Honda Readies Their Ford SYNC Competitor

While most automakers like Ford, Toyota, and General Motors have been putting a larger focus on infotainment systems, Honda has been playing it safe.

Compared to the current crop of infotainment systems, Honda's system shows its age. The navigation and audio sources are somewhat severely dated. That will be changing for 2013.

Wired's Autopia reports that Honda is readying a new infotainment system called Hondalink that will first appear in the Fit EV, due out sometime in July. After the Fit EV, HondaLink will be in the new 2013 Accord. Honda representatives say they don't know if the system will utilize a cellular modem or work through a smartphone. This is due to Honda moving many of its connected services away from satellite data.

Honda's first move of connected services was at this year's Consumer Electronics Show, where Honda announced its partnership with Aha Radio. Aha Radio allows owners of Android and iOS devices to access thousands of streaming audio feeds that can be played on the head unit.

I still think Honda is making a mistake here by putting this into a limited group of cars, they should do their whole product line and get this going sooner rather than later. Role it out car by car, but plan to have it out to all cars within 6 months.

I'm interested to see how well they do. Honda's in a precarious position of potentially having its brand new product being a generation behind the competition.

Very true, if they do not move the needle, I think they will loose customers in numbers.

    • It seems that either your music collection ends or Bluetooth derails, but other songs you "might" like start coming through on your auto's infotainment system.   I was taking my rental car back to the airport here some 1.5 hours away, this came on, and was this ever a blast from the past.  I have yet to look up what year it's from.  I thought I would share. . . . . Awaiting the response:  "Thanks for sharing."

    • Argh.  That's too bad.  An Aveo would have had an interference engine.  When I lost a timing chain in my '84 Cutlass Brougham coupe 3.8 V6 with 160,000 miles, I was at the end of a ramp in Vancouver WA, there was an almost imperceptible shudder, and silence.  A tow truck came.  At the shop, they pulled off all the pulleys, also threw in a new water pump, put on the new timing chain, and buttoned it up.  I later sold the car to a really cool Catholic high school senior from a very nice African-American family in Seattle.  When the father met me at the AAA to do the paperwork and drove off, the exhaust note was like that of a car with less than 50,000 miles.  But my beloved car went to nice folks and I hope it served them well.  Forget those high-tech ergonomic seats!  Those plush Brougham seats made it the most comfortable car I've ever owned.
    • 2004, only 89K. My wife works from home, my retired mother kept it for years as a back up car, she drove my dads car most of the time until my father passed. I got eight plus good years out of it. Timing belt snapped.
