    The Questionable Future of the Ford Taurus


    • The Future of the Ford Taurus is a bit cloudy

    The future of the Ford Taurus is uncertain. The once revolutionary sedan in the 80's, was brought back by Ford CEO Alan Mulally for the 2008 model year to replace the Five Hundred full-size sedan has seen its sales slump.

     

    Automotive News reports that full-size sedans like the Taurus have seen their sales tank. Through July, full-size sedan sales are down 28 percent. But the Taurus is one of the worst off. The blue oval has sold 29,867 Taurus sedans through July. That puts it on track to 2009, which was the worst year for Taurus sales with 45,617 models sold.

     

    Not helping matters is the Ford Fusion, which not only offers more passenger space than the Taurus, it also looks better. In July, Ford moved 25,105 Fusions.

     

    There was hope for the Taurus when Ford introduced a redesigned model for the Chinese market earlier this year. Despite Ford saying the model was going to be built and sold only in China, there was some hope that something like that could happen for the North American version. But Ford has been quiet on what the future holds for the Taurus.

     

    "Taurus continues to play an important role in our North America vehicle lineup," Ford spokesman Said Deep told Automotive News.

    So GM builds the Impala as a FWD car to compete with the Taurus when they had a better RWD ZETA platform that could have had its production moved stateside? Then the Taurus's future is in question while ZETA is going away as a less expensive alternative to the more premium focused RWD Cadillac platform? The Chevrolet SS should have been the Impala SS with a 3.6L V6 and even a turbo I4 for the regular model Impala!----FIGURES!!:(

    I've been hunting for a replacement for my POS cobalt as the family second car.  I test drove a used 2010 Taurus recently.  I can't believe how old and beat up it felt.  New, it feels good.  But overall, the Fusion has done so well, I can see why there is the question.

     

    Still, Ford is going to want and need some sedan as a range topper that can bring high margin, even at a low volume.  It's a stretch IMHO to expect to have the Fusion carry the torch from the 17,995 S model all the way up through a potentially 40k sell price.

     

    The current Taurus is way distinctive and opposite of the Fusion in looks, and that to some is nice.  The problem is its old and clunky.

     

    The Chinese Taurus is not the answer.  It looks too much like the Fusion and the interior doesn't appear to have much additional benefit.

     

    Ford can do two possible things here.  One is design a new Taurus on the Fusion platform that is a substantial stretch, has knockout and unique styling, and a much less pedestrian interior.  It can maybe still have the Taurus name at this point.

     

    The other possibility is similar to like what may end up happening with Chevy and the Impala.  Take it rear wheel drive like the SS, and sell it in much lower volumes.  AWD option.  Ford LTD?  Spawn a new Police chassis based on the new mustang?  think Hyundai Genesis competition.  Or Avenir if it goes.

     

    Will huge Taurus or LTD sell when all that demographic is seemingly buying crossovers like the Edge, or 3 rows, or import sedans, or..... Lincolns?

     

    Ford did it to themselves here.  The Fusion has been so popular it cannibalized itself..........

    The rumors I am hearing, combined with the fact there are no mules running around, kind of seals the Taurus fate.  At least until next gen D6 platform.

     

    Shame, I was hoping to see a nicely updated product on their stretched current updated platform.  Current car was only lacking in space really.

     

    But hey, bring out the Fusion SHO, ST, whatever they want to call it.  Makes more sense from a performance angle.  And my Fusion is roomier than current Taurus anyway, so not many to mourn.  Other than police fleet of course.

    What I love most about this idea, is that Fields is sticking it right to Alan M., who rode the return of the Taurus name wave for the remainder of his tenure at Ford, accomplishing little more than cutting people, plants and brands until profitable again.   Fields is a total product guy who is building up Lincoln and has introduced Ford Performance brand since his short term at helm.  You can bet he has far more product news coming.

    When mid-size cars keep getting bigger and better equipped, it sort of forces out this larger sedan segment.  If you look back 10-15 years ago at an Altima or Camry or Accord, they were small cars, now they are sort of big.  Or look at a 90s Taurus compared to today's.  That size creep has pushed the CamCord's and Fusions of the world up.  Then the Focus and Civic get bigger, then a Fiesta and Fit come into play.  Since the previous small car has gotten too big.

    Taurus is a huge car right now.  Honda doesn't have anything bigger than the Accord, because the Accord is as big as an Azera or Cadenza basically.  Go back to the late 90s when Ford had Escort, Contour, and Taurus,  the current Fiesta-Focus-Fusion are basically the size of those cars were.  The only difference is no Crown Vic, but cars that big don't sell anymore.  The absence of a Taurus could lead to MKZ sales, but they'd be giving up the Police market.

    The lack of a $50K executive express would certainly boost $55K MKS/Conti sales.  How much is the question, which I would guess would be somewhere in the 10-15% gain for Conti.  I say this knowing how popular SHO was for management lease specials, who would then have only one other choice.

    Guess that depends. Is Lincoln doing away with the MKS? If not, then the answer will be "not many" which goes in line with current Taurus and MKS sales figures.

    A widened and lengthened Fusion platform with "Senior Sedan" styling, a center console that is not 6 feet wide, and a seating position/greenhouse that is not like a bunker would be a welcome addition to Ford's civilian AND police fleets.

    The current Taurus is terrible in its packaging, but it is also on an ancient platform.  

     

    OCN is right, it does raise the question of where the police fleets go.  Not all of them want Explorers.

    Police fleets that still miss their Crown Victorias... but not as much as they miss their B-body Caprices from way back in the day.

      I haven't really started a running thread for the new car yet so here it is. I think I owned the car for 8 days when I had my windows tinted 20% all the way around. I cannot stand driving a car w/o tint or the look of a vehicle w/o tint.
      This is about the only "before" picture I have of it.

      Only a few days and $270 later...
      There was actually one thing I bought prior to buying a car that I wanted in my next vehicle... a dash cam. After the accident and knowing that had I not had a witness stop and give their side of the story it could have been a hell hole of he-said she-said.. So I did a little research and bought a Spytec A119 w/ the GPS(you can get it w/o the GPS). Super clean and muuuuch easier install than I expected. The only wires exposed are coming from the center console down and then again from the headliner to the cam itself. The rest is completely hidden.


      A view from the driver's seat... I don't see it at all. That's exactly what I wanted to keep it from being a distraction.

      This past week I finally ordered and received my wheels and tires. This is the first vehicle I've ever actually gone through with changing them as I've always wanted to on all of my vehicles.
      I went with a 18x8 Konig Oversteer wrapped in a 225/45ZR18 Continental ExtremeContact DW. I'll be using the OE setup for the winter months.
      I'll get better pictures of the wheels when I get home.

      OE wheel/tire combo = 47lbs

      New wheel/tire combo = 42.5lbs

       
      I think the only other thing that I would really like to do is wrap the chrome door outline in black or a black chrome.

      China’s Influence on GM, EVs, and Others!
      We saw just at the end of 2016 Toyota saying they would build a team to focus on EVs. This being a complete reversal of their pledge in 2013 to focus on Hydrogen as the practical alternative to traditional ICE autos. Toyota will have a long range EV auto out on the market for the 2020 auto year. Being that 2019 is when you're 2020 autos will start selling, this puts Toyota 4 years behind GM's Chevrolet BOLT EV.
      What would cause this change to happen? China is what has happened. China started to push the global auto industry by stating that 8 percent of auto sales in 2018 be each vendor has to be EV or plug-in hybrid. 10 percent is the number for 2019 and 12 percent in 2020.
      Toyota one would think should be fine with their Prius line of Hybrids until you realize that China has stated all hybrids such as the Prius, Volt and others built outside of China are considered ICE autos. Currently the only Hybrid being built in China that is a legal hybrid is the Cadillac CT6 plugin hybrid. Toyota is planning to start selling a plugin hybrid in China in 2018 as a 2019 model.
      So we are seeing that Toyota is being forced to get over their EV allergy and come up with a real plan to have a global EV on the market in 2019 as a 2020 model year. Daimler has a large EV roll out planned for the global market by 2021. VW has stated they will have multiple EVs rolled out around 2019 through 2021. So has BMW, Audi, etc.
      So where does that leave GM? What is GMs strategy now that China is flexing their muscle and setting some big standards for an auto company to play in their backyard?
      We have the Cadillac CT6 plugin hybrid. Chevrolet BOLT EV able to be exported to China. GM announced that they will start building a China market Chevrolet Volt as they start to push the Chevrolet brand in China next year. GM has also announced a Buick Velite 5 Hybrid for the Chinese market starting at 265,800 yuan or about $38,600 US. This will have a 72 mile pure electric mode before the generator kicks in giving it a 480 mile range. EVs in China are exempt from sales tax and license plate quotas.
      According to Fox Business news, Buick sold 1 million autos in China for calendar year 2016 rising to the number two auto brand sold behind Volkswagen. They also go onto say that Chevrolet has been selling legacy models only up till now and GM has announced 20 new models for China by 2020 the first being a China version of the Chevrolet Equinox. GM says China is demanding the same models they have in the US and as such, China and the US will be more aligned to have identical models. GMs China business is stated to have produced $2 billion in income last year. China clearly helping GM to sell 10 million cars in 2016 globally.
      How important is the China Market to GM? In the Month of January Cadillac sold 10,298 autos in the US. Cadillac sold 18,000 in China for the month of January. Clearly China will continue to take on a bigger and bigger role in GM’s ongoing growth.
      So where does that leave GM in regards to EVs, auto production, etc.? Reuters points to a story they did back in January 2016 where CEO Mary Barra stated that they could build the dies used to stamp the auto parts in china for 20 to 40 percent less than in Europe or the US. Dies will start to be built and shipped out worldwide from China. Clearly this would tend to show that GM will be affected by the China market more and more.
      So this brings me back to my original question of what is GMs plan for their EV strategy. We have seen and heard so much about the competition and yet with GM this seems to be a black hole. Knowing that GM sold about 1.5 million auto’s last year in China and now for next year 10 percent will have to be EV / Plugin Hybrids, that means 150,000 of these auto’s. For Volkswagen, this is an even bigger number since they are number 1 in the market and have no EV or hybrid that I am aware of.
      All Auto companies who do not have a specific plugin hybrid built in china or EV to import into China is going to find selling auto’s to be very difficult.

Green Car Reports says near 11,000 TDI models will soon be back up for sale once they are updated with new software, making them legal.
      Volkswagen does caution those interested in picking up a new TDI to call their nearest dealership to see if they have any in stock.
      But that's not all. Volkswagen is offering some massive discounts on these models. CarsDirect reports that Volkswagen is offering 0% APR for up to 72 months and $5,000 cash bonus if you decide to buy. Interested in leasing one? Volkswagen will offer a cash bonus of $8,500. 
      There are a couple of caveats to this offer. First, you need to have an excellent credit history to qualify for either offer. Second is that Volkswagen isn't advertising this offer.
      "We will not be advertising the available incentives from our financing arm as they [sic] vehicle availability will vary per dealership," said Volkswagen spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan.

      The new Volkswagen Tiguan looks to solve some of the pressing issues of the current model such as its size that puts it between subcompact and compact crossovers. But that doesn't mean the current Tiguan is leaving anytime soon.
      Hendrik Muth, VW’s senior vice president for product marketing tells Car and Driver that the current Tiguan will stick around for 2018 and 2019, wearing the Tiguan Limited nameplate. Muth explained this model will be aimed at more budget-minded buyers and those who don't want the bigger footprint of the new Tiguan. Another reason mentioned in Car and Driver's story is the current Tiguan saw its best sales in 2015 and 2016.
      One item that could put some people off from buying the Tiguan Limited is will not get the  6-year/72,000-mile warranty announced for the 2018 Atlas and Tiguan crossovers. Expect pricing to be announced sometime in the fall.
