) to create an uncannily accurate listening experience. With its multi-format 6-disc DVD-A changer, AM/FM tuner and XM® Satellite Radio, the system is as versatile as it is powerful. The Technology Package also includes several information and communications such as HandsFreeLink and the Acura Navigation system. HandFreeLink is a wireless telephone interface that is designed to work with many Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones (sold separately). In addition, the AcuraLink Satellite Communication System with Real Time Traffic allows for 2-way communication between Acura and the vehicle, providing customers with the latest information specific to their vehicle. The Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition can display up-to-the-minute traffic information including flow, accidents, construction and weather conditions on freeways in 31 major metro areas (where available). When the transmission is placed in reverse, the Navigation screen displays the image from a rearview camera to make parking easier. In addition, the AcuraLink Satellite Communication System with Real Time Traffic allows for 2-way communication between Acura and the vehicle, providing customers with the latest information specific to their vehicle. Technological leadership also extends to safety engineering. The RDX's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure substantially contributes to passenger safety. ACE distributes collision loads through the body structure, leaving the passenger cabin more intact for improved occupant protection. Specially designed frame members make the RDX more compatible with smaller vehicles in the event of a vehicle-to-vehicle frontal collision. Likewise, a specially engineered hood and other components help reduce the chances of pedestrian injury in the event of a collision with the vehicle. Inside the RDX is a full complement of passive safety features. Key technologies include the latest generation of dual-stage, dual-threshold airbags for the driver and front passenger, plus side airbags for the driver and front passenger and side curtain airbags with a rollover sensor for all outboard occupants. Child-seat mounting systems, LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), allow the quick and secure installation of a child seats. The RDX will be assembled in Marysville, Ohio, on the same line as the Acura TL sedan. It is the first Acura light truck to come from the facility. Like all Acura models, the 2007 RDX is covered by a comprehensive 4-year/50,000 mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty and a 6-year/70,000 miles powertrain limited warranty. Additional ownership benefits include Acura Total Luxury Care (TLC), which provides free 24-hour roadside assistance, concierge service and trip routing. Source: Honda Media Newsroom

Scion Unveils FUSE Sports Coupe Concept At 2006 New York International Auto Show 04/12/2006 New York April 12, 2006 - New York - Scion, from Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc., unveiled the all-new FUSE Sports Coupe Concept vehicle at a press conference today at the 2006 New York Auto International Show. Developed by Calty Design Research, Toyota's North American design studio located in Newport Beach, Calif. and Scion's Advanced Product Strategy Team, and built by Five Axis of Huntington Beach, Calif., the all-new FUSE was designed to be the new Scion sports coupe icon. Its goal was to push the limits of a coupe concept by combining entertainment, digital technology, and versatility into one sinister looking package. Most importantly, its styling makes a visual statement about its intention to expand the performance envelope among affordable, entry-level sport coupes. "The idea of the all-new FUSE Sports Coupe is a reflection of the boundless limits and creative envelope that embodies all the vital personalization components of a Scion product," said Mark Templin, Scion vice president. "Since the launch of Scion three years ago, designers have learned a great deal about what inspires and motivates Scion buyers through its unique vehicle lineup and instilled them into the FUSE." The exterior of the FUSE was the conception of Calty designers Alex Shen and Bob Mochizuki, who were determined to create a strong performance statement. Inspiration came from the "HAKO" super GT racing cars of Japan, commonly known as the JGTC series. From the side, the FUSE has a low, aggressive stance with a race helmet-inspired wraparound window that provides a panoramic view. The visor-like wraparound windshield is balanced by a strong C-pillar, adding a sense of security and protection. At first glance, the menacing presence and dark undertones of the FUSE subtly hint there is more than meets the eye. The front of the FUSE glares at you with slim, high-mounted, deep-set headlamps communicating a serious and aggressive attitude. A massive rectangular air intake hints at potential for a large intercooler. From the back, wide-body rear flares span the entire rear mass, encasing deep-set vertical taillamps. The dual exhaust also serves as fog and reverse lamps as lighting encircles each exhaust tip. Wheels are 20-inch custom-machined with LED's on the end of each spoke, which illuminate as turn indicators. On top, two horizontal glass panels run the length of the roof, and slide open in both directions offering all occupants access to a personal sunroof. The rear window tapers down to a speed-activated spoiler. True to the Scion tradition, the FUSE is equipped with extreme levels of personalization accessories. Headlights and fog lamps can be programmed to illuminate in various colors. Videos or images can be downloaded and viewed on a concealed LCD screen behind the front badge. And then there is the interior. Calty interior designers Alan Schneider and Ichirou Mukai used the long wheelbase and high beltline of the FUSE to help create the interior theme, which revolves around providing the driver with an intense driving environment and occupants an intimate atmosphere. The activation of a small key-shaped sensor unhinges butterfly doors that open to reveal an interior that merges technology, function and racing inspired elements in an asymmetrical pentagon where the driver is positioned at the apex of the surround. The influence of the "racing tub" in the overall design is obvious. It provides a unique contrast that highlights the floating technical elements of the interior. A drive-by-wire steering interface combines influences from race cars and video game controllers in one innovative driver module. A media station that runs the length of the dash is the focal point of the cabin. Passengers can watch movies, play video games, or do both, with dual display 10.5-inch monitors. The FUSE interior concept is referred to as "one plus stuff." The design focuses on the driver by offering surprising versatility in the form of three interior arrangements: video, driving and cargo configurations. In its video mode, the front passenger seat folds flat and serves as a table, or footrest. Occupants can utilize video screens or take advantage of wireless fidelity (Wi-Fi) connectivity and instant message their friends. In driving mode, the video screens turn off and a multi-informational display is used for driver information. Utility is maximized in a cargo mode where the front passenger seat and rear seats fold down to form a flat surface. And, multi-functioning rear cargo access allows stowage of larger items. The FUSE cabin seats four comfortably, however when the car is parked, additional room is available with a tailgate that converts to provide outdoor seating. A sweep of the foot over an infrared sensor located on the lip of the rear bumper opens the rear tailgate and sliding hatch, allowing the tailgate to drop down into a curb-high bench. This surprising seating arrangement is paired with rear foldout speakers for an unexpected social environment. Enhancing the social scene is a detachable drink cooler with a retractable handle, which is integrated into the rear center console. Additional features include subtle accent lighting on the seats, doors and overhead lining. Deeply contoured seats are upholstered with soft-to-the-touch "Mythos" fabric that wraps around passengers for maximum comfort. Finally, audio, video and HVAC systems are easily controlled by a "vehicle system/communication interface" touch control board that is similar in appearance to a telephone keypad. "The FUSE is a styling exercise that presents a discussion starting point for Scion owners and other Gen Y consumers with an eye towards a versatile sports coupe," said Templin. "Like previous Scion concepts, the FUSE delivers a unique statement about what the Scion brand is all about and where it is headed."
