GMC's Vice President Dreams of A Wrangler Competitor

What Does GMC's Vice President Dream for the Brand?

The Jeep Wrangler really has no equal. Sure competitors come on the scene to try and take on the Wrangler, but they go away after awhile - see the Toyota FJ Cruiser as the latest example. But that isn't stopping automakers from taking a stab at it. Case in point is GMC.

Buick-GMC vice president Duncan Aldred tells Edmunds that is looking at strengthening the brand by looking at the possibility of introducing new models.

"We are looking at everything. What segments will grow? What segments will not? We are evaluating all possibilities that could really turbocharge the brand and the growth," said Aldred.

Aldred says at the current time, GMC is in the brainstorming stage and there are no plans to add additional models. But, Aldred goes onto say "there is room throughout the range if you really start segmenting it. There is plenty of room everywhere in the hierarchy."

Some of those brainstorms have included a Wrangler competitor, a flagship SUV above the Yukon Denali, and a subcompact crossover. Whether any of the models leaves the brainstorming stage remains to be seen.

This isn't the first time Aldred has mentioned adding more models. Back in September, we reported that Aldred would like to see a Denali version of the Canyon.

Finally GM is getting some sense. GMC, if needs to be more than a Chevy, will need models like these. Too bad Granite experiment never materialized.

GM has played far too much defense for far too long. With 4 brands, it can attack traditional bastions of its competitors without being competitive with each other.

A Canyon Denali is almost a certainty. At least 1 in 4 GMCs sold are a Denali when a Denali trim of a given model exists.

Denali trims alone outsell the entire lineups of Jaguar, Land Rover, Porsche, and Lincoln individually.

Wonder how the Denali line up sells against the M  or AMG series. Yes Denali is not performance but it is a special trim level, so I have to figure they sell more than those other two overblown trims. :P

In some models, Denali gets extra performance... it's not just luxury stuff.

The M and AMG are a much pricier selection over non versions than the Denali is.  I would expect Denali to sell in greater numbers as a percentage of vehicles sold than the M/AMG stuff.

    • Here's a depiction of where a school age kid is smarter than a teacher! Also, such a teacher would need to meet up with some discipline because these sorts of things happen more so than we think. I once heard a comment about a grade school kid sitting in a car being driven by his parents on the Las Vegas Strip.  He asked how, if casinos were supposedly paying out all this money to customers, they could afford to put up these big fancy buildings.  If you're thinking like that at 10 or 11, you've probably got a Harvard or Stanford MBA in your future.   When I was his age, I just marveled at cool buildings ... and didn't do much further analysis.
    • I had to look up the Feast of San Gennaro in NYC ... courtesy of Neapolitan immigrants since 1926. This crusty dude is of local vintage ... not from the motherland.  He can't pronounce "cacio" correctly because he was probably brought up with a dialect.  It's "ca-cheeo," not "ca-gee-uh."  Love all the blondies who want to culturally appropriate themselves to being Italian.  I've seen these types in language courses in h.s. and college and they can be pretty dumb. I should make it a point to be in NYC during San Gennaro.  The official day in Naples is September 19.  The NYC festival runs about 10 days.  I could get lunch or dinner in Little Italy on a daily basis.  But, take note that a la carte street food + NYC prices can make for a dent.  The a la carte pricing at Greek festivals in secondary cities adds up, so imagine how so in NYC.
    • A teacher asks her classroom of students how many are Trump Fans. All the kids want to be liked by the teacher and raise their hands except for Little Johnny. The teacher asks Little Johnny why he does not like Trump? Little Johnny replies, my mom is a Democrat, my dad is a Democrat and so I will be a Democrat too. The teacher irritated says to Little Johnny, so then if your mom is a Moron and your dad an Idiot, what would that make you? Little Johnny with a grin on his face looks at the teacher and says, "That would make me a Trump Fan!"
    • I will say that my Escalade Steering wheel with the built in knobs on the underside of the steering wheel are just a great comfortable grip for long road trips and confidence that it will not just slip in the hand when turning also on top of leather and heat.
