    Geneva Motor Show: Infiniti QX30 Concept


    • Infiniti ads another subcompact luxury crossover to the fray


    Infiniti is the latest automaker wanting to join the luxury subcompact crossover craze with the reveal of the QX30 Concept at the Geneva International Motor Show.

    The QX30 Concept takes the overall design of the Q30 Concept and gives a bit of off-road flavor. Ride height has been increased to 7.1 inches and rides on a set of 21-inch wheels. The front end now sports larger air vents underneath the grille and new skid plate around back.

    "The QX30 Concept looks as capable as it is meant to be. The artistic touches we put in lift the crossover to another level from being just another utility vehicle," said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti Executive Design Director.

    Powering the concept is a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder paired with a seven-speed automatic.

    Infiniti says the QX30 will be heading into producing next year, with a wide range of powerplants.

    Stylish and Capable: Infiniti QX30 Concept debuts in Geneva

    Hong Kong/Geneva – Infiniti has revealed the stylish and highly capable QX30 Concept, the design vision that will inspire a new premium compact crossover.

    Making its debut at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show, the QX30 Concept cements Infiniti's ambitions to expand into the global premium compact segment, which is forecast for significant growth with the entry of younger affluent customers.

    Combining the sleek lines of the coupe with the command sitting and all-wheel drive of a crossover, the QX30 Concept is just as adept at navigating high street as it is exploring weekend getaways.

    "The Infiniti QX30 Concept foreshadows an entry in the premium compact segment that provides a new alternative to customers in this segment," said Roland Krueger, Infiniti President and CEO. "The vehicle embodies our conviction to give customers the freedom to go wherever they want, whenever they want – in a way that expresses their individualized character."

    Expansion into growing segment

    By the end of this decade, Gen X and Gen Y will represent about 80 percent of buyers in the premium compact segment. Research among this new generation of buyers shows an increasing rejection of traditional notions toward premium cars.

    Their idea of a premium car has less to do with size or power but more to do with distinctive design and outstanding execution.

    With its sharp looks and original features, the QX30 Concept was designed by an international team to appeal to these global customers who are less likely to follow tradition. The concept's compact footprint matches their search for a product that suits their urban lifestyle. The elevated stance of the crossover also provides a higher visual perspective in city traffic and in parking maneuvers.

    Infiniti first signaled its intentions to enter the premium compact segment when it revealed the Q30 Concept in Frankfurt in 2013. The introduction of the QX30 Concept is another building block in Infiniti's aggressive strategy to grow in key global markets, particularly China and Europe while expanding its offering in established markets such as the United States.

    Earmarked for production

    The QX30 Concept is the latest in a series of concept vehicles for which Infiniti has announced a definite and clear intent for production.

    The Q30 will be built in the U.K. this year while a sports coupe based on the Q60 Concept revealed in Detroit earlier this year will go into production next year. The QX30 Concept-inspired crossover will also be launched next year. Infiniti continues to broaden its lineup to cover the spectrum from smaller premium vehicles, namely the Q30, to full-size crossovers such as the QX70. In fact, Infiniti has drawn on its heritage of creating successful high-performance crossovers namely the QX50 and QX70 to craft the QX30 Concept.

    Art in utility

    To complement the higher stance of the QX30 Concept, Infiniti designers have added visual cues, which instantly identify the concept as a crossover.

    The body looks wider and thicker, thanks to the 21-inch wheels, large tires, and increased blackout around the wheel opening. The unique wheel design mixes three-dimensional milled aluminum and matte rubber material for an unconventional juxtaposition.

    The satin chrome front bumper is low with big side openings, giving off an air of rugged protection. The sense of stylish fortification is reinforced by the hardy kick plates under the doors and the tough-looking but sculpted skid plate in the rear.

    Even the roof racks have gone beyond their functional use. Extending toward the center line, they artistically "obstruct" the rear passenger's view through the glass roof, resulting in an inimitable perspective of the outside.

    Inside, the bold and dark environment harmonizes with the outdoors appeal of the exterior. All four seats have been streamlined for a suspended look, evoking a feeling of honed athleticism.

    The U-shaped seat frame is partially wrapped with a layer of premium Connolly saddle leather offset by blue stitching. The contrast between the exposed and covered parts of the frame lends a three-dimensional quality to the interior.

    Wide range of powertrains

    The QX30 Concept previews a family of vehicles which are designed to be matched with a wide range of powertrains, both gasoline and diesel. The array of powerplants is expected to cater to a variety of lifestyle aspirations around the world, depending on whether customers prefer a sportier or a more efficient drive.

    The QX30 Concept also hints at Infiniti's renowned sporting driving dynamics, and drivers can expect a nifty throttle response, especially useful when negotiating urban traffic.

    With big wheels and thick tires, the QX30 Concept not only looks rock-solid but also feels it, greatly helping to increase driver confidence both on-road and off.

    Human-centric connection

    The warm and inviting interior of the QX30 Concept beckons and engages the vehicle's occupants emotionally. The slimmed-down seats now become facilitators of the shared space, instead of barriers between the driver and the passengers. And the crossover becomes a safe place for occupants to connect with one another.

    Reflecting the value that customers place on connectivity, the QX30 Concept gives a glimpse into the level of technology available, features not typically found in compact cars. For example, Infiniti InTouch™ keeps the driver connected to his digital world when on the move.

    I have to hand it to them, for once a body style I like and an interior that I would be happy with. Probably the best I have seen Infiniti put out ever.

    Does anyone else see GLA with Infiniti flare here... or just me?

     

    Agree you do see the GLA but over all I think Infinity really hit a home run here. :D

     

    The GLA side was nice but nothing to really interest me, now this interests me. :D

      I recently flew to the Florida Keys to get married, and our "premium sedan" rental turned out to be a 2017 Infiniti Q50 3.0T (RWD) with under 1,000 miles. At first, I was pleasantly surprised to have the sport sedan because the rental preview online was a Buick Lacrosse, but my enthusiasm faded during the 100 mile drive from Fort Lauderdale to Islamorada. I'll try to keep my impressions fairly brief and I can answer any questions in detail.

      Exterior: 7/10 - I find the Q50 completely forgettable. Infiniti has made much better looking cars, this design has some clean lines, but I think the front looks kind of melty and the rear is too generic.

      Interior Fit/Finish: 8/10 - Slick design and nice materials. Nothing mind blowing, but looked and felt appropriately luxurious.

      Comfort/NVH: 7/10 - The seats were good and highly adjustable with usable back seats, but the car had pretty bad road and wind noise. It wasn't a particularly good highway companion.

      Technology: 5/10 - Sitting in the car, you're greeted with a mess of controls and screens. There are two large screens right on top of each other in the center stack that serve separate functions, plus the gauge cluster display, all with their own controls strewn about, and none of them are intuitive. The stereo system left no lasting impression and pairing a new android phone was a pain in the ass.

      Powertrain: 8/10 - The 3.0T is the lower output version rated 300 horsepower. It made great power (albeit with noticeable turbo lag) and the 7-speed automatic was very responsive. I managed 26+ mpg on the drive pretty easily, I'd say this is par for the course. I actually think this engine is underrated to make the 400 horsepower version look better on paper. The sound at heavy/full throttle was underwhelming for an Infiniti V6, too appliance-like with practically no turbo noise.

      Steering/Handling: 4/10 - The car handled securely enough, but the EPS is simply awful. Way, way too light and completely numb with a large dead spot in the middle. I was constantly working to center the car in the lane. Sadly, I'm pretty sure this car did not have the widely panned steer-by-wire system, so I can only imagine how bad that must be.

      Brakes: 8/10 - Great pedal feel with linear response, but it was a tad touchy at the top of the pedal travel for my taste.

      Conclusion: I ended up wishing we had the Lacrosse shown on the rental website. The only major redeeming quality about this car was the powertrain, which I didn't get to play around with all that much. There's no way in hell I'd opt for this car again as a rental or recommend anyone buy one of them. Infinity needs to rediscover driving dynamics because the Q50 makes a case against investing in RWD if this is what they do with it.

      Subaru felt it was time to give the XV Crosstrek a makeover. The end result made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show as the XV (the U.S. version will be known as the Crosstrek).
      The big news for the XV/Crosstrek is Subaru's modular platform. First making its debut in the new Impreza, the new platform gives the XV a 70 percent increase in overall rigidity. Subaru says this helps give the XV improved driving dynamics and makes it much safer in the event of an accident. 
      Subaru has also made the XV a bit more capable when it comes to the rough stuff by adding hill descent control and X-Mode that optimizes the engine, all-wheel drive system, and brakes to improve traction on slipperier surfaces like mud and snow. This is on top of a ground clearance of 8.6-inches. 
      Power comes from a 2.0L four-cylinder with 154 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. This is paired up with Subaru's Lineartronic CVT. 
      There isn't a dramatic change to the XV's exterior aside from a revised front end that comes with a new grille and reshaped headlights. The interior is a different story as it features a revamped dashboard design with a 7 or 8-inch touchscreen, along with improved materials. 
      The XV will come with Subaru's EyeSight safety system - pre-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist - as standard. The Crosstrek in North America will get this an option.
      Subaru will begin sales of the XV in Europe later this year. We'll learn about when we get our hands on the Crosstrek next month at the New York Auto Show.

      With a name of the Mercedes-AMG GT Concept, you might think this is a teaser for the next-generation GT Coupe. Instead, it is the name for a four-door coupe concept that will spawn a production model within the next few years.
      It is clear that AMG wanted to draw a family connection from the GT Coupe to the GT Concept in terms of the design. The GT Concept gets the "Panamericana" grille and narrow headlights found on the coupe. The back features bulging fenders, narrow taillights, and a sloping roofline similar to the coupe.

The designation and fundamental design elements on the front and rear end denote the family affiliation to the AMG GT. The "EQ Power+" badging on the mirror camera indicates the increased performance that can be expected from hybridization at AMG.

The hood, reaching right to the wheel arches, underscores the AMG GT Concept’s sports car genes. This is also expressed by the eye-catching “Hot Red” paintwork featuring a finish that shimmers in the light like liquid metal thanks to a special formulation.
      The Mercedes-AMG principle that fascination is always linked with function also applies to the AMG GT Concept. Proof of this includes moving radiator shutters in the center and side air intakes which improves both aerodynamic and thermal efficiency, and are inspired by the AIRPANEL active air control system found in the AMG GT R.
      Rear assembly in hallmark AMG GT look
      The wide rear assembly provides an unmistakable AMG GT look with extremely slim horizontal tail lamps and the shape of the tailgate. The taillamp also has new light technology, located beneath the three-dimensional lens of the rear lamps: a ribbed cooling module is integrated into the lens to guide waste heat away.

      "Nano active fiber technology" for daytime running lamps and tail lamps
      With "nano active fiber technology," Mercedes-AMG is presenting future-oriented daytime running lamps for the first time. This is produced by a special bright light system in a freely styled light cord. The three-dimensional illumination effect lends the AMG GT Concept an autonomous light signature, which is flanked by numerous further accents in the high-tech headlamp. Two tubular rod lights illuminate the road surface directly in front of the car and constitute the driving light together with a large LED main headlamp. A red AMG logo within the headlight denotes a special attention to detail. Overall, the front headlamp is a three-dimensional, multilayered, high-tech component which underscores the technical standards of the AMG GT Concept.
      AMG Future Performance: forward-thinking hybrid drive system
      The drive system of the AMG GT Concept represents a completely new development. In 2010, Mercedes-AMG proved that a super sports car with a battery/electric drive system can be realized with the SLS AMG Electric Drive.       Maximum driving performance AMG’s primary focus on all projects and is why the AMG GT Concept has a balanced axle load distribution.       Power from two drive systems: performance operating strategy from Formula 1
      The operating strategy of the AMG GT Concept is derived from the hybrid powerpack of the MERCEDES PETRONAS AMG Formula 1 racing car and was developed through cooperation with the development engineers at Mercedes-AMG HPP (High Performance Production GmbH). As in Formula 1, the battery is charged while the vehicle is driven in order to have the maximum amount of electrical power available for use at all times.
      Scalable performance battery
      The energy storage unit in the AMG GT Concept is more powerful than conventional hybrid batteries, but at the same time is more compact and lighter – further proof of the systematic way in which the AMG Lightweight Performance Strategy is being implemented. Charging of the battery while driving can occur via brake recuperation or with the aid of the combustion engine if the battery charge has dropped beneath a certain charge threshold.
      On a modular basis this system is scalable upwards — the performance and capacity of the battery can be adjusted to meet specific requirements of customers or markets, for instance.

      It is clear that AMG wanted to draw a family connection from the GT Coupe to the GT Concept in terms of the design.
