I'd disagree. The current-gen Astra in profile closely resembles the 4th-gen 1997-2003 car. This new one looks more like the the 3rd-gen 1991-1997 Astra in profile. Furthermore, the front quarterlights by the A-pillar are very reminiscent of the Peugeot 308.

it's definitely in keeping with the insignia. too conservative especially relative to this current generation and where the market is now going. what happened to the extreme lines and cruves and smooth surfaces of the flextreme, now that would make a good saturn astra.

in its current form it may be too extreme, but with production headlamps, it could point to astra, notice the same backwards upkick on the door of the insignia

the rendering from the first post could point to forthcoming astra, but man it was seriously productionized and blandified.

You could say that about any generation of Astra. All that's remotely similar between the sixth and fifth generation cars are the bumpers. The passenger cell is substantially different, apeing the likes of the Peugeot 308 and VW Golf Plus.

In Europe, car design has never aspired to the Japanese; in fact the situation quite the reverse. Many Japanese marques either design and engineer (such as the latest Mitsubishi Lancer) or design/engineer/build (such as the Toyota Auris) in Europe to emulate and more effectively compete with the European mainstream. The Focus, Golf, 308 and Astra are the four biggest C-segment European rivals in the biggest European market segment, and the Japanese have long been keen to muscle in on the action.
