    Aston Martin May Have Killed SUV Plans


    • The Lagonda SUV May Have Been Canned

    Every luxury automaker it seems has gone mad for SUVs. Companies like Lamborghini, Bentley, and even Rolls-Royce are hard at work on a SUV. But it seems that one has possibly gone back on their plans.

    Back in 2009, Aston Martin showed off the Lagonda SUV concept. Reactions to the concept were mixed to say in the least. But former CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez said the company was considering go ahead with the project. Now Aston Martin's Director of Design, Marek Reichman hints that SUV may have been axed.

    “We first showed the Lagonda SUV concept back in 2009. We still have plans for the brand. There might be some surprises in the marque’s re-establishment into the market place, but as a very unique coachbuilt experience. And that’s probably what’s most befitting of the brand,” said Reichman to Piston Heads.

    “It’s more. It’s the reinvention of the marque, the brand, but done in a very, very limited way. It’s not something we believe that is a mass product.”

    What are these plans? A possible one is an exclusive four-door sedan. Earlier this year, spy shots captured a distinctive four-door sedan undergoing testing by Aston Martin. The speculation is that sedan will be a Lagonda.

    Doesn't make sense to me. The concept is usually notably better looking than the production version, but this concept was awfully ungainly. A-M didn't seem able to decide if they wanted an SUV or just a bloated sedan- I cannot remember another notchback 4-dr SUV.

      Rolls-Royce is the latest automaker to announce they are working on an SUV known as Project Cullinan and today, the company has dropped a couple of pictures to give us a glimpse of what's in store.
      Rolls doesn't call Project Cullinan an SUV. Instead, they describe the vehicle as being as an “all-terrain, high-sided vehicle.” (Is there such a thing too much pomp and circumstance? -WM) From the two pictures Rolls-Royce has released, Cullinan looks like a raised Phantom wagon. 
      “This is an incredibly exciting moment in the development of Project Cullinan both for Rolls-Royce and for the patrons of luxury that follow us around the world. Bringing together the new four-wheel drive system and the new ‘architecture of luxury’ for the first time sets us on the road to creating a truly authentic Rolls-Royce which, like its forebears, will reset the standard by which all other luxury goods are judged,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Rolls Royce's CEO in a statement.
      Project Cullinan is also an important vehicle for Rolls-Royce. It will be one of the first vehicles, alongside the new Phantom to use a new aluminum architecture that will underpin future models. The SUV or “all-terrain, high-sided vehicle” is expected to debut sometime late next year.

      PROJECT CULLINAN TAKES NEXT STEP IN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME
      In an open letter published in the Financial Times on 18 February 2015, Rolls-Royce undertook to regularly inform its stakeholders about the progress of Project Cullinan. Continuing this dialogue, which has seen twice-yearly updates, Rolls-Royce today publishes photographs depicting the latest key milestone in the development programme of this new ‘all-terrain, high-sided vehicle’. This first full development vehicle will begin testing in public from tomorrow.
      The world’s leading luxury goods brand has regularly informed its patrons about this painstaking development programme. Advocates of the marque have been shown the first engineering mule built for the development of the new all-wheel drive suspension system, as well as those created to test the all-new aluminium architecture that will underpin all Rolls-Royces from 2018 onwards.
      This latest development vehicle will travel to numerous locations around the world in a challenging testing programme to ensure that the end product will be ‘Effortless … Everywhere’. Just after Christmas, for example, Project Cullinan will enter the Arctic Circle to undergo cold weather durability and traction testing. Later in 2017, it will travel to the Middle East to endure the highest of temperatures and challenging desert conditions.

      The end results were as follows:
      6TH PLACE: INFINITI QX80
      When you factor in worst in test fuel economy, a cramped third row, and those awkward looks, you have a big SUV
      that only one of us loved.
      5TH PLACE: LINCOLN NAVIGATOR
      Although it’s cheaper than the others, it’s not nearly as luxurious. We love the powertrain and the ‘Gator’s utility.
      4TH PLACE: LAND ROVER RANGE ROVER HSE
      Gorgeous truck, Gerry McGovern be praised. But the suspect build quality and pricey everything else leaves us cold.
      3RD PLACE: LEXUS LX 570
      Old age and treachery get some respect! Not ideal for all owners, but there’s something uniquely desirable about Lexus’ go-anywhere bruiser.
      2ND PLACE: MERCEDES-BENZ GL450
      Our former SUV of the Year is starting to show signs of age. Still, the GL remains one of the smartest SUVs you can buy.
      1ST PLACE: CADILLAC ESCALADE PLATINUM
      The best looking, the best interior, the best sounding, and the quickest in our test. The Cadillac Escalade Platinum stole our hearts.
      In reading the write up, it was amazing to see many of the folks involved in the testing said while they all picked this as the SUV of the Year in 2015, looking back, the exterior and interior are sadly showing how dated it is. Not holding up well compred to the Escalade.
      I was also surprised by the fact that they found the Lexus was actually a better off roader and more features for off road driving than the vaunted Range Rover. The lexus had the most features that allowed you to do things the range rover could not.
      I honestly thought it was a very balanced, one of the better reads from MT.
