There's no reason an Impala has to eat G8 sales. What does GM offer for a large car under $27,000? Nothing. (No, the Impala isn't that big.) What's to stop them from making a sub-$27,000 Impala for folks like me that need a big cheap car that can haul five people and all their stuff without breaking a sweat?

Well, the current Lucerne's base price is under $27k, but don't expect that to be the case for much longer. For a no-frills large GM sedan, there you go.

Once again, a Zeta-based Impala is probably just cost prohibitive. A large Epsilon II sedan would be less expensive to build.
