Rumorpile: Volkswagen Ponders An Outback Competitor

Volkswagen has reportedly begun planning a competitor to the Subaru Outback. According to Automotive News, Volkswagen has given a green light to an AWD version of the next-gen Golf-based Jetta SportWagon. Sources say the company is deciding whether to make into Outback competitor with a higher ground clearance and body-cladding.

Now Volkswagen currently sells something like this in parts of the world. The Passat Alltrack takes a Passat wagon and raises the ride height and adds body cladding. Volkswagen showed a concept version of the Passat Alltrack at the 2012 New York Auto Show.

I know to some it might seem like there is no competition to the outback, but with all the various CUV AWD. Do they really think another station wagon is the right answer? I know Europe still like Station Wagons, but that is not in favor here in the US.
