Detroit Auto Show: Leaks From Honda, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen

We're just a day away from the Detroit Auto Show starting and the leaks have been pouring out. Four automakers: Honda, Infiniti, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen have had their showings prematurely revealed within the past week.

We'll start with Honda and their Urban SUV Concept. The concept is based on the Fit and has a sporty and dynamic SUV profile.

Next is the Infinti Q50 (Yes, the successor to the G Sedan) which was leaked by Infiniti Canada on their site before being taken down. Luckily someone saved an image of the site and shared it. The Q50 has a similar design to the current M (or should I say Q70) with a large front grille, upswept headlights, and a hood featuring flowing ridges and peaks.

Mercedes-Benz has plans to reveal the new CLA at Detroit. That didn't stopped someone from leaking a shot of the production CLA earlier this week. The picture shows the production model is much like the concept shown last year.

Finally there is Volkswagen who will be showing a concept seven-seat crossover alongside the Passat Performance concept. The leaked picture shows the crossover having a mix of Volkswagen Toureg and Audi Q7 in the design.

We'll have information and pictures when these vehicles are officially shown at Detroit (or Geneva in the CLA's case) this week.

Honda Clarity Kicks Advertising into High Gear!
While on YouTube I discovered a whole new crop of videos to help sell the Honda Clarity Hydrogen auto. Interesting that they went again to PES a video man that has a reputation for stop motion commercials. This time they went with kids singing and the heads one has to figure represent the hydrogen molecules in the tank. Honda YouTube
Additional commercials also made by PES for Honda's big push of the Clarity Hydrogen auto:
As one follows the links from YouTube for the Honda Clarity it is amazing to see all the other videos too such as the one below on how a fuel cell works.
As I learned from the RoadShow video, the Clarity is in essence an EV with a Hydrogen Generator to give you a 366 mile range. What I was surprised by is that both the Toyota Mirai and this clarity are lease only auto's with a stated value of $60,000 more or less and free hydrogen for the first 3 years.
Makes one wonder WHY, WHY would you want such an UGLY auto with such a high monthly lease cost when there are far better options out there. I love my alternative auto's and EV's are rocking it more and more, so for an energy upside down auto, do we really need these?
One Positive is that this is the first time I actually like the dash and the tablet interface for the auto with proper sized buttons to control everything else.
Want to know more about Hydrogen Auto's, this is a great video that covers what some think is the future for the auto industry.

Smart Car Gas to end 2017, Pure EV only for 2018!

USA Today has stated that Mercedes-Benz has notified their Smart Car sellers that 2017 is the end of the Gas powered auto. Smart Car will live on but only in Pure EV mode with a complete lineup. Mercedes is quoted as saying they have decided that the three-cylinder, 70 HP powered auto that averaged 40 mpg just did not make sense any more in today's age of cheap gas and net battery tech. Smart Car only sold 6,211 autos in the US last year, down 17% from 2015 and Car2go has notified SmartCar that they will no longer be using their car in their program instead moving over to the CLA Sedan and GLA crossover as their customers are asking for. This alone which accounted for the largest amount of Smart Car sales would indicate the days are numbered.
As such, Mercedes-Benz will show off a new selection of EV Smart Cars some time this year and only have EV models for sale in 2018.

The blame game over the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal continues with the former chairman Ferdinand Piëch saying that Volkswagen's top brass knew about the cheating months before it came to light.
German newspaper Bild reported yesterday that Piëch told prosecutors that he informed Martin Winterkorn and four other members of Volkswagen's supervisory board about the possible cheating with their diesel engines. The other members include,
Stephan Weil, prime minister of the German state of Lower Saxony Bernd Osterloh, works council chief Berthold Huber, former IG Metall union head Wolfgang Porsche These members have "unequivocally and emphatically" reject the allegations laid forth by Piëch. Volkswagen is none to happy about these accusations either and is considering possible legal options.
"The Board of Management will carefully weigh the possibility of measures and claims against Mr. Piëch," the company said in a statement.
A spokeswoman for Braunschweig prosecutors declined to comment when asked by Reuters about this story.
It should be noted there is a bit of bad blood between Piëch and Volkswagen. In April 2015, Piëch was ousted as chairman for Volkswagen after a power struggle between him and Winterkorn. This might be Piëch wanting to settle some old scores and cause more problems for the company he once led.

Automakers have been downsizing their engines and adding turbochargers to improve fuel economy while retaining power from larger displacement engines. But is there a point where this trend doesn't make sense anymore? Volkswagen believes that time is coming very soon.
"The trend of downsizing is over," said Herbert Diess, Volkswagen's chairman.
"Emissions tend to go up as engines get smaller."
This is due to smaller engines needing to work much harder to produce the power figures of higher displacement engines, which in turns causes more fuel to be used. Currently, small displacement engines do very well in the European fuel economy and emission tests. But the test results have come under intense scrutiny as they don't match up to real-world tests. In a few years, the European Union will introduce new procedures that include tests in the lab and real-world. The new tests could put this trend at a standstill.
Diess said they would continue to offer the turbocharged 1.0L three-cylinder and 1.6L turbodiesel, but wouldn't go any smaller in the future.

I have one co-worker who has been a thorn in my side for the past 6 months.... but I have to admit that when I need something done that is in his area of expertise, he goes after it like an angry rabid chihuahua and gets it done.
