Interestingly, the Norfolk Southern Railroad did an experiment with a battery powered locomotive with no regenerator. Performance hasn't been very good and it is mostly just a showpiece right now.

GE was working on a Hybrid Locomotive about 10 years ago, but nothing really came of it.  Right now, locos just exhaust their regenerative braking out as heat.  I wonder, as battery tech has improved over the last 10 years if someone will give it another go.

That would be cool to see if it makes sense for the trains now especially with the trains that are using LNG for the generators instead of diesel, Maybe time to rethink the Hybrid Train.

    Tesla first to 100kWh Battery

    p100d-announcement.jpg

According Tesla today, they are now building the fastest 0-60 sedan in the world, beating out Porsche and Ferrari. Today people can now order the P100D with Ludicrous mode! This allows this 7 passenger sedan 5 adults / 2 kids to hit 60 in 2.5 seconds according to Tesla's own Blog. The Tesla X P100D can hit 60 in 2.9 seconds. The battery is 300 miles in Ludicrous mode and 315 miles in normal mode.

Tesla says all S and X orders not delivered can upgrade to the 100 battery pack for $10,000 and existing S and X can upgrade for $20,000 to the 100 battery pack. The higher upgrade fee on existing owners is due to disposal of the 90 battery pack.

Tesla goes on to also say that this helps fund development of the Tesla 3.

  3. Since we have many various thoughts on the design direction, I thought it might be nice to grab and compare the current products that are still with us and the evolution they have taken.

The one thing this does prove is that the headlights need to stay a vertical design. Yet we can find horizontal headlights in the past but we do not need to mimic BMW, MB or Audi. Cadillac needs to keep their own styling trend and Johan need to man up focus on the rich history of the Unique Cadillac rather than copying his German lovefest of Sausage!

  4. expanded cars should be on hold as they do need to focus on making the product line right and tweaking existing auto's to be best in class.

I am also saying it here, If Johan does not see that the industry is changing and that the focus should be on plug-in Hybrids and EV's, they need to cut him loose and bring in a true visionary. Twin Turbo and V10/12 engines are a dying place that has limited future growth besides 1 to 2 generations out at most covering 4-8 years. I would question putting to many resources into old petro technology.

I really like the new web site, so is the timeline look the new way unread forum posts will always show now in this version? Agree with others that I do like the new software, but have to get used to the changes also as I search for stuff.

What could the Tesla Truck look like?

Stories are flying all over the internet, many folks are just loving the Hyper chatter that Musk brings when he talks about something very cryptic. I went in search of what this truck was, could be and found nothing firm but plenty of pictures.

Clearly some are photoshops of old concepts especially the GMC truck, that I have always loved. Review them below including what Chris Doane has done and then sound off on what your thoughts are about an EV truck, style, etc.

Not liking it in the least, ccap.

First thing I think of is the laundry list of random negatives one could them attach to a model with a derogatory intent.

    2nd thing is sports teams.

Cadillac has half a century of foreign city names in their past, no real connection with American locations comes to mind other than a short-lived run with 'Park Avenue'.

    Awwww dang.. lol

I actually thought I had a good idea goin for them. I didn't think about the sports teams. I just thought it was good because it was 100% American and had some actual value behind it other than a random name or just another old name being reused.

I don't care that they've had foreign names, bring $h! back to AMERICA! Why NOT bring names back to America? Is there any other form of naming that could/would represent America?

What I personally think would be GREAT for Cadillac to do is use iconic United States cities or landmarks for their cars.

    New York

    LA(Los Angeles)

    Chicago

    Detroit

    Dallas

    Houston

    Pittsburgh

    New Orleans

    St. Louis

    Atlanta

You could add historically significant towns/locations like Gettysburg or Normandy(I know it isn't a US location but it is very historically significant to our country). There are probably a dozen other huge major battle ground with historical significance that could be used.

I just think it would be an awesome way to keep it American, make it's name mean something, and it isn't an alphanumeric jumble that a lot of non-car people don't understand at all.

Gotta pass on the city naming thing, after all we are trying to build and sell a global brand. We need more global planet wide names.

Course I am sure ganges in various cities would love it.

You can see it now, I drive a Cadillac Dallas North Side Edition!  :bowl:  Rollin  :bowl:  Rollin  :bowl:

    dang.. lol

Why does it have to be global names just because the brand is global? It's an American iconic brand.

I mean if that is the case we could go with globally powerful cities but that just seems awkward..

Ohhhh well, just an idea that I thought was actually awesome. Apparently not so much.. lol

Howe about the 7 wonders of the world labels? We could cover some awesome places with proper names that would be global and let the auto's speak their American roots as is.

Come up with a series of Cars, SUVs and Trucks based on Iconic places around the world. :P

OMG YOU ARE SO PLIABLE.  My tongue was SO far into my cheek on that one.  How are those yoga classes going?  I want to find a naked yoga class near me.  Non co-ed.

Yup you just want a Sausage Fest! :P Bratwurst, Ballpark, Kosher, etc...   :P

    To be honest.

    I like my sausages THICK.

    Minimum 1 foot long....

For me its Costco's Kirkland sausages....

Just in case you missed on the homo-erotic sexual undertones because TV Screen...

    Here is another:

Its hard to stay excited with all this "start/stop" technology to save a few bucks on fuel when its such a small advantage.

We'll at least you went Kosher!, After all Hebrew Nation makes Kirkland Signature Beef Dinner Franks! :P

I do agree, sucks to have to start n stop. Rather just rev the V8 to the finish line and win like all American Pushrods do! ;)

Yeah I am still not big on turbo engines over the long haul, but then I tend to be not about the long haul when it comes to vehicles.

'00 GTI 1.8t, traded at about 30k miles

'12 Cruze 1.4t, traded at about 6k miles

'13 Beetle 2.0 TDi, traded at about 32k miles

You've also said you are leery of turbos.

Not on reliability.  They have their place and purpose.  What I'm leary of is some rather dubious fuel economy advantage claims certain manufacturers make over larger displacement non-turbo engines. I have no qualms with a turbo engine in of itself, but I remain unconvinced that it is inherently superior to an engine of larger cylinder count and/or displacement in terms of fuel economy.

I totally agree with you on this point! :metal:

To bring it back to the topic.... if stop/start were an issue, we'd have been hearing widespread reports about it since it came out on the Malibu hybrid in 2008, or any of the eAssist cars, or the Honda IMA.

And when you look into it.... it's virtually nothing. More people have their driver's door handle break on a Malibu than have problems with start/stop.

Would love to hear from people who live in hilly areas like San Francisco, Seattle, etc. Would be interesting to hear how the start / stop works on the hills and if there is more roll back or not?
