Dave, Either place will be easy to find ... the one along Barrington Rd is near IL RT 72, I-90, etc. The one on Elgin's FAR west side, is near Randall Rd and I-90, etc. BTW ... a quick note that I should've made CLEAR in the previous post: A few people have already suggested that I split the charges amongst those attending for the use of the forest preserve at which we meet. This is NOT an option. I am 100% committed to keeping this gathering as least costly to attendees as possible, which means that I will pay whatever the permit/reservation fee is OUT of MY OWN pocket. The only costs attendees will be responsible for are food (which should not be out of the ordinary...we all need to eat anyway), gas (sadly, I can't control this one), and, if people come from a distance, lodging. If many people need lodging, I am more than happy to contact lodging places to attempt to secure a lower/group rate.... So, whatya thinkin' Dave? And, gm4life ... sure would be cool if you were able to join us, though, it won't be in Galena ... sorry . **UPDATE** I went for a drive today (Saturday, March 15) and narrowed the location to 2 picnic areas. Also, I learned recently that Cook County charges $50 for a picnic permit with usage of a covered shelter. I am waiting to hear back from Kane County to determine fees/permits needed. Depending on which county charges less (and/or which one is open for July 26), we will meet at one of these 2 places: Kane County = Burnidge Shelter in the Burnidge-Paul Wolff Forest Preserve (Big Timber and Coombs Rds) (OR) Cook County = Barrington Rd Pond area in the Popular Creek Forest Preserve (Barrington Rd, just south of IL RT 72) If anyone is interested, we can always visit Raceway Woods in Carpentersville: http://meadowdaleraceway.homestead.com/ ALL ARE WELCOME! This will be a RAIN OR SHINE gathering. If it rains, we will have (hopefully) a shelter in the picnic area ... or, either place is relatively close to multiple restaurants. More to come...and once I learn which county charges less, I'll start a new thread.... LOL! I'm not laughing at you or the situation, Dodgefan ... I am chuckling, though, at the other driver knowing you were the one he almost hit. So many times, drivers will do things that make me shake my head ... like speeding up to pass others ... only for us to "catch up" at the next stoplight. Given that you don't see too many '87 MC LSs on the road anymore, it's always interesting to see the look on drivers' faces when they see my car parked next to them at the next stoplight when they think they've sped up enough to never see my car again ... he he. *grins* Wouldn't that be nice? For the most part, I agree with you, here ... except, of course, for those I HAVE met in person. IMHO, meeting people in person really makes the message board experience that much more enjoyable, entertaining and personal. At least, for me, anyway ... I don't know about anyone else. I can't say I've ever had a bad experience meeting anyone from C&G or any of my other boards/groups, for that matter. Course, I don't know if others think the same, but that's how I feel about it.... Between the death of a beloved/valued member on one of my heart boards and a phone call from a friend who I haven't heard from in a long time because he is no longer on any message board, it has been quite an interesting week. These instances reminded me of several members from all of the different boards who either are truly no longer with us, or just have "fallen off the face of the earth" due to not posting or visiting the forums anymore.... When I notice people haven't posted in a while, I'll wonder what happened to 'em and hope/pray that all is well. Heh ... given a few other things going on now and over the course of the last month or so, I've thought about taking a "leave of absence" from the forums for a while, but each time I think I will, another new subject is posted by someone that keeps me active. Course, it's always interesting to see the choice of "topic title" people use for their thread-starting posts.... This got me to wondering if I'm just addicted to the boards and to reading what others have to say ... or, if I stay because of the people. Perhaps it is a mixture of the two...but, for me, I think it is more because of the people, because I miss regulars when they don't post for a long time...and I don't like missing anything or anyone.... How about you? Why do you visit the forums? Addiction? People connections? Or? This past week, I found myself in "defensive driving" situations ... one worked out very well, the other almost ended not so well.... The first, the one that almost ended up badly, happened en route to work. I was on a 4-lane road in Schaumburg in the right-hand lane, which was full of cars waiting to turn right (myself included). We were moving, but not at the speed limit. I noticed that the car behind me darted into the left-hand lane, but thought nothing of it, because I thought the driver was going to be turning left at the upcoming intersection. I was wrong. Instead, the driver apparently realized I was going slow because of the line in front of me. Before I knew it, he had darted back into the right-hand lane right in front of me. All I could do to avoid an accident was slam on my brakes ... and hope for the best. Unfortunately, the pavement was still damp that morning and my car skidded. I kept control of it and narrowly avoided a collision. The second happened en route to work on a 4-lane road within Elgin's city limits. I was in the left lane and a huge Ford SUV was in the right lane. We were approaching an intersection notorious for people trying to dart out into traffic to cross or turn left ... because the intersection has no lights ... just stop signs for the cross, 2-lane street. I happened to notice that the Ford was turning right and spotted, out of the corner of my eye, a Honda minivan inching its way out from the street on the right-hand side. Instinctively, I slowed down because I knew the minivan driver could not see my '87 MC LS due to the Ford SUV. Sure enough, the minivan darted out ... directly in front of me. Had I not anticipated that and kept going the speed limit, I would've T-boned the minivan, no doubt. You should've seen the minivan driver's look of horror when she realized I was in the other lane coming right at her.... I was shaking after the first incident ... because I felt I could've/should've anticipated what was to happen and slowed down to avoid having to slam on the brakes. I was also pissed at the other driver.... Yet, at the same time, I didn't shake at all at the second incident ... because I anticipated, evaluated the situation, and took appropriate action before anything took place.... And, I wasn't pissed at that driver ... I knew it was an honest mistake because of the limited view. I was, however, a bit annoyed, realizing that we were both lucky I took the action I did ... otherwise, well, I don't want to think about what would've been inevitable.... Anyone else have any "close calls" recently? Cort:34swm."Mr Monte Carlo.Mr Road Trip".pig valve&pacemaker WRMNshowcase.legos.HO.models.MCs.RTs.CHD = http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort "I'm not fine" ... Indeed. I watched the CBS 2 Morning News the Monday morning after his death, for as long as I could before I had to head to work. I saw highlights of the memorial service as well. Dave ... it'll be LATE July..... NEWS...! DATE OF EVENT = SATURDAY, JULY 26, 2008 @ 2p (or so) until ... ? PLACE OF EVENT = TBD I've ruled out... ...Volo IL. It seems that you have to have a confirmed number of people to walk through the museum (i.e. buy tickets and see cars like The General Lee, KITT, and cars for sale) to reserve an area for gathering. Along with not having a confirmed number of people attending, I don't envision this gathering costing much (except for food). Also, I'd rather spend time visiting with people...and the bulk of the original responses seemed to indicate the same thing.... ...Morris IL. While I originally thought this was a great idea considering the easy access from roads like I-80 and IL RT 47, I've realized that it would be harder for me to get arranged, etc. I know how this looks (selfish), but a few people even suggested I host this at the place where my older 4 MCs are stored (not going to happen, so don't worry!). Thus, FINAL CHOICES for PLACE: CARPENTERSVILLE IL, Raceway Woods: http://meadowdaleraceway.homestead.com/ [AND/OR] CARPENTERSVILLE IL, Spring Lake Forest Preserve: near/around IL RTs 62 and 68 [OR] ELGIN IL, Paul Wolff Park/Burnidge Forest Preserve-Park: corner of Big Timber and Coombs Rds [OR] STREAMWOOD IL, Popular Creek Forest Preserve: near/around IL RTs 58 (Golf Rd), 59 (Sutton Rd), and Barrington Rd Whatdya think? Anyone still interested? If people ARE still interested, I'll tally votes for the place ... and then start a new topic/thread with the final details/notes. I've wanted to do something like this for a while, because of successful/regular gatherings of people in other areas of the country ... AND because of the fun/awesome times I've had meeting people in informal gatherings during my road trips, including (but not limited to) these: http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/0410/Oct%2...ssicr8_jpg.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/0508/Aug%2...0gdtmn_jpg.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/1106/DSC07579r8_jpg.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/1106/DSC07591r8_jpg.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/1106/DSC07595r8_jpg.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/200711/RT1..._group_jpg.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/200711/RT1...group2_JPG.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/200711/RT1..._Group_JPG.html http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort/200711/RT1...rionIL_JPG.html ...and I've wanted to have a similar gathering in this area at home.... ...to figure out what to do next. No, not me; Mark Suppelsa, now former Fox 32 Chicago anchorman. This week, he turned down what is termed by the media a "lucrative" contract to continue as the main anchorman for Fox 32's 9p newscast. According to him during a visit Tuesday morning on WTMX's Erik and Kathy Show, it isn't about the money. Instead, he feels blessed to have the means and the time to take 3 months off [he has to wait 90 days before going back on the air, per his contract with Fox 32] to relax, enjoy his family ... and decide what he wants to do with his life. This news, and especially the interview Tuesday morning I heard on the radio en route to work, made me wonder how many of us would love that type of an opportunity ... to be able to afford to take off for 3 months to figure out what and where to go next. I know I would. To be VERY CLEAR, I AM HAPPY with my job and other aspects of my life currently ... but, sometimes, I wonder about "the road not taken" [i.e. what would have happened if WSM radio in Nashville TN had responded to my letters/calls requesting an internship there, before the deadline to have an internship secured for that January term ... what would've happened if I didn't have an interest in and/or purchased Monte Carlos ... what would've happened if I wasn't born with a heart defect ... and other various instances]; about if I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing (should I be doing something else?; is something or someone missing in my life?); and about "doing something out of character". Problem with the "out of character" part of it, at least for me, is that if I DID do something out of character, too many people know me well enough that someone just might wonder if my identity had been stolen ... LOL! As for the "road not taken", well, it's a thought path better not traveled.... Still, if I had 3 months to decide what to do next, I'd do a lot of road tripping, meet more people, see where else I might like to live, consider other career opportunities/moves, do a lot of "to do" list projects/activities, figure out if something (or someone?) is missing in my life ... and, of course, get some rest.... *sighs* And, while I may be a little jealous of the opportunity Mark Suppelsa has, even without 3 months off for myself ... some of that, if I find the motivation and the energy, can still be accomplished.... Maybe. So, who else wonders/wanders sometimes? Or, maybe it is just my ramblin'/road trippin' nature....
