Water Pump and timing belt

Featured Replies

For my pontiac 1994 sunbird 2.0 sohc, my water pump started dumping out antifreeze today. I know parts aren't expensive but how much should I expect a shop to replace it for. I figure do the timing belt at the same time as well since they have to take it off anyway right? I hope its not over $500.00 because thats all I'm willing to spend and I don't feel like trying to fix it myself since I don't have much time.

Parts and labor for the timing belt/water pump on my Solara was about $550 and took my shop about 8 hours. I'd assume it would be less on a Sunbird since I dont think their engine bays are as cramped as the Solaras.

Let see, at 65.00 shop labor (pretty standard for a lot of shops). R&R=Remove and Replace.

R&R Water pump: 4.2 hours, 168.00

R&R Timing Belt: 3.5 hours, 140.00

Cost of Timing Belt: 41.25

Cost of Water Pump: 93.25 (new) 36.59 (reman)

All in all, about an 8 hour job for a shop, and you'd be looking at roughly $442.50 if you went with the new pump.

Just out of curiosity doesn't some of the labor overlap? In the past I have negiotated a price based on that.

$425-450 sounds about right - timing belt/water pump on my wife's Prizm was $435 a couple of months ago.
