  1. Interesting observation. I guess my preconceived notion of Americana kind of follows a Webster dictionary exert, "things produced in the U.S. and thought to be typical of the U.S. or its culture" I guess the key word here is "thought". Your point about the vacations and exotic locations is something I missed, as far as, the European angle. It certainly was aiming for being or reaching for a certain class in life. It was Keeping up with Jone's, for sure, or longing to be the Jone's. Agreed! Which is why I enjoy showcasing ads & other photos on my website. Cort www.oldcarsstronghearts.com 1979 & 1989 Caprice Classics | pigValve, paceMaker, cowValve "I wouldn't trade those days for nothin'" __ Mark Wills __ '19 something' Oh, good for you. Sure you have fun with your site. It is cool, when you spot an old car on the road or catch a old advertisement to compare to today's ads and vehicle on the road.
  2. How about taking it back to a 63 Catalina.. Looks like a sweet ride, you got the two door and it is a convertible. Although, I have never much been into convertibles. I think it is because of the hassle of worrying about the top getting stuck in the down position, or worse right in mid process. But riding with the top down, does sound like fun. Have you ever had a convertible? Watch, my next car will be one and I will have to eat my words!
  3. Well, you could still pursue it, as an adult. As the saying goes, never too old to try new things. Just saying... Or maybe you do not live so close to a track anymore.
  4. Well until then, you can go to youtube and check some out. I would post a link, but not sure, if that is acceptable. But not a big deal to search for it easily enough, lol. Anyways, I went and listened to some engines. Was kind of fun to listen to the various sounds! I was, actually, hoping someone had listed the above track in your initial post. Would like to hear the older sounds of the engines to compare.
  5. Well, if they know there is a market, why can't they figure out how to bring the price down? I say go back to the days of Henry Ford and figure it out! How about taking some of the bells and whistles off to bring the price down? There has to be some way to get these cars out on the market at a more reasonable price.
  6. I know, right! I, also, like the muted color of the photo's. Kind of takes you back in time on another level. But got to admit, the images are a bit of a preconceived stereotype of Americana. But now that I think about it, today's ads are not much better in some respects. Trying to sell a way of like. I say, let the car speak for itself, because we know it can!
  7. Yeah! That roaring sound of the engine, the smell or rubber and gas,the excitement of the crowd, this is what resonated with me most about this experience! Cool, you have been to so many races! I can see how you could get hooked! Oh, you have got to go to at least one race! It is so different from seeing it on TV or going to an empty track. Sure, dirt tracks are a thrill, too, but NASCAR is like hanging our with the big boys. By the way, forgot to mention the how fast they change those tires, blew my mind seeing it so up close and personal!
  8. A buddy gave my better half some tickets, so I decided to check it out with him., last year. Did not see the flag go up and down, as we did not see the start or the finish. But we did see it on TV lol I just did not not want to deal with the rush of the crowds. I know, my bad. I got to say, I was quite impressed by the power I heard, when the cars raced by. It was incredible. I had more fun walking around the track then sitting in the bleachers. Even though, we did have pretty good seats. Well, I do not remember the name of the race, but I would go back for another. Pretty sure, I won't be invited, though. lol
  9. I agree, sure why not. When we were young, one of my uncles was into this sport, big time. I see in another post, you talk price. I am just going to respond to that question here, so I am not double posting content. Got to tell you, he did it on a teacher's salary and it rocked the budget so much, my aunt had to wheel him in, so to speak. He never gave it up, but closed the pocket book a little bit. For example, he liked to buy new go-karts. I know because he gave one of his old ones to me and my sisters. My dad would not let us put a engine on it. We use take turns pushing each other around in it around the block. Did not last long, some SOB stole it out of our garage, Pretty sure knew who it was, too, some rich punk, never figured out why he could just not have his parents hook him up. But back to your question, I know if my brother had been born at this time and old enough to walk, he would of let him race.
  10. Oh that is too funny! Did you listen to the sounds of drag strip racing? I don't know, if I would listen, but hey people buy and listen to the sound of rain falling and the likes, so why not. I do like the cover of the album. Wonder how much this would run to buy, might make a good gift for that certain individual. I mean really my husband would probably love it or might think, I lost my mind for a minute.
  11. IDK Someone might think this funny, or maybe not. You just have to take into context this story is from days gone by. Just heard this story recently, thought I'd share. Story Subject One - Grandfather, kind to his grandchildren, strict with his eleven children - and don't mess with him type of owner in his paint & body shop. Subject Two - Disgruntled customer looking over the body & paint work - saying they don't like the job, and not going to pay. Result Subject One - Grandfather pulls out a tire ratchet, smashes car and asks how they like it now? Subject Two - Disgruntled customer takes his insurance job to another shop. You would think this would have been a one time scenario, not. Like I said from days past loooooong ago, yeah times have changed.
  12. Well, I have not personally owned any of these rides, would be nice. Since my dad worked in his dad's paint & body shop, they would get in a lot of totaled cars back in the day. My dad would bring them home, we'd ride in them, until they got sold. Gonna have to ask, about these Pontiac's. Just like the old ads! I vote for car #1. ===== Hey, I even see a gold one in the bunch, balthazar. lol
  13. I like to look at old advertisements, and ran across a few, that thought would share a few.
  14. Well, the bottom line for me is,at least, the East Liberty Plant in Ohio won't be shutting down. I say, keep those workers working.
  15. Yeah, my husband was pretty darn happy, for it being the original engine the rockers were in such good condition with no sludge or no ticks for almost 102,00 miles! Oh, lol, I forgot about the pearl option, too. If I were too paint, the caddy, I would go with the satin and paint it black and keep the roof white. But back to your project, I do like the color choices you narrowed down to, it is going to look good in any of those color palettes. I would have never thought about bronze or gold.
  16. I think Cadillac needs to dig deeper into their advertising and marketing campaign. They are limiting themselves, when they talk about this whole new generation that had parents driving other makes and models. They really need to Reach Out to the new generation and prove to the public at large that Cadillac truly was THE car to drive and it still is for generations to come. Their new designs bore me. I say bring back the old school, add today's cutting edge of new technology and watch the younger generation eat it up.
  17. Okay. I admit it. I must be too cheap because I chocked at the price tag. Sure, I was impressed with the mile range, understand the long term saving out of pocket, and fully advocate the concept, but I am going to take a pass. Plus, don't really care for the new Ocean Blue color (yeah, I know it comes in other colors, but, just thought I would throw it out there).
  18. Oh, the last line, "If you happen to be one of those who cares about looks and wants something a bit more comfortable, then you might want to look at the Germans" made me laugh aloud, being of German heritage. So the question that arises from my mind is, just how well can this Caddy keep up on the autobahn? What kind of bothered me from looking over this design is the visibility of the front windshield. Looks to be at a funny angle, but maybe that is just me.
  19. 1970 AMC Gremlin [Perhaps this is a bit unfair, but I know this only b/c I know someone who is a HUGE fan of AMCs in general, but not as much as I am a fan of the Caprice Classic!] Cort www.oldcarsstronghearts.com 1979 & 1989 Caprice Classics | pigValve, paceMaker, cowValve "I didn't mean to take away your dreams" __ Hootie & The Blowfish __ 'Only Lonely' Omg. This made me seriously laugh! It is kind of a family joke when we talk about one of my aunts (side note - I have one big family 17 aunts and 16 uncles - mom and dad came from big families lol) prized possessions. Yep, it was a 1970 AMC Gremlim - purple, her favorite color and so fitting for the 70s. It was a Birthday present and before it was delivered, my dad put a clear coat on it for her down at his shop. One of my other Uncles had just got his drivers license ( I think) and was down helping my dad out, and he took that baby out for a spin! It was a big ole family secret for many years! Back then, she would not have been so keen to have one of her brothers drive her baby first! What I loved about that car, besides how cool I thought it looked, was that brand new 8-track! lol So, thanks for the piece of trivia! I am so going to have to share it!
  20. Sorry, did not catch your response sooner. Thought I had this post tagged to get a notice.... Oh, yes you have big plans going on! I like the idea of a metal color, seems to fit and you can't go wrong with whatever color you end end choosing. Are you learning toward a flat or metallic finish? Well, figured you would be matching all your tires, but i really like to see those old rims, so glad it was in the picture. I kind of like the rims you have on the back right now. Kind of understated bada** esp. with your fins being the spot light bringing in the details of the whole rear of the car. I hope you share a picture when you get the front-end on. Good you have the seat frames! No matter what material or pattern you decide on, sure it will give it a clean, sleek look inside. Are you going to do it yourself or hire the job out for the upholstery after you decide on what you want? For sure, I agree with you about the amazing patterns that came out in cars during this time period. I don't know may seem a little overboard to others, but I could spend hours looking at the littlest details. I am kind of into the diamond pattern these day. i saw one on the new 2016 Nissan maxima coming out. But it seemed a little too muted in the tan color scheme, but it seems diamonds are coming back. Well, not that I am on top of everything that has or is coming out, just happened to come across the article and image on the front page of this forum the other day. Well, you have a clean slate to work with, so whatever you choose, it sounds fun to look at all your options! Speaking of reading articles, I read another one about how cars use to be inspired by clothing trends (esp. women's) like the fabric, style lines, and hue colors and on the flip side how fashion was inspired by cars and how they combined the two into advertising. Don't really see that too much these day. I mean sure cars the two still have promote prestige, power, and style, but it is on a different level. Well, that is just my opinion, and a little off topic. And - NO DOUBT - your end result is going to have some power behind it!
  21. I agree. Although this is terrible, it is good no-one was injured! I mean come now, why is someone storing so many cars with an estimated value of $100,000 each, without some kind of automatic emergency sprinkler system? Seems like something fishy about who ever was in charge of taking car of these caddy's. I think they may have been over-exaggerating on the value of the total loss. Granted a tragic loss, but not so sure on that stated value.
  22. The picture really does not do this vehicle justice. I was reading an article out by the Detroit Free Press, and the side view was shown. This combination truck/car kind of reminds me of the old El Camino put out by Chevy years ago. Although, I must admit this Hyundai Santa Cruz sits up up and the aerodynamics look sharper! Should be interesting, if research shows consumers showed a high enough interest for them to go through with this design and offer it to the public.
  23. I know it sounds a bit superficial, but I am really drawn to this lime green color. Not that I would actually want to drive a car with such a flamboyant color. lol I also like the how the front tires fit in so high up the body of this Civic. Never really been a fan of Honda's, but I think it is going to turn out to be a pretty good seller to it those that are a fan.
  24. Wow! Your project- frame-off is more extensive then we did on our Caddy! Like I said, I wish we had the money and time to take the body down to this level. Do you have an end color choice? That is one heck of an engine you have there. I take it that is the original engine you are working with and adding to? Is that one of the original wheels that I see in front? Were you able to save any of the original interior? I got to say I like how your fins have this low profile look! Thanks so much for posting. Looking forward to more! Here is a picture of a piece of our original engine off the caddy. The engine was never rebuilt and pretty happy with how good of shape the heads are still in. Mostly routine maintenance under our hood. Yeah, I hear you and thanks! Thanks! Thanks!
  25. Thanks. Yeah, since my dad was an auto painter for years, I learned a lot from him. Truthfully, not having the original paint or at least the original color scheme for that year makes me cringe. We did not paint it this color! Yet, I am sure you know what it would take to get the color back to the original color. Way over our budget, even if we primed it ourselves. Quite the process! I am thinking you have posted you B-59 here, I will go have a look. Yeah, I hear you on the better places to advertise, just not interested in spending any money to advertise. Maybe even not sure gonna sell it. Like I said, we have a price set, with a little negotiation room, but know what we value it at and what it goes for according to the "experts". It can only be for the person who "really" wants it. lol
