  1. What are you smoking? GM still has alot of money. But to buy a majority stake in nissian would be the must risky move ever for them since it would take alot of money from them. And if i can remeber GM is still worth over 20 billion or somthing. Did you think they were in the Red?

If you believe that GM could even attempt to buy a majority stake in Nissan at this time than the stuff you smoke is even stronger than my stuff.

  2. He is mistakenly confusing market value with assets. People like him forget the main reasons why GM's market cap. is so low: Poor product and legacy costs. They certainly have the capability to fix the product problem - it's clearly underway now. In 2007 they'll fix the legacy problem too and they market cap. will quadruple if not more. Kirk is hoping to do something before then. I'm hoping he goes away by then.

With their current market value and cash reserves they are not in the position to take over any major car manufacturer. At the same time GM could be easily overtaken if somebody would be stupid enough to attempt.

  3. GM has money... perhaps not the most in the world, but enough...

GM doesn't have enough money to buy a majority stake in any major car manufacturer. Nissan is worth more than GM and Renault combined.

  4. GM should allow Renault to buy a stake in GM only if Renault allows GM to buy a controlling stake in Nissan.

And GM would pay for that with what?

  5. *Shakes head*

The U.S. (and to a lesser extent, Canada) are an anomolies in all the world.  At two and three dollars a LITRE there won't be many takers for Tahoes in Europe.

We are one hurricane or terrorist attack away from paying $100 a barrel of oil.  Europeans are ready for that.  Are we?

How are they ready for it? What's the difference between paying $6 a gallon and getting 30 MPG and paying $3 a gallon and getting 15 MPG?

  6. What? A vehicle based on aniquated architecture, with excessive weight, laughable driving dynamics, thirsty engine, and questionable utility, wrapped in tinfoil?

I take ANY of the Renaults over an Escalade, thankyouverymuch.

    Igor

I don't think so, you guys can have your 40K Euros Skodas.

  7. I'm not sure how useful your analysis is, because as I understand it, GM has no power over this deal.  They are not asking GM to issue more stock.  What they are trying to do is acquire 20% of outstanding GM shares on the market, perhaps by convicing enough big holders of GM to sell it to them at a considerable premium.  In that case, GM has no power to tell their stockholders that they cannot sell.

IIRC they did say they would like to have GM board approval of any deal, I don't think they want to get into hostile situation. As you said, they don't need anybodies approval to buy GM stock on the open market but I guess if the alliance is to work it's better if everybody is cooperating. BTW, my shares are not for sale, I think I can make much more long term if GM stays completely independent.:)

  8. GM is making positive turnaround moves and if you want to make money you have to jump in before the stock market realizes what's going on. How come nobody was suggesting an alliance with GM a year ago? GM stock was $90 while being under much more unfavorable labor situation when compared to today and even more importantly in a year or so.

  9. A manualmatic system is just a traditional automatic that allows you to control the up and downshifts either through padled or by wiggling the gear selector back and forth.

A DSG is two manual transmissions side by side with two clutches. One transmission has 1st, 3rd, and 5th gear. The other transmission has 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear. The clutches are traditional manual transmission clutches except they are activated, electronically, by the computer. You start in first gear, the second transmission is already in second gear. To shift, the computer rapidly disengages the first transmission's clutch while also engaging the second transmission's clutch. While in second gear, the first transmission shifts from 1st to 3rd and waits for power to be passed back to it.  The The transmissions pass power back and forth through the gears all the way up to 6th.

This dual clutch, dual transmission setup can shift gears faster than any human could.

What happens when the computer is expecting you to go from 2nd to 3rd gear but you unexpectedly slow down and now the first transmission is in the wrong gear, any noticeable delay?
  10. But then there are the fairly major things that the Japanese *should* recall, but don't.

    1. Toyota's engine sludging

    2. Honda's Odessy and TL transmissions breaking.

Everybody is doing it, do a research about the CTS's rear differential.

  11. Throwing a huge engine in an average car does not make it great, no matter what price.

Comparing V6 to V6, the Impala is outclassed by a car it does not compete with.

If you compare them V6 to V6 then you will be comparing cars with ~$5K price difference.

  12. Between this and the name change after one year, it kind of makes you think Lincoln should have -- oh, I don't know -- maybe waited a year to release the thing. Seriously, all of these major changes after a year suggests they rushed the car to market.

You have to work with what you got. GM didn't delay the CTS a year because the 3.6 engine wasn't ready?
