Rivian, an American technology and automaker company, announced the all-new R2, a mid-size electric SUV. The company has stated that deliveries of the R2 Performance with Launch Package SUV will start in Spring 2026. Premium configurations or mid-tier will begin deliveries in late 2026 and the standard base configuration will start deliveries in 2027.

What is a R2 Performance with Launch Package SUV? According to RJ Scaringe, Founder and CEO of Rivian: “R2 embodies so many of our learnings that we have accumulated—the passion and attention to detail from our team is visible everywhere.”

The R2 offers the unmistakably Rivian DNA SUV to a broader audience without a compromise in capabilities. All prices do not include taxes and fees at time of purchase. Estimated ranges will vary depending on selected options / trim, preliminary estimates are based on the EPA test cycle and not official values as of this writing.

R2 Performance (Available Spring 2026)

Debuting with Launch Package starting at $57,990 (available for limited time), the Performance trim is the most capable R2 on- and off-road. This dual-motor AWD variant delivers a staggering 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, capable of launching R2 from 0-60 mph in as quick as 3.6 seconds and offering an EPA-estimated range of up to 330 miles. At this price point, the R2 Performance competes directly with the 2026 Hyundai IONIQ 9 priced from $58,955.

Rivian has a selection of new colors that go with the existing Midnight, Glacier White, Forest Green, Borealis and Launch Green (available for a limited time with Launch Package).

• Catalina Cove: Exclusive to R2, like the waters that surround Catalina Island, this metallic paint shifts from deep Pacific blues to translucent greens in the light.
• Esker Silver: Inspired by the winding ridges of gravel and sand that glaciers leave behind, fine metallic flakes bring depth to this shimmering silver.

R2 Performance and Premium trims feature two signature interiors defined by a tactile blend of Birch wood accents and organic textures.

2,000 lbs lighter than the R1 and sitting on a shorter wheelbase (115.6 in), R2 is incredibly responsive and maneuverable in urban environments. The venture will be equally owned and controlled by both companies to lower the cost per vehicle of both companies' vehicles. Rivian will contribute its electrical propulsion and battery expertise and license its software to the joint venture. The move gives Volkswagen access to Rivian's current EV propulsion designs to accelerate the rollout of VW Group vehicles.

Rivian points out that this agreement does not cover areas such as chassis or non-propulsion-related component design. This means that the VW group's upcoming Scout brand will not feature badge-engineered Rivians.

The investment will provide Rivian with some much-needed cash as it builds a new production facility in Georgia and gears up for the production of the Rivian R2 and Rivian R3.

Yesterday, Rivian announced that drivers of Rivian R1T and R1S vehicles are now able to charge at most Tesla Supercharger locations.  Like Ford EV drivers, Rivian owners will receive a free NACS to CCS adapter. The Supercharger network has been integrated into Rivian's navigation and charging app, enabling "plug-and-charge" simplicity without needing to pull up an app.  Billing for charge sessions at Tesla supercharger stations is handled automatically through the Rivian network.

Starting in 2025 with the Rivian R1S and R1T, Rivian vehicles will adopt the NACS charge port, enabling drivers of those vehicles native access to the Supercharger network and other NACS chargers without an adapter. The Rivian R2 and Rivian R3 will be equipped with the NACS port from the start of production.

Rivian announced in June, 2023 that they would adopt the NACS adapter and enable Tesla Supercharging access. They are the second automaker to do so, following Ford enabling Supercharger access earlier this month.

Rivian has also been busy building its own Rivian Adventure Network, a series of charging stations focused on more remote locations where Rivian drivers might access like national parks.  Currently, the Rivian Adventure Network is limited to Rivian drivers, but later this year Rivian will be opening access to all electric vehicles.

The Rivian NACS to CCS adapters begin shipping in April. In the meantime, Rivian drivers might borrow a Ford NACS to CCS adapter from a friend.

In a surprise move at the 2026 Rivian R2 reveal today, Rivian also unveiled another smaller crossover, the Rivian R3 and R3X. 

Based on the same platform as the Rivian R2, the smaller R3 will be even less expensive than the $45,000 R2, but we don't have an exact price yet. Like the R2, it will have two battery sizes and be capable of ranges over 300 miles with acceleration to 60 under three seconds.  The R3 will be available in single-, dual-, and tri-motor configurations.

The R3 has a 5-inch shorter wheelbase than the R2 and strays away from the boxy SUV character of other Rivians, reminding this author more of a lifted 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit in the side profile.  Despite its smaller size, the R3 keeps many of the features of the R2, including a large frunk, front and rear seats that fold flat, and a rear glass that opens independently of the hatch to allow carrying larger items.

Aiming for a more performance-oriented image, Rivian also introduced the R3X, a tri-motor variant that features wider tires and more ground clearance.

The Rivian R3 will be built at Rivian's new factory in Georgia, which is not yet online. We will have to wait until closer to launch to find out when you can buy one or how much it will cost.

Expanding its offerings today, Rivian unveiled the Rivian R2, expected to go on sale in early 2026. This new model rides on a new platform and is smaller than its big brother, the Rivian R1, by nearly 15 inches in length and 12 inches in height. The first question and second questions on people's minds when revealing a new electric vehicle are cost and range. In this, the Rivian R2 will come to market with an expected $45,000 base price and an EV range of 300 - 320 miles, depending on the configuration. Rivian is expected to enable Tesla Supercharger access in the next few weeks, more than doubling the number of charging plugs available to Rivian drivers, and the R2 will ship with the Tesla-designed NACS port natively.

Smaller Platform, Three Motor Options

While this is a new platform, Rivian was careful to keep the details familial. The R2 will be built, at least initially, at Rivian's Normal, Illinois plant to enable a faster ramp-up for 2026, though production could move to Rivian's new plant in Georgia once that comes online. Unlike the R1, which is available in dual- or quad-motor configurations, the R2 will be available as a single-motor rear-wheel drive, a dual-motor all-wheel drive, and a tri-motor all-wheel drive. In top spec, the R2 is capable of sprinting to 60 in under 3 seconds. Every version of the R2 will have at least 300 miles of range. Exact charging speeds haven't been released, but Rivian claims charging from 10-percent to 80-percent will take less than 30 minutes on a DC-Fast Charger. Clever Features the R1 Didn't Have

The R2 gets some neat features not on the Rivian R1. One of the main bits of feedback Rivian received about the R1 was over the lack of a glovebox, and Rivian overcompensated in the R2, with not one, but two gloveboxes. The rear window can lower into the hatch like in a Toyota 4-Runner and the rear C-panel windows pop out for additional ventilation. All four seats, yes, including the driver's seat, fold flat to allow for an in-vehicle camping experience.

Keeping with their adventure theme, the R2 has some off-road credible specs with 9.8 inches of ground clearance, 32-inch tires, a 25-degree approach angle, and 27-degrees of departure angle.

12,000 Tesla Supercharger stations and growing in North America, the Supercharger stations by Tesla are the largest EV charging stations around North America as well as the world when looking at Europe and Asian.

Rivian emailed out today that all Rivian owners will gain access to the Tesla Supercharger station network. Starting in Spring 2024, Rivian will offer an NACS to CCS adapter for purchase for existing R1t and R1S customers who want to take advantage of the Tesla Supercharger network.

In 2025, Rivian will incorporate NACS charge ports as standard on R1T and R1S EVs along with the adapter for allowing use to older CCS chargers.

No matter where you are, Rivian says that this will grow the access to over 25,000 DC fast chargers across North America enlarging the Rivian Adventure Network.

Rivian upon release of the NACS to CCS adapter in Spring 2024 will then also via OTA update the Rivian Infotainment system to add the available NACS sites and update the phone app to include the Tesla Network.

Rivian has stated that this collaboration does not affect their plans to expand the Rivian Adventure network to over 3,500 fast chargers at more than 600 sites including trail heads for off-roading.

Amazon's Climate Pledge to have a sustainable delivery fleet reaching net-zero carbon across their global operations is what these Rivian state-of-the-art EDV delivery vans are all about.

CEO RJ of Rivian along with the CEO of Amazon have now officially rolled out the EDV to immediately start being used for delivery in Baltimore, Chicago, Dalla, Kansas City, Nashville, Phoenix, San Diego, Seattle and St. Louis. This will grow to over 100 cities by the end of 2022 and to over 100,000 by the end of 2030.

These vehicles were designed from the ground-up, key focus on safety, sustainability, comfort and improved workflow.

The EDV started with an announced partnership in 2019 and with both Rivian and Amazon signing The Climate Pledge a commitment to reach net-zero carbon across all operations by 2040. As part of this pledge, Rivian and Amazon are working to decarbonize the last mile logistics as well as accelerate innovation that can help others reach net-zero carbon. This commitment will have Amazon with over 100,000 electric delivery vehicles on the U.S. roads alone by 2030 and save millions of metric tons of carbon a year.

Amazon has been testing deliveries with Rivian Preproduction EDVs since 2021, delivering over 430,000 packages and accumulating over 90,000 miles. This significant testing has allowed Rivian to continuously improve the vehicles performance, safety and durability in verious climates and geographies we well as its state-of-the-art features to ensure driver satisfaction and overall functionality. Rivian has completed certifications with the NHTSA, CARB and the U.S. EPA.

The custom vehicles are made at Rivian’s factory in Illinois, and include innovative technology and features such as:

• A safety-first design focused on superior 360-degree visibility, and vehicle features that protect drivers and pedestrians.
• A suite of innovative safety features including sensor detection, highway, and traffic assist technology, a large windshield to enhance driver visibility, automatic emergency breaking, adaptive cruise control, and collision warnings.

Amazon delivery stations across the country has one of the largest installed charging infrastructures to support their growing fleet of EDVs to ensure a carbon-zero last mile delivery fleet. Amazon has also partnered with the nonprofit CERES, and several other fleet operators to launch the Corporate Electric Vehicle Alliance, bringing together companies to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. Dec 16th, 2021, Rivian press release went out that the great state of Georgia had won for Rivian's second assembly plant campus. This carbon-conscious campus is to be built east of Atlanta, in Morgan and Walton counties. This is a $5-billion site development and manufacturing investment.

Rivian stated this new 2,000-acre campus would have the following:

• Employ more than 7,500 workers
• Produce up to 400,000 auto's a year
• Renewable energy production

Construction of the plant begins summer of 2022 with production slated for some time in 2024.

Clearly a very large investment by Rivian into the state of Georgia. With that we also now have one of the best views into the 2022 production at the Normal, Illinois production campus.

Not since Facebook IPO has wallstreet seen such a big IPO. With today November 10th, 2021 being Rivian's or RIVN IPO which kicked off at $78 per share and has since surged to $106 per share, a 36% surge on their initial day has wall street seen such a crazy IPO.

Rivian at the current trading price has pushed past $90 billion in book value. Course this did not stop the crazy stock pop that is normal as within minutes RIVN stock rose to $116 per share or more than a 50% jump from their starting IPO price before gain pairing happened and now is moving back and forth around the $106 per share range. This has RIVN start at a company valuation of $66.5 billion and is currently worth just a bit over $90 billion now.

The initial upsized IPO was 153,000,000 shares of Rivian Class A common stock. Since then on Tuesday November 9th 2021, Rivian gave a 30 day option of an additional 22,950,000 Class A Common stock shares to sell is demand warrants by the underwriters. As it would seem, one would expect these shares to sell as well.

The gross proceeds from this offering after discounts, commissions and expenses is to deposit into Rivian's bank account at least $11.9 Billion

Rivian has stated that they have firm orders for 55,400 of their R1T and R1S auto's. They have a commitment for 100,000 Amazon Prime delivery vans of which Rivian says they will have 10,000 on the road by 2022 with the full 100,000 built and delivered by 2030 pending any additional conversions of options for more vans from Amazon to Rivian.

Amazon (AMZN) with their $1 billion investment or 20% stake and Ford (F)  with their $500 million investment or 12% stake are both backing Rivian and Ford has plans to have Rivian build select EV's for them though nothing has been committed to yet.

Rivian as per their own CEO RJ and based on patent documents is planning a complete EV family of products for both retail and commercial application.

It would seem that Tesla is no longer the crazy wild EV auto company stock ride, we now have Rivian.

Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe drove off the first R1T production truck in Rivian Blue at the Normal Production plant.

The Rivian truck received an EPA rating of 314 miles on the default battery pack that is shipping now. a larger battery pack will become available in January 2022 as well as a smaller battery pack at a future time.

Rivian R1T spec:

• EPA 314 mile range on standard battery pack
• Battery type 2170 cylindrical cell supplied by Samsung SDI
• 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds
• Quad motor, AWD
• On-board charger is 11.5 kW, AC level 2, 25 miles per hour of charge.
• DC Fast charging 140 miles in 20 minutes
• Wading depth of 3 plus feet
• Towing capacity of 11,000 pounds

Rivian says it is interested in pursuing a subscription model as one of the ways you can get into a Rivian truck or SUV.  Subscription programs include all maintenance and insurance requirements in a single payment.  Rivian sees potential for customers who want to use one vehicle for daily commuting and another vehicle for weekend jaunts. Traditionally, the subscription model has been geared towards the affluent with brands such as Cadillac, Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, and Lincoln. The only mid-price brand to try subscriptions in the U.S. has been Ford.

Aside from the subscription option, customers will also be able to purchase directly from the company. Like Tesla, Rivian is eschewing the traditional dealership model and doing direct sales only. How Rivian will run the same gauntlet that Tesla did with state dealership associations is something that is still a mystery. 

Rivian has received large investments from outside firms such as Amazon, Ford, Cox Automotive, and others. Amazon recently announced that they placed an order for 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian. 

Back in February, Amazon helped Rivian by investing $700 million into the company. Now Amazon is helping further with one first big order.  Amazon is ordering 100,000 vans to be delivered by 2024. The first deliveries should start in 2021 and prototypes will likely be seen next year.  At that rate of production, Rivian would immediately start outselling the Nissan NV and NV200 combined.  The van is exclusive to the Amazon partnership and Rivian says it will not delay any of the R1T or R1S deliveries as it is being built on a separate assembly line at the Normal IL. facility. 

Rivian used a skateboard chassis for their R1T and R1S, so building a van body (R1V?) over top of the skateboard shouldn't be too hard of a task. The R1T has a claimed range of up to 400 miles on a single charge and being capable of getting to an 80 percent charge inside of an hour. 

Amazon's use for the vans is clear. They have committed to reaching the goals of the United Nations Paris Agreement 10 years early with 80% of their energy use being renewable by 2024 and 100% by 2030. 

Ford announced today that it would be investing $500 million in Electric Vehicle startup Rivian.  The move will gain Ford access to Rivian's flexible skateboard platform.  Ford will co-develop the vehicle with Rivian and will join the already planned Ford F-150 EV and a Mustang inspired crossover EV.  Ford will provide Rivian with industrial expertise and resources.

Rivian will remain an independent company and the investment is subject to regulatory approvals.

Rivian has shown concept versions of the Rivian R1T, an electric pickup and Rivian R1S SUV at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It plans to put these vehicle into production at its plant in Normal Illinois.

Ford's investment comes just two months after Rivian landed $700m in investment commitments from Amazon and others.  The talks between Rivian and General Motors have apparently collapsed. 

According to RivianForums.com, Electric vehicle startup Rivian has filed for a patent on an innovative new reconfigurable bed system for the Rivian R1T pickup truck.  The system is comprised of different moduals that can be swapped out depending on what use the owner has in mind.  Users would be able to choose from a flatbed, a cargo bed, a bed with side rails, and a couple of bed cap options.    The bed system shows off one of the advantages of the skateboard style platform that underpins the R1T and Rivian R1S. 

The truck will be able to detect which module is installed and adjust things like suspension dampening, ride height, and braking to best match the new configuration. 

This is the second patent filing for Rivian that involves modularity. The first was a removable truck bed auxiliary battery to extend the driving range of the vehicle.

The Rivian R1T and Rivian R1S were both shown at the LA Auto Show in November, both claiming a top of the line range of 400 miles. The folks over at Rivian Forums have uncovered a patent filing for an extended battery for the Rivian R1T.

The drawing shows a bed mounted battery with connections for coolant and electrical flow. In addition to providing more energy, the R1T would detect when the auxiliary battery was installed and adjust braking, suspension, and steering to compensate for the extra weight.

Rivian uses a skateboard style architecture which places the entire powertrain and battery system in a platform below the vehicle and then builds the body on top of it. This allows Rivian to have nearly a free hand in designing the body and interior above the powertrain. 

Rivian will offer 3 standard battery packs for the R1T:

• 105-kWh: 402 horsepower, and 413 lb-ft of torque, range of 230+ miles
• 135-kWh: 754 horsepower, and 826 lb-ft of torque, range of 300+ miles
• 180-kWh: 700 horsepower, and 826 lb-ft of torque, range of 400+ miles

Rivian claims the R1T will get 80 percent charge in just 15 minutes when using a DC fast charger and a full charge in eight hours using a Level 2 charger.

Rivian says the R1T will begin at $61,500 after Federal Tax credit - likely putting the base at just under $70,000. Production is expected to begin in late 2020 at a plant in Normal, Illinois. The company recently landed $700M in investment commitments, lead by a significant investment by Amazon.

Detroit Auto Maker Rivian landed $700M in investment commitments lead by Amazon.  Rumors were swirling earlier this week that Amazon and GM were in talks to provide investment that valued the company between $1B and $2B.  GM is not part of this round of investing, but that does not mean GM is out of it just yet.

Rivian plans to introduce the R1T pickup (shown above) in 2020 with the R1S SUV following later.   Four more vehicles are planned starting in 2025.  The vehicles are set to be produced at Rivian's plant in Normal, Ill., a former Mitsubishi facility.

Amazon's interest in Rivian includes using Rivian's technology to support its own logistics and delivery services.  GM's interest comes from CEO Mary Barra's commitment to a Zero emissions future.  GM is studying the feasibility of an Electrified GMC Sierra  while crosstown rival Ford has plans for an EV F-150.
