  1. At the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Nissan revealed the 2016 Nissan Titan XD. Nissan has been trailing in the full-size pickup truck segment for a number of years and hope to change that with the new Titan. Easily the biggest news on the Titan is the new 5.0 liter turbo-charged V8 Diesel. This makes the Titan the only truck in the half-ton market with a diesel V8. The new 5.0 diesel is supplied by Cummins and produces 310 horsepower and a stump ripping 555 lb-ft. This gives the Titan towing and hauling abilities closer to those in a heavy duty pickup but in the size and price class of the light duty pickups. When appropriately equipped, the Titan can tow up to 12,000 lbs. For those with a gooseneck trailer, the Titan comes with an available integrated gooseneck hitch integrated into the frame. Displayed at the show is the Titan XD Crewcab. Closer to launch there will be two more cab configuration and one more frame size. More details will be made available from Nissan in future. Powered by a new Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel rated at 310 horsepower and hefty 555 lb-ft of torque, the 2016 TITAN XD will offer an available maximum towing capacity of more than 12,000 pounds (when properly equipped), along with available cutting-edge towing features such as an integrated gooseneck hitch engineered into the frame. Additional available TITAN XD utility features and convenience aids include RearView Monitor with Trailer Guides, Around View® Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD) and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights from outside the vehicle. Also available are Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and a Front and Rear Sonar System. The wide range of available interior features includes front and rear NASA-inspired Zero Gravity seats and a large center console designed to serve as a mobile workstation. “The new TITAN will deliver toughness, capability and quality,” added Ghosn. “In addition to a range of cab configurations, the TITAN lineup will ultimately encompass multiple powertrain choices.   3. Back in August, we reported that Toyota was possibly considering dropping in a diesel for its full-size Tundra pickup. "The diesel engine is something that is on our evaluation list. Hybrid technology is something that is on our evaluation list. Either one of those alternatives could deliver some pretty good real world fuel economy,"said Rick LoFaso, Toyota's corporate manager for light trucks. "I think Cummins would bring instant name recognition and obviously they are a leader in diesel engine technology. That is not the first time we would have a tie up with somebody else." Well it seems Toyota has possibly made a decision and is turning to Cummins for help. Wards Auto reports that when the next-generation Tundra debuts in 2016, it will be available with a 5.0L turbodiesel V8 from Cummins. This is the same engine you'll find in the next-generation Titan. What's unclear is if the Tundra's version will have the same 300+ horsepower and 500+ pound-feet of torque as the Titan. A source tells Wards that the Cummins engine is a possible placeholder as Toyota would use this to gauge customer reactions and see if it would be a good idea to restart their own diesel engine project. Back in 2007, the automaker was working on a diesel for the Tundra. However when the economy hit the fan in 2008, Toyota canned the project. At the kickoff of Nissan 360, an industry showcase of Nissan's global product and technology portfolio, the company announced the next-generation Titan pickup would be packing a Cummins 5.0L turbodiesel V8. The V8 is expected to make more than 300 horsepower and well over 500 pound-feet of torque (550 pound-feet is what everybody is guessing). “Truck owners told us there's a demand for the performance and torque of a diesel in a capable truck that doesn't require the jump up to a heavy-duty commercial pickup. There is no question that the new Titan will turn heads, and with the available Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel, we expect to win new fans and attract buyers looking for this unique configuration," said Fred Diaz, Nissan Sales & Marketing divisional vice president. The new engine will be built at Cummins' Columbus Engine Plant, while the Titan will continue to be built at Nissan's Canton, Mississippi plant.
