In September 2009, I road tripped along the Illinois portion of the Lincoln Highway and Route 66 from Illinois to California. That trip increased my awareness of "old routes" in general, including others like the Dixie Highway and US Route 6. Last year's journey also increased my awareness of the "road ahead". Whether the road is "less traveled" or filled with traffic, looking ahead is most-often fun, in more ways than one. Around the Elgin area, I "exercise" my Monte Carlos on the same "old" roads west of Elgin, including US Route 20: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_20 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_20_in_Illinois Some of those roads, particularly US Route 20, are different roads in different places. In this shot west of Starks IL, US Route 20 is a "rural" road: Meanwhile, in Elgin, US Route 20 is a 4-lane bypass highway... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elgin_Bypass ...as evidenced in this shot heading east in Elgin: Beyond that line of trees on the right hand side is the Elgin Softball Complex where my bro-in-law's Tuesday team and my Dad's Friday team play. Starting in 2008, I've researched new "routes"...or variations of paths I've taken before. The more I've driven the same roads, the more I actually NOTICE, including how... ...different things are spotted when traveling one direction on a road vs. the other direction on the same road [the crest of a hill in one direction might reveal a spectacular site (especially at sunset or sunrise), while the crest of that same hill going the other direction may only reveal a dilapidated old barn hidden among a grove of trees] (and) ...routes interconnect/intersect with others, such as IL RT 47 crossing several major cross-country routes, including US Route 20, The Lincoln Highway, US Route 6 and famed US Route 66. Thus, this year (2010), I started taking pics of the "road ahead" around here, similar to what I took along Route 66, except in some cases I added the element of "perspective". I took one pic in each direction, showing how the pathway looks different going one way versus traveling the other. Three examples.... #1 ... Simple question: What were you doing when your car was new? My current family... 1972: I was a year away from making my earthly debut. 1976: I was 3 years old. I welcomed my parents' first Monte Carlo to the family, a 1976 model that I "claimed" as "mine" in later years. I was also a year away from my first open heart surgery. 1979: I welcomed my baby sister to the world. 1981: I finished first grade in the spring; started second grade in the fall. 1987: I was in middle school ... and had to say goodbye to my best friend who died of an asthma attack. Former members... 1988: I finished middle school and entered the world of High School. I first started thinking about having one of every single YEAR of the Monte Carlo. I later re-thought that ... with the goal of one of each generation, which I completed March 2002. 1997: I started my first full-time job, after graduating from college a year earlier. I also put my '79 MC Landau (first car) away for the winter and bought a new "daily driver". 2000: I was one Monte Carlo away from completing the family, having bought the '81 MC SC from my parents December 1999 and the '76 MC Landau a year before that; I've never bought a Monte Carlo brand new. I was still working at the same company, but had switched jobs in late 1999, about the same time I bought the 2000 vehicle. Health wise, I was (unbeknownst to me at the time) 3 years away from my 3rd open heart surgery. *nods* You are welcome. Nashville is my favorite city, so this is particularly notable for me.... Keep in mind, though ... that MOST of the flooding was in the greater downtown area. Many places (including where some friends live virtually "across the street", Briley Parkway, from the Opryland Hotel) are virtually unscathed. Well, if you can MAKE time to visit the Corvette museum ... DO. Paducah is a good town, too. I drive through there when I'm en route to Big Sandy TN. In mid-June, events dictated that my 1979 Caprice Classic and 1987 Monte Carlo LS/CL were at the house at the same time. The CC was parked along the street curb, and the MC was in the driveway. As my sister and nephew left, my nephew pointed to my CC and said, "Cahr....Cort cahr". My sister replied, "Yes." Then, she turned and pointed at the MC, "...and that is Uncle Cort's car, too!" My nephew looked at the MC, tilted his head, looked at his Mom, then looked back at the MC, pointed at it and said, somewhat hesitantly, "Cahr....Cort cahr." Since then, he recognizes either the CC or the '87 MC as my car. Course ... just wait until he sees the rest of my Monte Carlos.........LOL! Given the list of states you noted you are traveling through, I'm guessing you will be rolling through TN on I-24, correct? If so ... you might consider stopping in the Clarksville TN area (northwest of Nashville) or the Smyrna/Murfreesboro TN area (southeast of Nashville). I would classify the flooding in Nashville similar to the flooding you had 2 years ago. All of my favorite Nashville TN places (Cooter's Garage, Opryland Hotel, Grand Ole Opry, WSM studios, Hard Rock Cafe, etc.) had major flood waters.... O'Charley's ... they have the BEST rolls, imho . As for places to see ... depends on how much time you have....
