The ONLY reason I attended Spiedie Fest (Binghamton NY) with the NYMCC is to receive the "Long Distance Award" (I traveled from IL to NY). When I made my reservations months prior to the trip, the person at the hotel could NOT believe I would travel all the way to NY for an event...! My "Long Distance Award" finally arrived Friday, September 17; I snapped pics of it Saturday, 09/18/2010, a day before my birthday... ...front: ...back: If you believe the award was the ONLY reason I traveled to Binghamton NY, well, I have some ocean front property in Arizona for you...! I can. In 2001, my grandparents celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. At that celebration was one of my grandmother's HS friends ... who happened to drive her 1979 Monte Carlo to the events that day. Apparently, my interest in her car caught her attention enough that she asked my grandmother for my address. Two years later, about a year after my grandmother's death and a few months after I purchased my '87 MC LS/CL as my 5th MC, I got a letter in the mail from my grandmother's HS friend asking if I wanted to buy her car. She had to sell it. As it turned out, her son decided he wanted the car after all, so I never had the chance to buy it. But, I was shocked that she remembered that I wanted the car. Amen. It's like being a Chicago Cubs fan. They CLAIM to have a new owner (they don't) and they still are sponsored by Ch#$r%*et. You can't have a winning team when you start with that combination. With a few minor exceptions, the Camaro being one (though I can't afford it), I'm not all that excited about GM vehicles, which is very frustrating. On the one hand, it's good ... since I don't need/want a new car. Yet, on the other hand, it's sad because if I DID want/need a new car (which I kinda do), I wouldn't have anything to get.... *shrugs* I'd love fall if winter (salt/cold/ice) didn't follow so closely behind it...lol. Yes, I'm ALREADY looking to my 2011 road trip. While I know about 2 car shows the last weekend of June 2011 in PA (GM Nationals, Carlisle; MC Nationals, York)...and the irony of the 2 shows being so close together with many people I know attending at least 1 of the 2 shows, it does not appear (at this point) that I will be able to go, due to lack of vacation time. Instead, since I have yet to travel to the northwest section of the United States during any of my road trips, that is where I'm heading.... After seeing the New York Monte Carlo Club in action at their August gathering (Spiedie Fest, Binghamton NY) during my Nor'Easter Trek road trip, I'm not willing to "give up" on Chicagoland events. It seems, sometimes, that when we get together, people say, "We should do this more often" ... but that rarely happens. Perhaps it is time we make "more often" happen. After all, getting together with people IS the POINT.... While the MidSummer Chitown Gathering is done after 3 years due to fast-dwindling attendance (65 in 2008, 20 in 2009, 16 in 2010), let's try something different. On the way back, instead of pulling into their driveway, he turned into the grassy field across the street, parked the Blazer and asked me if I wanted to drive. Naturally, I did. I THOUGHT that one looked familiar. I remember seeing that one on the news after it happened. As for the rest of them ... wow. Definitely eye openers ... and makes you hope that people will see it and remember that driving needs to be taken VERY seriously. They also remind me of this video: Earlier this week, one of those big/heavy/short work trucks almost rear ended my Caprice Classic while I was en route to work. I had stopped on IL RT 58, where it NORMALLY backs up ... and heard screeching tires behind me. I glanced in my rear view mirror and was absolutely horrified to see the big truck headed right for me. Tough for me to believe that my awesome 2010 road trip... ...is done. If I could be on the road 24/7/365, I would jump on that chance/opportunity in a heartbeat! In the meantime, it is time to start planning my 2011 road trip, most-likely via US Route 66 and into the northwest United States (Oregon, Washington, the Dakotas, Minnesota, etc.). I'm also considering a couple mini road trips yet in 2010, in mid September (place TBD) and in November, during Thanksgiving weekend, to TN. As for my Nor'Easter Trek road trip, I had a GREAT time traveling through IL, IN, MI, OH, PA, NY, MA, NH, MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, PA, OH, IN, and IL, from Wednesday, August 4 to Sunday, August 15, 2010, meeting up with wonderful people along the way. Frustratingly, several pics were way too out of focus to keep; however, I opted to keep some "out of focus" pictures. * The start of my trip (Wednesday, August 4) was delayed by a couple hours due to a nail in the tire of my rental 2010 Dodge Charger SXT. * My visit to the oldest Major League ballpark (Fenway Park, Boston MA) came on the night of the anniversary of the first night game (08/08/1988) at the second oldest ballbark, Chicago's Wrigley Field. * Jan of the Adult Congenital Heart Association has a house in Randolph MA that is nearly identical to the house of a relative, Barb, in Hollsopple PA. When I entered Jan's house, I told her where rooms were, without even seeing the house! Yes, I took pictures of BOTH houses during this trip. * I was able to travel some stretches of famous 2-lane roads along the way, including US Route 6, US Route 20, and US Route 30/The Lincoln Highway, and enjoyed those jaunts very much. My September 2009 trip along US Route 66 (Illinois to California) increased my appreciation for the "old 2 lanes" over the "superslabs". Even so, those "evil superslabs" offer some awesome sights/scenery and a quicker alternative if time is of the essence. For instance, several scenic pictures I took this trip were along "superslabs" and, had I taken portions of US Route 20 and US Route 6 west across Indiana en route home, I would not have made it home in time to drive all of my Monte Carlos that same evening (Sunday, August 15). * Areas driven through/by: IN ... Me, too! Snapped a pic of an abandoned house this past Sunday ... and included it with my road trip pics...lol. I saw PLENTY of abandoned places when I traveled Route 66 last year (September 2009)..... As for THIS $35M house ... I like the openness of it, in terms of natural lighting.
