  1. We probably could use a thread for stuff people are looking for in JYs... something that can be easily printed to take with us on a JY trip.
  2. You're an adventurous soul to hit the JY on such a hot day. Being in the pine barrens, my local JY is brutal in the average heat... the sand is 2 feet deep in spots and I swear they laid out the place to maximize walking. Its like slogging through the Sahara... but with slightly more humidity... it just drains you in no time. I can't imagine being their today.

Not just patina, but check the plates! Those appear to be ABC-123 NJ issue... so those are from roughly late 1970. Its possible the owner of the car has as much patina as the car. Also, if I'm reading the plate number correctly, this was from a run of experimental reflectorized plates. My father had a commerical plate from this run on his IH boom truck. NJ wouldn't make another reflectorized plate until 1993.
  4. Best thing about the 400s is their easy to find and you can drop a new 455 crank forging that already has the smaller mains. That way you get the advantages of the 455 without the oiling issues some have with the large mains. IIRC, you can do the same with the 389, but you get a 428 or something. I'd have to check the math.
  5. IIRC, I have 6 400s... 3 Pontiac 400s still in the cars, 2 Pontiac 400s out of the car and 1 Chevy 400 SB in the '76 Blazer. When I got the Blazer, my father was pissed. He hated the 400 SBC... I figured it can't be too bad if it had survived 25 years... and swapping in a different motor (like a 350 with the 400's crank) is no big deal. The engine has been as fine as can be expected for a somewhat worn out example. My problems started when I put a brand new distributor in it.
  6. Especially forums the have members that have access to FSMs, Hollanders and the Standard Catalogs... ;-)
  7. Time to fire Dan Akerson... he's up on a podium sputtering BS thats only going to P.O. GM's customers... unless he is gullible enough to think that GM won't be selling fossil fuel based engines in the next couple years. Quotes like this tend to haunt people at performance review time. You got your mulligan. Keep it quiet before it starts looking like a trend.

Sweet. I wish I lived at 455 or at least 428 or 400. Being a map fiend, I noticed that one of the broken streets in the area was renamed Pontiac Ave (or Rd or St) during the time in which 911 was installed in the mod '90s. Knowing that the people living on such a street have the say in the renaming, and that some people's addresses are weighed more than others, I had to drive by... and sure enough, there is a big garage and a few '60s Ponchos at the only residence on the street.
  9. Yep. More people living in their vans... DOWN BY THE RIVER!
  10. I've yet to find any buggy problems with Androids... assuming we are talking about a pure Android setup. Once Verizon bastardizes it, all bets are off. You want to see buggy... look at what the carriers (esp. Verizon) have done to bring Blackberries to their knees. Cyanogen is your friend.
  11. This is why I do all my own work. The few times I've sent a car to get tweaked, its always wrong... Told the guy to ONLY put a LSD rear in my wagon... otherwise, don't bother. Of course I get a one legger. Got my brakes bled... since the car was manual brakes, they couldn't fit the vacuum unit over the master cylinder... so they relocated all the crap on my firewall. Took the radiator in to replace a plastic side tank... they replaced the WRONG side! Jiffy Lube... oil filter loosens up next day while 1000 miles from home, had to tighten it on a red hot car on the shoulder of I-95 with no jack. Jiffy Lube also vacuumed all the fuses out of my sister's Firebird... when the car wouldn't start, they found all the fuses in the vacuum canister and put them in random spots. By the time she got home, half the fuses were blown... its a wonder the car didn't burn to the ground. Took me forever to dig up replacements and get them all straightened out. You know, I don't have 100% success... but at least I don't have 100% failure... which is the case when I try to get something done by a "mechanic". Only thing I get done at this point is tires... and I'll eventually buy a tire machine and balancer.
  12. Actually, it WAS used in a car... in 1963... a 336 would have violated GM's cubic inch-body weight rules, so the engine was marketed as a 326. GM got wind of this and in 1964 326s actually were 326s. Not sure if these were the same bore/stroke as the Pontiac engines used in GMCs or not.
  13. Two tones with white/blue, I prefer seeing a more medium to royal blue. IMHO, the white tends to make the Midnight Blue look like black. I was considering someday doing a white/blue two tone on the currently white '92 Firebird... so that the blue on the lower parts of the body are very light to give the impression that the car is chiseled out of a cube of snow. Kind of a 'Icebird'... with a very subtle "freezing chicken" on the hood.
  14. Wrapping up the electrical bits is mostly to avoid shooting any high pressure fluids that might squeeze past the seals... getting that stuff wet it not a problem, but you don't want to soak it. Use Gunk on the really dirty stuff... especially stuff you need to scrub... and Simple Green on the rest. I like using something that has pressurized, heated water... not just warm water from a hose... since I don't have a good pressure washer, I guess thats why I don't clean too much. LOL.
  15. There have been versions of the Ute/Commodore which are worth well past $40K... but they would be special items, akin to the new ZL-1 Camaro. Of course, this is what GM legend was once made of.
  16. Didn't GM already do the perceptionally "low tech" Corvette versus the DOHC "high tech" "Corvette" in the form of the XLR/XLR-V? The public already voted with their wallets and "High Tech" failed here.
  17. Yeah, between the heat, getting a summer cold, a few leftover aches and pains and just being generally bummed out... its been a rough few days.
  18. You know, the name does seem familiar. Perhaps High Performance Pontiac used them for some exhaust work or something.
  19. Ocn, did they weld the entire system? Or did they leave some mechanical fasteners so you can remove it without a sawzall?
  20. Even considering the lousy quality of the video, I'd have to disagree about it coming completely off the ground. Something seems to jar the wheel, though... tough to judge what. Its hard to predict how an "exotic" suspension like that on the limo would behave, considering its helping hold up 8 tons plus. I still question that dropping the suspension was intentional or accidental, especially considering that if left the limo "inoperable". Balancing the idea of "giving away" a secret feature of the limo (hydraulic height adjustability) versus the showing off a possible Achilles heel of the limo and leaving the President hemmed in behind it, I would think they would choose the former... and raised it back up to get back on the road.
  21. I actually prefer Treat. Sliced and fried. Haven't had it in years, though. Seeing your (so far) post count is low, it probably is automatic. Oldsmoboi would be the one with the answer. Generally on most forums, because some spambots have figured out how to post and the solution is to require either a certain threshold of posts or a certain threshold of content vs. links. Don't take it personal, its just a small way admins can vent considering how much of a PITA these spambots are.
  22. Yes, a nice black black '66 Toronado with "High toned son of a bitch" written on the back...
  23. I remember when it seemed like every farmer in south Jersey had a '68-'72 Chevy/GMC pickup in that awful aqua color. They didn't get a cap, though.
  24. Looking at further articles, it looks like the President was in another limo. The Secret Service released a statement..
