  1. Houses on stilts are pretty common in the Florida Keys, remember them from 40 years ago growing up there. I saw a bunch built that way recently in the NC Outer Banks and in SC--Myrtle Beach, Garden City, Surfside Beach. The Outer Banks and coastal SC remind me so much of the Keys. (Have insomnia this morning.. up doing random tasks..checking server logs, filling out vote-by-mail ballot, looking at maps, watching hurricane coverage, etc..)

  2. If it had to be Texas, I much prefer that area. Somewhere I have a photo I took of some new houses going up near Clear Lake, east of NASA Houston Space Center and on water, but not quite at Galveston Bay. They were propping them up like this, and were using metal studs, joists, etc. Lightweight metal. That method comes and goes, it seems. It's damn moist down there, so that has to be addressed in how the metal is prepped ... and even cut. I sort of like this look. It says Sunbelt AND vacation.

  3. @G. David Felt Sorry David, but the plane on top would be the airplane from the Expendables movie. The second one in the franchise. It would be the Canadair CL 215. A waterbomber that fights fires. My dad worked at Canadair for 40 years. Now Canadair is under the Bombardier Aerospace name. And he worked on the CL 215 both in production and later the head engineer in quality control. The airplane I posted earlier today is the Martin Mars. Another water bomber and it took its final flight this summer. It landed on a lake in British Columbia somewheres to be retired in a museum there. At least I think that is the plan. That particular plane and the models themselves are no longer flying. But the Bombardier CL 215 became the CL 415 and then Bombardier Aerospace sold the rights to a company named Viking to which they will continue on building them as the Viking 515 with new modern avionics in. As many countries fly it to fight their forest fires. The CL 215 was updated to the 415 in the 1980s with then modern avionics but the 515 will have modern modern 2020s avionics. The Cl 215 is a design from the 1930s. It had the Canso PBY as inspiration and a mentor. In the first movie, the airplane was a Grumman HU-16 Albatross.

  6. A friend moved from Seattle to Texas, Bayou Vista which is right next to Galveston. Has parents that have Dementia so moved to care for them. Bought a new house on the water. Was surprised as the house is built on Galvanized pilings into the bed rock and the stairs take you up 20 feet to the front door so there is nothing to flood or get damaged. I cannot seem to quickly find the picture of their house, but it is like this one that came up on the web. Nice Home but clearly built to handle water coming in from the Hurricanes. All homes need to be built this way to handle the 100 yr storm as you stated.

  7. This is a weird guy with a strange voice. I didn't look up his info. Where is he from? Some people make a living off of astrology because people either read those columns or consult with them, like they would a fortune teller or palm reader. I'm only on board with the part of mine that says we are travelers and likely to have a broad assortment of friends, and that it would include foreign ones! I don't know if I find them or they find me. I once worked with someone I shared a birthday with. We got along socially, like going to lunch and to b.s. Then, they put us on a project together and it was a "Felix and Oscar" nightmare and we no longer gelled. Three guesses as to which one I was and the first two don't count.

  8. It's a combination of a lot of things, really. The southern part builds with concrete masonry units. The northern part frames in wood. The southern part has homes on slabs. The beachfront areas up north - expensive ones on the Panhandle, for example - raise the homes up on piers or pylons, but it's still wood framing above. It should all be designed with that 100 year event in mind if close enough to the coast. Still, with the storm surge, people need to leave.

  9. Insane. Milton made landfall at Siesta Key in Sarasota County as a 3. It was forecast to come in between Tampa Bay and Port Charlotte. I forgot the strength of the previous ones that recently hit the southwest coast of FL. So much preparation was needed. I saw a clip on evacuating the animals from the Tampa Zoo. I'm sad for those who didn't make it out. They mentioned that a plane carrying evacuees crashed. It's working its way northeasterly across the peninsular state.

  10. Interesting at the four minute mark, they talk about why Electric cars are better for beating a hurricane. My niece and her father have decided to say put right in the path of this. Bunch of family in Florida. My hope is that they are okay. My good friend greg in Tampa had 3 foot of water in his house with the first storm, my fitness coach had her house damaged heavily also. It's gonna take some time to rebuild from all of this. Chris More mellow female vocalist goodness...
