Genesis pushing the boundaries of performance in their segment has unleashed the newest performance monster for Luxury EVs. The GV60 MAGMA was stated by Manfred Harrer, President and Head of Hyundai's Motor Group R&D division as follows:

The GV60 MAGMA has extensive enhancements to the powertrain offering the most powerful performance within the Genesis lineup today. This is more than just hardware upgrades, but advanced software refinements too. The GV60 MAGMA delivers the following:

The GV60 MAGMA offers a perfect harmony between luxury and driving dynamics with precision-tuned driving profiles tailored for any situation according to their press release. Five distinct driving modes are offered that can be changed on the fly via their drive mode button.

• Range Mode prioritizes efficiency and maximizes driving range with seamless responsiveness.
• Comfort Mode strikes a balance between performance and fuel economy for everyday use.
• Sport Mode quickens responsiveness, offering a spirited driving experience for routine journeys.

Tuned Pedal Response and Driver Connection

According to Genesis, the MAGMA performance line offers a key element to driving via an innovative pedal response for enhance control. The dynamic range is the specially configured accelerator pedal. Resistance has been adjusted to elevate control and reduce fatigue, offering lower resistance in light pedal applications for daily driving and greater resistance for high-depression inputs during sporty maneuvers. This ensures a smooth and intuitive connection between the driver and the vehicle's subtle power. To put this in a simple defined statement, Teajun Kang, Senior R&D engineer for Genesis EV Performance Test Team made the following statement:

Genesis MAGMA performance line delivers on their stated belief that customer experiences are focused as "son-nim" or honored guests. The GV60 MAGMA, first previewed as a concept alongside the Neolun, joins the Magma GT Concept and G90 WINGBACK Magma concept in signaling that Genesis is serious about building a performance brand alongside its luxury credentials.

Genesis had revealed their worldwide new concept car strategy in Liwa Oasis, United Arab Emirates. This concept car strategy begins with the New X Skorpio Concept, an extreme off-road concept vehicle designed to tackle any demanding terrain including the Rub' al Khali desert in the United Arab Emirates. 

The X Scorpio Concept sets a new benchmark for off-road driving equipped with a high-performance V8 engine delivering 1,100 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque in an AWD platform. The X Scorpio Concept has the following specifications:

Back in September, Hyundai Motor Company CEO Investor Day was where Genesis confirmed that they would be entering the Global GT racing class and this would be a 10-year long-term ambition to start offering Performance globally that would compete head-to-head with the Europeans and Asian auto companies.

True to its form as the second race car in the history of Genesis, the Magma GT Concept’s design reveals its purpose at a glance—every surface and proportion is shaped to optimized aerodynamic performance and driving efficiency.

• Low-set front bonnet and elongated sloping roofline, creating a sleek, race-ready silhouette.
• Wide, muscular rear fenders that reinterpret classic GT race-car proportions through the lens of Genesis’ “Athletic Elegance” philosophy.

Per additional interviews, Donckerwolke has confirmed that this Magma GT is the start for entering the Global GT racing circuit, but they will also be offering this car in an S, GTS, roadster, lightweight version, clubsport version, GT3 street legal version, GT3 R only for racing. He also confirmed that the GT and GT3 R will be the first two trims to come out.

While details about the interior have been kept under wraps awaiting the official product launch release, Donckerwokle did confirm that the interior is complete and finished.

For those wondering about the wheel size, Donckerwolke did confirm that the Magma GT has 20 inch 275/30 tires with the rear being 21 inch wheels with 345/25 tires.

Taking inspiration from the Italian countryside, Genesis has released an updated X concept built on a production G90 platform called the Genesis X Gran Coupe Concept. Per Genesis press release, the X Gran Coupe Concept is an object d' art meant to set free the passion one has for driving on the open roads, looking for adventure wherever they go.

Italian-Inspired Exterior Design

The exterior metallic green color was taken from the color of the ancient olive trees from Italy's eastern Marche region. Breathing poetry in the gently rolling hills, the X Gran Coupe Concept reflects its surroundings as a multifaceted gem in radiant form.

Genesis wanted to from the start ensure that this updated concept exudes athleticism, radiating confidence as the car roars along the road bringing its true spirit alive. The view from a head-on perspective shows this sporty character with widened fenders, sleekly lowered roofline, creating a commanding presence, a predator poised on the edge, muscles taught and coiled, ready to leap. Kinetic energy brought to life.

The Profile shows a naturally integrated roof line from front to back, shaping a canopy of a true sports car. Reframing an encompassing design of luxury with "Athletic Elegance" is what Genesis is delivering here. The extended fenders are specifically designed to create a three-dimensional look that gives a dynamic, commanding stance. The LED lines of light are designed to amplify the car's increased track that continues to exude a powerful, confident presence.

From country to city, Genesis created this bold silhouette that delivers an elegant, timeless look that is at home no matter where one drives. This latest update builds on the Gran Coupe and Gran Convertible concepts first shown at the 2025 Seoul Mobility Show.

The Genesis X Gran Coupe Concept was intentionally designed to deliver a minimalist approach while also having a layered approach like fine jewelry from every angle, attention to details that show intent without being gaudy.

Mediterranean Interior Craftsmanship

The X Gran Coupe is the latest chapter in Genesis's X Concept trilogy, and with the G90 WINGBACK Magma concept also pushing the G90 platform in bold new directions, it's clear Genesis isn't done surprising us.

In ten short years, Genesis has accomplished much in what has taken legacy brands decades, introducing diverse forms of the Genesis Magma performance line gives us the striking presence of the G90 WINGBACK Concept.

The G90 WINGBACK Concept is built on an unmodified G90 platform with its 126-inch wheelbase and 201-inch length, the Wingback Concept draws out new potential within a familiar platform. Signature Genesis design cues like the Crest Grille, Parabolic Line and the distinctive Two-Line headlamps are intensified, giving the concept an aggressive stance while maintaining an aristocratic demeanor.

According to Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke who drove the WINGBACK out for the reveal, he stated the following:

“At the moment there is, let’s say, a multiplication of SUVs. And this fast growth will create a saturation; this is when other typologies of cars are going to become attractive again. This is why I strongly believe in not having a typology monoculture.”

Donckerwolke went on to say the following about the G90 WINGBACK, the G90 WINGBACK features the Magma insignia on the front bumper, which is the start of a dynamic, wider body style with large lower air intakes and fender flares that house custom 22-inch wheels running low profile tires.

This continues as the WINGBACK carries the parabolic line front to back along the longer wheelbase, the G90 trunk replaced with a roofline that has been stretched to achieve a sleek grand tourer wagon silhouette. The rear tailgate hatch has dual spoilers which help with downward force on the rear wheels enhancing the performance-inspired functional look.

The G90 WINGBACK Concept is finished in a deep metallic green color, showing that Magma has gone outside of the Magma Orange color.

Donckerwolke stated: “Magma is much more than a color; it’s about showing what is possible when Korean innovation meets global ambition. It represents a distinct Korean vision of care, respect and balance. Magma does not shout; it invites, where most chase aggression and extremes, we seek balance. Magma is designed to be rewarding, not challenging; to complement the driver, not to intimidate them.”

The WINGBACK interior highlights the luxury with Magma DNA. A striking, green-colored Magma stitching and details throughout from seats to door trim all have complimenting touches reminding one of a luxury high performance auto. Power waiting to be unleashed as they stated much like Magma bubbling beneath the earths surface.

The duality of power and control wrapped in an elegant package is what the G90 WINGBACK shows in a concept auto. This concept embodies a decade's worth of innovation, acceleration for Genesis into the next chapter of their journey.

No further information has been given in regard to what type of engine is under the hood, some have speculated a tuned version of the existing twin turbo V6 engine. Others have stated that there appears to be enough room under the hood for a naturally aspirated or turbocharged V8.

The WINGBACK will travel the globe helping Genesis get customer input about the style and direction of the Magma lineup.

Today at the New York International Auto Show, Genesis unveiled the Genesis X Gran Equator Concept. A imagining of the "Athletic Elegance" design philosophy while embracing the rugged over-landing experience. Genesis has stated that this is a harmonizing contrast of elegance with ruggedness, refined comfort while embracing the spirit of exploration.

Defying traditional SUV looks, the X Gran Equator Concept delivers clean lines on an uncluttered surface. A long hood, sleek cabin, and fast C-pillar create a silhouette that defies traditional SUV conventions, while dark wheel-arch cladding and 24-inch bead lock wheels underscore its off-road readiness. The geometric auxiliary lamps and split-opening tailgate blend practicality with Genesis’ signature Two-Line headlamps, ensuring the X Gran Equator is as purposeful as it is striking.

Orchestrating contrast between analog architecture and digital technologies, crafting a space that feels both functional and evocative. At the center of the cabin is a four-circle display cluster on the center stack, inspired by the dials of vintage cameras. The interior design features contrasting colors and shapes, with a preference for geometric over organic elements. The dashboard's linear architecture and absence of decorations focus the driver's attention on the journey ahead, while swiveling front seats and modular storage solutions enhance practicality.

A symbol of endurance, agility, and refined power is what Genesis has stated they delivered in the name Equator, widely recognized as the "finest stallion" in the world of Arabian horses.

This concept is an expansion of the Genesis lifestyle-oriented vehicles, balancing versatility with sophistication. Today at the SEOUL Mobility 2025 Show Genesis revealed their X Gran Coupe and Convertible Concepts. Genesis stated this is another step in the future of the Luxury division towards redefining automotive luxury and performance. This New Era of Genesis is dedicated to their global customers in sharing their aspirations for Cars and SUVs. 

Genesis focused on these two cars that they believe will deliver what people are wanting in a car for the launchpad of driving in a new decade as Genesis looks to release new models that embody their pursuit of high-performance technology and future luxury design.

Genesis stated that these two concepts took inspiration from the greater Mediterranean area. Specifically, the coupe was inspired by the Mediterranean olive tree and the convertible by southern European wines.

These Genesis concepts are additional interpretation of the G90 series of Luxury cars. The Coupe showcases the Genesis way of elegance with athleticism while the convertible showcases the freedom of expression with connection to the surrounding environment.

The X Coupe and X Convertible Concepts are adorned with Genesis’ characteristic Two-Line headlights, which extend toward the iconic Genesis Crest Grille. The 3D grille meshes are inspired by woven metal strings arranged in diamond-shaped Two-Line patterns.

The wide lower air intakes with sculpted grille meshes emphasize the sporty character of the vehicles, while the elongated hoods create a dynamic silhouette. The widened Two-Line headlights extend to the fenders, visually enhancing the increased track width.

Side profiles and wheel designs were purpose built to enforce a muscular dramatic stance for these cars. Aesthetics was also not forgotten as Genesis took a high-tech approach with flush Genesis logos and hidden retractable cameras, touch-less operations such as the trunk.

From the olive tree use of veneer wood accents to crystal accents that convene a captivating display of light to bring warmth into the interior cabin, these concepts were paired with soft materials using recovered materials including wastewater used in the tanning process of the leather seats that gives a natural olive oil scent for the Coupe and a natural Cabernet Sauvignon for the convertible. These G90 Concepts in lush colors contrast drastically with the recently shown G90 Sedan Black Edition.

Motivation in both cars is from the current G90 Twin-Turbo V6 that produces 409 horsepower, 405 lb-ft of torque with a 48V electric supercharger.

The G90 Black edition in long wheelbase did not come about by the normal approach of someone saying they wanted a black auto, as an all-black trim is nothing new in today's evolving auto industry. To understand the passion that went into this top-of-the-line executive trim G90 Long Wheelbase edition, you have to first look at the team that has brought about the ultimate Black Edition.

Genesis turned to an all-woman trio in asking them to build the ultimate luxury Black Edition in the auto industry that would successfully set itself apart in the auto industry.

BLACK is the origin for everything in reflecting on what the color would mean for the brand. The ladies felt that both Genesis and black symbolize creation, and particularly a focus on essence. By blacking out all exterior and interior elements, we are showcasing the pinnacle of our brand identity, “Athletic Elegance.”

The next step was to review how the competition approached black and how Genesis would approach it. The trio of ladies noticed that everyone had a flexibility in offering shades of black both externally and internally allowing one to find differences on each auto.  In contrast, every element of a Genesis Black model, big or small, is uniformly black. Just pure black. This creates a harmonious blend that underscores black’s elegance. 

The final attention to detail was not just the Crest Grille, wheels, emblem, wood garnishes and doorsteps, but even the tiny buttons and switches were all developed as Genesis Black-exclusive details that required changes in their manufacturing methods. Even the Bang & Olufson logos on the speakers were made in a darker shade. 

Working with wood, leather, various metals, required endless rounds of sampling to create the ultimate natural mix of black, ensuring every inch would have a luxury feel while matching the surrounding elements. This is shown in the attention to detail that shows from the dash to the seats, including the back seats.

The Black Edition team had to considering how each vehicle contains tens of thousands of parts, changing just one — even its color — prompts a chain of questions they had to investigate and think through, like how they will affect operations on the factory line. 

Sustainability was an important part of how they would use materials and as such recycled materials to better ways to tan leathers or stain natural woods were researched.

As such the Black Edition had driven sales as even more favored among customers as shown by sales figures. The goal was to have customers take pride in owning a Genesis Black Edition from the G or GV 80 or 90 series.

The complete blackout of the G90 Long Wheelbase has been enhanced by ensuring every little detail is a perfect matching black. From the moldings around various points on the exterior such as the bumper moldings to headlamp inner side bezels. The Genesis Black Edition has taken it to the littles details throughout the interior ensuring that everything matches even the audio-visual systems when they are off. The Navigation system even has a special black mode.

Some might feel it to be a bit extreme, but even the Smart fob for running the auto as well as the engine bay are ensured to be a matching black. The welcome and goodbye animations, 2D and 3D vehicle images and graphic themes used are all special Black Edition to match the auto.

The G90 Long Wheelbase edition will be available only with a 3.5L turbo gas motor paired to a 48-volt electric supercharger system and all-wheel drive. Specifications will vary depending on region and Genesis has stated that interested parties should contact their local Genesis luxury retailer for more information.

Genesis has in three short years delivered 85,000 GV70's to luxury customers making it their most popular model in North America per the COO of Genesis Claudia Marquez. Along with this accomplishment, Genesis opened 4 new independent luxury stores bringing their luxury standalone stores to 60 in closing out calendar year 2024. This will allow Genesis to deliver a superior luxury shopping experience to their customers and will continue to open more new stores in strategic locations across North America in Calendar 2025.

Genesis states that the 2026 GV70 delivers on a Bold new Exterior and Interior designs. The GV70's front fascia includes a redesigned G-matrix Crest Grille and multi-lens array (MLA) headlamps for ICE and the Electric GV70 G-Matrix Crest Grille is tailored for the EV including a new redesigned charge port that includes the NACS port.

The front end has an enhanced bolder skid plate design, creating a robust stance that compliments the air intake grilles allowing it to have a sporty appearance. This athletic stance is supported by new 19"- and 21"-wheel options, the turn signals are designed to align with the front headlamps two-line concept.

The Korean-inspired design principle "Beauty of White Space" is embraced by the all-new 27" OLED display that integrates the cluster and infotainment system into a single horizontal layout.

The 2026 GV70 has refined and elevated the driver and passenger experience and convenience voice recognition controls that allows one to control HVAC settings, window position, to driving experience such as Terrain Mode to optimize one's experience depending on the road conditions by moving into snow, mud, or sand mode to name just a few.

Both ice and electric versions are available with Digital Key and Smart Key with Genesis Smartphone App allowing one to have the ultimate comfort in using/controlling their auto. This technology continues with Bang & Olufsen surround system with Beosonic technology providing an immersive sound experience via the 16 speakers and adjustable ambient lighting functions. Triple-zone fully automatic HVAC improves the in-cabin experience for every person.

The gas GV70 has two powertrain options:

• 2.5L inline turbo 4-cylinder engine producing 300 horsepower
• 3.5L V6 twin turbo producing 375 horsepower

The GV70's comfort and stability are enhanced using the HBMC or Highway Body Motion Control. This is a control system that handles front and rear dampening forces during acceleration and deceleration with the existing RP or Road Preview system which is a forward-facing camera to read the road surface and control the vehicles electronically controlled suspension to optimize comfort, while minimizing impacts.

The electronic GV70 comes with a larger 84kWh high-capacity battery pack offering 10% to 80% charging in under 20 minutes.

This week, ahead of the New York International Auto Show, Genesis unveiled two concepts that strongly hint at the brand's future.

Genesis Neolun: A Preview of the GV90

First, the Genesis Neolun Concept is likely a strong hint of what an upcoming Genesis GV90 three-row SUV will look like. Neolun merges the Greek and Latin languages, with Neo being the word for "New" and Lun, short for "Luna" or "Moon". The concept's design was inspired by Korea's iconic moon-shaped jars. The shape is the familiar two-box design but with softly rounded corners and the elimination of "frills" that clutter. Dipped in a handsome two-tone Midnight Black and Majestic Blue paint, the Neolun has a striking presence.

Sporting a forward-opening rear coach door design, the Genesis Neolun's doors open wide and unobstructed by a B-pillar. Genesis says that B-pillarless development has reached a point where use in a production vehicle is now possible.

Futuristic Interior With Production Hints

The interior of the Genesis Neolun concept is out there with the high-tech-futuristic-concept-car feel, but there are some hints of production queues hidden in there. The concept's screen is comically large, but with an aspect ratio similar to existing Genesis models, we can see a smaller version making it to production. The center console's style is quite similar to that of the Genesis GV60. The front seats can swivel 180 degrees to face the rear, a feature that we fear no US regulator would allow. In addition to the standard warming seats, the Neolun features a heated floor to give the warmth and atmosphere of a home living room. The special sound system offers an immersive concert hall-like experience while a crystal jewel in the front activates and rotates. While the concept is shown as a two-row, the GV90 is expected to come as a three-row, though a premium two-row version could be possible.

Genesis has not released power figures or range for the Neolun. The GV90 will debut Hyundai Motor Group's next-generation EV platform that replaces the E-GMP platform that underpins the Kia EV9 and the forthcoming Hyundai Ioniq 9. We should see the production Genesis GV90 later this year.

Genesis GV60 Magma: Performance Goes Electric

Genesis is dipping its toes into the performance EV field with the introduction of the Genesis GV60 Magma Concept. The Magma line is intended to be added as a performance option to all production Genesis models in the lineup over the coming years. The GV60 is Genesis's only dedicated EV, and shares its platform with the Hyundai Ioniq 5, itself offered as the performance Hyundai Ioniq 5 N model. The Magma concept has since evolved into the production 2027 Genesis GV60 MAGMA with 641 horsepower.

The GV60 Magma Concept elevates the design and performance of the existing GV60, Genesis' first dedicated EV model, with improved battery and motor technology. The concept car is the first step toward creating a deeper emotional connection between the driver and the vehicle.

The GV60 Magma Concept's exterior design harmonizes aesthetics with considerations for chassis, aerodynamics and thermodynamics. To enhance stability during sporty driving, the car has been widened and lowered, giving it a more dynamic stance and allowing for a lower center of gravity.

At the front, a wider and lower main air intake in the bumper effectively cools the batteries, motor and brakes, while the air curtains enhance the car's aerodynamic efficiency. Three stamped holes above the main air intake, inspired by the GV80 Coupe Concept and the G80 Magma Special, provide additional cooling. Added canards assist in generating downforce on the front axle.

The enlarged fenders and integrated wheelhouse outlets help reduce kinetic energy and improve cooling for the brakes. The titanium-colored flow-formed 21-inch wheels feature integrated aero discs, which also help cool the brakes. On the roof, fins have been strategically placed to control the aerodynamic flow and channel it to the rear wing, generating rear downforce and ensuring aerodynamic fluidity.

Is the X Concept Trilogy of EVs from Genesis winners?

March 2021 Los Angeles California during the great global Pandemic, Genesis revealed the first of their trilogy of EV concepts called the X Concept. Genesis had the following points to be said about this reveal.

• New model presents Genesis’ sustainable luxury in the form of an EV-based high-performance GT coupe concept car.
• Genesis partnered with award-winning director, Jason Bergh, to create the ‘Genesis X California’ film, highlighting the dynamism of California’s car culture, Genesis’ pioneering spirit, and the promise of a sustainable future for all.

Genesis X Concept

This GT (Gran Turismo) concept car uses the Two Lines theme styling that Genesis has become known for and is the future design language of Genesis EV models.

The press release stated that Genesis X is a combination of Genesis and the Letter X, which symbolizes a "hidden hero."

To quote SangYup Lee, head of Genesis Global Design. 

"The Genesis X Concept can be described as the ultimate vision of Athletic Elegance, the inherent design language of Genesis,"  "The signature Two Lines theme and sustainable luxury will be blueprints for the futuristic designs and state-of-the-art technologies that Genesis seeks to adopt in its future models."

From the Two-Lined Quad head lamps to the G-Matrix pattern three-dimensional Crest Grille, the focus is to accentuate the look of the future of electric automobiles that are fun to drive and a desire to own. This flow of design language is to create a sense of unity and flow.

The bottom front air vent intakes feature a thin and sophisticated mesh form that not only creates a sturdy impression, but also helps to cool down the vehicle, facilitating airflow, reducing air resistance, and helping to extend mileage.

The side follows the traditional GT model design with a long hood, short rear, and the two-lined lamps leading to the headlamps and taillights reinforcing the flow of the EV. The arching Parabolic Line that runs along the side, and the fender's maximized volume, create a dynamic and elegant impression while evoking the desire to be driven hard with passion.

The Genesis X Concept is painted in Lençóis blue, a color that Genesis developed, inspired by the lagoons of Maranhenses National Park in Brazil, a place where the lake forms only during the rainy season with an intense blue color due to the geological area.

Inspiring warmth, comfort, and control, the Genesis X Concept features a driver-oriented design, a cockpit that surrounds the driver with all operating systems and displays.

Genesis believes that differentiation of space by coloring the driver's seat in scotch brown and the passenger seat in ocean wave green blue helps to emphasize the car's unique design. The dashboard design for both driver and passenger is to create a sense of enveloping the passengers as well as the driver while using the floating center console to also give a sense of personal boundaries.

The application of Genesis Two-Lines design element is carried out in the slim, indirect air vents that surround passengers, as well as the side window molding, emphasizing the Two-Lines concept, providing a sense of unity with the exterior design.

The Free-Form display, manages various functions such as clusters, navigation and HVAC systems, and the Crystal Sphere Electronic Shift Lever, which integrates driving mode settings, add a high-tech atmosphere to the interior.

Genesis chose to go with an elegant, exposed metal seat frames to create a sense of athletic strength and integrate four-point seat belts into the bucket seats, optimized for driving.

April 2022 New York Genesis Debuts Genesis X Speedium Coupe

Genesis made the following points with this second of three Genesis X concepts reveal.

• The newly unveiled concept reflects Genesis’ principle of reductive design
• Genesis’ wings and Two Lines prominent in the design, while an hourglass silhouette gives the car its muscular presence
• Genesis announced plans to manufacture the Electric model of GV70 in the U.S. locally and roll out Genesis Priority One, a personalized GV60 purchase experience in select U.S. markets

Luc Donckerwolke, Genesis Chief Creative Officer stated the following:

"The Genesis X Speedium Coupe was born out of a “freestyle” design exercise based on the Genesis X Concept." " It inherits the timeless Genesis’ design philosophy, “Athletic Elegance,” in an even more progressive way."

X Speedium Coupe name was inspired by the passion for motorsports felt by the designers at the Korean racetrack. The Genesis X Speedium Coupe stands out for its restrained elegance, clean lines and subtle curves.

Genesis believes that an emotional value of driving will remain strong in the era of electrification, enjoyment of driving a car that can hug the road, carving up the asphalt turn after turn, smoothly transitioning from corner to corner while firmly holding oneself in place wrapped in luxury of sustainable materials.

Genesis X Speddium Coupe is painted in metallic emerald green shade, referred to as "Inje Green". This color is inspired by the Korean racetrack Inje Speedium race circuit, the green color of the area encompasses the mountainous landscape where the track is located. Genesis believes this color completes the image of a classic car that embodies dynamism, speed, and timeless elegance.

Welcome to the Speedium zone, where movement is made without moving.

Genesis X Speedium Coupe was on display at 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, part of the Monterey Car Week. Reception was outstanding by the folks that attended.

Genesis public statement hit the following three points:

• The interior showcases the brand’s “Beauty of White Space” design ethos
• Driver-oriented layout amplifies driving experience for the EV era
• New sound architecture highlights Genesis' attention to detail, amplifying the value of in-car experiences of the future

At the time that the Speedium was revealed in New York, no interior access was available. From the time the car was revealed in NY to the time of showing it at Pebble beach, the interior was developed over those five months by the Genesis design group.

Genesis Chief Creative Officer Luc Donckerwolke stated the following:

“The X Speedium Coupe was conceived as an internal design exercise that we later decided to reveal publicly. It was nothing more than a hard model built on our Athletic Elegance design identity,”  “Given the positive reception it received at the event, we chose to complete the concept and present it to discerning attendees at the Pebble Beach Concours. The interior captures the Genesis brand’s “Beauty of White Space” design ethos, which suits various luxury lifestyles and adds to the appeal of the dynamic GT.”

Genesis had the following statement about the reveal of the Speedium interior.

Quote: 

The interior of the Genesis X Speedium Coupe leverages a classic Korean design principle known as “the Beauty of White Space.” Inspired by Korean architecture, this aligns closely with the ideology of reductive design and is expressed though a minimalist and pure form language punctuated by strong design elements.

The asymmetric, driver-oriented layout is a continuation of the theme found on Genesis’ more recent concept cars, in which all the control systems and displays surround the driver. The instrument panel and floating center console wrap around the driver cockpit, amplifying the driving experience in the era of electrification.

This effect is further accentuated by the interior’s contrasting color palette, which clearly distinguishes the driver’s area from the passenger space. The driver’s seating area is set in Pinegrove Green, which perfectly complements the Inje Green exterior. The contrasting Monterey Gold around the driver’s seat—a color inspired by the scenery along the Northern California coast—alludes to the yellow flowers and golden sand found in the region.

In addition, Genesis is exploring the future of audio experiences through a new sound architecture, which blends technology and art while highlighting the brand’s attention to detail. In collaboration with sound mater Guk-il Yu, the head of Metal Sound Design—a company that specializes in high-performance speakers—the X Speedium Coupe features strategically-placed speakers to fill the interior with rich sound.

Tweeters, midrange speakers, woofers and subwoofer are strategically positioned to provide the finest staging sound experience. The aluminum tweeters, which emit high-pitched sounds, were flawlessly crafted with a precision milling method to optimize acoustic performance.

The driver-focused cockpit has a curved OLED display that visualizes the heritage of high-performance cars. The cluster’s GUI includes a center-mounted motor output indicator designed in a “newtro” style, which is a stark contrast to the RPM gauges found in ICE models. The vertical display on the right side of the driver’s seat features an integrated touch display with an optimized UI design. The display includes the start button as well as the multimedia and vehicle control functions.

Genesis made the following statement, Craftmanship that Lives in the Details.

Quoting the press release about the interior: 

The X Speedium Coupe’s cargo area features X straps on top of the loading space, a detail inspired by the brand’s unique G-Matrix Pattern that underlines the dynamic coupe experience. This design feature was derived from the Genesis Mint Concept.

Another noteworthy detail is the leather—the material itself as well as its application. The quilted pattern on the leather seats and the door trim gives the impression of a classic sports car. Meanwhile, the steering wheel features cut-off leather that were salvaged from repurposed car seat materials and woven together.

Two types of leather were used in the interior: vegetable-tanned leather and an innovative new breathable grain leather. The vegetable-tanned leather is treated with plant-derived substances—such as citrus fruits and mimosa—and processed without chromium. Compared to ordinary leather, the breathable grain leather used in the upper part of the cabin requires less water and lower levels of chemicals to manufacture. The threads used in the finishing process are made from repurposed plastic, adding to the material’s durability and water resistance factors.

Genesis X Convertible, Completion of an Inspired Trilogy

The Genesis X Convertible completes the X Concept Trilogy and shares its architecture and electric powertrain with the X Concept and X Speedium Coup.

Genesis has demonstrated its electric power vehicle design versatility in this X Convertible and had the following two points to make.

• The interior design takes its inspiration from Korean roof architecture, which is a nod to both the brand’s origins as well as the most important aspect of convertible cars
• Combined with its folding hardtop roof—that integrates transparent moon roofs above the front occupants to provide an open feel even when closed—the architecture and powertrain sets the perfect stage to embrace the thrill of driving

Luc Donckerwolke, Chief Creative Officer had this to say: “Genesis started life by producing sedans mainly targeting business users. While creating a new, differentiated design DNA, we gradually increased the emotional appeal by applying this DNA to the SUV typology. Now, electric powertrains have given us the perfect scenario in which to enjoy nature, and propelled the brand to create vehicles with even greater emotional resonance,”

Genesis stated that the X Convertible Concept has ideal proportions that are complemented by design purity and exemplify the continued refinement in orchestrating design elements that make up Athletic Elegance, a beacon for the Genesis brand.

The X Convertible shares its architecture and electric powertrain with the X Concept and X Speedium Coupe. Combined with a folding hardtop roof, that integrates transparent moon roofs above the front occupants to provide an open feel even when closed. This architecture and powertrain sets the perfect stage to communicate with nature, allowing users to enjoy the environment in a new way, free from mechanical disturbance according to Genesis.

Genesis released the following statement: 

"The Genesis X Convertible concept’s long bonnet, generous dash-to-axle, short front overhang, and long wheelbase are drawn rearwards towards the long deck, accentuating its stately yet relaxed poise. The anti-wedge Parabolic Line emphasizes the regal character of the profile, creating tension between the full surfaces through a gently rearward-sloping horizontal belt line, while muscular blisters around the wheels form an athletic ‘Coke bottle’ plan view and integrate into an elegant silhouette when viewed from the side.

The characteristic quad lights—from which Genesis’ Two-Line graphic identity originates—are also present on the X Convertible concept. As in the X Speedium Coupe concept, this graphic identity integrates the new EV face and forms an abstract of the Crest Grille. The cooling function for the powertrain and batteries has been relocated to lower openings in the front bumper.

The rear end of the X Convertible concept features a concave elliptical duck tail intersected by horizontal quad rear lights, as seen on the X Concept and X Speedium Coupe concepts. The continuity of the elliptical shape is interrupted and crowned by a V-shape indentation that hints at the crest and wings of the Genesis logo.

The wheels are a combination of Genesis’ G-Matrix pattern orchestrated by an aero dish concave section. The spacers of this aero dish serve to extract heat from the brakes."

Genesis believes they have Captured the Korean Aesthetic Nuances of the Interior with the Exterior and had this statement about that belief.

"

The interior of the X Convertible concept features a driver-centric four-seat asymmetric layout—a consistent theme throughout all recent Genesis concept cars. Its wraparound instrument panel seamlessly integrates with the center console and cocoons the driver cockpit, emphasizing not only its performance-oriented attributes but its connection with the driver.

Inspired in part by traditional Korean roof architecture—a nod to both the brand’s origins as well as the most important aspect of convertibles—the interior design features Giwa Navy and Dancheong Orange colors, which lend the cabin a modern look and feel, befitting the car’s vibrant character.

The primary interior color is Giwa Navy—named after “Giwa”, the roof tiles on Korean houses. Made from recyclable wool fabric, the textured, woven pad graphic wraps around the cabin, contrasting with the smooth and sleek leather surfaces of the seats. Meanwhile, Dancheong Orange—named after the traditional decorative colorings on traditional Korean wooden buildings— serves as a bold accent color, encircling the cabin in a two-line motif and featuring on the stitching of the seats and fabric.

The Genesis X Convertible concept’s exterior is painted in Crane White. White cranes represent nobility and sanctity in Korea, and Genesis wanted to weave these cultural elements into its colorways. The result is an exterior surface coated in white with pearl particles, achieving a luxurious sheen that dynamically frames the contrasting interior."

Genesis believes that the X Convertible Concept is an open-air theater, providing unparalleled sensory experience for all occupants.

With an electric powertrain and high-performance premium sound system, the X Convertible offers freedom of expression and a heightened sensory experience.

Luc Donckerwolke, made this final statement:

“It is the normal development of Genesis to increase the athletic and emotional facet of our design philosophy by creating an emotional trilogy: the X family,” “Innovation is the catalyst to becoming more engaged with the environment around us. We are in the process of transitioning Genesis into a company that will deliver products for customers to enjoy.”

This leaves only one question that needs to be asked, Did Genesis deliver on that belief that these are fun cars that people would want?

Genesis is closing out the 2021 Automotive year on a high note. In October, the Genesis X Concept, won a Red Dot: Best of the Best award in the Mobility and Transportation segment of the Design Concept Category at the 2021 Red Dot Design Awards, hosted by Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Germany.

Created in 1955, the Red Dot Design Award is considered one of the top three design distinctions in the world alongside the iF design Award and the IDEA Design Award. Each year, the open competition announces winners in three distinct disciplines: Product Design, Brand & Communication Design, and Design Concept.

This year, 2021 saw 4,110 entries from 49 countries submitted for consideration in the Design Concept category. 61 Best of the Best and 259 winners were selected after the comprehensive evaluation process. Genesis won the coveted top Best of the Best distinction among the 259 finalists on this global stage. To quote the German judges: 

“The aristocratic elegance of the Genesis X Concept exudes harmony, combining sculpture-like beauty with athletic proportions. Our intention was to also demonstrates our vision with our automotive passion.” said the Chief Creative Officer of Genesis, Luc Donckerwolke.

The Genesis X Concept’s interior features a driver-oriented, cockpit-inspired design in which all operating systems and displays surround the driver, and which emphasizes the Beauty of White Space – an aesthetic philosophy that is uniquely Korean.

The Genesis X Concept also presents Genesis' unique and fresh perspective on sustainable luxury car designs. The Genesis X Concept also features an interior that has been accented with upcycled materials. The design emphasizes eco-friendliness by incorporating a new material with a weave-patterned fabric in parts of the seat belts, steering wheel, and airbag covers that is made up of leftover pieces of leather from the vehicle production process.

Genesis Unveils Exterior Images of the G90

The industry has been teased about the latest upcoming Genesis G90 that they plan to compete on the ultimate luxury stage against everyone else and the exterior images just released shows that they are building on the Genesis X Concept into the new Genesis product line with powerful flowing lines, fender flairs that say muscular and yet elegant.

G90 Exterior

• The Genesis’ flagship model features the most elegant interpretation of Genesis’ design identity, with a super slim Two-Line lamp realized through technical innovation
• The side profile is defined by the Parabolic Line which runs from the front to the rear highlighting the elegance of luxury sedan, while its rear is finished with unique look with the full width Two-Line lamps and lettering
• The G90 is available in a choice of sedan or long-wheelbase models, with the long-wheelbase model featuring an extended wheelbase of 190 mm (8 inches) giving more space for rear seats

Genesis calls this design philosophy Athletic Elegance.

The front features their all-new Crest Grille and their sleek Two-Line headlamps that allows the front to resemble the brands emblem. Using a Layered Architecture finish allows Genesis to take their product line to the next level in Luxury. A two G-Matrix patterns layered on top of one another creates a three-dimensional effect.

The Two-Line headlamps, feature the thinnest Two-Line design by Genesis. By intercrossing the lens of the Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) with low beam powered MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology, this ensures the headlamps thin lines while meeting required automotive brightness.

There is much that Genesis has to say about their design style of the Genesis line moving forward, but it is best to leave that here to the discussion on people's initial impressions about their iconic design elements.

Genesis has stated that the 20"-wheel designs will be exclusive to the G90.

SangYup Lee Head of Genesis Global Design had this to say about the G90:

“The G90 will redefine the flagship luxury design experience in a unique way only offered by Genesis.”

Being that this is to be their Global Luxury marque car aimed at the 1% crowd which includes corporate executives to the billionaire class this would seem to be a clear shot at Mercedes-Benz and their S-Class or EQS as Genesis will offer both ICE and EV.

GV70 Premieres

To compliment the global G70 Luxury SUV, Genesis premiered their electric GV70 at the Guangzhou Autoshow in China.

• The electric model of the GV70 sets a standard for luxury electric SUVs
• Various features, including the Crest Grille with inverted G-Matrix pattern, wheels, and bumpers, have been evolved to achieve optimal aerodynamic efficiency
• Features an All-Wheel Drive system with individual motors for front and rear wheels, generating a maximum output of 360kW (483 HP)and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque in Boost Mode

Genesis has stated that their long-term vision is to create a sustainable future through electrification that allows them to engage with youthful and energetic customers.

Standard power output for the AWD GV70 is 160kW (215 hp) and 350Nm (275 lb-ft) of torque for the front and rear motors allowing the auto to go from 0 to 100km/h (0 - 62 mph) in 4.5 seconds.

The GV70 will feature e-Terrain mode, which enables stable driving in various environments and weather conditions.

The GV70 will support 400V/800V multi-rapid charging without any need of a converter supporting today's current chargers and the future as higher power rapid chargers become the standard.

The GV70 will feature V2L (Vehicle to Load) feature that supports a 3.6kW charge, which is higher than the power supply in your home, enabling customers to conveniently use electric appliances outside of the vehicle wherever they are.

The GV70 has standard a DAS or Disconnector Actuator System which automatically connects or disconnects a motor and drive shaft, considering various driving conditions. This includes vehicle speed, driving mode, enabling a seamless switch between 2wd and AWD to maximize power use from the battery pack increasing efficiency. 

Genesis auto's come standard with ANC-R (Active Noice Control-Road) to achieve a comfortable quiet driving experience. This technology uses four sensors and eight microphones inside and out of the auto to measure and analyze road noise to create an opposite phase sound maximizing audio comfort.

The GV70 comes standard with 19" wheels.

The GV70 joins the existing family of G70, G80 and GV80 SUVs.

MotorTrend has already named the GV70 2022 SUV of the Year!

Per 2021 U.S.Tech Experience Index (TXI) by J.D. Powers is based on responses from 110,827 owners of new 2021 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership.

The TXI Study analyzes 36 technologies, which are divided into four categories: convenience; emerging automation; energy and sustainability; and infotainment and connectivity.

GV60 premieres a Luxury EV that connects the driver to the vehicle

• The GV60 is the brand's first dedicated electric vehicle model, marking Genesis' journey towards electrification.
• The vehicle builds on Genesis' design philosophy to set a new standard in sustainable luxury design.
• The GV60's athletic coupe design emphasizes a high-performance EV aesthetic.

As an entry level auto into the Genesis luxury lineup, the GV60 comes in with a 2,900mm (115 inch) wheelbase. This GV60 continues the sustainable approach to autos by using many eco-friendly and recycled materials throughout the auto. The GV60 will be leading the luxury segment in choices including exterior and interior colors.

The GV60 is available in total of 11 colors, including four new colors: São Paulo Lime, Hanauma Mint, Atacama Copper, and Atacama Copper Matte. Other colors include Vik Black, Uyuni White, Matterhorn White, Saville Silver, Carbon Metal, Melbourne Gray, and Royal Blue.

The São Paulo Lime is Genesis' new signature color for its high-performance electric vehicle as it emphasizes the active and dynamic character of the vehicle.

Hanauma Mint is a color that emphasizes eco-friendliness. The Copper color is a signature color of Genesis and will be applied to the exterior of the brand's vehicles starting with the GV60. In particular, the matte copper color has been enhanced with an improved paint that feels more like a raw copper material than conventional matte paints.

The interior is available in a total of five colors: Obsidian Black, Torrent Navy, Ash Gray/Glacier White, Monstera Green/Camel Beige and Monstera Green/Glassier White.

The GV60 is equipped with innovative technologies to provide a unique electric vehicle experience. Innovations such as Face Connect, Fingerprint Authentication System, Over-the-Air (OTA) Software Update, and Digital Key 2 enable drivers to be connected to their vehicle.

Face Connect is a feature that allows the vehicle to recognize the driver's face to lock or unlock its doors without a key. Drivers only need to touch the door handle and show their face to the camera on the B-pillar. The feature can register two faces.

The feature uses a Near Infra-Red (NIR) camera to provide accurate facial recognition under virtually any circumstances – including in the dark or when the weather is cloudy. It also leverages Deep learning technology to improve accuracy.

With Face Connect, the Head-Up-Display (HUD), driver's seat, steering wheel, side mirrors, and infotainment settings can be adjusted based on the driver's customized settings. It can be automatically connected to individual driver profiles, providing a new level of convenience that makes it seem as if the vehicle recognizes the driver

The GV60's Fingerprint Authentication System allows drivers to start and drive the car without a key and offers an authentication function for in car payments and release of Valet Mode.

The combination of both technologies will allow drivers to enjoy a brand-new experience of using only biometric information to drive their car.

With the GV60, the OTA Software Update has been further expanded to include a variety of areas.

Previously, this function was used to wirelessly update infotainment system features, such as navigation, the digital instrument cluster, and the Head-Up-Display (HUD). With the GV60, the scope of the updates has been further expanded to other key areas of the vehicle, enabling additional software updates on major electronic devices including the electric vehicle integrated control device, suspension, brakes, steering wheel, airbags, and ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems).

This allows drivers to update their vehicle's software without visiting a service center, so their vehicle is always up to date with the latest features.

In addition, the GV60 will feature a Digital Key 2 for the first time in a Genesis vehicle. This is an upgraded version of the existing digital key, enabling drivers to open the door without using the smartphone. Drivers can enter and start their car by simply touching the door handle and the digital key can be shared to up to three people.

Genesis was hoping to have a one-two punch for the U.S. with the launch of the new GV80 crossover and redesigned G80 this summer. But the COVID-19 pandemic has screwed up these plans. Automotive News reports that Genesis has pushed back the launch of both models to the fall.

A Genesis spokesman told the outlet that Genesis couldn't get the two vehicles into EPA testing to have them certified for vehicle emissions. The labs that perform the tests were shutdown due to COVID-19.

At an event is Seoul, South Korea yesterday, Genesis finally unveiled their new GV80 luxury SUV.  The overall look of the GV80 has been leaking out on the internet for months, but we finally get the full official release now.

The interior and exterior of the GV80 is designed with a common thread to give a familial look with the G70, G80, and G90.  The GV80 introduces a new quad headlamp design that will eventually filter out to the other vehicles in the Genesis lineup. The crest grille first seen on the G90 is here too. The interior of the GV80 focuses on the "beauty of white space". The designed accentuated the width and space of the of the interior with wide horizontal lines and thin air vents.  In the center is a 14.5-inch split screen infotainment display. Genesis intentionally limited the number of hard buttons and switches for aesthetic reasons. The GV80 comes in either 5-seat or 7-seat models. On up-level models, soft materials cover every surface from the inside of door handles to quilted knee pads that line the lower sides of the console.  The transmission selector is a dial in the center console. The integrated controller can be operated by an onscreen keyboard or by handwritten letters. 

Trips in the GV80 are designed to be stress-free. It gets equipped with a Road Active Noise Cancellation technology to reduce road noise. The system is one of the advanced and fast responding systems in the world. The electronically controlled suspension with road preview helps maintain a smooth ride by recognizing road imperfections ahead via a front camera.

The GV80 is based on a unique new rear-wheel drive platform, while all-wheel drive is available.  In South Korea is till be equipped with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder diesel engine while the U.S. will get a choice between two unspecified turbocharged engines. All-wheel drive models in the U.S. will be equipped with an electronic rear limited slip differential.

There is a host of safety and driving assistance technologies in the GV80 including Smart Cruise Control with Machine Learning, Highway Driving Assist II, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Blind-Spot collision Avoidance Assist, Rear cross-traffic collision avoidance, and driver attention alert warning. In the event of a collision, there are 10 airbags, including a center mounted airbag between the front occupants. 

The 2021 Genesis GV80 will go on sale in North America later this year.

Over the holiday, Genesis released some official images of the upcoming Genesis GV80 SUV.  The Genesis GV80 originally leaked out with unauthorized pictures in early December, but now we have a clearer and more official view.

The GV80 sports the large shield grille that the new 2020 Genesis G90 wears, but also includes new split headlight design. This motif is reflected in the taillight design as well.  Inside the dashboard is wide and low, to emphasis width. Most of the controls are touch sensitive and a large, wide screen rises up out of the dash for the infotainment system. The drive selector is a jewel-like rotating dial in the center console. 

The GV80 rides on a Genesis-unique rear wheel drive platform and will likely be powered by a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 making 365 horsepower or more with a possible power boost. There is also the possibility of the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder found in the Sonata N-Line that makes 290 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. The transmission will likely be the 8-speed automatic found in other Genesis vehicles. 

We will be seeing more of the GV80 as the month progresses. It goes on sale in it's home market of South Korea later this month.

The Genesis G70 just came out last year, but fast moving Genesis already has a refresh in the works. Due in the 2021 or 2022 model year, we got a hint of what may power the G70.

Someone at Genesis let it slip that the Hyundai Sonata N-Line engine would find its way into the G70 as the new base engine.  The current 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder turbo that serves as the base powerplant today produces 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The Sonata N-Line engine is a 2.5-liter turbo 4 produces 290 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, a significant boost over the current car.  This would likely carry over into the Genesis despite being oriented in a north-south fashion.  This engine could also find its way into the Genesis GV80 SUV that is due to be released next month. What will likely carry over is the current 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6, though with a possible power boost. 

What will likely not carry over is the 6-speed manual transmission. According to Genesis, the manual makes up only 4% of sales. 

Genesis has been having a hard time keeping the lid on the GV80 leaks lately. A day after someone leaked grainy pictures of the GV80 on Instagram, someone sent 4 pictures of the interior and exterior over to Car and Driver who published them for all the world to see.

The GV80 is Genesis' first entry into the hot SUV market and enters the segment currently occupied by the Mercedes Benz GLE, the Audi Q7, BMW X5, and Lincoln Aviator. It rides on the same rear wheel drive platform as the next generation G80 sedan due out next year. The main powerplant will be a 3.3-liter turbocharged V6 which in the G80 currently makes 365 horsepower, but could go up in this application. There's also the possibility of a turbo 4-cylinder or a naturally aspirated V6 as a base engine. 

It's said to have driver assistance systems similar to Telsa autopilot which would be a first for Genesis. 

For now, most of this is rumor and speculation as we wait for the official reveal next month. The GV80 is expected to go on sale Summer of 2020.

Genesis has introduced Spectrum all-inclusive leasing.  While not a subscription service like Volvo's Care or Book by Cadillac , Spectrum does include insurance and all maintenance for 3 years.   Subscription leasing services main draw is the ability of the leasee to switch vehicles at some point during the lease.

Genesis Spectrum covers the following:

• 3 years/36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance
• 3 years/36,000 miles complimentary Service Valet
• 3 years of complimentary Genesis Connected Services, including Enhanced Roadside Assistance, Destination Search powered by Voice and Remote Start with climate control

• 3 years of complimentary Annual Multimedia and Navigation Updates
• Up to $1,525 allowance for excess wear and use, excess mileage, and disposition fee for returning Genesis Finance customers

Genesis is striking a balance between the car subscription services, which have questionable financial viability, and traditional basic leasing.  Genesis Spectrum will be available first in Florida and then roll out to select markets nationwide. 

Genesis has been building itself up as a competitor to the likes of the German luxury brands, for much lower prices. But it is still missing a few items, like having some sort of crossover or SUV - something that will be launching in the coming year or so. The brand is lacking a performance variant to take on the likes of BMW's M and Mercedes' AMG. However, a comment made by Hyundai product planner Mike O’Brien hints they're looking into it.

"A big effort with the G70 was thermal management, to make sure that this car will hold u. We're building for the future. I'll just say that," said O'Brien to Road & Track.

Proper thermal management is something essential for new vehicles, but you don't normally hear an automaker talk about it except when it comes to high-performance models. This becomes more intriguing when you take into account that Albert Biermann, now the head of Hyundai's r&d division, worked previously at BMW's M division.

That note about extra cooling capacity in the G70 seems to indicate that Genesis wants to offer something sportier than the standard car, perhaps with racetrack performance in mind. An M3-fighter? That seems ambitious, but then again, so was targeting the 3-Series in the first place. And given how sweetly the current G70 drives, maybe Genesis could just pull it off.

Would such a model be badged as a G70 N? O'Brien told me it's too early to say. Genesis is still figuring out how it wants to brand any eventual performance cars.

The comment about possibly badging it as a N model is also interesting. We have reported previously that Genesis has no plans on doing a N, so it hints that Genesis may come up with its own branding for a performance model.

Some concept cars are just flights of fancy. Take for example the Genesis Essentia that bowed at the New York Auto Show earlier this year. This low-slung coupe boasted a transparent hood, set of butterfly doors, copper wheels, and electric powertrain. The concept proved to be quite popular, prompting Genesis to make a production version.

Erwin Raphael, executive director of Genesis North America told reporters at a gathering that the automaker is planning to bring the Essentia as a production model. It would be built in limited numbers and carry a hefty price tag.

"We are very committed to the Essentia. We love the car. We think the car will do very well," said Raphael.

Raphael didn't give a possible timeframe, but Manfred Fitzgerald, global head of Genesis told Motor Trend the production Essentia could arrive in 2021 or 2022. The ability to bring the car out so soon is due to almost all of the design elements on the concepts being feasible for production - the butterfly doors are one of the exceptions. Raphael mentioned the Essentia could be the sports car that Genesis has promised or a new seventh model in their growing lineup.

No mention of a powertrain for the production version. The Essentia rides on a electric architecture that Genesis is experimenting with as works to try and get an electric vehicle launched by 2021.

Genesis can't seem to make up its mind of what it wants to do with their dealer network. Back in January, the brand announced that it would be cutting back on the number of dealers eligible to sell Genesis models from 350 to 100. The 100 dealers would be located in 48 markets including Chicago and LA. The move unsurprisingly left a number of Hyundai dealers upset as they had spent a fair amount of money to make their showrooms and service areas ready for Genesis models. 

Automotive News reports that Genesis has made some changes to their dealer plans. According to a brief provided by an unnamed dealer, all Hyundai dealers will be eligible to apply to sell and service Genesis models. Those who apply will need to have separate facilities for Genesis models and will only be allowed to sell 2019 model year vehicles. The current 350 Genesis dealers can continue to sell model or take the settlement money that was part of the company's original plan announced earlier this year.

"By having more nationwide distribution, you're going to allay consumer fears that they'll be traveling and not be able to get service on their vehicle," said the unnamed dealer.

A Genesis spokesman told Automotive News that it's possible that there could be more than 100 Genesis dealers.

Genesis is wanting to distance itself from its Hyundai stablemate by its own dealer network. Currently, if you want to buy or service a Genesis model, you'll need to visit a Hyundai dealership with a discrete Genesis showroom.

According to Automotive News, Genesis is planning to cut down from the 350 dealers eligible to sell Genesis vehicles to just 100 across the U.S.

"The distribution network model where we're selling luxury cars through 840 Hyundai dealerships that are mainstream dealerships just doesn't work. Luxury customers are looking for a different experience. That's really the driving force," said Erwin Raphael, Genesis general manager.

The 100 dealerships will be in 48 markets across the U.S. including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Washington D.C. Dealers in these markets will have the first chance to apply for a franchise. If chosen, dealers will need to have facilities ready by Jan 1, 2021. Dealers who don't apply or not chosen will get a compensation package to reimburse various costs for training, equipment, and inventory.

"Some of these dealers have spent hard costs in the last year. We would reimburse them those costs. If they request us to buy the vehicles back for whatever, we'll buy those back and make them whole. Same with parts and accessories, special tools. We're not going to leave the dealers with any baggage," said Raphael.

Genesis is working on a new sports car that will be utilizing a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This information comes to us via Australian outlet Wheels who spoke with two senior executives from Hyundai at the Consumer Electronics Show.

“We are definitely doing it. I’m actually reviewing the project next week, after CES. I can’t tell you much more about it, but we are definitely doing it. We are not going autonomous for all of our cars!" said Hyundai design vice-president Luc Donckerwolke.

Hyundai's vice-chairman of research and development, Woong-chul Yang acknowledged the project, saying the coupe would be a two-seater, feature some sort of electrification, and be under the watchful eye of the N performance division.

“We are very much interested in it and as far as I’m concerned I’d love to promote that [a sportscar]. That’s something our brand needs at this time. The people working at N will be working on that, but how we put it in the N or maybe above N … it’s pretty high performance. It’s serious,” said Yang.

“We cannot say it will just be hybrid,” he said “but we will use electric motors and batteries to make it more performance. Some areas we cannot just overcome by putting a big ICE [internal combustion engine], we like to minimise as much as possible the ICE and use the best application of electric motors. That means not only efficiency but also performance can be very much optimised using both powertrains. Certainly we will put some electric powerplant in there.”

Right now, the project is still in the design stage and it will likely be years before the coupe sees the light of day.

Luxury automakers are going smaller to try and attract more buyers to their showroom. Already, Audi, BMW, Infiniti, and Mercedes-Benz have sort of vehicle and others are planning to launch one in the future. One brand you will not see join this crowd is Genesis.

“I don’t want to comment on the moves of the others. We have a pretty clear strategy planned out with what we want to do. Therefore the sedan line-up is pretty complete with the G90, G80 and G70 (pictured above),” said Manfred Fitzgerald, Genesis’ senior vice president to CarAdvice.

“Now going lower than that, like the others are – I don’t think that is in our playbook. Other brands, due to their history and where they’re going from where they are, they might think otherwise. We have so much still to accomplish, and so many white spots still on the map, if you will, so there is enough room for us to play it in the conventional way.”

But that doesn't Genesis could see something added to their passenger car lineup down the road. Fitzgerald has said previously that a sleek grand tourer could happen.

The head of Hyundai's N performance division, Albert Biermann said luxury automakers are too focused pm technology that doesn’t give value to customers.

“It’s all marketing, first of all. “How many people really buy it later on? Much of this exists for media, to give a hype, to show the technology level. But how many people really buy it later on?" said Biermann to Australian outlet Drive.

“If the tech will fail, you’re just adding the burden to the buyer, right?”

We can assume some of the tech Biermann is referring to are things like gesture controls for the infotainment system or perfume diffusers. Biermann also brought up the example of a camera that looks at the road and makes adjustments to the suspension, calling it stupid.

“In our G90 you will not find any air suspension, or active roll-bars, or active whatever. A camera sensing the road, and this stuff. It’s stupid. We have a solid Hyundai steel platform, tonnes of high-strength steel – okay, it’s a little bit heavier than the other cars – and we have adjustable shock absorbers, and that’s it. We still outpace the S-Class in the double lane-change in the Consumer Reports. We almost beat the BMW, without all the fancy stuff,” said Biermann.

Biermann explained that Genesis will be focusing on simple technologies to make them reliable. He said Hyundai's chairman, Chung Mong-koo said he wants all Hyundai and Genesis models to be “like new” after a decade on the road.

On one hand, Biermann has a point. Luxury cars are notorious for being expensive to keep on the road, partly due to all the technology equipment fitted to them. On the other hand, those technologies are a big selling point on these vehicles. Buyers use these to justify the price and they are a cool party trick to show to friends and family.

The head of Genesis, Manfred Fitzgerald reiterated that the brand would not be getting N performance models. 

“I don’t think so right now,” he said to Motoring at the unveiling of the G70.

We first reported that Genesis wasn't going to get any N models back in May.

Fitzgerald's reasoning as to why Genesis will not see any N models is interesting, to say the least. He sees electrification as the equalizer on performance, making high-performance variants kind of moot as they might not be faster than the standard models.

“Performance will not be on the same forefront of differentiator as it is today for ICEs [internal combustion engines]. Everybody is capable of doing an electric motor and putting it in a car, so the performance values will almost be the same. Nobody’s going to be interested in ‘A’ or ‘B’, so I think that will come down to a level playing field," said Fitzgerald.

“If you look at the performance value of an electric vehicle today, there are a lot of ICEs that really struggle to keep up with that.” 

The countless videos of Model S sedans smoking performance vehicles on the dragstrip attest to this train of thought. 

But many will argue that outright performance is only one part of high-performance models. There is also the character, handling, and heritage these models have. Fitzgerald acknowledges this, but he sees a change incoming. One where tech and environmental concerns take the spotlight.

“I grew up in that era… that was all right at the that time. I’m just looking forward to the future and I just don’t believe that that will still have the same power and same meaning as it did back then.”

Genesis is working on two dedicated platforms for electric vehicles that are expected to debut in 2021 or 2022.

Next Friday, Genesis will unveil the highly anticipated G70 compact luxury sedan. But why wait? Thanks to an Instagram user, we have gotten our first look at it.

the_KoreanBeast on Instagram posted two pictures of an almost production-ready G70. The first picture shows a blue G70 rolling off a truck for a photoshoot of some kind. It looks like last year's New York Concept with the flowing curves and rear-drive proportions (long front, short rear). The second picture is of the interior which features diamond-quilted leather, aluminum trim, and what appears to be a screen mounted like a table (like many Mercedes-Benz models).

Powertrains are expected to be the same as the upcoming Kia Stinger - turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder and a twin-turbo 3.3L V6. An eight-speed automatic is expected to be the only transmission on offer and all-wheel drive will be available.

Genesis is slowly building out its lineup of vehicles with a compact sedan called the G70 coming soon, along with a variety of SUVs and a coupe. We now have an idea of the possible names for these upcoming models.

Motor Authority has found various trademark filings done by Genesis for the United States Patent and Trademark Office. First up, Genesis has filed trademarks on GV60, GV70, and GV80. This is for their upcoming lineup of SUVs which first saw previewed the GV80 concept earlier this year at New York. Genesis has said their SUVs will use GV and a number for naming. 

We know that Genesis is working on a coupe that is due to arrive in 2020 and it could be wearing a GT nameplate. Genesis has filed trademark applications for GT60, GT70, GT80, and GT90.

Finally, Motor Authority found a filing for the G60 trademark. This could possibly hint at a subcompact model of some sort.

As with all stories dealing with trademarks, this doesn't mean vehicles will appear with these names. But we can count on some of the GV names appearing on future models.

As Genesis begins to find its feet and start building out its lineup, its focus will be building up credibility as a competitor to the likes of Audi, BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz. Worrying about volume and sales expectations will not be a high priority. 

“It’s about establishing a brand, establishing a credible brand,” said Genesis boss Manfred Fitzgerald to CarAdvice.

“We are in here definitely not to lose money, but I couldn’t tell you [about volume expectations] because it’s not our priority, because if I was thinking about that it would be something distracting and what might have caused the wrong answers to some of the questions here. So we are focused on showing our competence in design and also what we can deliver to the customer in terms of service and experience.”

Currently, Genesis' lineup is comprised of the G80 midsize sedan and G90 flagship. In the coming years, the brand will launch the G70 compact sedan, two crossovers, and a GT coupe.

One vehicle you will not see coming from Genesis is a supercar or a high-end performance car.

“I might not be your typical marketing guy, I don’t believe in target groups, I believe in doing great models and creating great products – and hopefully there will be many people that love them and fall in love with them and that’s it. If you need a halo vehicle? That’s not our spiel.”

With Hyundai and Kia working on their own performance lineups, it should come as a no surprise that Genesis is planning a line of high-performance vehicles. But Car and Driver reports that Genesis isn't sure what model should get the treatment first.

“On the Genesis lineup, the whole thing is still in discussion. Before [the lineup is] fixed, we’re not making any decisions on performance cars—the lineup needs to be clear, and it’s still moving and fluid,” said Albert Biermann, Hyundai-Kia’s head of performance development.

One type of vehicle that has been thrown out are SUVs. Biermann explained that stricter fuel economy and emission standards have put the question as to whether these high-performance vehicles will stick around in the coming years. Also, he doesn't see a market for these vehicles.

Not helping matters is trying to figure out what would power these high-performance models: a internal combustion engine or hybrid powertrain.

“The road map for the next three or four years is clear, but at some point you have to make sure that, with future mobility and all the emissions targets, that you have the technology out there. A lot of discussion is going on about the timing of switching away from pure internal combustion to hybrid or plug-in hybrid. That’s the same for the high-performance applications,” said Biermann.

Car and Driver doesn't have a guess as to what could be the first Genesis vehicle to get amped up, but we bet the upcoming G70 is a safe possibility.

Genesis is still in the process of building itself out, but they have revealed that there will be an electric vehicle from them in the future.

"We will definitely go as Genesis brand down the road of alternative propulsions and it is very, very obvious that EV is definitely on the map," said Genesis Senior Vice President Manfred Fitzgerald at the Busan Auto Show in South Korea.

"I think full electric cars will be the future in the auto industry."

Fitzgerald didn't elaborate on what could the EV look like or a possible release date. But we do know that Hyundai is working on a 250 mile EV for 2020, possibly giving a base for a Genesis model. We also know that this EV won't be appearing till after 2020 thanks to a leaked roadmap showing off Genesis' planned lineup. There is no EV on the map, leading us to believe it will come down the road.

By 2020, Genesis will have six models in its lineup. We already have seen the G80 and G90 due out later this year, and gotten a sneak peek into the compact G70 sedan. There's also two SUVs and a new coupe. But we didn't know when these models would be coming out until a slide was leaked out.

The Korean Car Blog got their hands on an image showing off a presentation slide with a roadmap of their models. We're assuming this is from a meeting with dealers getting briefed on the Genesis brand. The first interesting thing of note deals with the G70. We thought it was still a couple of years out, but the slide shows that it will be at dealers next year.

Next are the two SUVs. Genesis looks to be offering a compact and midsize SUV, with the midsize arriving first. The Korean Car Blog speculates it could be as early as 2018. Then we get to the coupe arriving by 2020. It's assumed that it will be based on the G70 sedan, but no details have appeared on this.

Genesis is following in the footsteps of other luxury automakers by planning a number of plug-in models. Speaking with Automotive News, Hyundai Motor America' CEO Dave Zuchowski said Genesis and Hyundai are working on a number of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Zuchowski explained the brands see this a stepping stone to hydrogen vehicles.

"Some of those [plug-in hybrids] will take the form of the Genesis side of our business. We believe alternative-propulsion engines are going to be really important -- even more important in the luxury market than they are in the mainstream market," said Zuchowski.

Zuchowski kept quiet on Genesis vehicles will get the plug-in treatment. But considering Genesis' lineup in the near future will include will include a couple of SUVs and a small compact sedan to join the G80 midsize sedan and G90 flagship, we wouldn't be surprised if one of those SUVs and the G90 get the plug-in option.

Hyundai is a company on the move. Hyundai announced they were spinning off Genesis into a dedicated luxury brand just over a week ago. Then a couple of days ago, Genesis showed renderings of the Genesis G90, the brand's first car and the replacement for the Hyundai Equus. The G90 will have it's world debut next month in South Korea, so we'll likely see the car in the States in January at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

With all of that activity, it should be no surprise that a spy photographer already picked up the Genesis G90 undergoing testing. From the pictures of the interior, the G90 has a decidedly S-Class look to it, with a large embedded center screen and rows of horizontal metallic buttons.

There is also indications of some powertrain changes coming with a new 3.3 liter turbo V6 in both two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive formats while the 5.0 liter V8 gets all-wheel drive. The Hyundai 3.3T specs leaked out last winter and indicated around 365hp with 379 lb-ft of torque along a very flat torque curve that runs at peak from 1500 rpm to 4500 rpm. The 5.0 V8 is rumored to get an upgrade in power as well.
