New York 2012: Acura RL To Add An X? NSX Powertrain?

At next week's New York Auto Show, Acura will show off the new RL. Well, some new information has come to light about the next RL before its debut.

The next RL will have a new name. According to Ward's Auto, the RL will add an X to its name. That comes from Acura's vice president Jeff Conrad, during a media event for the new ILX and RDX.

Also, the RLX will share the same hybrid powertrain as the new NSX, albeit in a different configuration. Whereas the NSX will use a mid-engine layout, the RLX will go with a front engine layout.

"The technology has outstanding handling. The thinking behind the RL and NSX systems is the same, but the NSX's will be more sports-car focused." said Honda President Takanobu Ito.

Honda's Sport Hybrid SH-AWD uses three electric motors; two power the rear axle and one is integrated with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and gas V-6 for the front axle.

Ito didn't say whether the RLX will come in a non-hybrid version.
