  1. 2007 HYUNDAI ENTOURAGE MAKES WORLD DEBUT AT CHICAGO AUTO SHOW More Safety, More Room, More Value Than Honda Odyssey Entourage Packs Unsurpassed Safety, Quality and Convenience into a Minivan CHICAGO, February 8, 2006 – The new 2007 Hyundai Entourage minivan made its world debut today at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show. With its unprecedented combination of unsurpassed standard safety, comfort and convenience matched with a powerful engine and outstanding quality backed by Hyundai’s 10-year, 100,000-mile warranty, this new star in Hyundai’s lineup is sure to attract a following. Entourage is the first vehicle with the Hyundai Hideaway™ third-row seat, a simple-to-use 60/40 split fold-into-the floor seat offering flexibility for up to seven passengers. At 202 inches long and 78.1 inches wide, the new Entourage is truly full-size. In fact, these larger dimensions and efficient packaging deliver an interior volume of 172 cubic feet – more than Honda Odyssey. Hyundai packed the all-new Entourage with the industry’s most effective safety technologies, including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), anti-whiplash active front head restraints and six airbags including side air curtains, which help protect occupants in all three rows during side impacts. Entourage is expected to earn the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) top five-star crash test rating for front and side impacts. UNSURPASSED SAFETY The all-new 2007 Entourage continues Hyundai’s leadership in standardizing the industry’s most effective safety technologies. The new Entourage features six standard airbags, including side air curtains for all three rows of seats. The combination of side and curtain airbags, which help protect the head and body during side impacts, can reduce fatalities by more than 45 percent, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In addition, all Entourage trim levels come standard with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), one of the industry’s most effective life-saving technologies. ESC compares the driver’s intended course with the vehicle’s actual response. ESC then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces engine power as needed in certain driving circumstances to help correct understeer or oversteer. IIHS studies show vehicles equipped with ESC experience 56 percent fewer fatalities in single-vehicle crashes. Entourage joins Santa Fe, Tucson, Sonata and Azera as vehicles in Hyundai’s growing lineup with standard Electronic Stability Control – a commitment to this sophisticated and effective automotive safety technology that is unmatched by any other non-luxury automotive brand. Front (11.7-in.) and rear (11.9-in.) disc brakes are standard and are coupled with a four-channel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) that includes Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) to optimize brake performance even with differing vehicle loading. All seating positions feature three-point seatbelts and adjustable head restraints. Front seat active head restraints help prevent whiplash by automatically reducing the space between a front occupant’s head and the head restraint during a rear collision, and are highly recommended by safety-focused organizations such as IIHS. Convenient Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) points allow child seats to be secured in the second- and third-row seats. Additional standard safety equipment includes a high-line tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), which alerts drivers if one or more tires are under inflated. An illuminated readout on the dash lets drivers know the exact tire(s) needing inflation so corrective action can be taken. EFFICIENT INTERIOR The all-new 2007 Entourage is one of the most comfortable and convenient minivans on the market. Hyundai accomplished this by appointing Entourage with a refined interior design and highly desired standard features. The new 2007 Entourage offers power dual rear sliding doors with power windows, adjustable conversation mirror and a foldaway center tray table with four cupholders standard. All Entourages have a premium HVAC system with dual front climate controls and separate second-row controls and rear-seat vents for both the second- and third-row passengers. For drivers, there are folding sideview mirrors, tilt wheel steering and optional power adjustable pedals. The interior is finished with a two-tone color scheme with woodgrain or metalgrain accents. Luxurious leather seats are standard in the Limited model, as are a power tailgate, heated front seats and an electroluminescent instrument cluster. A rear-seat entertainment system with an eight-inch LCD monitor, backup warning sensors and Infinity® AM/FM/CD-changer/MP3 audio system with Logic 7® surround sound take passenger comfort to the next level. Adding to Entourage’s space and versatility, flip and fold second-row seats provide easy access to the Hyundai Hideaway™ third-row seat. The Hyundai Hideaway™ third-row seat is a new, simple-to-operate 60/40 split fold-into-the-floor design that is standard on all models. V6 ENGINE Entourage’s modern all-aluminum 3.8-liter DOHC 24-valve standard V6 engine produces 242 horsepower and 251 lb.-ft. of torque placing it at the top of the minivan segment. Entourage has more standard horsepower than the Ford Freestar, Chevrolet Uplander and Dodge Caravan, and more torque than the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna and Dodge Grand Caravan. It also features timing chains with no scheduled maintenance (instead of the belts found on many V6s, which must be replaced at set intervals). Even with its impressive output, the Entourage is also environmentally friendly and achieves Ultra Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) certification levels. Married to the technically advanced V6 is an equally advanced five-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC® manual control. The transmission offers smooth shifts and a wide spread of ratios that ideally suit the engine’s characteristics and includes an overdrive lock-up torque converter for quiet, efficient highway cruising. Drivers can access the SHIFTRONIC® feature by moving the gear selector into a separate gate. Pushing the selector forward or pulling it rearward will shift the transmission up or down sequentially, adding to driver control. A clear LCD readout on the instrument panel shows the gear that’s in use. BOLD DESIGN Entourage continues the dramatic new styling theme introduced on the all-new 2007 Santa Fe – assertive, refined and confident. Dropped fenders, a sophisticated hood crease and a bold chrome grille give Entourage an assertive face. Large jeweled projector beam front headlights and optional fog lights complete the front-end styling. The dropped fenders continue into the beltline for a uniform side profile. Standard integrated functional roof rack rails and color-keyed bodyside moldings with chrome inserts complement the dropped fender bodylines. A rear spoiler with integrated brake light, chrome accents and combination tail lights repeat the design theme from up front. PURPOSE-BUILT PLATFORM The Entourage rides on a purpose-built unibody minivan platform with a 118.9-inch wheelbase and a 66.3-inch track width that is longer and wider than the competition. This chassis was specifically designed to deliver a rewarding ride. Thanks to the suspension geometry and wide track width (which enables greater turn angles), Hyundai engineers were able to give Entourage an impressive, tight turning diameter of 39.6 feet for parking situations and U-turns. Entourage’s four-wheel independent suspension system is comprised of MacPherson struts with coil springs and a stabilizer bar in the front, while the rear suspension uses a multi-link design with coil springs and a stabilizer bar. Engine-speed-sensitive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering also contributes to the Entourage’s solid handling dynamics. Entourage models come with 16-inch steel wheels and 225/70 R16 tires or 17-inch alloy wheels fitted to 235/60 R17 tires. HYUNDAI VALUE A well-equipped 2007 Entourage, with standard Electronic Stability Control, six airbags, anti-whiplash active front head restraints, TPMS, 3.8-liter V6 engine, roof rack rails, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry, AM/FM/CD player, front wiper deicer and tri-zone climate controls system will be priced at $23,7951, more than $1,500 less than a Honda Odyssey LX. Add in the assurance provided by America’s Best Warranty™ and it’s clear that minivan shoppers have a new gold standard minivan to consider. MODEL LINEUP The Hyundai Entourage comes in three distinct trim levels: The well-equipped GLS, high-value SE and premium Limited. ENTOURAGE GLS Entourage GLS comes well-equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 engine, five-speed SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission, ESC with traction control system, ABS, TPMS, 16-inch wheels, chrome-insert bodyside moldings, bodycolor power side mirrors, power windows, power door locks and remote keyless entry. 2. MITSUBISHI INTRODUCES NEW 258-HP GALANT RALLIART TO SPEARHEAD RESTYLED, REFINED 2007 GALANT MODEL LINE CHICAGO, Feb. 8, 2006 – Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) has introduced the new high-performance 2007 Galant Ralliart model at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show. Powered by a 258-hp 3.8-liter V-6 engine and equipped with sport suspension, 18-inch wheels and exclusive exterior styling and interior features, the new Ralliart model spearheads the restyled Galant midsize sedan line for 2007. The new Galant models arrive in Mitsubishi dealerships this summer. The revised styling of all 2007 Galant models is highlighted by a sophisticated new front-end treatment. Interior design and materials have been enhanced, and ride and handling have been refined to provide greater comfort and a more engaging driving experience. Standard side curtain air bags have been added to the comprehensive safety package, which also includes advanced front air bags with occupant sensors and front seat-mounted side-impact air bags. “The 2007 Galant Ralliart makes a resounding statement about Mitsubishi’s “Driven to Thrill” performance and design with its a bold, modern, and a uniquely Mitsubishi interpretation of what a midsize performance sedan should be,” said Dave Schembri, executive vice president for sales and marketing for Mitsubishi Motors North America. “The Galant Ralliart shows the direction that we’re taking both the Galant -- and the brand.” Capable of accelerating from zero-to-60 mph in about seven seconds, the 2007 Galant Ralliart will challenge some of the best sport sedans while delivering renowned Mitsubishi value. New Styling, New Choices All Galant models for 2007 are identified by an updated, more sophisticated front end design featuring a new grille with chrome surround, plus a new front fascia and new bumper. The rear bumper fascia is also revised in line with the front appearance. The Galant Ralliart is distinguished by a sport mesh grille two-tone color bumpers, color-key side air dams, 18-inch alloy wheels and Ralliart badges. Its front end also stands apart from other Galant models with projector-style four-bulb ellipsoid headlamps. With the arrival of the Galant Ralliart for 2007, the GTS model assumes a more luxury-leaning role in the lineup, in place of the previous LS model. The Galant DE and ES models are powered by a 160-hp MIVEC-enhanced 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine teamed to a four-speed automatic transmission with Sportonic®, which enables manual shift control when desired. Ralliart: A Complete Grand Touring Performance Package Galant Ralliart has the heart of a high-performance GT car – the Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, to be precise. Its 3.8-liter V-6 produces 258 hp at 5,700 rpm and 258 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 4,500 rpm, making it one of the most powerful import brand sport sedans in the segment. The Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electronic Control system (MIVEC) helps optimize power and engine efficiency across a broad engine speed range. As an example of MIVEC’s benefits, the large-displacement V-6 is already producing 220 lb.-ft. of torque at just 2,000 rpm, giving the Galant Ralliart “right now” off-the-line response. The Galant Ralliart V-6 is matched to a new five-speed automatic transmission that features Sportronic. The GTS continues with a 230-hp version of the 3.8-liter V-6 and also gains the new five speed automatic transmission with Sportronic. The Galant Ralliart features its own, higher-rate springs and dampers and is exclusively equipped with a 21-mm rear stabilizer bar. The Ralliart’s 235/45R-18 all-season tires are mounted to 18 x 8-inch 7-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. Inside, Galant Ralliart combines exclusive design and luxurious equipment, including standard perforated leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, an automatic climate control system, a power glass sunroof with sunshade and Homelink™ transmitter with auto- dimming rear view mirror. Aluminum pedals and Micro-delta print accent panels further distinguish the Ralliart interior. Galant Ralliart Ready for Driving – and “Driving Music” Mitsubishi is the first auto manufacturer to factory-install the Rockford Acoustic Design™ premium audio system, making it standard equipment on the 2007 Galant Ralliart. This high-end audio system – one of the most advanced on the market – provides AM/FM/CD/MP3 playback capability, including a 6-disc in-dash CD changer. The linear 8-channel amplifier produces 360 watts continuous at less than 0.02% THD. A dedicated channel drives each loudspeaker for the ultimate in sonic control. Silk dome tweeters mounted on the leading edge of the dash produce a natural multi-dimensional soundstage. Digital Signal Processing optimizes output to provide user-selectable listening environments, including “Normal,” “Studio,” “Club” and “Concert.” The Rockford Acoustic Design™ premium audio system is also available for Galant ES and GTS. Mitsubishi’s partnership with Rockford began in 2006 with the Rockford-Fosgate™ Punch audio system offered in the Eclipse coupe (and now standard in the 2007 Eclipse Spyder). The good sounds continue in Galant Ralliart with the standard SIRIUS™ satellite radio package with six months’ free subscription. This package, too, is available for the ES and GTS models. A new DVD navigation system with 7-inch touch screen is available as a factory option on the Galant Ralliart and GTS models. Galant Ralliart without the optional navigation system features a standard 4.9-inch color LCD display that provides outside temperature and a compass, as well as a trip computer with fuel mileage information, a door alarm indicator, maintenance recorder, and calendar. The display also provides an interface that allows owners to customize many of the vehicle’s interior functions. Source: Autoblog

  6. 2007 Nissan Quest Debuts at Chicago Auto Show [Feb. 8, 06] Just three years after its introduction in mid-2003, the Nissan Quest minivan has undergone a major transformation for the 2007 model year – complete with a redesigned interior, refined exterior appearance, new high quality materials and attention to detail, and an array of new available features including Bluetooth® Hands-Free Phone System and an in-dash CD6 with MP3 playback and auxiliary audio input. Unchanged is Quest’s position as the most distinctive and original minivan on the market today. Quest also remains one of the roomiest front-wheel drive minivans in its segment, with the widest opening doors for easy access to the standard Fold-Away 2nd and 3rd row seats. For 2007, the 3rd row seat now offers integrated auto-folding headrests and spring assist for easier operation. “When Quest was introduced, it redefined the segment with its emphasis on combining car-like performance, innovative style, sporty appearance and exceptional practicality and versatility,” said Brad Bradshaw, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division. “The enhancements for 2007, which represent one of the largest mid-cycle investments in Nissan history, make the Quest more flexible and accommodating than ever – keeping pace with the evolving needs and desires of minivan users.” The new 2007 Quest, which makes its world debut at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show, is scheduled to go on sale at Nissan dealers nationwide in spring 2006. An All-New Instrument Panel For 2007 The most visible change to the 2007 Quest is the instrument panel, which has been totally redesigned to provide a more traditional layout than the original. The large gauges have been moved directly in front of the driver, from the previous central location. The shifter lever for Quest’s standard 5-speed automatic transmission is located in the center portion of the instrument panel, below the revised, available center-mounted 7.0-inch color information display screen. An advanced DVD-based Nissan Navigation System with 7.0-inch color display is also offered. In addition, the new instrument panel features a revised Human Machine Interface (HMI) design for the available dual-zone HVAC controls, an integrated sunglass holder and lower center storage compartment. The right side of the instrument panel includes a new, larger glove compartment. Another addition for 2007 is an available fixed center console between the front seats (offered with Technology Package). The center console includes a large storage box with a hidden lower compartment. Quest models without the fixed center console feature a front row folding tray table. New trim – in either a faux wood style or brushed metallic finish – has been added, along with chrome bezels surrounding gauges and other trim pieces. “The new Quest interior provides a great space for the driver, with an incredible attention to the layout and the look, tactile feel and smooth operation of all the controls and switches,” said Bradshaw. “There’s a real sense of the enhanced quality that comes through both visually and tactilely.” Quest also excels in terms of space management, with its long 124.0-inch wheelbase, 77.6-inch width and 67.3-inch front and rear track providing an overall interior volume of 211.9 cubic feet, one of the largest interior volumes of any front-wheel drive minivan. Quest's sliding door openings measure 33.8 inches, the longest in class. Special attention is also paid to front seat dimensions, with large first row shoulder room. The seats themselves are a “furniture-style” design, reinforcing the design concept of an urban loft. A new “Chili” color is offered with the leather-appointed seats. The 2007 Quest continues to advance the concept of flexibility and spontaneity. The Fold-Away 2nd and 3rd row seats, with the 3rd row folding flat, do not require the owner to remove the seats in order to create a large, fully usable storage area. The Quest's ample length and width allow for carrying large items on the floor with the rear door closed. The Quest’s 2nd row seats fold down and drop forward to the floor. The 3rd row, which has been totally rethought for 2007, easily folds into a storage well in the floor. Unlike the previous design, which included removable headrests, the new 3rd row seat design includes integrated headrests that fold down with the simple pull of a strap. The rear seat then moves forward and down – a simple three-step movement that, with the addition of the new spring assist, can be completed with one hand. The sliding side doors and rear door are available with remote power operation for added convenience, with the switch for the automatic closing power rear door located on the upper left D-pillar for ease of use. Another unique highlight of the Quest interior is the available SkyViewÔ glass-paneled roof, which utilizes roof-mounted glass panels for the 2nd and 3rd rows that (along with the front sunroof) help enhance the use of natural light throughout the vehicle. A full-length rear overhead console is available with the SkyView glass-paneled roof. It creates aircraft-like interior comfort zones with personal reading lamps and air vents. The rear overhead console houses the Quest's available DVD Mobile Entertainment System's single or dual 8.0-inch fold-down color display screens. The front overhead console has been revised for 2007 to include the rear HVAC controls. The new Chili interior color is in addition the previous Gray and Beige interior colors, which are now slightly darker in tone. “The interior environment is once again a true highlight of the Quest design for 2007, creating a third living space that is comfortable, convenient and totally in synch with the needs of today’s active family lifestyles,” said Bradshaw. A Refined Exterior for 2007 Quest’s breakthrough exterior addresses consumer concerns about traditional minivans' conservative imagery. The contemporary body imparts a look of high quality and is marked by an arching roofline that transitions seamlessly off of the A-pillar, a strong shoulder that adds dimension to the body sides, well-defined wheel forms that have a minimal gap with the tire sidewalls and a fluid gesture in the beltline that starts low off of the headlights and kicks up toward the rear of the vehicle. New for 2007 is an attractive, flowing Nissan-signature grille and a new front bumper fascia that is more angular and more aggressive than the previous version. The rear combination taillights have been redesigned and side sills have been added on the 3.5SE model. The roof rack, while retaining the previous dimensions and high level of utility, is now more squared and has a new satin-look finish. The Quest’s door handles are chrome, instead of body color, and new chrome accents enhance the clean, modern look of the vehicle. One new exterior color is offered for 2007 – Chestnut – among eight total colors Quest’s available wheels have been redesigned for 2007, including the base wheel covers and the 16-inch and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Non-Traditional Minivan Performance As expected from the company behind the popular Nissan 350Z sports car and Maxima sedan, the 2006 Quest offers responsive acceleration and handling. Every 2007 Quests is equipped with a standard 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine based on Nissan's VQ35 engine series, which as been named one of “The 10 Best Engines” by Ward’s magazine for 12 straight years. For use in the Quest, the 3.5-liter V6 is tuned to produce 240 horsepower* and 242 lb-ft torque. The engine design includes state-of-the-art design features, such as Continuous Variable Valve Timing Control System (CVTCS), microfinished crankshaft and camshaft, molybdenum-coated pistons and sequential multi-point electronic fuel injection. The engines are assembled at Nissan\'s Decherd, Tenn. engine assembly facility. The Quest engine is matched with a smooth, responsive, standard 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive. The transmission has been improved with a wider gear ratio for 2007 for increased acceleration performance. A Traction Control System (TCS) is also standard and Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) is standard on the 3.5SE and available on 3.5SL models. Another element that is often overlooked in the minivan segment is responsive handling and ride comfort. Utilizing Nissan's advanced FF-L (for Front engine, Front-wheel drive, Large) platform, also found on the popular Nissan Altima, Murano crossover SUV and Maxima, the 2007 Quest features a 4-wheel independent suspension with a rear multi-link design and front and rear stabilizer bars. The Quest is offered with 16x6.5 wheels and P225/65R16 tires on 3.5, 3.5S and 3.5SL models and 17x6.5 aluminum-alloy wheels and P225/60R17 tires on the 3.5SE model. Also available are P225/700/R480a Michelin® PAX® System run-flat tires with 19x6.5 wheels. A sensor-type Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) is standard on all 2007 Quests. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering is also standard, along with 4-wheel vented disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD). The Quest’s noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) isolation has been improved for 2007 and both the steering feel and ride quality have been recalibrated to provide a more comfortable driving experience. Safety and Security Safety is a particularly important part of the minivan purchase decision and the Quest was developed with a strong focus on both active safety – through the responsive engine, suspension and braking technologies – and passive safety through a comprehensive set of passive restraint systems. Standard Quest safety equipment includes Zone Body construction with front and rear crumple zones and occupant zone and the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), which utilizes crash zone sensor and advanced occupant weight sensing capability to control front passenger air bag deployment. Front seat Active Head Restraints and Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS) are standard. Also standard are head curtain supplemental air bags to help protect 1st, 2nd and 3rd row outboard occupants in side-impact collisions and 3-point seat belts and height-adjustable head restraints for all seating positions. Supplemental front-seat side-impact air bags for thorax protection are standard on 3.5SE and optional on 3.5SL. Quest also offers a LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tether for CHildren) child seat anchorage system, child safety rear door locks and a Vehicle Security System (VSS). RearView Camera and Rear Sonar System Also available for 2007 is a RearView Monitor system (standard on 3.5SE, optional on 3.5SL), that utilizes a small camera mounted near the rear license plate that projects a view of what’s directly behind the vehicle to the Vehicle Information Center display screen. The system is activated anytime reverse gear is engaged and helps enhance the driver’s rearward view. Quest also includes a standard Rear Sonar System (except 3.5), which provides an audible beep when approaching solid objects while backing up. Special Attention to Quality “Another focus of the 2007 Quest redesign has been in the areas of quality, both manufacturing and perceived quality,” said Bradshaw. During the development process, the design, engineering, manufacturing and supplier teams gathered for nearly a year in a special “war room” at the Nissan Technical Center in Farmington Hills, Mich. The goal was to enhance both the design and communications processes while the team tackled both large items (the all-new instrument panel, for example) and small details (thickness and finish of the rear armrests). “The result of the team’s efforts is a new Quest that is not only well-built, but looks and feels like a quality vehicle the moment you approach it or open a door,” said Bradshaw. A Range of Available Models and Packages Once again for 2007, Quest is available in four well-equipped models: 3.5, 3.5S, 3.5SL and 3.5SE – each offering an array of standard and available equipment, including 10 cupholders, Remote Keyless Entry system, front row mood lighting, four 12-volt power points. Other standard equipment includes “child friendly” B-pillar assist grips, adjustable front row seat belt upper anchors and numerous storage compartments located throughout the Quest. Available equipment includes leather-appointed 1st and 2nd row seating, satellite radio with choice of XM® or SiriusÔ providers, an advanced Nissan navigation system, a 265-watt 10-speaker Bose® audio system, HomeLink® Universal Transceiver and Michelin® PAX® System with machined 19-inch alloy wheels and Michelin tires with run-flat technology. A number of options and packages are offered for 2007, including the Technology Package, with front row center console, satellite radio, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System (3.5SL adds RearView Monitor, dual-zone climate controls and auto on/off headlights); the Navigation and PAX® Package, with GPS navigation, 19-inch alloy wheels, run-flat tires, in-floor cargo organizer (replaces the spare tire) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (3.5SL models only); SL Upgrade Package, with power left hand door, puddle lamps and supplemental front side-impact air bags; and the SL Premium Package, with leather-appointed interior, heated seats, Bose audio system and DVD entertainment system. “With the new 2007 Quest, we’re staying ahead of the segment, while becoming more accessible to a wider audience,” said Bradshaw. “It’s a synergy of style and flexibility that is unmatched by any other minivan on the market. 7. Is Blue Devil Alive? Chevy Performance Might Be Heating Up By WES RAYNAL AutoWeek | Published 02/08/06, 12:20 pm et Chevy officials at the Chicago auto show aren't comfirming that a higher-performance version of the Corvette Z06, called Blue Devil, is under development. But they certainly are not downplaying the possibilities. "We'd love to have it," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. Sources say the Blue Devil might go with a supercharged version of the Z06's 7.0-liter V8, producing upward of 600 hp. Look for lightweight carbon fiber body parts to reduce weight to about 2900 pounds. Pricing will likely start somewhere around $100,000 if and when the car makes production in 2007. "My guess is we're going to find a way to do something beyond the Z06, that would be at a much higher price point, and which would compete with some of the leading high-performance cars of the world,'' GM vice chairman Bob Lutz told us last July. One other hot rumor swirling around Detroit: Camaro produciton has been moved forward, from 2009 to 2008. Link: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...E/60208005/1063

  9. HYBRIDS COME OUT ON TOP IN INTELLICHOICE.COM’S 2006 “BEST OVERALL VALUE OF THE YEAR” AWARDS - Ford Escape Hybrid and Toyota Highlander Hybrid Join Toyota Prius at Top of Automotive Value Chain - Honda Odyssey Sweeps Minivan Category - CHICAGO AUTO SHOW, Chicago, IL, February 8, 2006—PRIMEDIA’s IntelliChoice.com, the online source for automotive ownership cost and value analysis, today announced the results of its “Best Overall Value of the Year” awards for model year 2006. And for the first time, two hybrid SUVs join the reigning hybrid champion Toyota Prius and four other vehicles in giving American carbuyers the best value for their money. IntelliChoice.com’s “Best Overall Value of the Year” awards recognize vehicles whose cost of ownership is significantly lower than that of peer models and provides a quick reference to finding vehicles that promise the best return on investment. A listing of this year’s winners and additional information on the awards can only be found online at www.IntelliChoice.com. “Hybrids continue to refute the argument that their cost of ownership fails to justify their slightly higher sticker prices,” said James Bell, publisher of IntelliChoice.com. “Perhaps more importantly, this is the first time that two hybrids, the Ford Escape and the Toyota Highlander, dominate the SUV category. This is also the second year in a row that one vehicle, the Honda Odyssey, swept the minivan category.” “The front-wheel-drive Ford Escape Hybrid was one of the big surprises of our analysis,” added Bell. “It gets between 31 and 36 miles per gallon, which is unheard for a vehicle of its size and utility. It has a four-cylinder engine but gives drivers nearly the power of a six-cylinder engine without hurting their wallet. And the industry is finding that all hybrids are proving to be well engineered and therefore allow owners to maintain a very low Cost of Ownership.” Winners for 2006 This year, IntelliChoice.com identified 29 winning models by segment and class, plus eight overall category winners. The eight overall category winners are: • Best Car Value Under $23,000 – Toyota Prius • Best Car Value Over $23,000 – Lexus LS 430 • Best SUV Value Under $28,000 – Ford Escape Hybrid 2WD • Best SUV Value Over $28,000 – Toyota Highlander Hybrid 2WD • Best Truck Value Under $26,000 – Toyota Tundra Regular Cab 2WD • Best Truck Value Over $26,000 – Toyota Tundra Extended Cab 4WD • Best Van Value Under $25,000 – Honda Odyssey LX • Best Van Value Over $25,000 – Honda Odyssey EX Hidden Costs of Ownership Rising Bell said that, thus far in 2006, it appears that a vehicle’s cost of ownership will become a more significant factor in vehicle purchase decisions due to the relative costs of fuel and depreciation. As an example, in an effort to fight the cost of accelerated depreciation, Ford and General Motors have recently moved to reduce incentives and rebates and drive sticker prices closer to actual transaction prices. For this reason, Bell emphasized the importance of online research in evaluating and purchasing a vehicle. “IntelliChoice.com performs a valuable service by analyzing all of the data that consumers are not capable of finding or calculating on their own,” said Bell. “‘The Best Overall Value of the Year’ awards are the only awards of their kind that analyze Cost of Ownership. Through them, we’re able to give our users the ability to feel confident they have chosen their car wisely.” How IntelliChoice.com Determines “Best Overall Value” 2006 marks IntelliChoice.com’s twentieth year publishing ownership cost and value analysis. The Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) awards identify THE vehicles that promise the best return on investment within their classes. The IntelliChoice.com evaluation process aggregates and analyzes data from auto manufacturers, the U.S. government, and third-party data resources to determine the true costs of owning every 2006 vehicle over a five-year ownership period. For the 2006 BOVY’s, IntelliChoice.com assigned a value rating to more than 1,700 mainstream vehicles sold in America. This value rating factors the accumulated costs of depreciation, maintenance, repairs, fuel, state fees, financing, and insurance to identify the true standout models in each class. 10. LINCOLN NAVIGATOR: ELEGANT AMERICAN LUXURY Dramatic, distinctive design: Lincoln Navigator’s fresh look combines power and refinement for the American luxury-SUV customer Comfortable, capable interior: All-new seating offers exceptional comfort, craftsmanship and convenience. PowerFold™ third-row seat provides segment-exclusive flexibility and ease of cargo storage Quiet, confident driving experience: All-new frame and independent suspension deliver superior ride and handling. Acoustic windshield, thicker glass and tuned mirrors contribute to Navigator’s "whisper quiet" interior New Lincoln Navigator L: Provides an additional 25 cubic feet of cargo space The 2007 Lincoln Navigator’s distinctive new design delivers American elegance. DISTINCTIVE AMERICAN ELEGANCE The new Lincoln Navigator, America’s original full-size luxury SUV, will offer uncompromising levels of luxury, capability, functionality. The Lincoln Navigator L extends luxury even further with an additional 25 cu. ft. cargo room behind the third-row seat. The Lincoln Navigator’s expressive design brings a unique elegance and an unrivaled presence to the full-size luxury-utility segment. Lincoln Navigator charts its own path, offering confident ride and handling, outstanding comfort and craftsmanship, and class-leading capability. "Lincoln Navigator has always been in a unique class," says Al Giombetti, president, Ford, Lincoln Mercury Marketing and Sales. "It offers a great blend of style and functionality, but more than that, it’s got street appeal." Lincoln extends luxury SUV capability even further with a new addition to the lineup. The Lincoln Navigator L is 14.7 inches longer than the regular model and offers luxury buyers an additional 25 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the third-row seat. EXPRESSIVE DESIGN MAKES A DRAMATIC STATEMENT The 2007 Lincoln Navigator’s distinctive design combines power and refinement to deliver Lincoln luxury. Lincoln Navigator looks powerful and capable without looking pretentious. The precision-detailed grille extends into the HID headlamps, creating a cohesive design. "Lincoln Navigator features refined power, grand style with modern and elegant execution," says Chelsia Lau, Lincoln Navigator chief designer. "The dramatic design conveys power, both from under the hood and from the feeling behind the wheel." That statement of power begins with the bold chrome grille. The horizontal and vertical lines are inspired by the Lincoln star, detailed with sharp, organized surfaces. The precision detailing of the grille extends into the high-intensity-discharge (HID) projector headlamps. The lower grille carries through the theme, housing the integrated fog lamps. "We wanted to integrate every aspect of the front-end design," says Lau. "By continuing the grille into the optics, they are no longer just headlights, but industrial jewelry that completes the overall design." The upper grille is carried into the chiseled chamfers that define the prominent "powerdome" hood, reinforcing Lincoln Navigator’s imposing presence. Lincoln Navigator is finely crafted, from the fit and finish of the chrome body molding to the elegant available 20-inch aluminum wheels. The Lincoln Navigator profile is defined by clean, sheer, tapered surfaces. That design language is consistent throughout the vehicle, from the smooth quarter panels to the chiseled side mirror shells. A Lincoln-signature chrome strip highlights the beltline, while chrome body-side trim extends from the front wheel well to the back for a tailored appearance. A proud, stable stance on 18-inch machined aluminum wheels – or available 20-inch chrome wheels – plants the vehicle to the road. For 2007, Lincoln Navigator again offers power-folding running boards, improved for more seamless integration. With the doors closed, the running boards fold out of sight and are perfectly integrated into the lower body wrap. When one of the side doors is opened, the running boards fold out in presentation, offering a step bar for easy ingress and egress. The new taillamps give a nod to the 2007 Lincoln MKZ luxury mid-size sedan, with wing-shaped lamps that cut into the liftgate and wrap around the vehicle. A bold chrome outline and white inserts in the red optic areas complete the exterior. MODERN-LUXURY INTERIOR SETS THE BAR The Lincoln Navigator engineering team carefully looked at the needs and desires of Navigator buyers, then collaborated on the all-new luxurious interior to answer those needs. Lincoln Navigator is awash in fine details, like the elegant chrome trim on the shifter. "The typical Lincoln Navigator owner is a check-every-box buyer," says Raj Nair, executive director, Body-on-frame Vehicles. "If there’s an option, they want it. We set out to offer these demanding buyers more luxury, more features and a greater level of craftsmanship." The Navigator’s interior features a flowthrough center console that sweeps up into the rectangular "eyebrows" that frame the dash panel. The strong graphic presentation is echoed in the shape of the instrument bezels, a design inspired by popular rectangular fashion eyewear. Lincoln Navigator offers the elegance of genuine Dark Ebony or Anigre wood trim on the console and upper door panels. The wood trim is bookmatched so the grains are precisely aligned. For example, the coin-tray cover is laser cut from the center console wood trim for perfectly matched wood grain. "Today’s luxury buyer isn’t satisfied with just leather seats and wood trim," says Lau. "What modern luxury buyers are looking for – and what we delivered in Lincoln Navigator – are superior craftsmanship and exquisite details. Details such as bookmatched wood grain, soft white lighting and butter-soft leather are what make Lincoln Navigator truly luxurious." Details like satin-nickel accents on the center stack, binnacle inserts and door trim and chrome accents on cup-holder rings, steering wheel and door releases speak to Lincoln Navigator’s fine craftsmanship. A touch of black on the center stack and instrument panel provides further emphasis of refinement. At night, the interior is bathed in Lincoln’s signature cool-white lighting, creating a soothing atmosphere. LINCOLN SIGNATURE SEATING Premium leather contributes to the overall comfort, further improving Lincoln’s signature seating. Lincoln Navigator’s seating offers premium luxury comfort in all three rows. According to Lowell Lampen, manager of SUV Seats, a key to seating comfort is providing a soft cushion as soon as customers sit down. It's important to balance that initial feel with firm support making seats comfortable for long trips. The standard 10-way power driver and front passenger seats are designed to comfortably accommodate a diverse group of occupants, from 4-foot-10 to 6-foot-5, from 90 pounds to 300 pounds. Power-adjustable pedals and memory functions enable drivers to fine-tune their positions. The front seats also offer next-generation heating and cooling for the ultimate in comfort – another Lincoln hallmark. Even Lincoln Navigator's seat frames were refined to improve comfort by eliminating the vibration from the floor. This premium seating extends to the available 40/20/40-split second row seat and 60/40-split third row, which effortlessly tumble to create a flat load floor. With seating for eight, the Lincoln Navigator offers 18.2 cubic feet of cargo space, while Navigator L offers 42.7 cubic feet. With both the second- and third-row seats folded, the Lincoln Navigator can accommodate 103.5 cubic feet, while Navigator L offers a cavernous 128.2 cubic feet. The second-row seats feature new mechanisms that enable one-hand fold-and-tumble operation to access the third row. For increased visibility, the second-row head restraints fold forward 90 degrees to improve driver rear view. Lincoln Navigator's third-row seat folds flat into the floor for added cargo space. The available PowerFold™ third row offers 54.5 cubic feet of cargo space at the touch of a button. The available power liftgate provides even more convenience. For 2007, the system has been redesigned to use side-mounted pistons for improved rear visibility. STATE-OF-THE-ART ENTERTAINMENT Lincoln Navigator has an available 14-speaker THX® II Certified audio and DVD-based navigation system. Lincoln Navigator offers a host of features and options that provide a high level of convenience. The voice-activated DVD-based navigation system features a 6.5-inch touch screen designed for improved clarity and incorporates text-to-speech technology that reads and communicates directions and street names in three languages. The efficiency of the dual-zone climate control has been improved, bringing the cabin to a comfortable temperature in a third of the previous time. Lincoln Navigator offers a first-in-class 600-watt THX® II Certified premium audio system with six-disc CD changer and 14 speakers. A power amplifier is mounted behind the center stack, and a center speaker array is mounted above the center stack for optimum sound clarity and quality. For even more sound choices, SIRIUS satellite radio is available, as is an integrated MP3 audio jack. If rear passenger entertainment is in order, Lincoln Navigator has an available entertainment system with a larger 8-inch screen and two wireless headphones to keep the sound contained. 'WHISPER QUIET' REFINED RIDE Navigator’s cabin is impressively quiet so passengers can enjoy better conversations, music or movies. Enjoying the Lincoln Navigator's entertainment offerings is even easier, as engineers "soundly" beat their initial targets for interior quietness. "Our initial targets were a significant improvement over the already stringent levels we set with the previous Lincoln Navigator," says John Viera, Navigator chief nameplate engineer. "But as the program progressed, we made such dramatic improvements in quietness we had to set new targets. The result is a vehicle that will provide our customers with a truly unexpected quality of quietness on the road." Additional noise-dampening insulation was added to the headliner and dash to help decrease wind and powertrain noise. Noise-absorbing padding was added to the carpeting to further reduce tire and road noise. Thicker side glass and new cut-line seals were added for decreased wind noise. Additional structure was added to the roof to reduce body boom, and a stiffer chassis and new body mounts further isolate road noise and vibration. Side mirrors were "tuned" to reduce wind noise in the cabin, and tire tread designs were optimized to minimize road noise. IMPROVED RIDE AND HANDLING FOR LUXURY DRIVING EXPERIENCE An all-new, stiffer chassis and refined independent rear suspension contribute to Lincoln Navigator’s impressive, confident ride and handling. Lincoln Navigator also offers a confident, refined driving experience commensurate with a luxury vehicle. The vehicle features a stiffer frame for improved handling and decreased susceptibility to squeaks and rattles. The frame features a tube-through-tube design, creating one of the stiffest frames in the industry. The 2007 Lincoln Navigator has an all-new independent rear suspension (IRS). The new IRS features a five-link design, with the fifth link controlling fore/aft movements while the short and long arms control lateral forces. This allows for greater control of wheel movement, as well as enabling lighter suspension components for improved response. Power is provided by Lincoln Navigator's 5.4-liter, three-valve Triton™ V-8, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, that generates 300 horsepower and 365 foot pounds of torque. A wide-ratio, 6-speed transmission has smaller steps between gears than a typical 4-speed automatic and offers improved shift quality and faster acceleration. With a wide 6.02:1 gear ratio and two overdrive gears (fifth and sixth), the Lincoln Navigator’s 6-speed offers up to a 7 percent increase in fuel economy on the highway over a typical 4-speed automatic. STANDARD ADVANCETRAC® WITH RSC®(Roll Stability Control) Lincoln Navigator’s confident handling helps prevent accidents from occurring. And Lincoln Navigator’s safety system features a comprehensive package of features. The 2007 Lincoln Navigator is equipped with dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, seat-mounted side air bags and three-row side curtain air bags with rollfold technology. Lincoln’s safety package includes standard AdvanceTrac® with RSC® (Roll Stability Control), which utilizes a gyroscopic roll rate sensor to enhance the vehicle’s rollover resistance. Additional standard safety features include: Dual-stage second-generation driver and front-passenger air bags that tailor deployment based on crash severity, safety belt usage and occupant size. Three-row Safety Canopy™ side curtain air bags designed to activate in rollovers and side impacts for enhanced head protection. Seat-mounted side air bags for the first row and energy-absorbing knee bolsters and glove box for the front passenger. 11. All-New Fifth-Generation 2007 Lexus ES Sedan Redefines Entry Luxury Segment 02/08/2006 Chicago The all-new 2007 Lexus ES 350 made its public debut today at the Chicago Auto Show. The all-new, fully redesigned ES marks the fourth Lexus sedan to benefit from the L-finesse design language. Going on sale in late April, the fifth-generation ES improves upon every level of comfort, safety, performance and craftsmanship in the elegant five-passenger sedan. "We believe the newly revamped ES 350 is better in virtually every way than our original LS flagship sedan," said Lexus Group Vice President and General Manager Bob Carter. "It's faster, quieter and more powerful than the first LS that redefined the prestige luxury segment in the early 1990s." 2007 ES Marks Complete Redesign of All Lexus Sedans From a styling standpoint, the ES marks the latest Lexus sedan to receive a complete redesign emphasizing a more sculptural direction, one that now reveals a family resemblance across the entire passenger car lineup. With an over two-inch longer wheelbase and more than an inch wider track, the ES has a more confident stance. A long hood, pulled-back cabin and short rear deck are characteristic of the new L-finesse design theme, recalling classic sports car proportions with a contemporary look unique to all new-generation Lexus sedans. The creation of a spatial feeling in the passenger compartment is central to the new Lexus design direction. Without increasing the overall exterior length, engineers were able to increase rear legroom while maintaining the already roomy driver and front-passenger compartment. The interior of the new ES introduces a new level of craftsmanship as well. Premium wood, polished metal and leather accents provide a level of luxury never before seen in the entry luxury segment. Everything inside the ES is designed and styled to create a comfortable and harmonious interaction, with touchpoints that convey quality and refinement. The roomy, luxurious cabin is complemented by intelligently designed displays and controls to make driving both simple and pleasurable. Bright, clear Optitron gauges combined with smartly integrated metallic and authentic brown walnut wood trim help create a luxurious, elegant ambience. Powerful Technology for New V6 The ES 350's 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers 272 horsepower and 254 lb.-ft. of torque, resulting in an estimated zero-to-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds, substantially quicker than the model it replaces. The highly sophisticated engine uses electronically controlled sequential fuel injection, which optimizes the fuel mixture and creates a precise burn, higher output and lower emissions to aid drivability. The result is a substantial improvement in engine efficiency with increased power and improved fuel economy. The engine also benefits from reduced internal friction via chain-driven camshafts and roller-rocker arms that serve to increase efficiency. Aluminum heads and cylinder blocks feature special cast-in "spiny" cylinder liners to improve liner stability and cooling by increasing surface contact area with the cylinder head. The new ES comes standard with dual exhaust, which reduces exhaust backpressure at high rpm. Extensive use of stainless steel in the exhaust system minimizes weight and improves durability. The integration of these technologies contributes to segment-leading efficiency with the ES 350 obtaining a manufacturer-estimated combined fuel consumption of 25 mpg (21 mpg city/30 mpg highway) and an expected Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle II (ULEV II) certification. Six-Speed Transmission The front-wheel drive ES 350 features a six-speed automatic Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) and sequential shift. The low-friction, high-efficiency gear train is lighter and more compact than the previous generation 5-speed transmission with 20 percent fewer parts and 24 percent fewer hydraulic controls. Gear ratios are carefully matched to both engine horsepower and torque characteristics to provide very smooth yet responsive shifts for improved drivability. New Intelligent Luxury In addition to a new look and feel, the new ES also improves upon the increasingly complex nature of automotive technology. The ES offers numerous standard features such as SmartAccess keyless entry and a new push-to-start ignition system that allows drivers to enter and start the vehicle without removing the access fob from their pocket or purse. Lexus' craftsmanship and renowned attention to detail provide true luxury by design. Dual-zone automatic climate control and 10-way power front seats, with available memory, highlight the front cabin. The supportive standard cloth seats are also available in leather and extra-soft upgraded perforated leather for additional comfort. The three-spoke steering wheel features easy-to-use controls for the audio system, trip computer and multi-information display in the speedometer. It also adds a voice control switch for the available Bluetooth® navigation and features. An auto-dimming rearview mirror with an integrated digital compass is standard, as are heated exterior mirrors. Additional standard luxury features include a sliding center console, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, a one-touch power moonroof and an illuminated entry system that lights the exterior with puddle lamps and the interior cabin footwells. Luxury extends to the smallest details in the new ES, from illuminated front cup holders to an interior LED soft-lighting system that provides just the right amount of light where driver and passengers need it most. And the ES lends extra peace of mind with the integrated Homelink® transmitter that can control a variety of compatible home security devices and systems. Advanced Safety Features New standard safety features include Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC), an electronic traction-control system that uses both throttle and brake intervention to help control wheel spin. In addition, the new ES provides eight standard airbags; 10 with the optional rear-seat side airbags. For 2007, the ES gains new knee airbags for the driver and front passenger as well as a twin-chamber front passenger airbag. Side-curtain airbags coupled with front seat–mounted airbags and the optional rear-seat side airbags are designed to help offer additional crash energy management for the front and rear seat occupants. The Supplemental Restraint System in the new ES also includes variable-force front airbags for both driver and front passenger. Sensors determine the severity of the accident and, in turn, the force with which to deploy the front airbags, helping to provide an appropriate level of occupant restraint. Rear-seat side airbags are offered optionally. The ES 350 includes the safety of several visibility-enhancing technologies. The front side windows feature a water-repellant surface that helps to bead rainwater. A rear back-up camera, part of the available navigation package, is mounted near the top of the license plate surround and projects a color image of what the camera lens can detect behind the vehicle onto the navigation screen whenever the vehicle is in reverse. In addition, the ES provides the first-ever intelligent Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS) that allows both right and left front headlamp bulbs to swivel at the same time to help illuminate a turn or curve as the driver steers into it. Luxury Alive in the Details For the first time, Lexus offers an optional panorama glass roof on the ES 350 creating an expansive feeling of openness for interior passengers. The glass roof extends over the entire passenger cabin providing a fixed skylight for rear passengers and a sliding sunroof for front passengers. A manual interior shade is provided for the front and rear passenger compartments. The frameless design allows for significantly tighter gaps versus those provided by other manufacturers and, with no visible gaskets, contributes to its sleek appearance and efficient aerodynamics. Optional ventilated front seats and an available power rear window sunshade work in concert with the standard dual-zone climate control that filters the air to keep occupants comfortable. A dual-zone automatic climate control allows driver and front passenger to customize interior temperatures, while rear passengers enjoy their own A/C vents. The optional and newly upgraded fifth-generation navigation system offers eight million points of interest (POI). The multi-information display makes key information readily available and easy to see. These and other features available on the new ES, such as semi-aniline leather, High-Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps, intelligent Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, heated/ventilated front seats and the panorama glass roof are normally found only in more expensive luxury cars. Mind-Expanding Audio Systems An enhanced standard premium audio system brings an in-dash, six-disc CD-changer, MP3 player, iPod connectivity and an additional speaker to the 2007 ES. The system also includes an Automatic Sound Levelizer (ASL) to maintain consistent sound levels at varying vehicle speeds. Music aficionados will appreciate the newest generation of the optional Mark Levinson audio system in the new ES. Using a 7.1-channel speaker architecture, this leading-edge design uses 10 channels of amplification with a total of 300 watts at 0.1 percent Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) playing through 14 speakers to bring a major new dimension to automotive audio sound. The Mark Levinson audio also takes advantage of DVD audio and video technology, allowing users to play both conventional CDs and DVDs. DVD movies can be viewed on the color 7-inch touch screen when the vehicle is parked. The all-new 2007 Lexus ES goes on sale late April. Although prices have not been finalized, it will represent the best value in the entry luxury segment. Source: Toyota/Lexus/Scion Pressroom

  13. Toyota to Expand Output Capacity in Canada TOKYO - Toyota Motor Corp., whose solid growth could soon put it ahead of General Motors as the world's largest automaker, said Wednesday it will increase output capacity at a new assembly plant it is building in Canada. Annual production capacity at Toyota's planned factory in Woodstock, Ontario, will be raised to 150,000 units, from an initial target of 100,000 units, the company said in a statement. The plant, now under construction, is scheduled to come online in 2008. Total investment in the Woodstock facility, Toyota's second plant in Canada, will now amount to about $950 million with a total employment of 2,000 people, the company said. The factory will make the RAV4 sport utility vehicle. "The announced expansion is aimed at allowing a flexible response to future market demand in North America," Toyota said. Completion of the plant will give the world's second-largest automaker an annual North American production capacity of 1.88 million units in 2008, the Toyota City-based company. On Tuesday, Toyota reported a 34 percent rise in profit for the quarter ended Dec. 31 as sales jumped in North America and Asia. Toyota recorded a record high group net profit of 397.6 billion yen ($3.4 billion) during the period, on a 15 percent increase in sales to 5.33 trillion yen ($45.6 billion). Toyota's growth comes at a time when U.S. automakers General Motors and Ford Motor Co. are struggling. Toyota also said Tuesday it expects to sell 7.95 million vehicles for the fiscal year ending March 31, above the 7.4 million vehicles sold the previous year but 80,000 vehicles fewer than the 8.03 million vehicles projected in November. Toyota said sales growth in North America was unlikely to offset anticipated drops in Japan and the rest of Asia from the earlier forecast. Toyota's annual projection for fiscal 2005 is still fewer than General Motors' yearly sales, but if trends continue, Toyota will overtake the Detroit-based automaker in the next few years, some analysts say. Toyota has already passed up Ford, based in Dearborn, Mich., as the world's second-biggest automaker. General Motors sold 9.17 million vehicles worldwide in 2005, the most it has sold in 27 years. However, the automaker is suffering from declining U.S. market share at the hands of its Asian competitors. GM lost $8.6 billion last year amid high health, pension, labor and materials costs. 15. GM Unveils All-New 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, Makes Major Announcements About E85 And OnStar At Chicago Auto Show CHICAGO – General Motors will introduce the all-new 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche, the latest rollout of its next-generation full-size truck family and the industry’s most flexible utility vehicle, at the Chicago Auto Show. GM also makes major announcements strengthening its flexible-fuel vehicle leadership and adding a new navigation feature to OnStar, which celebrates its 10 th anniversary at the show. “GM continues to demonstrate bold and innovative leadership in products, technology and gasoline savings,” said Brent Dewar, GM North America vice president, marketing and advertising. “On all of these fronts and more, GM is truly on a roll.” 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche The Chevy Avalanche was the first to combine the passenger-comfort attributes of an SUV with the cargo capability of a truck. The 2007 model is based on GM’s brand-new, full-size SUV platform, which features more power with improved, segment-leading fuel economy and flex-fuel capability on some models; a sharper, more precise driving feel; increased interior refinement and improved quietness; and world-class safety. From its SUV comfort and ingenious Midgate to its new family of flex-fuel-capable engines, Avalanche delivers a unique combination of cargo and passenger options. “Avalanche is a vehicle without peers, selling more than 379,500 units since its spring 2001 launch through December 2005,” said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. Avalanche is offered in LS, LT and LTZ models, with 2WD and 4WD. A Z71 off-road package will be offered later in the model year. At the start of production, Avalanche will be equipped with an efficient 5.3L V-8 delivering 320 horsepower (238 kw)* and 335 lb.-ft. of torque (463 Nm)*, along with Active Fuel Management™ technology, which seamlessly switches between eight- and four-cylinder power to save fuel. Two versions of the Vortec 5.3L Gen IV V-8 – including an aluminum-block version that is standard in 4WD models – are compatible with E85. They can run on any combination of gasoline and/or E85 fuel. Coming later in the year is a powerful, new all-aluminum 6.0L V-8 with variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management. The engine is rated at an estimated 355 horsepower (264 kw). Pioneered on the first-generation Avalanche, the Midgate opens to extend the cargo-carrying capability from the cargo bed’s 5.3-foot-long (1.6 m) length to 8.2 feet (2.5 m) – 2 inches (51 mm) longer than previous models. The rear seat must be folded to achieve maximum storage capability; with the rear seat up and the Midgate closed, Avalanche has room for up to six passengers. Avalanche also offers up to 8,000 pounds (3,629 kg) of towing capability, when properly equipped, enhancing its flexible, ready-for-anything capability. New features on the ’07 model enhance Avalanche’s flexible attributes and reflect customer feedback: Central-locking tailgate – locking and unlocking the tailgate is more secure, as the conventional keyed lock is removed from the tailgate. Locking and unlocking functions are handled by the interior lock switches or from the Remote Keyless Entry fob. Remote vehicle starting – standard on some models and available on others, the remote vehicle starting system allows convenient start-up from a distance to pre-heat or pre-cool the vehicle’s interior. Cargo cover retaining straps – new straps allow the cargo covers to be held securely in place when removed from the storage compartments. Avalanche also has a new tailgate that is spring-loaded to reduce the effort needed to open or close it. GM pumps up E85 activity A partnership between GM, Shell Oil Products US and VeraSun Energy Corp. will bring 26 additional E85 refueling stations to the greater Chicago area. The collaboration is part of a broader, national GM campaign to boost the use and awareness of ethanol-based E85 fuel in the U.S. To promote E85 fuel and vehicles during the Chicago Auto Show, several major Chicago buildings will be illuminated in yellow lights in reference to the corn that is used to make most of the ethanol in the U.S. E85 supply; and city “street teams” will randomly reach out to Chicagoans Feb. 10-12 and 17-19 with giveaways that promote GM’s new “Live Green Go Yellow” E85 marketing and advertising campaign. GM also will promote E85 with a major presence in the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and with 2005 NASCAR Nextel Cup champion Tony Stewart. The E85 partnership and marketing campaign are designed to encourage greater E85 use and showcase GM’s E85 FlexFuel vehicle leadership to U.S. consumers. E85 FlexFuel vehicles can run on any combination of gasoline and/or E85, a fuel blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. E85 can contribute to energy independence because it diversifies the source of transportation fuels beyond petroleum, and it provides positive environmental benefits in the form of reduced greenhouse gas emissions. “GM is pursuing gasoline-savings solutions on many fronts on the way to our ultimate vision of hydrogen fuel cell-powered transportation,” said Elizabeth Lowery, GM vice president of environment and energy. “E85 ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline and is a renewable, domestic fuel that can enhance the nation’s economy and energy security.” OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation Many owners of new GM vehicles may remember 2006 as the last year they ever got lost while driving, thanks to Turn-by-Turn Navigation, the first factory-installed, fully integrated GPS navigation system from OnStar by GM. OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation allows consumers to talk to a live advisor, who in turn sends complete step-by-step directions to customers’ vehicles through their OnStar system. Audio directions are then automatically piped through the vehicle’s stereo as they are needed, allowing drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The service debuts in March on the 2006 Cadillac DTS and Buick Lucerne, and on the Cadillac STS in the second quarter as part of the standard OnStar package. It will be available in about 1 million GM cars and trucks in the 2007 model year, and will be expanded further within the portfolio in 2008. Turn-by-Turn is the highlight of OnStar’s latest generation of in-vehicle hardware, its seventh in just 10 years. GM introduced the first OnStar-equipped vehicle at the Chicago Auto Show 10 years ago. “The key to our progress and growth has been to focus on services that matter to customers, not just early adopters, and to make them easy to understand and use,” said Chet Huber, president of OnStar. “With OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation, we’re demystifying navigation technology to bring safe, simple GPS-based routing to the mass market at a fraction of the cost of other competitive alternatives.” Link: http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayServlet...n=2&docid=22875

  17. Edmunds Article: Chicago Show: Nissan Shoots for Normal With Redesigned 2007 Quest
  18. Well, picturing that ruined my night...
  19. Well, if you're selling all of that....an STS-V?? I'll take your GTO...if someone else agrees to pay for it.
  20. I actually like it in real life. It's better than the piggish Sienna and the snoozer DCX vans, IMO.
  21. I'm guessing this is Nissan's model that set to debut in Chicago. The new one is lightyears better than the old. Images from Nissan News.
  22. Solstice surges past Miata in roadster race Automotive News / February 6, 2006 - 6:00 am For 16 years, Mazda's MX-5 Miata has been the world's top-selling entry-level two-seat roadster. With more than 700,000 built, the Miata has knocked off British Leyland's venerable MGB, produced from 1962 to 1980, as the most popular roadster ever. But the Pontiac Solstice is off to a strong start, and is far outpacing the newly redesigned Miata. In January - the first month of full availability for the Solstice - the sleek Pontiac roadster nearly doubled the Miata in sales, 1,990 to 1,067. It was the same story in December, when the Solstice clobbered the Miata, 2,746 to 1,007. To be sure, Miata sales in January were 106.8 percent ahead of the same month last year, when the previous model was on its last legs. But the new Miata isn't doing well in one critical area: consumers' willingness to pay more than sticker. Based on completed eBay auction sales, the highest price a 2006 Miata sold for was $21,900, but a Solstice brought $26,100. Including freight, the base Miata MX-5 stickers for $20,995, and the Solstice stickers for $20,490. Pontiac officials are thrilled and a little surprised by the early results. Said Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson: "The Miata is an extremely strong competitor, and we thought it was going to be a really good horse race." 23. Between this and the name change after one year, it kind of makes you think Lincoln should have -- oh, I don't know -- maybe waited a year to release the thing. Seriously, all of these major changes after a year suggests they rushed the car to market. Oh, and about these guages... There is far too much empty space there. The space between the speedometer and odometer makes it look terribly barren.
  24. I caught sight of a new RAV4 today (not bad) and a slightly beat Dodge Ram van with a license plate that read "DO ME".
