2026 Subaru Outback Transitions from Wagon to SUV

Wagon no longer, the Subaru Outback has transitioned to an SUV.

2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness on a rocky roadFor the first time since... forever, Subaru is now without a wagon.  The Outback has been one of Subaru's legendary vehicles since it became a trim line on the Subaru Legacy Wagon in 1994 and a model in its own right in 1999. Sales of wagons have dwindled in recent years, and with the demise of the Subaru Legacy sedan last year, there was no longer a platform for Subaru to base a wagon on. However, the Outback name has tremendous brand cache, and Subaru is looking to build on that with a new Subaru Outback SUV.  Wagon lovers, all three of them, will lament, but the march of progress never stops.

For 2026,  the Outback Wilderness trim focuses on performance both on and off road. Powered by a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer producing 260 horsepower and a stout 277 lb-ft of torque, the Outback Wilderness promises to maintain that boxer grunt that Subaru enthusiasts crave. Power is routed 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness Interior - Dashthrough a CVT with 8-speed manual mode to Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel drive system with X-Mode. The X-MODE Dual Mode System with Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud modes adds confidence for Outback Wilderness drivers.  Compared with the standard Outback, the all-wheel drive system is revised to allow the center differential to lock faster, thereby reducing wheelspin in low-traction situations.

The 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness also offers enhanced approach, departure, and breakover angles, compared to the rest of the 2026 Outback lineup. The approach angle has been extended to 20 degrees compared to 18 degrees; ramp breakover moves up to 21.2 degrees compared to 19.4 degrees; and the departure angle increases to 22.5 degrees compared to 21.4 degrees.

    Out of the Wilderness

2026 Subaru Outback Side ViewThose opting for a more city-appropriate Outback will find a welcome home in the non-Wilderness model. Available in Premium, Limited, Touring, Limited XT, Touring XT, and Wilderness trim levels when it goes on sale in late 2025, non-Wilderness trims come standard with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine producing 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque and feeding the standard Symmetrical All-Wheel drive through Subaru's standard CVT.  Steering on all Outback models uses components from Subaru's WRX, providing a more direct feel and feedback.

The 2026 Subaru Outback also comes standard with a 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster with selectable views, including a new Calm Mode to minimize driver distraction for a more relaxing journey. A traditional, Normal Mode view displays gauges and information, while a map-focused mode offers destination assistance via the available onboard, cloud-based navigation system. When paired with a smartphone, a separate view projects turn-by-turn navigation from apps such as Apple Maps, and an EyeSight-focused Mode displays a large, easy-to-read view of the road ahead, including surrounding vehicles.

The all-new 2026 Subaru Outback brings along more space for passengers and cargo than any previous Outback, ensuring driver and passengers arrive prepared for their next adventure. In addition to innovative cargo solutions, the new Outback offers more space, more comfort, and smarter designs for its passengers.

2026 Subaru Outback Front SeatsThanks to a 2-inch taller roofline and an all-new design, the Outback offers 34.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity, larger by 2 cubic feet than its predecessor. The cargo area is also 2 inches taller, while the load floor width spans 43.3 inches, wider than its competitors. Flexible and durable interior utility hooks offer tie down points for gear and can be used in the liftgate to hold items such as lanterns or wet gear, up to 6 pounds.

Front and rear passengers get more headroom in the new Outback, and new low-fatigue seats mounted directly onto the chassis improve long-distance comfort and reduce head movement on longer drives. Lateral sway in the new Outback has been reduced by 42% compared to its predecessor, and an adjustable driver’s seat cushion helps to support legs for longer journeys.

Inside the cabin, the new Subaru Outback is quieter and more refined thanks to sound-absorbing materials used in the roof and headliner. Wind noise has been reduced by 10% thanks to aerodynamic elements in the body sides and roof rails.

More information, detailed specifications, and pricing information will be available closer to launch in late 2025.

I think it is too tall, and I don't like the body color piece of plastic they just glued to the rear window.  They should have left that out so it looks more like an Outback.  And I am also tired of split headlights, I don't see the point of those, it adds cost and it doesn't look good.

    • Used this site to have it generate me an exterior and interior version of a KIA EV9 with Genesis look. Deep Image https://deepimg.ai/ai-image-generator/ Have to say I really like this look! @Drew Dowdell I could so enjoy this SUV. Am excited for the GV90 to come out next year if we still get it here in the U.S.
    • 1 minute 30 in and I was swearing at the guy...and I cut it short. Didnt wanna listen to his stupidity any longer than that.  1. Who the phoque does mechanics work on MODERN cars at home in 2025? 2. I get the "right to repair" outrage for Zeke's Auto Shop somewhere in  hickville, alabama or bumpkin pumpkin south carolina... but there is a reason why most people do not attempt to work on modern cars in 2025.    3. its to avoid killing one's self and others as cars today are actually sophisticated.  Do they have to be that sophisticated?  Well that is what this moron youtuber is trying to sell his idea on.   4. But at around the 1 minute mark is where his argument all went south (pun intended as it seems the folk down south in them there united states are really phoquing dumb individuals).  He goes on to say that one could fix the brakes on a car by themselves.  Its not that hard he says. But even if putting the brakes on backwards he says, you would hear a noise that something is wrong and you would just change the brakes up again to put them right.  Like he does not see the problem with what he just said?  ALL KINDS of error in thinking in that... Zeke in his business auto shop down the street should be able to hire auto mechanics students straight from an auto mechanics school to fix modern GM cars, Ford cars, KIAs, Toyotas  and all the other OEMs out there WITHOUT having to buy special proprietary equipment and computers to unlock the proprietary car's computer to be able to read the software language to be able to repair...   I will agree with that.  But Bobby Joe with his two good teeth and his blood cousin/brother-n-law  Waylon who married his sister Country Sunshine shouldnt be able to... 6. There is a reason to why computers are locked though.  Everything phoquing Bluetooth in cars today and outside hackers might and will be able to take control of the cars.  Not that would stop any hacker, but it is more difficult to do so. 7. AND....cars today ARE sophisticated.   You cant just bang on a car part today with a hammer to get it to fit or to hillybilly a solution for it.   Yeah...put a brake part on backwards he says...    Fix it later and better he says when you hear weird noise he says....  Phoque me!!!     If you are serious in doing your own car work...make the phoque sure you aint putting on nothing backwards...  I thought changing brakes are easy.  THAT is what he says too.  But that is the thing, if  putting on brakes is such an easy and trivial thing , why would you put it on backwards, but if you do put it on backwards, what else do you phoque up on the car today in 2025?   And that is with brakes...   Cars today are not just mechanical....   Does this youtuber or Zeke or Bobby Joe,  Waylon and Country Sunshine know electronics and computers?  Are they willing to learn?  They probably all flunked out and dropped out of school, so no...they have no will to learn anything new...  Any other Joe Blow...who some knowledge and its a difficult thing...   Why would you attempt to fix it yourself voiding a warranty or phoquing up another part and being in a worse position than before?   The folk that are able to work on today's cars OUTSIDE of a dealership KNOW what to do. They often HOTROD their cars and TUNE their engines different from the factory settings.  These guys ALREADY  know what to do.  Joe from accounting in your office has not the time, nor the patience to do such things.   Billy Bob in appalachia might be able to do it because Billy Bob is a car guy, but Bobby Joe with his 2 good teeth, most probably not.  Fake phoquing outrage...
