Rumorpile: 2021 Mazda3 Gets Some New Engine Options

      This isn't the Mazdspeed3 you're looking for

2021 is going to be a very interesting year for the Mazda3 as two more engines become available.

According to separate reports from Jalopnik and Hagerty, Mazda will be dropping in the turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder found in the 6, CX-5, and CX-9. The engine produces 227 horsepower on regular or 250 on premium. Like other Mazda models with this engine, the 3 will have it paired only with a six-speed automatic. Both reports say the engine will have AWD as standard. According to Hagerty's source, the engine will be available on a new trim called Premium Plus - likely taking the top spot in the 3's trim lineup. The source also confirmed this engine will not mean the return of the Mazdaspeed name for a hot variant.

The other engine is a 2.0L four-cylinder that Jalopnik reports is only for the sedan. Hagerty believes this engine is the SkyActiv-G used in the previous-generation 3, not the SkyActiv-X with its compression-ignition system.

Not surprisingly, Mazda said they "“have not announced any details for the 2021 Mazda3," when asked about this.

I wonder if Mazda will survive this current decade. I honestly see them having to merge, or be bought outright to survive. A new consolidation in auto companies will happen in the 2020's I believe.

250 hp will make the 3 pretty fast.

Their sales still are a problem, small car sales are down, moving away from Zoom-Zoom was a bad marketing move. It will be hard for them when EV and self driving tech become more wanted by buyers and they don’t have it.

But who would buy or merge with Mazda, especially since Ford cut ties with them years ago?

Toyota could buy them but what would they really gain?   They could combine resources on small cars and get the Miata but that’s about it.  Unless Mazda develops a great inline six that Lexus could use but most Lexus are front wheel drive.

Doesnt Toyota have some sort of partnership with Mazda right now. Wont they be sharing small car platforms together or something to do with the next BRZ platform being partnered up with the next Miata platform?

Just the Mazda2 being sold as the Toyota Yaris.

Ah yes!  THAT is what I was remembering.

But I also remember another thing, and I googled and got this as an answer.

    https://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2018/03/mazda-toyotas-joint-venture-official-tons-corollas-mystery-model-await/

    Quote

Mazda and Toyota made their 50-50 joint venture official this week, creating a business entity called Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc. and boosting the presence of car manufacturing in the South. Production begins in 2021. For Mazda, it will be the company’s first assembly facility in the U.S., though it’s technically not a wholly-owned, standalone operation. There’ll be just as many Toyota Corollas leaving the factory as Mazdas.

Toyota and Mazda will build a manufacturing plant together in Alabama producing Toyota Corollas and a new Mazda CUV.  But I just read in another link that Toyota will NOT build the Corolla there, but producing a CUV since CUVs are the new bread and butter cars.

I also learned in another article

     https://driving.ca/mazda/auto-news/news/rumour-has-it-toyota-and-lexus-will-use-mazdas-upcoming-straight-six

    Quote

Toyota-Lexus will be dipping into the Mazda honey pot once more to put its second-generation Lexus RC coupe on a Mazda platform and use a Mazda engine.

While speaking with Toyota about something else, Best Car’s editors uncovered information suggesting the brand has plans to use Mazda’s upcoming straight-six engine and rear-drive platform not just for the replacement to the Japan-only Mark X sedan, but also in an upcoming Lexus coupe slated to fit between the Lexus RC and LC.

What’s more, Best Car suggests that Lexus will also use the platform for the generation after the next of the Lexus IS and RC. That means the first Mazda-Lexus models could arrive in 2022.

It’s a juicy rumour, but a rumour nonetheless. And if you want another one: there have been whispers about a full merger between Toyota and Mazda. Shhhh.

Makes sense because I just recently read that the new Mazda 6 will become RWD with an inline 6...  I was confused by that decision, but this article that I read today for the first time, I see why that is true...

Mazda buyers nowadays are wanting to find that spot in the market that makes then unique people, with a mix of the benefit of something that has some performance cred like the Germans and reliability cred of the Japanese.

-would like a BMW for performance but those are spendy, and they are European

-VW's drive well but those are not Japanese, so they probably don't hold up

-Like Japanese cars but don't want the Toyota or Subaru rap sheet on their personality

-So then there is Honda, but Honda is not upmarket and unique enough and Acura doesn't make anything appealing anymore either

-and they won't consider anything AMURCHAN

-and Hyundai and Kia are too uncool

too bad the 3 hatch is so ugly and impractical.

a CX-30 with this turbo would be super appealing to me

Perhaps you can ask Mazda to hire you for product development.

    • @David The first 8 minutes explains what the Porsche 911 GT3 RS is all about.  The first 8 minutes should give you an idea how much engineering goes into the RS model over and beyond not only over the regular GT3, but ANY road legal track ready sports car.   When somebody says the Corvette E-Ray is better than the Porsche 911, well...if you do pay attention to what and how the 911 GT3 RS is, then you'll realize quite quickly that the journalism is, like I said, lazy...   On a side note, the guy said that the GT3 RS made a Nurburgring time of 6 minutes 49 seconds.   The C8 Z06's time at the Nurburgring has not been set just yet. A set back on the course happened last year.  BMW and Tesla crashed and their cars.   Chevy is said to be back though.  It is also said that the time for the C8 Z06 will BE under 7 minutes  100%.   Some say it will be around the 6 minute 50 second mark.    Not too bad either way... 1.  The Porsche 911 lives on the Nurburgring.  It is its home playground.  Porsche spends and ENORMOUS amount of time and money to set records there.   2.  The C7 Z06 didnt set an official time there either because of set backs on the track involving other cars and accidents.  Yeah...the C8 too...   But, the Corvette does not live there and the Corvette also has other playgrounds that it needs to play in.  Like drag strips.   3.  Corvette is a jack of all trades sports car. The 911 is a precision machine and the Nurburgring is where it operates.  The Corvette operates at all kinds of racing digs.   Drag racing, street light to street light and at the Nurburgring.  For the C8 Z06 to get close to the 911 GT3 RS's time at the Nurburgring in its heavy GT luxury body is a testament of how good the Corvette engineers really are.  But it still remains that the GT3 RS is still a scalpel.  The E-Ray might be a great Corvette, but it all depends of what kind of comparison we want and what kind of 911 we want to talk about.  Anyway...enjoy Jay Lenos garage.   This episode is a great way to understand what the GT3 RS is without any fanboyism and without any positive or negative bias.  The narrative is as truthful as it could be.

    • Interesting review. Cannot complain about their negative being the only interior color is black or black and grey. Seems it the Georgia factory is where the GV70 EV is produced.
