Toyota to Upgrade NUMMI

Posted Image

Japan's top carmaker Toyota says it is upgrading a US plant equally owned with ailing General Motors, which has been negotiating an alliance with the French-Japanese Renault-Nissan group.

But Toyota Motor Corp., widely seen as set to overtake GM as the world's top vehicle maker, denied that the new investment in the California plant was aimed at strengthening its partnership with the US car giant.

Why does every damned article I read for the past year have to begin by reminding the reader that Toyota is pre-ordained to overtake GM as #1. Last year they were content with "largest vehicle manufacturer by market valuation," but that apparently didn't make the f'ing media happy. Now, they've moved onto creating the news once again. Self-fulfilling prophecy, wouldn't you say?

Tell enough people the sky is falling and they will eventually make it fall.

More and more I am in awe of Japan Inc.

I couldn't agree with you more. I wonder how much of the stock of these news companies is owned by Japanese banks.

Don't forget the word in-front of GM, "ailing."  GM is never "recovering" (even though the stock price has almost doubled in the past 52 weeks), "feeling better", or even in the mood to "go for a walk."  The press loves to bring out the dead, whether you're breathing or not.

Actually, I've seen a few very positive comments about GM lately. While you're still generally correct about the media's view, it's not quite "never".

BTW, enjoyed the Monty Python reference.
