Getting into the Red

As you guys know, I purchased my red '98 Tahoe 2-door Z71 to replace the ROPOS plow truck and my green '95 Tahoe 2-door. Green isn't on the market yet, but the ROPOS is gone so I am starting to optimize Mr. Red.

Just doing damage control mostly at this point since all sorts of little problems have cropped-up since the purchase. But, there are other plans in the works.

Today I replaced the auto 4WD dash switch (known for going bad) which quit on me after plowing here for the first time the other day.

I also ordered a new window/door lock switch to replace the current one which fails intermittently (and locked me out of the vehicle capping a really bad day not long after the purchase).

There are other annoying items on my list as well, but I've already started to get some upgrades into the plan.

- I've eliminated the DRLs: Really hate these things as they are the early type that uses the low beams in the headlights, and they create too much electrical draw when plowing in daylight.

- Next week I plan to have the dealer crank up the stiffness/ride height of the front torsion bars to counter the weight of the plow.

- I ordered a 140 Amp alternator so the electrical system can better keep up with the demands of the plow.

Thinking about some other upgrades too, but first I want to attack the list of stuff that isn't up to par. I'll post here as I go, and add pics when they make sense.

Couple of minor setbacks today.

The 140 AMP alternator is physically too large, so I had to order a 155 AMP that is plug and play for the Tahoe. Bit more expensive, and I'll have to wait a bit for it, but should be better overall.

Also the rear wiper blade that NAPA lists will not mount, so they are getting me an Anco.

I went to install the new alternator and discovered that the tensioner has lost it's spring - so I left well enough alone for the recent snowstorm. While plowing, a few other deficiencies made themselves known. First, I have a not so pleasant noise coming from the front left when in 4WD (I suspect the CV). Not something I want to wait on, so this will be checked out asap. The other thing, is the fact that the truck just runs too hot with the plow on - probably needs a radiator. It is no problem when the plow is off, but the decreased airflow with it on makes the problem appear.

Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a few days to address these things until the cash from the Jag sale/ my paycheck is in my hands.

Luckily, I can do much of the plowing with the Tahoe in 2WD and I can keep the temp down by increasing the angle of the plow as I drive around. Not ideal, but manageable for the short term.

Bummer to hear, I have to do the radiator on my daughter Durango. Cracked this winter and is a slow leak. Just keep refilling it for now till I can get to it on the weekend.
