    Rumorpile: 2021 Mazda3 Gets Some New Engine Options

      This isn't the Mazdspeed3 you're looking for

    2021 is going to be a very interesting year for the Mazda3 as two more engines become available.

    According to separate reports from Jalopnik and Hagerty, Mazda will be dropping in the turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder found in the 6, CX-5, and CX-9. The engine produces 227 horsepower on regular or 250 on premium. Like other Mazda models with this engine, the 3 will have it paired only with a six-speed automatic. Both reports say the engine will have AWD as standard. According to Hagerty's source, the engine will be available on a new trim called Premium Plus - likely taking the top spot in the 3's trim lineup. The source also confirmed this engine will not mean the return of the Mazdaspeed name for a hot variant. 

    The other engine is a 2.0L four-cylinder that Jalopnik reports is only for the sedan. Hagerty believes this engine is the SkyActiv-G used in the previous-generation 3, not the SkyActiv-X with its compression-ignition system.

    Not surprisingly, Mazda said they "“have not announced any details for the 2021 Mazda3," when asked about this.

    I wonder if Mazda will survive this current decade. I honestly see them having to merge, or be bought outright to survive. A new consolidation in auto companies will happen in the 2020's I believe.

    250 hp will make the 3 pretty fast.  
     

    Their sales still are a problem, small car sales are down, moving away from Zoom-Zoom was a bad marketing move. It will be hard for them when EV and self driving tech become more wanted by buyers and they don’t have it.

    But who would buy or merge with Mazda, especially since Ford cut ties with them years ago?

    Toyota could buy them but what would they really gain?   They could combine resources on small cars and get the Miata but that’s about it.  Unless Mazda develops a great inline six that Lexus could use but most Lexus are front wheel drive.

    Doesnt Toyota have some sort of partnership with Mazda right now. Wont they be sharing small car platforms together or something to do with the next BRZ platform being partnered up with the next Miata platform?

    Ownership and partnership with Subaru, but not Mazda that I know of or could find searching online.

    Just the Mazda2 being sold as the Toyota Yaris.

    Makes sense because I just recently read that the new Mazda 6 will become RWD with an inline 6...  I was confused by that decision, but this article that I read today for the first time, I see why that is true...

    Also thinking Toyota will be teaming up with them more in the future.....

    Mazda buyers nowadays are wanting to find that spot in the market that makes then unique people, with a mix of the benefit of something that has some performance cred like the Germans and reliability cred of the Japanese.

    -would like a BMW for performance but those are spendy, and they are European

    -VW's drive well but those are not Japanese, so they probably don't hold up

    -Like Japanese cars but don't want the Toyota or Subaru rap sheet on their personality

    -So then there is Honda, but Honda is not upmarket and unique enough and Acura doesn't make anything appealing anymore either

    -and they won't consider anything AMURCHAN

    -and Hyundai and Kia are too uncool

     

    too bad the 3 hatch is so ugly and impractical.

      Last month in the rumorpile, we reported that Mazda would be launching two new engine options for the 2021 3; a turbocharged 2.5L four and 2.0L four. Today, Mazda comfirmed the rumors with the announcement of 2021 3.
      The turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder is an engine we know quite well as it powers the CX-5, CX-9, and 6 sedan. Output is rated at 227 horsepower and 310 pound-feet (or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft when running on 93 octane). It will come solely paired with a six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. This model will be positioned above the top-line Premium trim and adds such items as a heated steering wheel, enlarged exhaust tips, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels,
      As for the 2.0L SkyActiv-G four-cylinder, again its an engine we know from the last-generation 3 and CX-3. It produces a modest 155 hp and 150 lb-ft. This engine is only available on the sedan.
      We don't have any word on pricing, but we're guessing that 2.0L sedan will be around $20k to $21k. As for the turbo, expect base prices possibly between $28k to $32k. The 2.0L sedan arrives at dealers in August, while the turbo comes in towards the end of the year.

Along with available i-Activ all-wheel drive, this package adds more conveniences such as Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather steering wheel and shift knob, black leatherette seats, rear armrest with cup holders and door mirror turn signals. The Select Package also upgrades to 18-inch gray aluminum alloy wheels.
      Opening to more potentials, the Mazda3 2.5S with Preferred Package now adds a power moonroof. The Preferred Package consists of heated front seats, gloss black front grille, door mirrors with memory positioning and eight-way power driver seats with power lumbar support and seat memory. As part of this package, the interior and leatherette seats are available in either black or greige.
      Elevating to the Mazda3 2.5S with Premium Package brings the highest qualities to the hatchback and sedan. New for 2021, this package is enhanced with navigation, Bose® 12-speaker premium audio with aluminum speaker grilles, SiriusXM® that includes a three-month trial subscription and a shark fin antenna. Also included in this package is Active Driving Display, Adaptive Front-lighting System and paddle shifters. Leather seats complement the quality of the interior. Along with available black interior, the white interior option is exclusive to the sedan with the red interior option reserved for the hatchback. For the exterior, this package is equipped with 18-inch black finish aluminum alloy wheels and LED signature illumination headlights and taillights. Limited to the Premium package hatchback FWD, Mazda will continue to offer its Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual transmission.

For car reviews, I like The Smoking Tire, Savage Geese and Seen Through Glass.. Others I enjoy are Drive Tribe (related to the Grand Tour) and Vinwiki Car Stories (lots of interesting stories).
