  5. It's funny how 0.3 seconds is "similar performance" when the Mercedes is behind, ....I'll remember that every time you post about a Cadillac 0-60. I've driven the diesel GL and it has a scary amount of turbo lag.... and I do mean it actually scared me when I tried to make a left turn in traffic and got no response from the engine room.
  6. The 1.4 in the Encore is tamed somewhat by the active noise cancellation that comes standard in all Encores. There is a big difference in noise compared to the Trax. Yes, the AWD in the Encore is pretty efficient, but on the other side of the coin is how well the Encore's AWD system performs in the bad stuff. In that regard, it has one of the best AWD systems outside of a Subaru as it always starts in 50/50 front/rear 4-Wheel Drive and then dials back to FWD once the car decides the coast is clear. I can get up my steep driveway in unshoveled snow. But you don't need to take just my word for it. Over at Cars.com, the Encore got out of snow better than a Jeep Cherokee.
  7. The new 1.4T is expected to beat the current 1.4T in EPA ratings. Adding Direct Injection and Start/Stop will do that.
  8. Indeed, but in this case, the discussion over the really cheap prices on the Leaf. If you could really grab one for $11k - $12k, it would make an excellent low cost EV as a second car for most folks who fit this type of commuting profile. The Bolt will cost 3 times that.
  9. The AWD is rated for 23/30/26. I've never seen it drop below 25 in our combined driving. The FWD is rated for 25/33/28. As I get 33 highway in my AWD sometimes, I'd probably get at least 35 in a FWD. https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=35644&id=35642

  14. Very true, but they are a cheap ride if you can get someone to buy it for you on a fleet purchase with said discounts. But is the $11K dollar price worth a car that goes about 60-65 miles per charge? Nisan Leaf range is 80 - 100 miles per charge. My partner could drive to and from work twice before needing a recharge. I could go four times and I have chargers in my work garage. For a daily commuter with a predictable route, the leaf would make a great second car. Yeah, my parents could rock one of these. They both work 3-3.25 miles from work. They could drive it all week just to and from work and never even need to charge it. And 100 miles of range really would work for myself 99% of the time. It's that 1% of time that is an issue that we're just so accustomed to not having to deal with it's pretty crazy. Most households are two car households these days. My household has more cars than people.... If I didn't have a need for an SUV for my rental properties, I could totally get by with a Leaf for my daily commuting, my '81 Toronado for personal road trips. When I drive a trip for work, I nearly always take a rental car anyway because I don't want to put miles on my own car even if they are reimbursed.

  16. I kinda think we're comparing things wrong. Every year X number of new cars enters service and X number of old cars are taken out of service. The proper comparison isn't "Does a 2016 Model GS1234 have better fuel economy and emissions than a 2015 Model GS1234 and by how much?" what should be compared is "Does a 2016 Model GS1234 have better fuel economy and emissions than the car it replaced and by how much?" When someone finally junks their 1998 Durango with 290k miles and buys a new 2016 Durango, there is a huge increase in fuel economy and large decrease in emissions. That's what I think we should be looking at.
  17. I agree on basically all counts. It's not going to win any competitions against a FR-S (except straight line maybe), but once you learn to work with the Impala's inertia, you can actually use it to drive very spiritedly.

    It could be wheel size, but even then, a smaller wheel would have its trailing edge further ahead of the base of the windshield, not further behind. This is what indicates wheelbase shrinkage to me.
  19. He likes to ignore that the Cadillac V6TT is faster than the BMW V8..... and that his pet brand Mercedes has phased out or will be phasing out V8s in nearly all of their non-AMG models.

    Well I guess one of my main fears for this car has come true. The wheelbase has shrunk substantially, and it looks to all have come from the front wheels. Even with the larger wheels on the concept, they were almost entirely ahead of the base of the windshield. This is a substantial factor into why the concept's proportions look so good in spite of being front wheel drive based. On this prototype, the wheels appear to have shifted rearward by a good 3 to 4 inches. The rear wheels seem to have just about stayed put... maybe moved forward very slightly in relation to the roof-line. I like that they've kept the overall look, but the side profile view with the wheelbase shrinkage really tempers my enthusiasm.
  21. Thanks... took it out for a quick run to the store.. I had test drove it with her, but had not gotten behind the wheel myself. Nice lil Whip. 1.4LTurbo actually moves this baby quite nice.. and thus far.. since Saturday at least.. when I hit the Average FE button it read 25.6 in mixed That's about the same for us in mixed driving too. Road trips we can tickle 33mpg.
  22. Jesus Tapdancing Christ! They invented THAT history too! Balth has already posted cars that came before Benz's glorious "invention". If people wanted "bold" looking, they wouldn't buy S-Classes, instead they'd buy the predator mouth LS. You are so focused on the Turbo-4, yet it will most likely keep pace with any of the 6-cylinders offered by the competition and the 6-cylinders will keep pace with the base V8s from the competition.
