The best one I looked at was a '79 Caprice, but I didn't like it because it was 2-tone green. Price was right (under $2K), but I didn't want the 2-tone green.... LOL! We differ a bit on that Saturday morning routine . For me ... the worst thing was oversleeping on Saturday and NOT having time to wash (when I was young, that term was used loosely, of course) "my" '76 MC (it was my parents' car) in the morning.... And, interesting about why old cars are in hot demand by "baby boomers", etc. It certainly is personal preference.... Though I agree newer cars have "creature comforts" and better gas mileage, I'd rather be driving something older ... that costs less overall to drive, especially in insurance rates and payments (I have no car payments currently) . Course, I don't want to wait TOO long. As for the Caprices ... most of the ones I've seen around here either have vinyl tops (which I do not want) or look like they've been beaten to a pulp. So, the search continues.... I'm still sorta kickin' myself for not buying that 2-tone green '79 Caprice I saw late last summer/early last fall. IMHO, it is time for a Chicagoland-area gathering. Based on responses to the poll/questions I asked recently, this is an informal gathering. Attendees are welcome to bring their car to show, show up to visit, or both! We may attend a car cruise Saturday night. Spring is here; time for the Spring/Summer Thread! It has been (and, in some ways, continues to be) a LONG, cold, snowy winter, for some of us.... BUT, with spring arriving, I'm looking forward to... ... softball/baseball (Dad's Friday night Elgin city league team; bro-in-law's Tuesday night Elgin city league team). ... warmer temps and SUNSHINE! ... getting my older 4 Monte Carlos out (hopefully earlier than I did last year). ... gatherings, reunions, car cruises and shows (including the July 26 Chicagoland area gathering). ... traveling/road trips, though not as much as I'd like (including Pennsylvania, June 27-29; Indiana / Ohio / Pennsylvania / New Jersey /Maryland / Arlington VA, August 8-12; central-southern IL / St Louis MO, October 3-5). And, yes, one of these years I WILL get to Boston/NY AND to CA via MN, etc, etc, etc.... ... finding a winter beater ('77-'79 Caprice; '89-'90 Caprice 9C1; Monte Carlo?; something else?) for next winter ... and MAYBE adding a Monte Carlo SS to my MC family (though, I wouldn't mind a 1975 Caprice Classic convertible, either)! I could quote a bunch of other songs, since it is a theme that runs through many songs (country and rock and otherwise) and writings.... BUT, as I was listening to that Brad Paisley song the other day, it reminded me that the idea of "better days" and "the best years of one's life" have always made me wonder. Maybe I've never really understood the concept or the human nature of labeling what the "best years" or "better days" are, but it just seems to me that one can't really determine what those are ... until one's life has ended. Sure, you can look back and say, 'Oh, those were better days' or 'Those were the best years of my life' or 'They don't make 'em like they used to' ... but why? After all ... imho, we should be living in TODAY ... and working to make TODAY be the "best", etc. Shouldn't we? *pauses* Course, I'm no where close to doing that all the time. I love to reminisce ... and I love historical things, old cars, old songs, old homes, etc. But, is nostalgia and historical knowledge/data the same as labeling "better days" or "the best years of one's life"...? It was the first day I had the older 4 MCs out and I decided to take the '81 MC SC on a bit longer drive. I was traveling down a road that just had changed speedlimits a week or so prior, from 55 down to 45 (due to new home construction). Anyway, I THOUGHT I was "safe enough", but I came over the top of a hill, spotted the cop car, looked down ... speedometer read about 52....ah, crapola. He said he clocked me at 55. Funny thing is ... the '81 MC SC is the SLOWEST of all of my MCs... he he. *shrugs* I took a defensive driving class and the ticket never appeared on my record.
