Airbag for bench seat, center position

Recommended Posts

For years, the front center passenger in many bench-seat equipped cars and trucks has lacked the protection of an airbag, or even a shoulder belt and head restraint.

Which current vehicles have an airbag for the front center passenger?

I remember seeing Ads and commercials from Cadillac for the Deville back in the late 1990's with Airbags up front accommodating three passengers (Passenger airbag expanded across both middle and front passenger seats.) I have to assume the DTS & Lucerne still support this technology. Outside of those two, they must be trucks.

I immediately thought of DTS/Deville, but the question seems to imply an airbag that is exclusively for the center passenger as opposed to a large one that is shared with the front passenger.

Nobody makes a car or truck with a third center-mounted airbag. There are so few models on the market today that have seatbelts for a third front-seat passenger that I'm sure no supplier has ever been asked to come up with such an item. I do, however, remember the advertising mentioned by VenSeattle about the Cadillac Deville with the over-sized passenger-side airbag. That has to be the only case that I'm aware of where the airbags accomodate a third person.

that oversized passenger airbag already mentioned was called the "airbank system" and it was used on the Fleetwood and Deville in the mid nineties. I also recall it listed on the specs of the '97 (and assuming 98/99) Grand Prix as included with the no-cost bench seat option on the SE sedans (I miss the days of the no-cost bench option). Don't know if GM used/uses it in other models and just didn't advertise it as such, or not.
